About Foligain Trioxidil

Claiming to use modern science for better hair, Foligain’s lineup of 16 different products promises to use a blend of researched ingredients that can provide men and women with powerful anti-thinning solutions and younger-looking, revitalized hair.

At the center of many of these is the company’s Trioxidil technology, which they claim utilizes a triple action bioactive formula to:

  • Improve follicle strength for stronger, thicker, fuller hair that’s better anchored to the scalp
  • Reduce the formation of DHT to help prevent follicle miniaturization
  • Boost matrix vitality to deliver targeted anti-thinning
  • Lock in moisture to help improve scalp health and prevent inflammation

Combined with these formulas’ top-quality ingredients, Foligain claims Trioxidil has been clinically shown to help regrow hair faster than minoxidil.

But do any of these products represent breakthroughs? In other words, for the price, what kinds of results might you experience with Foligain? Here, we’ll take it step-by-step so you can find some answers.

The Basics of Hair Loss

Just like there can be multiple causes for many different medical conditions, hair loss can be triggered can a variety of factors, including genetics, certain medications and procedures, vitamin deficiencies, grooming and cleanliness habits, and hormone changes.

However, the most common cause of hair loss for men and women is androgenic alopecia, frequently referred to as male and female pattern baldness. It’s so common, in fact, that 85 percent of men will experience it after the age of 50, and 50 percent of women.

Here, a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) ‘attacks’ hair follicles, causing them to produce increasingly thinner hair. Eventually, the follicle goes dormant and stops producing hair altogether.

While there’s currently no cure for pattern baldness, common treatments include over-the-counter medications like minoxidil, prescription options like finasteride, and even surgical options like hair transplantation. Comparatively, how do Foligain’s products work?

Taking a Closer Look at Foligain’s Product Lineup

Interviewed for a 2009 Newsweek article, Paula Begoun, author of Beautypedia.com, noted: “All shampoo is essentially a cleanser. Only the first five or six ingredients impact the formula’s effectiveness.”

She continues, “Most often, the ingredients lower down on the list aren’t present in high-enough concentrations to have any impact on the shampoo’s performance.”

As a result, we’ll only focus on these first six in each of Foligain’s formulations below.

How Effective Are Foligain’s Hair Care Ingredients?

Taking all of this together and returning to the Newsweek article referenced earlier, the majority of these first ingredients largely constitute:

  • Surfactants (decrease surface water tension) – Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Dextran Propylene Glycol, Polysorbate 80, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Laureth-7, Oleth-20
  • Foaming AgentsDisodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate
  • Acidic IngredientsEthoxydiglycol, Lactic Acid
  • Silicones & Fatty OilsCocamide MEA, C13-14 Isoparaffin
  • PreservativesKetoconazole
  • Emollients (soften and condition skin) – Glycol Stearate, Butylene Glycol, Cetyl Alcohol, Panthenol, Polyacrylamide

However, there are a couple of standouts.

According to Truth In Aging, acetyl tetrapeptide-3 could provide several hair-related benefits, including “reinforcing the structures surrounding hair follicles, boost[ing] type III collagen synthesis, as well as collagen VII, a major constituent of the anchoring fibrils located in the basement membrane (DEJ) around the hair papilla. Acetyl tetrapeptide-3 is supposed to lengthen the hair shaft and increase follicle length by 35% after only eight days of treatment.”

Furthermore, Medline Plus indicates the minoxidil in some of Foligain’s products “is used to stimulate hair growth and to slow balding. It is most effective for people under 40 years of age whose hair loss is recent. Minoxidil has no effect on receding hairlines. It does not cure baldness; most new hair is lost within a few months after the drug is stopped.”

Salicylic acid is reported to be an effective exfoliant (it can help shed dead skin cells) for scalp health, although we didn’t find any direct correlation between it and pattern baldness on sites like the Natural Medicines Database, WebMD, and Examine.com.

What About the Ingredients In Foligain’s Supplements?

Although they have somewhat similar formulations, there are two different dietary supplements in the Foligain lineup:

Hair Regrowth Supplement

Whether for men or women, this oral formula promises to “fortify and thicken fine, thinning hair from the inside out.” According to the supplement facts label, it contains:

  • Niacin (as niacinamide) 40mg
  • Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine HCl) 30mg
  • Folate (folic acid) 200mcg
  • Biotin 1000mcg
  • Pantothenic Acid (d-calcium pantothenate) 30mg
  • Iodine (from kelp) 150mcg
  • Zinc (from zinc gluconate) 15mg
  • Copper (from copper gluconate) 3mg
  • Saw Palmetto (Serenoa serrulata) Extract (berry) 320mg
  • Nettle (Urtica dioica) Extract (root) 300mg
  • Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) Extract (leaf) 100mg
  • Beta-Sitosterol (from plant sterols) 100mg
  • Ginger (Zingiber officinale) Extract (rhizome) 100mg
  • L-Taurine USP 100mg
  • American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) Extract (root) 50mg

We think it’s important to start by noting that, according to many well-respected organizations like the National Institutes of Health and the American Academy of Family Physicians (to name just two), otherwise healthy individuals do not need to take dietary supplements.

With this caveat in mind, the Natural Medicines Database, WebMD, and Examine.com indicated there’s insufficient clinical evidence that any of Hair Regrowth Supplement’s ingredients can address hair loss in any meaningful way, for otherwise healthy individuals.

Color Rescue Supplement For Graying Hair

This product contains:

  • Vitamin B6 (as pyridoxine HCl) 10mg
  • Folate (folic acid) 400mcg
  • Biotin 300mcg
  • Pantothenic Acid (d-cal. pantothenate) 300mg
  • Zinc (as zinc oxide) 10mg
  • Saw Palmetto (Serenoa serrulata) Extract (berry) 300mg
  • Catalase 5,000 BU
  • PABA 200mg
  • L-Tyrosine 200mg
  • Horsetail (Equisetum arvense) Extract (herb) 100mg
  • Nettle (Urtica dioica) Extract (root) 100mg
  • Beta-Sitosterol (from plant sterols) 40mg
  • Chlorophyll 10mg
  • Fo-Ti (Polygonum multiflorum) (root) 10mg
  • Barley (Hordeum vulgare) (grass) 10mg

According to these same authoritative sites, there’s insufficient clinical evidence that these ingredients can prevent graying hair or address it once it occurs.

What About Potential Side Effects For Foligain’s Products?

The Natural Medicines Database and WebMD report that most of Foligain’s ingredients are generally well tolerated.

For topical application, they indicate common side effects include redness or irritation at the application site. Internally, mild digestive upset was most commonly referenced. No specific circumstances were noted.

However, niacin can cause temporary flushing, nettle can cause swelling, and ginkgo can lead to constipation, forceful heartbeat, and allergic skin reactions.

They report that beta-sitosterol has been linked to erectile dysfunction (ED) and loss of interest in sex, and taking more than 5mg of pantothenic acid per day may increase chances of experiencing diarrhea. For reference, 30mg is included in each dose of Hair Regrowth Supplement, with 300mg contained in the Color Rescue Supplement.

How Much Does Foligain Cost?

Foligain’s hair thinning topical products ranged in price between $34.95 and $46.95, while the Hair Growth Supplement was $59.95 and the Graying Supplement $39.95.

These products were also available through third-party sites like Biovea and Amazon.com, sometimes for lower prices.

The Return Policy link on the Foligain website wasn’t functioning at the time of our research, so we emailed customer support at customerservice@foligain.com and will update this article as soon as a response is received.

Are There Other Hair Loss Systems Like Foligain?

Even if you’re only limiting your search to topical hair loss products, or to internal supplements, there are literally thousands of different products competing for the same customers as Foligain, at just about every imaginable price point. Where should you begin?

In How to Choose a Hair Loss Product, Even if You Don’t Know What to Do, we discuss that “Minoxidil is the current standard treatment for hair loss,” so you might want to start there. However, if you’ve experienced advanced hair loss for more than five years and are older, this ingredient might not deliver meaningful results.

Some specific ingredients have been shown to help address general hair health, including collagen, biotin, B complex vitamins, zinc, calcium, methylsulfonylmethane, phytoceramides, and hyaluronic acid, several of which are found in Foligain’s supplements. However, we found that these were also commonly found in third-party supplements, often for less money.

Finally, if you’re a woman who’s experiencing hair loss, the minoxidil in Rogaine might be of benefit, as might finasteride.

What Are Customers Saying About Foligain In Their Reviews?

As mentioned earlier, most of Foligain’s products were also sold through Amazon.com at the time of our research. Their most popular, the 5% Minoxidil Hair Regrowth Treatment for Men, had more than 630 customer reviews and an average rating of 4.4 stars.

There, most compliments appeared to revolve around effective results (hair growth and reduced thinning), while complaints (what few there were) seemed related to no results and side effects like dryness and rashes.

The second most popular Foligain product on the Biovea USA website was the Stimulating Supplement For Thinning Hair, with 27 reviews and an average rating of 4.8 stars. Many compliments mirrored those found on Amazon. There were no complaints.

Our Final Thoughts About Foligain

Based on what we found reported on sites like the Natural Medicines Database, WebMD, Truth In Aging, and Medline Plus, it appears that the majority of Foligain’s topical and supplemental ingredients have insufficient clinical evidence related to their benefits for hair loss in otherwise healthy individuals.

And for those ingredients with sufficient reported evidence, such as minoxidil and acetyl tetrapeptide-3, we encountered dozens—perhaps hundreds—of other products on the marketplace that included them, frequently at lower prices.

Based on these details, we think you might achieve the most value for your money by making an appointment with your doctor, who can properly diagnose the type and extent of your hair loss. Then, they can discuss potential treatment options, and whether or not you should consider products like Foligain.

In the meantime, we reached out to the company for additional information, so be sure to bookmark this article, and we'll update soon.

I've been using this Trioxidil every day for four months now. The good side is there no side effects compared to Minox. The bad side is there is no effect at all. It's like I never started using this product and at this price, it can be considered as a scam!

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend
