About VaporSmarts

Vapor Smarts is a new brand of e-cigarette, the popular “vaping” contraptions that appeal to smokers not quite ready to go cold-turkey, or those who’d simply like to avoid the smell and ash, while still getting a nicotine fix.

According to the product’s website, Vapor Smarts tastes and smokes better than a real cigarette, without the smoke, smelly clothes, or yellowed teeth. In fact, the Vapor Smarts website suggests that their product can be used anywhere, including areas where traditional cigarettes are banned, such as restaurants, airplanes, at work, and more.

On top of this, Vapor Smarts is claimed to provide you with the nicotine you crave but without the serious health risks, while saving you money in the process (we’ll fully address these claims in a moment).

Sounds like a no-brainer, right? But before you hand over your money, there are some things you should keep in mind about Vapor Smarts.

A Word About E-Cigs

Right off the bat, you should know that the health risks of e-cigarettes are largely unexplored. The FDA hasn’t yet made any conclusive statements about what toxins might be inhaled from those supposedly innocuous e-juices. While there is a lot of social support for people who smoke e-cigarettes as a method of quitting traditional tobacco use, popular news sources are just as quick to caution would-be users about their risks

How much of the negative press is a result of tobacco companies attempting to prevent their customers from choosing a potentially healthier option, I can’t say. Potential users should be aware that the e-cigarette industry is largely unregulated at this time, and that includes everything from e-juice ingredients to health claims.

If you’ve decided that e-cigarettes are something you’d like to try, you can generally find one at any number of stores and online retailers — in fact, both disposable and refillable e-cigs are sold behind the counter at most gas stations and convenience stores.

Since e-cigs are so widely available, why would someone order an e-cigarette online? Much like regular tobacco use, everyone has their preferences. For those who want a personalized vapor experience, there are a few variables to consider that affect the “feel” of an e-cig:

  • Design – E-cigs differ in both size and functionality. There are mini e-cigarettes, which look most like a traditional cigarette. Mid-size models, such as the Vapor Smarts, have more power and can create a stronger “hit” of vapor. Finally, there are advanced personal vapors (APVs), which can get quite expensive, but provide the most customization.
  • Performance – This can affect how much vapor is produced, the “throat hit” or burning sensation that e-cig users feel, and the battery life of each model.
  • Product Quality – While many e-cigarettes are manufactured in China, more trustworthy retailers will offer at least a 30-day warranty for the product. Additionally, e-juice that is made, or at least tested, in the US is preferable.

There are other factors to consider when shopping for an e-cigarette, an extensive explanation of which can be found here

How Vapor Smarts Stacks Up

I have not used the Vapor Smarts brand e-cigarette, but as I sit at my writer’s desk that’s cluttered to a cliche, I can see my own e-cigarette and tell you that they look 100% identical, save for the retailer’s mark at the bottom.

Like many mass-produced items, e-cigarettes are available for purchase in bulk. Online shops often do so, rebrand the item, and sell them at a higher price to customers. While I can’t say for certain that Vapor Smarts’s e-cigarettes and my own (which I purchased at the convenience store down the street) were made in exactly the same place, I can at least speak from the experience of using a similar model.

Most reusable e-cigarettes, including the Vapor Smarts model, are charged via USB (you can also use any plug adaptor to charge it directly through an outlet). The devices are easy to use right out of the box:

  • Plug them in for a complete charge
  • Unscrew the mouthpiece to fill the clear chamber with e-juice
  • Give it a few minutes, so that the wicks can absorb liquid
  • Press the button while inhaling, as you would with a normal cigarette

Vapor Smarts Costs

Customers can purchase the Vapor Smarts Starter Kit, which includes:

  • 1 Long-life battery
  • 1 USB charger
  • 1 Vapor Smarts e-cigarette
  • 3 Bottles of e-juice
  • 2 Refill tanks
  • 1 Carrying case

The Starter Kit is available for a 14-day “trial period” for $4.95 shipping and handling. Customers who fail to cancel their order will then be charged $109.63 on the fifteenth day after their original order.

Once this occurs, you’ll also be enrolled in the Vapor Smarts monthly subscription program that will subsequently charge customers $69.63 every 30 days for an additional ten cartridges.

Important note: In our experience, free trials are intended to make sure you’ll end up paying full price, and autoship programs are just a way to charge you as much as possible before you cancel. Because of this, we generally recommend avoiding products sold using these methods.

If you dislike Vapor Smarts, you must contact customer service at 1-888-779-0642 to cancel your autoship enrollment, although the coompany does not provide refunds for customers who fail to cancel during the trial period. While the site does state that batteries are covered by a lifetime warranty, no additional information is provided on a warranty covering the Vapor Smarts e-cigarette itself.

What People Are Saying About Vapor Smarts

Due to the overwhelming number of online e-cigarette retailers that have popped up recently, it’s nearly impossible to locate reviews of a single, small brand.

Vapor Smarts is not registered with the Better Business Bureau, nor can I find any unique reviews of their product. Customers who have purchased from similar companies do complain about the billing practices and recurring charges from auto-ship programs.

It should be noted that Vapor Smarts does not allow customers to purchase their brand of e-cigarette without signing up for auto-shipments.

Final Thoughts About Vapor Smarts

Once again, I haven’t purchased from Vapor Smarts. However, in my opinion a few things about them stink.

While auto-ship programs always raise a red flag, there’s absolutely no reason for Vapor Smarts to lock their customers into a $60+ a month fee. Bottles of e-juice run about $5, and even the heaviest smokers would be hard-pressed to use 12 a month.

The lack of company or manufacturer information raises more red flags. The Vapor Smarts single-page website does little more than try to convince customers to purchase their product, without offering any information that could hold Vapor Smarts accountable should the device turn out to be defective.

Finally, Vapor Smarts makes some unfounded claims and promises. As I’ve covered earlier, there is simply no proof that e-cigarettes are better for your health than normal tobacco use. As such, it’s completely irresponsible of Vapor Smarts to claim that users can smoke e-cigarettes around their families, including children, without being concerned about health risks.

While it’s less important, e-cigarettes do smell funny — something that long-time smokers won’t be able to tell, but the non-smokers around you will.

Because the vapor from e-cigarettes could very well be harmful to one’s health, even when subjected to it second-hand, e-cigarettes are most certainly not allowed inside buildings and airports! Nor are they allowed inside planes  — something that’s such a ridiculous claim, I feel it discredited the entire Vapor Smarts site. E-cigarettes are such a topic of debate that many non-smoking areas, including coffee shop and restaurant patios, ban the use of them as well.

If you’re considering purchasing an e-cigarette, you may just consider doing so with one of the numerous online retailers who offer warranties for their products. Or even better, head down to a local e-cigarette retailer and purchase one from a knowledgeable sales associate who can suggest models that might work best for you.

    Not a scam

VaporSmarts is not a scam. I bought it about six months ago, and couldn't get used to it at first, since I had been a smoker for over 20 years. I was working on a little beach house I have, and when I got back home, I started using it again. Then I bought the Nicorette patches, which helped me with the nicotine cravings. The VaporSmarts helped me with the blowing smoke part, and, as anyone who smokes knows, it's really hard to quit smoking when you want to blow some smoke after meals, and things like that. You blow A LOT of vapor, so it feels good, and it feels like you're smoking. To me, that was the best part. And those little bottles last a long time.

After three months, I can happily and proudly say that I haven't smoke another cigarette in two months (hehehehe), and I am really happy about that. I don't have the will power that some people have, and needed help, and in turn VaporSmarts helped me quit. I mean, now I want to quit VaporSmarts too, because we don't know if it will harm me on the long run, but at least I'm not smoking cigarettes anymore. I feel a lot better, and I'm saving about $50 a week.

Vapor Smart/Renew Cigs Survey Starter Kit Scam

Received an email asking that I complete a customer service survey for my cable provider. Apparently the people running this scam also do surveys of many other companies including banks, Microsoft and so on. In my case, the survey was purportedly on behalf of CenturyLink.

At the end of the survey, there were a number of special offers for completing the survey.

One was for an e-cig starter kit from Renew Cigs for a $4.95 shipping fee.

Have received nothing from the company, but saw a charge for $117.30 on my account today, 15 days after they first charged the account the $4.95.

From complaints about them elsewhere, part of the scam is that you can only cancel the subscription within 14 days of placing the order.

Will update Monday when I try to reach their customer service number by phone to ask that the charge and "subscription" be canceled.

I think this is a scam.

The site for VaporSmarts popped up on the QVC site. A free trial offer for only $4.95 shipping cost. This was on 3/3/2015. Since I've been wanting to quit, I clicked on and ordered. That was a big mistake. Today on 3/15/2015, I'm logged on to my bank and see they charged me $100.00 plus change for VaporSmarts. This is in addition to the $4.95 shipping which is the only thing I authorized. This is Sunday, VaporSmarts is closed but I will call tomorrow and of course go to my bank. I would rate big 000's as a rating.

I can't find a method to cancel on their website. It's difficult to get hold of someone there. I will have to put a hold on my Credit card. Once you order they just have your credit card information and keep it!

  • Billing Scam

Completed a survey for Verizon for a choice of supposed free gifts. This E-cig was one of the selections of free gifts. I just pay 4.99 shipping. Today, a Saturday, I look at my credit card bill and see where they charged me $109.00. I have to wait until Monday to stop them from stealing more from me. I have been scammed!
