About TruGreen

By HighYa Staff

Now that spring has sprung and your lawn is beginning to grow again, you’ve probably seen ads popping up everyone for TruGreen. In fact, you’ve probably seen the large TruGreen trucks in your area on more than one occasion. This lawn, shrub, and tree maintenance company claims to take a scientifically tailored approach to lawn and landscape care, and to provide it with the attention it needs in order to remain healthy.

But does TruGreen really live up to its promises? Let’s get our hands dirty and find out.

Quick Facts About TruGreen

As the self-proclaimed leader of the professional U.S. lawn care industry, TruGreen claims to provide regularly scheduled maintenance visits that take the complexity out of lawn care, while improving its health and overall beauty.

First, TruGreen will send a local specialist to your home, which are claimed to be trained by agronomic experts through their TruExpert Certification Program. During this visit, the specialist will conduct a Healthy Lawn Analysis® of your yard, which allows them to formulate a plan specifically tailored to meet your needs based on climate, region, and season. From there, you’ll then need to choose your lawn care plan, which include:

  • TruComplete – TruGreen’s premiere, most comprehensive plan that claims to give your lawn “everything it needs to flourish.” Focused on increasing density, creating a deep green color, and preventing weed growth and insect infestation.
  • TruHealth – This mid-level plan claims to improve your lawn’s moisture, prevent weeds, and to provide essential nutrients.
  • TruMaintenance – A basic plan that provides nutrients and prevents weeds.

TruGreen also offers tree & shrub care plans that work very similar to the lawn plans. In other words, your specialist will focus on things such as improving soil moisture, preventing fungus growth and insect infestation, root zone fertilization, and even scientifically formulated targeted trunk injection.

According to the TruGreen website, your specialist will visit your home once every 7 weeks depending on your plan, which can be adjusted in order to provide “superior” results.

TruGreen Pricing & Refund Policy

TruGreen claims that their plans often cost less than what it would for you to perform the same level on maintenance on your own, and their website provides the ability to estimate costs based on your yard’s size, your specific concerns (e.g. weeds, thinning grass, insect activity, etc.), and more.

With this in mind, prices start at:

  • TruComplete – $528 per year
  • TruHealth – $357 per year
  • TruMaintenance – $282 per year
  • Tree & Shrub Plans – $399 per year

If you pay for your plan a year in advance, you can save 10% off the total price.

TruGreen claims that they provide guaranteed results, and that they will visit as often as necessary in between scheduled visits in order to give you the best results. However, this guarantee only applies to “full” plan customers.

To inquire more about TruGreen’s guarantee or to gain a better idea of cost, contact customer service at 866-369-9539.

What Do Other Consumers Have to Say About TruGreen?

TruGreen was founded in 1974 and is headquartered in Memphis, TN. The company is accredited with the Better Business Bureau, however, because each branch is a locally owned franchise, there are numerous entries on the BBB website, each of which have their own ratings and list of complaints.

While most Better Business Bureau ratings were in the B range, the online customer reviews we found during our research told a very different story. Overall, it appears that TruGreen has an extremely poor online customer reputation, with the most common complaints citing failure to see results (and in many instances, customers’ lawns actually got worse), numerous unwanted sales calls, that you can likely achieve the same results for less money, missed appointments, difficulty cancelling contracts (e.g. specialists would still show up repeatedly after cancellation), unauthorized additional services, and much, much more.

What’s the Bottom Line About TruGreen?

The phrase “time is money” has never been more relevant than today, when it seems like we have more things to do, and less time to do them in. As such, it can be tempting to hand over control of your lawn to a professional company like TruGreen, and to let them handle all the time-consuming dirty work. However, based on our research, you may want to think twice before signing up for a contract. Here’s why:

First, keep in mind that TruGreen only handles fertilization, aeration, weed and insect control, and pH maintenance. In other words, you’ll still be required to mow and water your own lawn, which are often the most time-consuming aspects of lawn maintenance. While the company claims to be able to discuss mowing techniques with you, they will not mow it themselves.

Next, despite their claimed commitment to excellence, there are thousands of negative online customer reviews about TruGreen. Admittedly, it would be one thing if each complaint cited something different, but nearly every one we read referenced one or more of the following:

  • Failure to see results (and in many instances, customers’ lawns actually got worse). And it’s often the case that when you try to call and let them know it’s not working, they’ll make it seem like it’s your fault (e.g. the grass was walked on too much, brown spots are due to pets, etc.).
  • Numerous unwanted sales calls and high-pressure sales tactics.
  • That you can likely achieve the same results for less money.
  • Multiple missed appointments.
  • Difficulty cancelling contracts (e.g. specialists would still show up repeatedly after cancellation) and then attempt to charge customers for the visit.
  • Unauthorized additional services (e.g. adding an extra treatment, etc.)

…and much, much more. In fact, these only scratch the surface of some of the most common online complaints related to TruGreen.

All in all, except in rare instances, it doesn’t appear that TruGreen consistently delivers on its promises. As such, we might recommend researching other local lawn maintenance companies to use instead.

    Huge improvement over last year

I had been treating my own lawn since re-sodding in 2011 using, for the most part, Scott's products. By late July of 2016, I noticed that the battle was lost. In spite of all my time money and efforts, the large lawn was overtaken by weeds. Fed up, I called TruGreen.

Don't get me wrong, there was sticker shock, but I knew I could call them back for additional treatments if necessary. I even told them to expect the call.

Now, one year later a friend referred to my yard as having a barefoot lawn. It is thick and beautiful. There are still some weeds but never enough for me to request an additional treatment. This spring my neighbor, having seen my results, also hired them.

Last fall I paid a pretty large price to have my yard aerated and seeded as well. I won't purchase that service again this year because it seemed too expensive for the results. The aeration was probably more beneficial than the seed, so I will handle that myself.

TruGreen in Minnesota seems to be well run and delivers on their promises. I may try their mosquito control and will report back at the end of summer.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

    Great experience, great results

My own experience with TruGreen has been very good. I contacted them after seeing the huge difference they made in my next-door neighbor's lawn. I've been a customer for three years, previous to this I found it very difficult to get even a crappy lawn to grow, but now my lawn is full and healthy and fantastic. I get the basic service, they come about one time per month between late March - early November.

Don't expect instant miracles. The first year the improvement is noticeable, but if your lawn is like mine was, it took until the second year to get to where it is now.

    Works in my area

    • East Stroudsburg, PA,

After reading the reviews, I felt compelled to leave my own experience. I've been having a beautiful lawn since they started servicing my vacation home. The first year showed slow results, but the technician told me to give it time. I was dealing with a rough lawn, and the results I wanted didn't happen right away. However, each year I noticed the grass came back thicker and greener. Now, seven years later, my lawn is so thick and green, it looks like a carpet! The neighbors are amazed, and we always get compliments on the lawn.

I'm in the Northeast area of the US, so we get all four seasons here. During the winter months, the grass goes dormant, and I was really concerned about the frost, ice, and snow would damage the roots. But when spring comes around, the grass sprouts back to life with energy and pushes out very green. But like I said, the first year didn't produce the results I was expecting, but by the third year, the results were very obvious. My only complaint, would be the price...yikes!

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

My service must be a fluke

I started using TruGreen about four years ago. My yard was covered in little purple-flowered weeds. By the end of summer, my lawn looked awesome. They always call me in advance, and they usually knock on my front door to tell me they are there so that I don't let my dogs out into the yard for two to three hours after they leave. They are a little expensive, but so far, they have done a wonderful job. I just signed up for their mosquito control today because they are so heavy this year.

    Solid

I have a very different experience. For every treatment, my lawn tech (Bob) will come knock on the door and we will walk the lawn and he tells me his strategy and what he's applying. My service call between treatments was a week after I called, and was effective. My lawn had bare dirt spots in it, and the grass was thin when we moved in last fall. It's thick and full now.

I have no complaints on the work Bob does; he's doing an excellent job making my lawn one of the best on the block. I always get a phone call the day before he comes. I will agree that their customer service reps are not good and they try and push bush and tree treatments, etc. on you.

    Positive experience

I contracted TruGreen to take care of my lawn over Spring and Summer as my schedule doesn't permit much time to do some of the necessary lawn maintenance to keep my lawn in shape.

I had read through many negative and frankly frightening reviews about their service. But I decided to give them a chance as several of my neighbors use TruGreen and their lawns look fantastic.

From their first visit to their last, I had no issues. They did the work promised and were efficient. My lawn looks fantastic. Deep green, no weeds, no crabgrass. There were no missed appointments, unauthorized treatments or charges. TruGreen delivered for me.

    Service is awful

We signed up in February. We were supposed to get our pre-emergent applied in March before weeds sprouted. Was schedule twice and rescheduled due to rain. Can't fault them because of Mother Nature but they didn't show up the second reschedule even when we got a call saying they would be out.

Now this is the end of March by now. I even called late in the day when no one had been there and was told the technician would be there. No show. That was a Friday.

I called Monday and they rescheduled. It rained that morning but was clear in the afternoon. No one showed. When I called, I was told it was because of the rain although when I was a speaking to the representative earlier she said what was going down did not matter if it rained!

I called the next scheduled day and was told they would be there. 2:30 came and there was no one yet. Spoke to a very nice gentleman and he said he would call and make sure someone made it out there. Good thing I called. The technician that came out late in the day said the man did actually call him and he came up from Maryland. I had not been on the schedule!

Needless to say, the weeds were out by this time in April. The next problem was when I called stating that we needed a repeat application as some weeds died but the majority turned yellow and then back to green.

Also a whole area had been missed as the weeds never went yellow at all. They said they would be out in three business days. I called that day and was told we were scheduled for Wednesday which is 4 business days. Guess what? It's supposed to rain so I suppose this will be rescheduled too.

Shop for a better service. This one is not all as it's cracked up to be.

    Wish I never used them

    • Georgia,

When I started the lawn care service, I was hoping to have all the weeds killed. By the end of a year and a half of service and $450 gone, my lawn was filled with bald patches and still covered in weeds. I complained, and they said if I pay $500 for another additional package ($950 yearly for eight treatments), they would fix them problems. Every time I tried to cancel, they offered free treatments, but I just wanted nothing to do with them anymore. The treatments were not effective.

After I canceled, they called me six times a week on average to get me back on their service. It's been two years since I canceled, and they still call me regularly.

Chem Lawn arrived today, 7/13/17. The tech exited the truck, walked the yard (1.5 acres), pulled the hose and sprayed for five minutes, posted the lawn and left. The whole thing is on camera (thanks Lorex)!

I called customer service to confirm the whole lawn is to be sprayed, and it is. They will send someone in 72 hours to respray the lawn. The manager will be notified, the customer service reps stated.

    TrueGreen service

I have approximately 1.08 acres of property that I requested TruGreen service(s) for pest control and lawn care.

I only had two months of service and decided to cancel. The reason is that it was very expensive (for me) at $260 for the pest control and $200 for the lawn care. I understand I have a little over an acre, but I properly maintain my lawn/trees/shrubs, all that is required is a little weed and feed and pest control (ants, spiders, and such). $460 every 4-6 weeks is a little too much for my taste. I have kids and wanted to make sure I had the proper tick controlled living in Maryland, along with a semi-weed free yard.

After three applications I still have weeds, and the ants are still prevalent as they were before. I must say my grass is greener, but we also had a lot of rain, so I am not certain I can contribute the service for that.

    Poor service and misleading advertisement

    • Loudoun County, VA,

I will be canceling my account with TruGreen because of misleading sales practices and incomplete service. I continued to have significant broadleaf weeds on my lawn in spite of their service. Additionally, I purchased the TruGreen Complete plan, which includes aeration, but I am being charged additionally and separately for aeration. If you are charging separately for aeration, then it is not part of the plan and should not be listed as if it were included. That is misleading and dishonest.
