BetterHelp was so easy. I took a survey that matched me to a therapist that met my needs. I talked to my therapist on video call wherever I was — school parking lot, park, in my classroom after school. I could pick the times that were available. BetterHelp also gave me a discount based on my financial need. Thank you so much BetterHelp!

Serious help that actually helps!

By Cyndy F., Florida, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp is a serious platform dedicated to your therapy journey and providing tools for success. The original therapist I was assigned did not seem to be a good fit and selecting another was easy. My new therapist is amazing, always asking me what I want to get out of each session. I appreciate the handouts and other resources my therapist shares with me to help me recognize and redirect some of my negative thoughts in between sessions.

A seasoned therapee

By Martyn D., The Hague, The Netherlands, Verified Reviewer

It began as a means to get help, and now, darn it! I only notice the need when it is too late. What I was met with was a low threshold and flexible system.

What therapy should be, no more hunting for a therapist. No more weeks-long waiting lists for an intake, just to find there is no click. They find a match for you, the therapy looks like what you want it to look like. Then if it doesn't click? Then they'll arrange another match in 24 hours. If you are on the fence, this is the place to be.

Love being able to do therapy from home and get the support I need. Always feel better after a session — like I’ve been heard and cared for. I’m so appreciative of the text feature so you can reach your therapist anytime through the week and be able to get support between sessions, too. 10/10 recommend. They even offer financial aid discounts if you qualify.

Great resource for improving myself

A great help!

By Joel H., Somerset, United Kingdom, Verified Reviewer

It took some convincing, but it's really helped me grow as a person, and overcome a lot of the trauma I suffered growing up at the hands of (at times) very neglectful and abusive parents.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Therapist is empathetic and non-judgmental.

I can choose when to do it.

I have lots of little helpful tasks to do.

It costs a lot of money.

It would be good to automatically rebook the session for the following week, so there would be a continuity.

Sessions are 45 minutes long, maybe 55 minutes might be better?

Best therapeutic alliance ever!

By Violet T., San Jose, CA, Verified Reviewer

I'd tried other online therapy platforms in the past and benefited from the texting ability, but was unable to schedule live sessions. My experience with BetterHelp with text messaging plus weekly sessions has allowed me to make tremendous progress in only 6 months.

I was matched with a therapist who utilizes the therapeutic approaches I have felt most helpful (trauma-informed, solution-focused, existentialist, DBT), but had experience working with people with addiction issues, was LGBT-friendly, and truly partnered with me by providing a safe space for me to not only dig into the trauma that has complicated my adult relationships, but to explore the values and strengths which have contributed to my resilience.

Being a writer, this platform has been a safe space to speak freely with a trusted therapist. Life happens between therapy sessions and getting real-time feedback helps to defuse problem situations before they blow up into something which needs to be processed at length.

My therapist was able to offer me a standing Monday 7 pm appt. which is perfect with my work schedule.

Working in the field as a counselor, myself, I am grateful to Better Help for helping me to become a better counselor. Healed people heal people.

Video quality isn't the best, but really good

By Faye S., Clinton, UT, Verified Reviewer

So far, my experience with BetterHelp has been great. It's cheap and it's useful. You can journal whenever you want and if you can't think of anything to write about they have prompts you can look through for inspiration. You can join multiple types of group sessions whenever you want and set up a session with a personal therapist yourself with the times that are available.

There are a couple of things that I think could be improved. One is the video quality. It isn't great and sometimes it's hard to hear if my therapist's camera is off.

I also think it would be a lot more budget-friendly if the payment method was weekly or at least bi-weekly. Some people can afford to pay $50 in one sitting for one session, but paying $200 for 4 sessions in one sitting is a sacrifice. I ended up getting a credit card for this reason. I appreciate that it's much cheaper than office sessions, which are typically $200 for one session. I just think it would be much less of an issue if you can pay for one session, decide you don't want to use BetterHelp, and all you've spent is $40 so it doesn't feel like you wasted $200 on something you don't want to use anymore.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Variety of communication styles

Easy access to journaling and texting therapist at anytime

Easily scheduling sessions on the app

Video chat quality

Glitchy sometimes

Paying $200 in one sitting for 4 sessions instead of $50 a week for one session

Just do it

By Hailey G., Carson City, NV, Verified Reviewer

I've tried in-person therapy and hated it. I put my mental health on the back of the shelf for years and let myself sink into a place I didn't think I could get out of. I love that I can talk to y therapist every day, share journal entries about anything and everything, and the groupinars are helpful in so many ways.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons
