Zz Snore Review

Calling itself a way to stop snoring tonight, Zz Snore is a nasal spray designed to help keep the throat moisturized. The creators of the product describe it as an alternative to uncomfortable devices and straps, as well as positioning pillows.

The main claim is that Zz Snore is able to reduce resistance in the upper airways, allowing air to flow more freely and relieving snoring in the process. To use the spray, you’ll need to apply 4-6 drops of the solution in each nostril just before bed.

The National Sleep Foundation reports that snoring affects approximately 90 million American adults–37 million on a regular basis. There’s clearly a great many of us that could benefit from an effective snoring solution, to be sure, but in order to determine if Zz Snore is truly worth your money, we need to take a look at what causes snoring in the first place.

What Causes Snoring?

According to Mayo Clinic, snoring occurs when the muscles in the roof of your mouth, tongue, and throat relax. Sometimes, they can relax enough that they partially block the airway, causing vibrations that we know as snoring.

The article goes on to state that a variety of factors can contribute to this issue, from uncontrollable aspects like your mouth anatomy to lifestyle choices like alcohol consumption, sleep time, and sleeping position.

Symptoms of snoring range wildly, include the following:

  • Noise during sleep
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Morning headaches
  • Sore throat
  • Restless sleep
  • Gasping or choking at night
  • High blood pressure
  • Chest pain at night
  • Snoring so loud that it disrupts your partner

In some cases, snoring can be indicative of a disorder called obstructive sleep apnea. Those with OSA often have tissues that almost fully block the airway, preventing them from breathing properly -- and even causing them to completely stop breathing for minutes at a time during the middle of the night.

Now that we understand these foundational aspects of snoring a bit better, let’s take a look at the ingredients used within Zz Snore’s formula.

Zz Snore Ingredients

According to the product’s main website, Zz Snore includes the following ingredients: sodium chloride, glycerol, polysorbate 80, edetate sodium, potassium sorbate, and something called HPW.

It’s important to remember at this point that the makers of Zz Snore state that the product simply moisturizes the throat. WebMD reports that glycerol is sometimes applied to the skin as a moisturizer, though there is no mention of it being used in nasal sprays.

As for the rest of the ingredients, they don’t seem to be anything other than additives (edetate sodium), preservatives (potassium sorbate), and surfactants and emulsifiers (polysorbate 80).

So, while it looks as though the product might be able to provide some moisturization, it does so several added ingredients. Our next question: Would this moisturization actually lead to fewer incidents of snoring?

In an article from the Los Angeles Times, Dr. Craig Schwimmer, medical director of the Snoring Center in Dallas and a spokesman for the American Academy of Otolaryngology, gave his thoughts on the matter. His verdict? Probably not.

He says that there’s no medical reason to think that simply moisturizing the throat would prevent snoring, as a dry throat is not a common cause (as we learned above). He goes on to say that the oils in many of these products might provide some relief, if only by decongesting the throat and nasal passageways, allowing air to flow more freely as a result.

The creators of Zz Snore have included a link to a clinical study on their website that seems to demonstrate that some users did in fact experience snoring relief in trials with the product, though this was based primarily on “increased inspiratory muscular tone in the upper airway muscles and by reduced pharyngeal resistance.” (Editor’s note: As of our last update, the link to the clinical study was no longer working.)

The numbers, however, were not fully conclusive, with 7.9 percent reporting ceasing snoring altogether, 40 percent reporting a reduction, and 43 percent saying they experienced no effect at all. Of course, one study (especially a company-sponsored one) isn’t enough to prove any claims regardless, but it is something worth noting.

What about any negative side effects, though?

Potential Zz Snore Side Effects

According to the manufacturer, no serious adverse side effects were found during clinical trials of Zz Snore.

WebMD confirms that the threat of serious side effects is rare for nasal sodium chloride sprays like Zz Snore.

They do say that if you experience any of the following reactions, you should “seek immediate medical attention:”

  • Rash
  • Itching and/or selling
  • Severe dizziness
  • Trouble breathing

Zz Snore Pricing and Return Policy

Zz Snore is currently available directly through the manufacturer from two different websites:

  • One bottle on one Zz Snore site: $39.95 plus $4.95 shipping and tax
  • Monthly subscription on one Zz Snore site: $29.95 per month plus $4.95 shipping and tax
  • One bottle on another Zz Snore site: $24.97 with free shipping

Each bottle of Zz Snore contains 30ml of solution, which the manufacturer claims is enough for about 25-30 treatments.

The company's subscription plan is enticing, as the price per bottle is 25-percent more affordable. However, keep in mind that, once you sign up for the subscription, it’s your responsibility to call Zz Snore to cancel your subscription if you no longer want the product.

We suggest foregoing the subscription and choosing the site with the lower price, as it’s around $5 cheaper than the subscription rate and you don’t have to commit to recurring charges.

The number you call to cancel is (800) 516-9723.

As for the return policy, the company states that all refund requests are “carefully considered” by the service team, which can be reached at the number above or at customerservice@buyzzsnore.com.

Customer service is available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PST Monday through Friday. You’ll need to obtain a return merchandise authorization number before you can send the product back.

Zz Snore vs. Alternative Snoring Relief Options

If you or someone you care about suffers from symptoms of snoring, chances are you’ve wondered what other options like Zz Snore might be out there to help prevent this issue. Searching Google and Amazon for terms like “nasal snoring relief spray,” we were able to find a number of different products, some of which featured similar claims, ingredients, and pricing.

One product we encountered, Asonor, uses the exact same ingredients found in Zz Snore. This product is even referenced in the clinical studies provided by Zz Snore’s manufacturer. We reached out to customer service, who told us that Asonor is indeed a rebranded version intended for European sale.

Asonor is available on Amazon, though, where it had accumulated 49 customer reviews. Many users said that they were very satisfied with the product, claiming that it helped ease their snoring, if not eliminate it entirely.

Outside of this product, no identical formulations were found during our research, but there are dozens of different nasal sprays with various ingredients on Amazon, most of which run for about half the price of a single bottle of Zz Snore. None of those utilized glycerol in their formulations, however.

So, if you’re looking to purchase a snoring relief spray, what factors should you keep in mind? Consider this:

  • Does the product feature clinical studies that demonstrate its effectiveness?
  • Are there real customer reviews and discussions around the product? Are users happy with it, in general?
  • Is there a solid, easy-to-understand return and refund policy in place?
  • Does the pricing seem fair relative to other options that promise similar results?

Outside of nasal sprays, there are a number of methods out there designed to prevent snoring, including the following:

  • Oral devices
  • Positioning pillows
  • Chin straps
  • Surgical procedures
  • Oral medications

WebMD also offers a few lifestyle changes that you might find useful on your quest to end the night time rumbling, such as changing your sleep position, losing weight, and avoiding alcohol. Ultimately, we’d recommend talking to your doctor about which of these options might be most effective and applicable to your unique situation.

If you’d like to learn more about finding an anti-snoring product that really works in the meantime, we’ve written a guide about the subject that you can read right here.

The Bottom Line: Is Zz Snore Right for You?

Looking at Zz Snore, the product offers a clinical study as proof of its effectiveness. Judging from this alone, you might be forgiven for thinking that the spray is a miracle cure for snoring.

However, as we discussed earlier, the study actually showed that a large portion of users experienced no effect whatsoever, and out of almost 200 participants, only a small portion (7.9 percent) actually eliminated their snoring problem entirely. In addition, we learned that simply moisturizing the throat isn’t likely to meaningfully impact the symptoms of snoring, according to Dr. Schwimmer’s comments above.

On the other side of the coin, however, lie the opinions of multiple customers who reviewed a rebranded version of product that uses the exact same formulation. Many stated that the product helped curb snoring, and in some cases, eliminated it entirely.

Ultimately, we feel that the best path forward from here would be to talk with your doctor about the issues that you are facing. That way, you can be sure you’ll get the most informed, actionable advice possible.

Whatever you decide to do, be sure you keep the return policy of the product in mind going into a potential purchase, since you’ll lose your initial shipping and handling charges (if any), plus whatever it will cost to send back to the manufacturer.
