TruGreen Review: Is It Really Worth It?

By HighYa Research Team
Updated on: May 28, 2019

TruGreen is a lawn care company whose website provides an extensive list of full-care and standalone services that can help your yard look green and healthy.

The company’s differentiating factor is that they claim to provide top-notch yard experts who combine science and experience to make your lawn as green as possible and, if you aren’t satisfied with their work, you can have them repeat the treatment or you can cancel your remaining treatments and get your money back.

In addition to these characteristics, the company has been around for more than 40 years and is a well-known, national brand.

In this review, we’ll help you understand how TruGreen’s services work, what they cost and what consumers are saying about their experiences with TruGreen.

We’ll finish up with a section addressing the company’s general pros and cons, and we’ll provide a quick tip for narrowing down your lawn care search.

How TruGreen Works

TruGreen claims to be “America’s #1 lawn care company.”

They provide regularly scheduled maintenance visits that take the complexity out of lawn care while improving its health and overall beauty.

First, TruGreen will send a local specialist to your home, who they claim is trained by agronomic experts through their TruExpert Certification Program.

During this visit, the specialist will conduct a Healthy Lawn Analysis® of your yard, which allows them to formulate a year-round plan specifically tailored to meet your needs based on climate, region, and season. From there, you’ll then need to choose your lawn care plan, which includes the following packages:

TruSignature Lawn Care Plan

Visits every four to six weeks, eight yearly treatments plus aeration and tree and shrub plan.

  • Lawn aeration
  • Lawn analysis
  • Soil treatment
  • Fertilization
  • Weed control
  • Treatments to make lawn greener
  • Tree and shrub care (insect control)

This package is the most complete out of the four that you see here, as it includes the most services and also is the only one that includes tree and shrub care. We see this package being a good fit for someone who wants a comprehensive coverage plan that will cover their lawn, shrubs, and trees.

TruComplete Lawn Care Plan

Visits every four to six weeks, eight yearly treatments.

  • Lawn aeration
  • Lawn analysis
  • Soil treatment
  • Fertilization
  • Weed control
  • Treatments to make lawn greener

This package includes everything the TruSignature does minus the tree and shrub care. Consequently, we think this package could be a good fit for someone whose main focus is their lawn and either doesn’t have shrubs and trees or is comfortable caring for them on their own.

TruHealth Lawn Care Plan

Visits every four to six weeks, eight yearly treatments.

  • Lawn analysis
  • Soil treatment
  • Fertilization
  • Weed control
  • Treatments to make lawn greener

The main difference here is that you lose the aeriation service included in the TrueComplete package. Aeriation punches small holes in your soil so that the soil can absorb more nutrients.

“Aeration can be an extremely vital element to a healthy lawn because it allows air and water to penetrate built-up grass or lawn thatch,” Briggs and Stratton notes.

If you feel like your lawn is getting the nutrients it needs and you don’t believe you need special attention paid to your trees and shrubs, this package is a better fit.

TruMaintenace Lawn Care Plan

Visits every four to six weeks, seven yearly treatments.

  • Lawn analysis
  • Fertilization
  • Weed control
  • Treatments to make lawn greener

This is TruGreen’s most basic package and is best suited if you want to keep your weeds at bay and, at the same time, want your grass fertilized.

Other Services

TruGreen also offers several stand-alone specialty services.

Their tree & shrub care plans that work very similar to the lawn plans. Your specialist will focus on things such as improving soil moisture, preventing fungus growth and insect infestation, root zone fertilization, and even scientifically formulated targeted trunk injection.

They feature soil amendment services (adjustment of your soil’s micronutrients like lime and sulfur) as well as TruShield Tick and Flea Control, a treatment plan that can reduce ticks, fleas, chiggers, earwigs, spiders and, in some locations, ants.

Other services include lawn plugging, fire ant control, and mosquito control.

TruGreen Pricing and Refund Policy

TruGreen claims that their plans often cost less than what it would for you to perform the same level on maintenance on your own, and their website provides the ability to estimate costs based on your yard’s size, your specific concerns (e.g. weeds, thinning grass, insect activity, etc.), and more.

With this in mind, we received the following quotes for a yard with an area of less than 5,000 square feet in Jacksonville, FL (we didn’t receive a TrueSignature quote):

  • TruComplete – $754.50 per year
  • TruHealth – $578.50 per year
  • TruMaintenance – $282.00 per year
  • Tree & Shrub Care – $632.00 per year
  • Mosquito Defense — $483.25
  • TruShield Tick and Flea Control: $501.90
  • Aeration — $166.47
  • Fire Ant Service — $145.03
  • Lawn Plugging — $150.00

Keep in mind that these quotes are for what TruGreen considers a “small” yard of less than 5,000 square feet. If your yard is above 5,000 square feet, it’s considered a “medium” yard and the prices will go up. For example, the price difference between a small and medium yard getting TrueComplete is around $250.

If you pay for your plan up front, TruGreen provides around a 7-percent discount.

Also, these plans include a discount on the first treatment. As we read through the fine print, we found that this discount only applies in certain situations.

For example, the first-treatment discount for TruGreen’s tree and shrub plan only applies to new residential customers and they limit it to up to five trees, none of which can be taller than 25 feet.

Also, their Mosquito Defense first-treatment discount is only available for homes on lots of one acre or less and is limited to certain areas of the country.

TruGreen claims that they provide guaranteed results and that they will visit as often as necessary in between scheduled visits in order to give you the best results. However, this guarantee only applies to “full” plan customers.

We called TruGreen’s customer service phone number—(855)216-1134—to get more details. The phone rep told us that the plans they offer are priced out on a per-treatment basis. This means that, if at any point in your plan you’re unhappy with the results, you can get a refund for any remaining treatments you’ve paid for.

DIY Lawn Care vs. Hiring a Professional Service

The previous section showed us that hiring TruGreen can cost you more than $700 per year if you want their most extensive lawn care package.

For some homeowners or renters, that may be too much money and you might be inclined to DIY your lawn care beyond just cutting your grass.

The goal, says grass-seed specialists Pennington, is to create a thick, green lawn each year. How you do that is up to you.

Among the benefits of hiring a company, they say, is that you save time, you can hire them to come on a consistent schedule and they have professional-level equipment and, in most cases, years of expertise.

However, Pennington points out, the obvious drawback is money. Also, some professionals aren’t going to provide your lawn with treatment specific to your soil and grass; they may treat it the same way they treat everyone else’s lawns.

The upside to doing your lawn yourself is that you save money and you can do the work on your schedule; you aren’t stuck with the availability the lawn service has.

The startup costs, though, are high for DIY lawn care, as you’ll need to buy a spreader, fertilizer, grass seed, weed killer and insect repellants or insect killers.

If you choose to forego hiring a service so you can save money and become an expert yourself, Pennington points out that you have helpful resources within your county that can augment your expertise.

“Whether you decide on a do-it-for-me service or DIY like a pro, expert advice and premium grass seed and lawn products will help. Your local county extension agent is an excellent source of information on lawn care for your region,” their site notes.

Extension offices are typically local government agricultural offices whose websites and employees provide a wealth of information about your area’s agriculture, growing tips and more.

Carlee Linden, a pest control and lawn care expert at Best Company, said TruGreen could be an option for those who want to avoid wasting time and money on their yard.

“A common problem (for homeowners) is overwatering and overfertilizing. After the damage is done and the homeowner's lawn is dead, they spend months trying new (often expensive) products to restore it — only to make the same mistakes a few months later,” she said.

TruGreen’s trained professionals will most likely not make these mistakes. The company isn’t just good for mistake-prone homeowners, though. Linden said the company is a great choice if you have a big lawn you can keep up with.

“In my opinion, TruGreen is worth it if you have a large yard, don’t have a lot of time to spend taking care of your lawn, and don’t want to spend your money trying out different products to see what works. A lot of the time, homeowners will spend just as much DIYing as they do hiring a professional,” she said.

What Do Consumers Have to Say About TruGreen?

At the time of publishing, TruGreen had 123 customer reviews on Highya.com and the majority of these reviews were negative. Out of those 123 reviews, 109 were one-star and four were five-star. Five percent of reviewers sad they would recommend the company to a friend.

The 10 most recent reviews featured eight one-star ratings, one two-star rating, and one five-star rating.

HighYa readers criticized the company for poor customer service, constant calls from salespeople and, in one case, a lawn specialist spending four minutes doing a lawn treatment that should’ve taken more than 20 minutes. Others noted that the company was not able to curb weed growth.

The one positive recent review was pretty definitive in its support of the company:

“I’ve had one application done by TruGreen about 3 weeks ago. The lawn looks better now than in the six years I had these other imbeciles doing it. I know it’s early in the business relationship, but please keep up the good work.”

The company had 225 reviews on Yelp. Of those 225 reviews, 207 were one-star and seven were five-star. The company’s 10 most recent reviews were poor, with nine being one-star and one being four-star.

Common complaints were that company salespeople called persistently and had poor tact, constant no shows for treatments and consistent poor communication or miscommunications.

TruGreen fared much better on TrustPilot, where the company had an average rating of 3.75 stars out of five from more than 1,700 reviewers. The 10 most recent reviews were all five stars and each review praised the company for its customer service as well as the results they saw in their lawn.

What’s the Bottom Line About TruGreen?

We see some clear strengths and weakness with this company. First, we believe that their website is easy to use when it comes to purchasing a lawn plan. They provide a good amount of detail for each plan and lay out how many times someone will come to your house to check up on your lawn and apply treatments.

Also, they’re a relatively reputable company in the sense that they’re a lawn care provider for the PGA. We like that their return policy allows you to cancel any remaining treatments you haven’t used in the event that you aren’t satisfied with their ability to make your lawn look beautiful.

We believe the downside to the company is that there are thousands of negative reviews about their services, with many people complaining about the company’s inability to make their yard work better, missed appointments as well as high-pressure phone tactics.

If you’re undecided about choosing TruGreen, we suggest using the time-honored technique of getting quotes from multiple yard companies through a vetted site like HomeAdvisor or Porch.com.

You’ll be able to read customer reviews of the company and get multiple quotes pretty quickly. Compare these prices and the services to what you get with TruGreen, then make a decision that best fits your budget and your yard’s needs.

    Huge improvement over last year

I had been treating my own lawn since re-sodding in 2011 using, for the most part, Scott's products. By late July of 2016, I noticed that the battle was lost. In spite of all my time money and efforts, the large lawn was overtaken by weeds. Fed up, I called TruGreen.

Don't get me wrong, there was sticker shock, but I knew I could call them back for additional treatments if necessary. I even told them to expect the call.

Now, one year later a friend referred to my yard as having a barefoot lawn. It is thick and beautiful. There are still some weeds but never enough for me to request an additional treatment. This spring my neighbor, having seen my results, also hired them.

Last fall I paid a pretty large price to have my yard aerated and seeded as well. I won't purchase that service again this year because it seemed too expensive for the results. The aeration was probably more beneficial than the seed, so I will handle that myself.

TruGreen in Minnesota seems to be well run and delivers on their promises. I may try their mosquito control and will report back at the end of summer.

    Great experience, great results

My own experience with TruGreen has been very good. I contacted them after seeing the huge difference they made in my next-door neighbor's lawn. I've been a customer for three years, previous to this I found it very difficult to get even a crappy lawn to grow, but now my lawn is full and healthy and fantastic. I get the basic service, they come about one time per month between late March - early November.

Don't expect instant miracles. The first year the improvement is noticeable, but if your lawn is like mine was, it took until the second year to get to where it is now.

    Works in my area

After reading the reviews, I felt compelled to leave my own experience. I've been having a beautiful lawn since they started servicing my vacation home. The first year showed slow results, but the technician told me to give it time. I was dealing with a rough lawn, and the results I wanted didn't happen right away. However, each year I noticed the grass came back thicker and greener. Now, seven years later, my lawn is so thick and green, it looks like a carpet! The neighbors are amazed, and we always get compliments on the lawn.

I'm in the Northeast area of the US, so we get all four seasons here. During the winter months, the grass goes dormant, and I was really concerned about the frost, ice, and snow would damage the roots. But when spring comes around, the grass sprouts back to life with energy and pushes out very green. But like I said, the first year didn't produce the results I was expecting, but by the third year, the results were very obvious. My only complaint, would be the price...yikes!

    Maybe I'm just lucky

This is the first year with TruGreen but so far I'm impressed. At the end of last summer, I started to have a real clover and crabgrass problem. After crunching the numbers and comparing what I was spending to do it myself (which obviously wasn't working), I decided to give these guys a try. What a difference! The pre-emergent they used must be magic because I don't have a single crabgrass or clover weed in my entire yard and that's only after a few treatments. I, like most, have high expectations when spending this kind of money and so far they have delivered. I see a lot of folks saying they've had bad customer service experiences but on the contrary, mine was the opposite. After one of the early season treatments, I noticed a select few broadleaf weeds starting to show, I waited about a week just to see if these would brown and die like the others had previously. Once I realized that they didn't, I called to voice my dissatisfaction and was told someone would be out within 3 business days to do another treatment free of charge. Sure enough, 2 days later a tech came out and resprayed the problem areas free of charge and I haven't had a weed since. I can't help but wonder if the local TruGreen office that services my yard is just better than most or I'm just lucky but I have nothing but good things to say up to this point and I would def recommend them to a friend, and in fact, I have.

My property was serviced on 11/8/19 by #1244 David Deithorn, License# 2347-21447. I was so impressed with this young man's explanation and care put forth during this treatment. He had an outstanding and kind way about him with excellent manners. You are lucky to have him on your staff.

My service must be a fluke

I started using TruGreen about four years ago. My yard was covered in little purple-flowered weeds. By the end of summer, my lawn looked awesome. They always call me in advance, and they usually knock on my front door to tell me they are there so that I don't let my dogs out into the yard for two to three hours after they leave. They are a little expensive, but so far, they have done a wonderful job. I just signed up for their mosquito control today because they are so heavy this year.

    Solid

I have a very different experience. For every treatment, my lawn tech (Bob) will come knock on the door and we will walk the lawn and he tells me his strategy and what he's applying. My service call between treatments was a week after I called, and was effective. My lawn had bare dirt spots in it, and the grass was thin when we moved in last fall. It's thick and full now.

I have no complaints on the work Bob does; he's doing an excellent job making my lawn one of the best on the block. I always get a phone call the day before he comes. I will agree that their customer service reps are not good and they try and push bush and tree treatments, etc. on you.

I contracted TruGreen to take care of my lawn over Spring and Summer as my schedule doesn't permit much time to do some of the necessary lawn maintenance to keep my lawn in shape.

I had read through many negative and frankly frightening reviews about their service. But I decided to give them a chance as several of my neighbors use TruGreen and their lawns look fantastic.

From their first visit to their last, I had no issues. They did the work promised and were efficient. My lawn looks fantastic. Deep green, no weeds, no crabgrass. There were no missed appointments, unauthorized treatments or charges. TruGreen delivered for me.

    TruGreen is rip-off company

I used this company for 2 years and my lawn looks worse than ever. I left messages for the "manager" and no response. I asked TruGreen to send the technician back to my home and I was ignored. TruGreen killed a tree in my front yard planted by the city. My backyard looks like a dirt road. I made a mistake and prepaid the full amount at the beginning of 2019 and asked for my money back in July 2019. However, the poorly educated "manager" is refusing to refund the money. DO NOT WASTE YOUR moey with this company.

We signed up in February. We were supposed to get our pre-emergent applied in March before weeds sprouted. Was schedule twice and rescheduled due to rain. Can't fault them because of Mother Nature but they didn't show up the second reschedule even when we got a call saying they would be out.

Now this is the end of March by now. I even called late in the day when no one had been there and was told the technician would be there. No show. That was a Friday.

I called Monday and they rescheduled. It rained that morning but was clear in the afternoon. No one showed. When I called, I was told it was because of the rain although when I was a speaking to the representative earlier she said what was going down did not matter if it rained!

I called the next scheduled day and was told they would be there. 2:30 came and there was no one yet. Spoke to a very nice gentleman and he said he would call and make sure someone made it out there. Good thing I called. The technician that came out late in the day said the man did actually call him and he came up from Maryland. I had not been on the schedule!

Needless to say, the weeds were out by this time in April. The next problem was when I called stating that we needed a repeat application as some weeds died but the majority turned yellow and then back to green.

Also a whole area had been missed as the weeds never went yellow at all. They said they would be out in three business days. I called that day and was told we were scheduled for Wednesday which is 4 business days. Guess what? It's supposed to rain so I suppose this will be rescheduled too.

Shop for a better service. This one is not all as it's cracked up to be.
