WonderSlim’s menu of more than 100 meal replacement shakes, bars, smoothies, breakfasts, lunches, desserts, snacks, and portion-controlled diet plans promise to deliver a simple, delicious, affordable, and effective way of losing weight. How?

These individual products and meals—designed by Registered Dieticians and Nutritionists—are meant to replace the “high-calorie, over-sized, unhealthy” food typically responsible for weight gain. They’re also packed with protein, which we’re told can help relieve cravings, boost fat burning, and increase energy.

And to help keep your metabolism running at peak efficiency, you’ll eat every two to three hours (or, six times per day).

Unlike some other diet programs, you get to choose the WonderSlim foods you love, so your experience is completely customizable. And you get to choose when and how you want them since there’s no subscription required.

Depending on the source, it’s reported that somewhere between 90 and 95 percent of those who start a weight loss diet won’t achieve success (however they might define it). Given this astronomical number, is there anything about WonderSlim’s programs and products that might increase your chances of a favorable outcome?

Let’s start by zooming out and quickly covering how the body gains and loses weight.

The Basics of Weight Loss and Gain

We’re not here to bore you with a science lesson, so the simple explanation is that long-term weight fluctuation is largely a matter of calorie intake and output. If you take in more calories than you consume, this extra energy is stored inside specialized cells in the form of fat for later use.

But, if you continue consuming an excessive number of calories, these cells will keep filling up and accumulating, eventually leading to weight gain and obesity, along with all of the associated health concerns.

On the other hand, if you continually expend more calories than you consume through a combination of diet and physical activity, these fat cells will shrink, and you'll lose weight. Specifically, one pound of fat is equivalent to 3,500 calories, so if you restrict your diet by 500 calories per day, then you'll lose about one to two pounds per week.

With these core details in mind, how does WonderSlim help you create this calorie deficit and thereby lose weight?

Taking a Closer Look at WonderSlim’s Products

Protein is a macronutrient that’s essential for the body to maintain normal function, including muscle repair and growth, as well as burning fat for energy. It can also help you feel fuller when you’re trying to lose weight, and can balance sugar highs and lows, and therefore curb cravings.

As such, all of WonderSlim’s products focus on providing extra protein support.

How Do WonderSlim’s Diet Plans and Kits Work?

Each WonderSlim Diet Plan includes a handy "Food Selection List & Shopping Guide" that can help you practice “healthy grocery shopping, portion control, and cooking habits” necessary for losing weight and keeping it off for the long-term (not mention enjoying social eating with friends and family). This is in addition to the company’s products and meals.

Keep in mind that the amounts of grocery foods you use will vary depending on the plan you choose, although they emphasize that you’ll typically “have some protein, starch, fruit and vegetable servings, including a “healthy grocery meal” for dinner.”

Each of these is available in women’s and men’s versions, with gender-specific calorie intake. Based on what we learned from the website, though, macronutrient (proteins, carbs, fat) percentages remain the same. They’re also available in 14 or 28-day versions.

What Can We Learn from WonderSlim Customer Reviews?

The vast majority of customer reviews on WonderSlim’s website seemed highly positive at the time of our research.

We also encountered nearly 200 additional customer reviews on TrustPilot, who had cumulatively given WonderSlim an average rating of about four stars.

Common compliments related to great customer support, good-tasting food, and competitive pricing, while the few complaints frequently revolved around ordering problems. A company representative responded to many complaints and compliments.

On Amazon, we encountered hundreds more reviews for WonderSlim's many products, whose average ratings typically ranged between 3.5 and five stars. Although many customers cited the same compliments noted above, additional common complaints related to taste and texture preferences.

As a company, WonderSlim has been in business since 2001 and is based out of Wilmington, NC. They held an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, based on one closed complaint, as of 2/27/18.

WonderSlim vs. the Competition

There are a wide variety of meal replacement products and diet programs to suit just about any need or preference, although here were some of the most popular options at the time of our research:

Company Pricing Core Features
WonderSlim $2.95 - $267.84 for products; $7.08+ per day for diet plans High-protein, low-calorie/sugar products; three gender-specific diet plans where you’ll eat every few hours and make your own dinners
Medifast $149 - $399 for plans (no individual products available) Two diet plans where you’ll eat every few hours and make some of your own meals, can accommodate special dietary needs
NutriSystem $228.99 - $333.99 for 4-week diet plans (no individual products available) Pre-portioned meals delivered to your door, eat six times per day, gender-specific programs, customizable menus
Ideal Protein No prices listed 4-phase protocol (weight loss and healthy lifestyle education), one-on-one coaching, includes meal replacement products and recipes

Jenny Craig $19/mo (plus enrollment fees and the cost of food) Dedicated personal consultant, includes pre-portioned foods (eat 6X daily), 500 centers around the country

When deciding which of these options to go with (whether WonderSlim or a third party), Prevention starts by emphasizing that meal replacement products really can help you lose some initial weight, especially if you ”have no idea where to start,” or “have trouble with decision making or meal preparation.”

However, they might not always represent the most sustainable option, since “these meals might not always be readily available, they might become too expensive,” and they “don't teach the foundations of a healthy diet.”

With these important caveats in mind, Kathleen M. Zelman, MPH, RD, LD, emphasizes that you should know what to look for with these products. Ideally:

  • 220-230 calories per serving
  • Less than 5 grams of fat per serving
  • 3-5 grams of fiber per serving
  • 10-15 grams of protein per serving
  • Fortified with a third of daily vitamins and minerals

She also points out that you should limit your consumption to no more than once each day, preferably only one to two times per week.

We’ve certainly covered a lot of territory in this article, but how can you use it to come to a conclusion about WonderSlim?

Our Final Thoughts About WonderSlim

When choosing any weight loss program, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease (NIDDK) emphasizes that you should start by talking with a healthcare professional. They can recommend options based on your medical history and current weight, as well as your eating, drinking, and physical activity habits.

Another important consideration is that successfully losing weight and keeping it off for the long-term involves not just proper nutrition, but also physical activity, which as we can see from the table in the previous section, is a component often not addressed by meal replacement dieting programs.

Finally, like changing any other ingrained habit (smoking cigarettes, drinking too much caffeine/alcohol, etc.), what works perfectly for you might be a total failure for someone else. In other words, it’s an intensely personal process, so it might take some trial and error before finding the ‘perfect’ solution.

With all of this said, WonderSlim has been in business for many years, offers both products and programs that are competitively priced, and comes with mostly positive online customer feedback. They also offer a 30-day refund policy on one opened, semi-used product so that you can get your money back (less S&H, of course) if you find it doesn’t match your preferences or needs.

    Great plan and food

I love this program. The food is all powders - you mix with water but they are tasty and give me the variety I want. It is easy to follow too. Customer service is awesome, shipping was fast, and my order came correct! This is my first week and I am not bored yet! I purchased the month plan and liked that I could pick my own foods. I opted out of bars for example because too tempting for me. I plan on doing this for 3 months with a goal of 30 pounds. Exercise is key! I walk 10,000 steps a day and that helps and I drink a ton of water. It’s about 1,000 calories a day. For diabetics the low carb/sugar is perfect.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
