Compression is good, but it's nothing new here

By Anonymous , Houston, TX

As an active cyclist, I've been wearing compression gear on my legs during and after competition for years and it does aid in recovery. The Tommie Copper stuff is fine, but is no better than 2XU, which has been in the business of compression for many years. I simply have an issue with the exaggerated claims in the commercials, specifically the rodeo rider ad. The riders claims that by simply wearing the Tommie Copper compression shirt, his old shoulder injury (that limited his range of motion and some of his strength) has practically disappeared. By wearing a t-shirt, this kind of thing just doesn't happen. It's false advertising. Period. Compression is good and another (decent) product in the mix helps keep competition up and manufacturers on point. That being said, don't believe everything you hear or read.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Surprised on may levels

By K D Butler , Toronto Ontario Canada

I was first surprised to find this advertised on a Canadian TV station showing a Canadian (both teams) hockey game to then order it and find it is a company in the US and comes from Georgia. Unusual to find advertised products coming from US - usually already in Canada. Second I was very surprised at the price. Much higher than I thought but, then I went ahead and ordered two knee supports. For close to $100 a small package shows up in the mail (shipping cost over priced) in a fancy bag and end up by being two flimsy looking fancy pieces of nylon/silk fabric for an outrageous price. Could have taken an old pair of panty hose and wrapped them around my knee for nothing. So not impressed on these points. Now I'll wait and see how my knees opinions are.

Quality of the product

By Rhonda Flint , Natural Bridge, VA

I bought two pairs of women's tights, one shirt and a pair of socks. I had a hole in one pair of my tights. So far, considering I only have them for 8 months, and having only wore them about 20 times, for what they cost I don't think they held up very good. And the socks where way too tight, I couldn't wear them. The tights and shirt did make my joints feel better while working out, just didn't hold up very well for the price. Just two pair of tights and shirt were 69x2+49=$187.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Unable to Cancel order/Returns Policy

By Tony, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Verified Reviewer

I have used the Tommie Copper knee sleeve for many years in order to reduce the swelling effects after my ACL surgery. I have been very satisfied with the product as it seems to work better than the over-the-counter tensors and I wear it everyday, all day. I play goalie in a men's ice hockey league, so my knees do take a beating. In the past I have used various knee injections (i.e Synvisc, Orthovisc) to minimize the pain and swelling, this year I have not used the injections but only the sleeve. That's the good part of the story, now for the bad.

Recently I ordered an ankle sleeve, received a 15% discount email to apply to the order, of which the coupon didn't work. Before the order was processed, I tried to cancel it as I had located the same article in a store locally. I sent numerous emails to their Customer Service Department, only to be told the order cannot be canceled as it is processed in another warehouse. What company these days can't cancel an order less than 24 hours after being ordered? I was told I could return the order (minus the $12.50 Shipping & Handling Fee) once the product arrives for a full refund. I was also offered a ridiculous offer of a 15% off my next order for the inconvenience which I declined. The final outcome to this transaction is yet to be determined as I am waiting for the 5th email response from their Customer Service department.

There are many other retailers that now carry the product & very similar ones too if you must have it (Amazon, Bass Pros & As Seen On TV are a few).

Long story short:

Pros: good product, it has various results depending on the individual & yes I have recommended the product to friends.

Cons: Terrible Customer service, returns and shipping policy. Not recommended to purchase from the website.

Back relief with not enough support

By Anne Rupert , Columbiana, OH

Just purchased the Tommie Copper back support for both pain relief and support. It does not provide enough support in my opinion. It's flimsy after wearing and gets wrinkles in it, taking on a form of it's own. I plan to add vertical stays to it to keep it straight. It may be ok after that but should not have to do anything to it.

Gloves

By Bud , Kentland Indiana

Seems to help pain but not made well enough to work. It comes apart at seams. Idea is good but workmanship sucks.

Not sure how, but it works while you're wearing it!

By M B., Illinois, Verified Reviewer

I'm in my late 50's and have shoulder pain and limited range of motion. A friend recommended the compression top. There was a sale going on, so I thought it was worth a try. The product really does work...while you're wearing it. I see no long-term benefits though. Once the shirt is off, there is no more relief. If there were more fashionable styles I wouldn't mind having a couple to wear under other clothes, but the neckline is really high, so unless you're wearing turtlenecks, it will always be visible. Not without its merits, but not a cure-all or permanent fix either. I actually enjoy sleeping in it as it's nice to be able to tuck my arm under my pillow without the pain waking me up.

Tommy Copper products are great

By Claudia Swisher , Gore, VA. USA

I ordered a set of the fingerless gloves for my husband and a set of the knees for him and myself. I am very pleased with the results so far and with the company. I do plan to order more of their products. My husband and I do not like to pass on products we do not use ourselves and believe in, but these are good products and do work.

It worked for me but...

By Ellen , Vancouver, BC

I have had issues with my IT band and knee for a while. There are nights when the throbbing pain in my knee wakes me from my sleep. I tried the Tommie Copper knee sleeve and it provided relief as soon as I put it on. I slept through the night and only started to feel some aching around 5 am which was a vast improvement before I wore the knee sleeve. Unfortunately, I developed a severe reaction around the band as per the package indicated may happen due to the silicone. I had to return the product. I followed the instructions in their policy and received my refund today. It took about three weeks from the time I mailed the package, but I am shipping from Western Canada to Orange County, so I think that is not bad. I regret that I had to return the product as it did seem to work for me. It was worth the try. I have since found another compression sleeve without silicone that also seems to do the trick.

I am very satisfied

By Mike Reese , Illinois

After reading other reviews, I had to post my own. While I would agree that the shipping for my item was a little slow, it was posted on the website that my item was out of stock. I returned one of my items that I ordered because I ordered the wrong size, and I was sent the correct size within a reasonable period of time.

What I want to say really is that I ordered the tights because I have constant pain in my legs due to working long hours, being over weight and having varicose veins.i didn't expect to want to wear them when I slept but I don't like to take them off ever.

After wearing them for about three months, I am so much more productive at work because my legs feel so much better. They have helped improve my overall mood so much because I no longer feel like I am dragging around "dead legs". They may seem pricey to some people but I know for me, they are worth it.

Validation of product claims

By Alan Kris , Southern California

I am a 70-year old “weekend warrior” and I play basketball several times per week in addition to traveling to various basketball tournaments conducted as part of various Senior Olympics and Senior Games organizations. I am not an employee of Tommie Copper and have no interest – financial or otherwise – in promoting or representing the potential benefits of their products. In fact, I am a scientist and so am highly oriented to observation, measurement, cause-and-effect (outcome) analysis. That said, this review is based on my casual observations as a user of the product, not a scientific analysis of the materials and not a statistically-based blind study. However, I do have some insights that may be useful to some that are considering the use of the product.

I almost never watch infomercials, let alone buy anything from them but I just happened to see this one and decided that for the benefit of my long-term prospects of continuing to play basketball, these products were at least worth a try.

My review addresses the following key points:

  1. Are the Tommie Copper products high-quality garments from a manufacturing viewpoint? (fit, form, function, and longevity);
  2. Their function as purely compression garments vs the potential benefits of the use of copper-infused yarn vs normal yarn;
  3. Is the potential leaching or absorbing of copper into the body a potential problem?

My review of Tommie Copper claims is based on my personal use of the Tommie Copper products for about a year. I have, and regularly wear, a short-sleeved shirt, shorts and knee sleeves. I chose these products because I have had recurring bouts with shoulder pain (rotator cuff), back pain (herniated discs and sciatica), and knee pain (osteoarthritis).

Prior to my purchase of the Tommie Copper products, I had undergone extensive treatments over several years including physical therapy for my shoulders and spinal decompression (plus daily inversion) for my back. I regularly take joint supplements containing Hylauronic Acid (HA) for my joints. In addition, I lost some weight to help relieve the strain on my back and knees. (I am 6’2” and dropped from 210 down to 190). So, I had actively pursued lifestyle changes previously and had good results from these efforts. The decision to purchase TC products was just as an experiment to see if there would be any detectable benefits from their use.

Quality of Products: The products appear to be of high quality – at least equal to other top products such as Under Armour. However, I did notify the company that for the first month or so after starting to wear them, at each washing (which I do by hand in a plastic basin with cold water followed by air drying), the water would have a dark tinge to it as though either the dye or the copper were washing out. I have not noticed a change in color so it does not appear to be the dye. I cannot detect the copper content so I am not sure if the dark water is from the copper or just from the sweat from my body (I do sweat a lot). After about a year of wearing, I have noticed that the shorts do not fit as tightly as when I ordered them and the waistband has stretched significantly. It is not enough to affect my use of them but it is something to be noted. The video on the TC website that presents the manufacturing process indicates that good quality processes are used in the manufacture of the products (I am familiar with the fabric finishing industry).

The claims of comfort, dryness and temperature moderation all seem to be true based on my wearing. I do not always wear them 24x7 but I have on occasion worn them for over 24 hours and find them very comfortable in all temperature/humidity conditions and particularly beneficial during heavy exercise such as basketball. The UPF rating does not concern me even though I live in So. California.

Benefits of Copper in fabric: As TC points out in their claims, copper has been used for medical purposes for thousands of years – both as a treatment and as a preventative. Today, there are many products available which contain copper such as necklaces, bracelets, and anklets which purport to help reduce the effects of arthritis. The copper in the fabric of their products is claimed to offer improvements over these age-old methods due to the increased contact between the copper and the skin of the wearer. So, the question is: Does the wearing of copper of any sort really benefit the wearer? There have been research studies of copper bracelets but other than the testimonials on the TC website, there do not appear to be any direct studies of the TC products. The studies on bracelets have not shown any statistical proof of benefits from the copper. So, does that mean TC products containing copper likewise have no benefit? I think it depends on the wearer. I have recommended the products to some of my teammates in the basketball circuit and they have reported back good results to me. I cannot verify that the copper in the TC garments will improve oxygen transport, neutralize free radicals, or improve muscle tone (independent of my exercise regimen).

Benefits of Compression: My personal comparison is based on wearing the TC garments exclusively for about 6 months and then alternating between TC products and other high-quality compression garments. When I first started wearing the TC products, my sense was that I felt progressively more stable and pain-free over the first 3 months or so. Then things stabilized and have remained in the improved condition since then. When I alternately wear other non- copper compression garments I do not notice any difference in my condition. Whether that is because the primary benefit is in the compression and not in the copper, I have not been able to conclude. One possibility is that if the copper is, in fact, a significant benefit, I would need to stop wearing the TC products for, maybe, 3 months to notice a decline. I have not stopped for that long a period so perhaps the change is not detectable in a short-term period.

Possible leaching of Copper: I think this issue is highly dependent on an individual’s body chemistry. Copper is the main ingredient in various metal alloys including brass and bronze. Some jewelry, including native American and inexpensive costume jewelry contain copper or brass and many people will experience black or green color rubbing off when wearing such jewelry on their skin. Similarly, some musicians who play brass instruments may see discoloration on their hands and pitting on the instrument. This is due to acidic body chemistry. I do not experience discoloration from touching brass (I am a trumpet player) so I have not had any problem with copper leaching from the TC garments. However, someone with more acidic chemistry may have an issue. I don’t know that the copper content in TC is high enough to be a problem – after all, they claim that a key benefit is absorption of the copper in the body – so that is something that may need to be evaluated in more detail by those that have a concern about this.

Overall Conclusion: I find that I enjoy wearing the TC products – they are comfortable, good quality and my physical condition is better now than a year ago. How much of the improvement is due to TC vs other good quality (and less expensive) compression garments is hard to say. I will continue to try the others for awhile before I decide to re-order any TC products.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
