My experience with BetterHelp was helpful to my healing. I have struggled for many years with anxiety and stress. I got paired with an incredible therapist that helped me understand how I can improve my life. Counseling with BetterHelp

By Jasmine M., Santa Fe, NM, Verified Reviewer

I was a little skeptical about signing up with BetterHelp at first but I have been doing sessions once a week for a month now and I do not regret it at all. The money is 100% worth it.

There are hundreds of counselors to choose from and the technology is super easy to use on mobile and on desktop. There are options to text, voice message, and video message with your counselor and you can use the journal feature with the option to give them access to it or not.

I am so happy with BetterHelp, I am currently unemployed and grateful for the accessibility and sliding scale fee. What you get for the money is better than I could have imagined. I am LGBTQ and I feel so comfortable and accepted and would recommend it to anyone who is considering it.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Accessibility

Priced right

So many different options of counselors

Simple to use technology

With my current address in New Mexico it gave me an extremely limited choice of counsellors, just changed my address and I could choose from hundreds more

Too much emphasis on text therapy

By Sonia C., Maine, Verified Reviewer

I might be old school but I am looking for a traditional therapy model using modern technology. I have zero interest in texting a therapist. I don't like that the pricing model is so inflexible. For example, if you want to have bi-weekly one-hour sessions, you should only be billed for 2 hours, not a full month. I also want to be able to schedule in advance and for more than 30 minutes. What can you accomplish in 30 minutes? A full, clinical hour is optimal to really get to the nuts and bolts of issues.

So glad I found BetterHelp

By Teresa B., Cocoa Beach, FL, Verified Reviewer

I have avoided seeking behavioral therapy for so long, but things have gotten so out of control for me that I decided to seek help through an online agency. I was really worried about how it might be and I dreaded my initial session. I was very pleasantly surprised that my counselor felt like an old friend very quickly in our first conversation. She has already helped me to recognize some things in my personality that I can control and I am already feeling better. So glad I surrendered to this need for behavior therapy.

For anyone hesitant about getting help

By Avigail A., Raleigh, NC, Verified Reviewer

I found myself in such a dark place that even the thought of leaving my home to get help was exhausting. The initial appeal of BetterHelp was that I could sit in bed in my PJs and messed up hair (even at 3 pm) and still get the help I needed. I started off with texting and then as I felt the dark clouds over me start to lift away I was encouraged to try video and phone sessions. I now look forward to my weekly sessions and my life looks so much different than it did a year ago. My life has improved in ways I could not imagine and I am forever grateful for this service! If anyone feels like they just can’t reach out for help, I encourage them to try BetterHelp because it’s as simple as texting a friend but it’s got the potential to change your life.

Length of Use: 6–12 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

How easy the app is to maneuver

I can text my therapist 24/7 and she will respond in between sessions, so I don’t have to wait a week if I am in crisis

The schedule flexibility and how flexible it is to have sessions

It can be hard to afford, even with discounts, but I make sure to budget for it because there is no price on my mental health

Online counseling is incredible

By Elizabeth W., Fairbanks, AK, Verified Reviewer

I'm new to online counseling. I've participated for one month and plan to continue. Pros and Cons

Skeptical at first, now in love!

By Crystal G., Orlando, FL, Verified Reviewer

I’ve done traditional therapy before. I know being open to it had tremendously helped me. I wanted to seek help again and looked up a few different “apps” after seeing ads on Facebook and Instagram. I decided between two. This one and another one, which I can’t remember the name of. I chose BetterHelp. I have to say it was an amazing choice. Is an amazing choice. I’ve only been doing it for a few short weeks but already I feel like it’s in line with traditional therapy. The only difference, I do it from the comfort of my house. Whether by video chat, phone calls, or messaging. It’s been an extremely available and helpful tool that has allowed to me to voice concerns at any moment and get feedback that is vital to my perception and overall growth. I’m extremely impressed by the quality and comfort this app and my current therapist have been able to provide me in the midst of chaos. I would highly recommend, even if you’re skeptical. Much like I was. Give it a try. And you might truly be surprised, much like I was!

Highly recommend

By Laura S. , Buffalo, NY

Although it is a bit pricey, I like BetterHelp for the convenience and for the number of ways I have to contact my counselor. I do not have to try to find an appointment at a time that is not convenient for both of us, there is an amazing journal feature, and there are also webinars that help with a range of topics. My counselor is the best I have ever had!

BetterHelp = BEST help!

By Tracy H. , Auburn, NY

The BetterHelp app platform functions well, there are so many additional resources. Therapists respond to messages quickly and my therapist Dr. Karina Kim is AMAZING! I’m blown away by the progress I’ve been making with my PTSD. I’m so thankful I found out about BetterHelp!

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

The platform is really uneasy to use

That my insurance won’t reimburse out-of-network providers, but that’s really my insurance company, not BH

The best app if you need help.

By Linda S., New York City, NY, Verified Reviewer

Love the app because I couldn’t do live sessions automatically but able to send journal writings to the therapist and they immediately write back with help. You can write once a week or every day and the therapist has your thoughts and immediately can get back to you.

I highly recommend this app for those in need.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

The journal writing to the therapist because I do my journaling everyday but I get feedback which I never had before when just journaling by myself.

The way in finding the right therapist, how detailed you are and the time it took to find them.

The price for the actual attention that I get. It is perfect! I really feel like I am getting my money’s worth.

I haven’t done the live sessions yet, will try in a few months when I actually have the time.

Do I get a month free if I refer a friend, lol.

Sometimes it is just better to talk with someone and BetterHelp makes it easy. You can read therapist profiles before selecting. If you need help to cover the cost they can help. You can change therapists whenever there isn't a good fit. And you can text back anytime. BetterHelp really helps and it's easy to navigate.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Being able to choose therapist and change it quickly

Financial assistance

The video chat and phone call option

Irregular payment date

I finally took the leap!

By Mel P., New York, NY, Verified Reviewer

I was seeing so many ads on IG about teletherapy and how “this is your sign to sign up for therapy” that it was getting annoying, to be honest. I had tried finding a therapist on-and-off for years when I still had insurance, but never clicked with anyone. It was honestly discouraging. Fast forward to the BetterHelp ad popping up looking like one of those BuzzFeed questionnaires when I was going through a really tough time, and I thought “what’s the worst that can happen?”

I took the quiz and read through the comments, reviews, and what the service offers, but the deciding factor was definitely the price tag. As someone who’s unemployed from this pandemic and newly without insurance, I didn’t think I could afford therapy, but BetterHelp made it accessible. I was matched with a therapist within 8 hours and after reading through her bio and exchanging a few messages, I decided to set up a phone session. We got on from the jump and though I’m still relatively new to the service, I’m very happy that I stumbled upon that ad whilst scrolling through my IG explore page at 3 am.

My mental health is better for it and I feel like I’m gaining control over myself and my anxiety again, which is something I didn’t think was possible anymore. The groupinars are also very helpful (and low pressure because they’re like participating in an IG live but for a specific mental health/wellness topic you’re interested in) and supplement what I get from the individual therapy sessions.

If you’re on the fence, I’d say check it out because there’s a reason that ad popped up in the first place and you can always cancel if this service doesn’t end up being the right one for you. Good luck and stay safe y’all!

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Matching with a therapist so quickly

Being matched with a therapist that I vibe with

Groupinars

Being able to access my therapist anytime

Minor annoyances with the app like the layout of the groupinars tab

When using the app to video call you can’t use other features on the app like the journal tab, which would be helpful when reviewing with your therapist

Love BetterHelp

By Ashley D., Duluth, MN, Verified Reviewer

I have been using BetterHelp since about December or January. It took me a little bit to get matched with the right therapist, but once I did I could not recommend this app enough. It is so helpful and being able to contact your therapist via messaging makes the connection so much easier to make. I feel so comfortable over video chat because it’s not the only platform I have to communicate.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Multiple formats of communication

Great therapists

Convenient

Occasional connectivity issues

Wish you could select your therapist rather than random matching

Excellent therapy services

By Stephanie C., Rhode Island, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp is amazing...and genuinely the future of therapy. It allows for confidentiality, versatility, and freedom in scheduling. I had an issue with the first therapist I was matched with and they were great walking me through it. I ultimately was able to switch to a different one (which was easy and took about 5 minutes) and my new therapist is amazing. I have worked with many therapists in my life and have genuinely never felt as much rapid improvement as this!

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Flexibility

Confidentiality

Freedom

Difficult to match therapist on first attempt

Not covered by insurance

No in-person options available, even if the therapist is local

Better help with Dr. T

By Heather A. , Canada

BetterHelp is making it possible for my counselor and I to speak as many times a week as I need. They give me the flexibility to cancel if I need to without paying hundreds of dollars in late cancellation fees. I can't always control my chronic health condition and that can be really hard to plan. Dr. T has made me work through my trauma and breakthrough to the other side. I can never thank you enough.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Flexible with my schedule

No cancellation fees or consequences

Being matched as many times as I needed to feel I'm with the right person

The billing system blows, they only take credit card (which also sucks for young people and students)

If anything happens with payment, you cannot contact your counselor so they are left hanging and can really set back the progress

If you're thinking about it, do it!

By Jason A. , Plainfield, NJ

I was always hesitant about BetterHelp because it really felt too New Age-y and it was just a new fad. But no, y'all, this app really is amazing! Everything about it so easy and convenient. The journaling feature is really cool and you can share it with your counselor if you want. I love that I can text my counselor at any point even if we don't have an appointment and she responds when she's able to. I've recommended to my friends as well and they love it just as much as I do.
