One month in sessions!

By Jeremy M., USA, Verified Reviewer

I have been fortunate to have had a great experience thus far. Angela, my personal therapist, is excellent and is helping me weekly to work towards future goals on my journey to mental well-being and the journal aspects of the platform give me a chance to write out my thoughts when I am not so able to verbalize them. Great tools.

I hate going out. I always said it was because I hated people, but really, it is more of people are overwhelming. Having the option of online therapy has helped me tremendously. Yes, I still hate going out, but now I recognize what triggers my anxiety and have the necessary tools to manage it. I am able to say no to things without guilt, and am finally making myself a priority.

I'm here as long as I can afford it

By Georgia P., Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp is a little pricey just because you have to pay monthly in advance. I have a varying income week to week so it's a bit tricky for me. However, now I'm on it I can't imagine interacting with a therapist any other way. As long as you keep in mind that your therapist is a human being, who can't be at your beck and call, then the chat function is excellent. You can send your therapist files in any format (eg. photos, voice notes) and you can choose for your journal entries to be sent straight to them as well.

I recommend it if, like me, you always have things you want to talk about during the week but forget by the time your session comes around. You can just send thoughts over as they come to you. And your therapist can either reply when they are able, or you have it there to discuss in your session.

You only start paying once a therapist is assigned to you and if your therapist goes on holiday, you can just request a payment pause because you won't have a one-to-one session, however, you still have access to everything else.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Changing lives

By Vero M., Los Angeles, CA, Verified Reviewer

Before BetterHelp, I thought therapy was unaffordable and not easy to get because of health insurance issues and where I lived. This service has completely changed my life. It allows me to access therapy in the comfort of wherever I am, and the therapists I've tried have been wonderful. The customer service is also very kind-hearted. This is an easy way to give therapy a try and I've recommended it to many friends.

I was nervous about it at first, but now I'm confident I made the right choice.

By Rogelio A., Baldwin Park, CA, Verified Reviewer

I've had experience with counseling before but not really therapy so I wasn't sure what to expect. The first therapist I was set up with asked some basic questions and we determined that his area of expertise didn't fall in line with what I needed. I took a short survey and afterwards, they gave me a list of therapists that specialize in the areas that you are looking for. That's when I was set up with Krista Zabour and she has been amazing. I had been going through a very dark period in my life and I can honestly say that I couldn't have made it without her help and guidance. She has been attentive, courteous, and engaging. She replies to messages in a timely manner, sends links to articles/podcast, and worksheets that have been very helpful. I would recommend this service to a family member or a close friend.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Wonderful service, but expensive

By Chase W., Chattanooga, TN, Verified Reviewer

I was one of those people who knew they were interested in starting therapy, but was too scared to actually do it. That's where BetterHelp truly shines. BetterHelp is a no-shame, guilt-free, and encouraging service that offers professional therapy service online via licensed therapists contracted through them. While it is a rather expensive service, even with a plethora of discount codes and coupons given out like hot cakes, it does what it says on the box.

My only real gripe comes from their payment scheme. You are forced to pay for weeks rather than service received. If you're not scheduling video calls or messaging your therapist, you will still be billed. For how expensive it is, I do feel that this is a pretty serious pitfall, though I absolutely understand and support properly accommodating their therapists and their time.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Accessibility of the service and therapist

Stress-free and encouraging

Lots of tools for communication

Caring therapists

Support is friendly, understanding, and works with you

Best therapy I have ever had

By Conner M. , Jacksonville, FL

I would recommend BetterHelp to anyone who is either struggling with mental health, or just looking for a new perspective in general! I got matched with a therapist in about a week and she ended up being everything I could have ever hoped for. I saw her for about 3 months, and in that time, have had my life completely changed. I now have so many tools to work with that I never would have had before. Despite my depression, my outlook on life now seems very hopeful!

Waste of money

By Rabab M. , Raleigh, NC

My therapist was trying to diagnose me, which wasn't his job and he was a bit condescending. That was Dr. Elliot Sanchez. He thought I was faking my Autism. So I switched to Talia Scott. Talia is better but she's canceled two weekly sessions on me already and I'm not getting what I paid for. My last session was supposed to be tonight and that was canceled. So I'm paying for a service that I'm not getting. Very disappointed.

Doing better with Betterhelp!

By Amanda W., Constantine, MI, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp is absolutely amazing! The questionnaire was so easy to fill out and very specific to my needs. I was matched very quickly to my therapist and the options available on ways of communication are astounding! My therapist is extremely incredible. I could write a novel about how amazing Donna Birney is, but I swear that it still wouldn't do her any justice. I just can't adequately describe how truly amazing she is. She is so real, so serious and blunt, but caring and considerate. She really has a way of putting things in a way that I understand.

It is possibly the best experience in my life and I wish I could have met her years ago when I first thought about doing therapy. But I put it off for so long thinking I could just handle things, I'm strong, I've got a family to help me, I've got this! I was right, to some degree, but I didn't get it healthily. I was only strong for so long until I burned out and started losing joy in life and taking it out in unhealthy ways. Me putting it off really hindered growth. I gave advice often to people telling them that asking for help doesn't make you weak, meanwhile, I was suffering for over a decade and never asked for help!

I am just SO happy that when I finally said screw it, let's give this a shot and see how well it works, I got matched to Donna! She gets me. She understands. She relates! She encourages me to seek out joy and enjoy my life. To have fun! To take the time every day to actually care about myself, even if it's just for an hour and do something I enjoy doing! I don't think I've ever felt so at ease ever in my life. And just in 3 weeks, my anxiety and stress levels went from a traditional average of 8-10/10 down to a 5-ish. A weak 5 at that.

I didn't know therapy would help THIS much! God, how I wish I had started sooner! But I might not have met her if I did! Thank you Donna! And thank you BetterHelp!

Great option, best of the online apps

By Christopher Z. , California

I get free therapy (not BetterHelp) through my employer but it has to be in person. They are part of a large network of providers and do a great job trying to find a local therapist for workers. I tried 12 on their list, I got 1 callback. The lady I did get to respond then often failed to show to our "online" appointments (in-person became online-only during Covid). This was a giant failure. I CHOOSE to pay for BetterHelp out of pocket because the experience is better.

I tried Talkspace (again, not BetterHelp) and it was fine. The 3 or 4 therapists I tried on there were generally unprofessional. One could not remember my name, started talking to me about symptoms I didn't have that turned out to be another client, all of this while he brewed coffee off camera. BetterHelp doesn't allow this.

I got a good therapist right off the bat, a match for what I needed. The worksheets, workbooks all good. I got homework, I got redirection and some hard talk when needed. It was not a fully passive therapist. There is some truth to "you get out what you put in," and no therapist will be able to help a person that isn't ready. But here, when I was ready I got help. Every single other option out there was a failure and BetterHelp was not.

P.S. The group therapy, they offer 1 session a week on top of anything you're dealing with 1-on-1. I think they're underutilized. The therapists should probably be assigning them. I found that most people show up 1 week, blow their misery wad on the group, and never come back. This is helpful sometimes, but it's probably not the purpose. For the ones that do show up multiple times I found that it was people that seemed to like the attention, it was like they were there to "hold court" instead of be part of a group dynamic. I'm not sure how to fix this. If memberships were slightly more mandatory vs. show as you like, I think the therapists leading the groups could accomplish more. Right now these are the big weakness.

Length of Use: 6–12 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Good therapist match and it was quick

Multiple ways to communicate, including worksheets

Online – good option and gives nationwide reach

Strict cost plan, no tiered system – this was a plus of Talkspace

No "chat only" option for a lower cost, low commitment for new people trying to "dip their toes" into therapy

No option to pause – stop payment, lose therapist

No coverage on Anthem Blue Cross CA or through employer – push to partner with corporate giants

Pros and Cons

Therapists are professional

Messaging service I love

Variety in choice to do therapy

BetterHelp has saved my life!

When I joined BetterHelp I was in an extremely tough place. I had tried counseling before but the whole process of going to the office and sitting down with someone was exhausting to me so this seemed like it would be a better fit for me. I got connected to my counselor and had my first session within two days. I could instantly tell that my counselor was a great fit for me and I’ve been working with her for well over two years now. She has helped me with everything from childhood trauma, marriage issues, prenatal incarceration, pregnancy and childbirth, depression ans anxiety, legal issues, you name it!
