Best experience with therapy ever!

By Carrie Z., Santa Clarita, CA, Verified Reviewer

I have had more therapists than I can count over the years. None of which compare to the therapist I found using this service. Plus, it’s nice to be able to have therapy in the comfort of my home. Use of this service is reasonably priced and if the therapist selected for you is not a good fit, you can request another one until you find one that meets your needs and you vibe well with.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Pros and Cons

BetterHelp worked for me...unexpectedly

By Ileana B., New Jersey, Verified Reviewer

I like digital health and trying new apps. I signed up on a whim to check how the app works, what it offers, and maybe find a therapist.

I did not sign up for the sliding scale because I didn't know what the rules were. The initial price was high and I waited to be matched with a therapist to see if it was worth it. The first therapist I was matched with was meh and canceled before we even got the chance to meet.

BetterHelp offered me a better price and I took it to test out the system, thinking that no good therapist would accept this.

I was very honest in my description of what I was looking for. I am reading a lot and I wanted someone who would know who's Brene Brown or Gretchen Rubin.

Finally, I was matched with an excellent therapist. I'm very happy, and the whole process took less than 2 weeks, at a competitive price. I would have been lucky to get here without this app, by just calling and trying out local therapists.

Everyone should try therapy, and BetterHelp is the place to try it

By Tom P., Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Verified Reviewer

Having gone through a tough period in my life, it became clear that I needed to sort some issues out with therapy. BetterHelp made the process to get started a breeze and matched me with a therapist perfectly suited to my needs. Meeting my therapist over video call made it easy to fit sessions into my busy schedule, and being able to message my therapist whenever a thought occurred to me was super helpful. I'm now at the stage where I no longer need therapy, and I'm living a happier and healthier life, and BetterHelp played a big role in getting me there.

When I was seeking therapy I knew I needed a therapist who was LGTBQ+ friendly. That was not available in the area I live, so I chose to use BetterHelp. The BetterHelp platform has so much to offer. So accessible

By Tasha T. , Indiana

Super grateful to be able to participate in this platform—the therapy format is so accessible and convenient and comfortable and adaptable to my needs. I was really nervous about speaking with a therapist for the first time. Having the option of text, phone, or video conferencing is so accessible and convenient. Also allowed me to feel less anxiety talking to a therapist for the first time. And so great to do so from the privacy of my own home.

The discount they offered for patients affected by the coronavirus epidemic was especially helpful.

Also love my therapist as it turns out. And it’s so comfortable to know that It would be possible to choose a different one if that hadn’t been the case.

Really good experience for me.

Someone to talk to from the comfort of my own home

By Lee W., Houston, TX, Verified Reviewer

I've really enjoyed my experience with BetterHelp. I use the video conference option, and it's so convenient to just log on, see my therapist, and talk things out for 45 minutes. It's not overwhelming, and doesn't take a lot of effort.

I also appreciate the journal entry feature. I've never been one to keep up with a journal, but the online journal makes it so easy to just jot down a few ideas or really work something through in detail. There's also an option to share the journal entry with my therapist, which I've done a number of times now.

BetterHelp is the best investment in myself

By Guillermo M., San Antonio, TX, Verified Reviewer

I have never done therapy before, and BetterHelp was a wonderful intro to the program. They work well by pairing me with a therapist with whom I can relate and feel like I'm restoring myself to who I once was. BetterHelp played a role in that for me.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Finding a therapist that works for me and having the access and ability to change out therapist in case it's not a great fit.

The financial assistance program is great help as well, especially with the going price.

The out source programming to help me on my journey with journal prompts, worksheets, and webinars or group work.

The platform band with can be an issue sometimes especially when your on a time session.

The groupinars are amazing but I wish they were more sessions in the evenings.

Love that I can be home but would like better communication about billing and giving better notices about my account.

By Sarah B., Sonoma, CA, Verified Reviewer

I’m loving BetterHelp but there are a few things that bother me.

I didn’t feel like I got any notice about my bill and when I went to go meet my therapist I couldn’t. I didn’t have enough funds in my account to pay as I was getting paid the following day. When I went to log in to meet with my therapist that I scheduled it wouldn’t let me.

At first, I thought she wasn’t showing up but that was so unlikely of her to do. As I was typing her to ask if everything was okay she messaged me asking me if I were okay and she was waiting for me. I tried sending her a message that I couldn’t get in and that I was trying to figure it out but it wouldn’t let me. I then was stressing out that one, I left her high and dry and couldn’t even tell her what was going on. And two, it was very unsettling to me that I couldn’t reach out to her myself. BetterHelp did ask if they could message her for me saying that my account was not available and honestly I don’t even know what they messaged her but I do know it didn’t come from me and I was left feeling awful about so many things.

Then a few days went by and I just went to go see my BetterHelp account and all of a sudden I was back on. No message, no nothing letting me know my account had been charged again. No message saying I was back in business, nothing. Just saw the money went through and I was able to message again.

The next meeting that I had with my therapist was about me saying how sorry I was for leaving her high and dry like that. I also told her how stressed it made me feel not being able to let her know what was going on. And I really had no clue that was happening. For someone that is very highly sensitive and doesn’t like disappointing people. This can create even more stress that they (I) don’t need.

I didn’t get a notice that I would be getting charged soon. No notice that I didn’t have the funds, nothing. I had to go to my scheduled meeting to find that out. Then not to be able to do that on top of feeling awful and not having the opportunity to say sorry or whatever, that was lame. It was also lame that once I did have the funds in my account, BetterHelp didn’t notify me that they charged my account and that I was able to message and continue sessions with my therapist again. I’m just glad I remembered to go and check a few days later to find out I was back in action.

Everything else has been great. I love my therapist and I love being able to do this all from home and when I can, but the billing part and notifying customers of their accounts could use improvements from what I’ve experienced. It made me stress even more and I didn’t like having that feeling and then to have to explain myself to my therapist about that, it totally sucked and I hated how it made me feel. She totally understood but also didn’t really know much either about all that. She just got one message saying I wasn’t able to pay my funds or something like that. I know it wasn’t much that they told her. I mean she couldn’t even message me so then she’s wondering if I’m okay. If I were doing her job that would be really hard just getting cut off from your client when you’re trying to help them with whatever issues they are going through. I could be wrong about all this but for me I know I would be very concerned if my client was okay.

Thank you for reading this and I hope you can come up with a better solution as I don’t know exactly what that would look like but just maybe better communication about billing and such. Just a thought. Maybe give notice to the person when their account is getting close to being charged and maybe in red bold print bc the tiny print isn’t doing much and I had no clue that my account was going to be charged soon and no clue that I was back on and my charge did go through. Throw me a bone or something cause I didn’t get anything. Thank you and please think about this and consider making the billing information a little more clear to the patients and therapist.

I'm so grateful to have this service

By Lucy Y., Somerset, United Kingdom, Verified Reviewer

It's played a key role in improving my mental health. I am very grateful for my therapist, and the service. I appreciated having different ways of communication which made the service more accessible.

I would like more flexibility in the price and level of service offered or the ability to accumulate a session to have at another time.

I would like there to be different levels of access to the services at different prices. I understand it is difficult balancing understanding the worth of your service with providing something that is accessible. I think this is why having layers of membership would be beneficial. You could just have journal suggestions and reminders, could have a "positive support" role where your therapist would respond to a message once a week, or a live session twice monthly or once monthly. I feel like I'm struggling to still justify it because I've been on SSP and worrying financially but feeling like I still would like some support from them, but for it to be faded out and then increased again through harder times.

I've missed booking two weekly sessions since I've been and I won't have access to those again. If there can't be levels of membership, then there could be a middle ground of you can accumulate and use them at a different time. I appreciate that both of these solutions have more issues around planning diaries and staffing levels.

As I'm brainstorming, you could have limits on rebooking, so you can rebook but it's more restricted timing, based on availability and priority given to everyone having one session a week or offer a different therapist for a one-off session with a specific incident/topic in mind. The key is for the service to be more flexible.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

My therapist, Sujarda, was well suited to me

I could talk to Sujarda by different methods and was easier to access and make the best use of the service this way

BetterHelp has helped me in enormous ways

I was struggling, going through a pretty bad patch when I signed up for BetterHelp. I've learned a handful of helpful skills that have improved my day-to-day life, ever since I started using this platform I've implemented many good habits.

I've started getting a hold of my social life again, going out with friends more, learning how to better handle social anxiety. And general struggles that we all go through.

Anchor of support

By Niamh O., London, United Kindom, Verified Reviewer

I've used two therapists at different times on BetterHelp. Once during family conflict and the deterioration of my mother's life and again after returning home and picking up the pieces after she died. I tried 2 different therapists to explore different gender perspectives and for different needs. At first, I thought it was too much of an indulgence as funds were tight but somehow I managed. I find the site super easy to navigate with useful groupinars that are included but mostly because I feel seen and heard by someone dedicated just to my experience with no misguided or unsolicited advice or conditioning. I really enjoy it.

Skeptical at first, but glad I tried it!

By Jay S., Florida, Verified Reviewer

When I started BetterHelp, I was very skeptical about using online counseling. I have sought counseling before but it has always been in person and expensive. A friend recommended me to BetterHelp and I was pleasantly surprised by the pricing and the process to match with a counselor. I scheduled my first video session and it went very well and have another this coming week. I also like the online journal – I complete an entry each night before bed and it helps to keep myself connected to the goals that my counselor and I have identified.

Overall, it's an easy process to get started, not as expensive as going to in-person counseling, very convenient times to schedule sessions, and I am impressed with my counselor. She's been great and very easy to talk to about my concerns.

I am still relatively new at it, but so far I have been impressed with the service.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Variety of methods to talk to a counselor — video and text

Not a large selection of diverse counselors

Best online therapy out there

By Joan N., Thomasville, GA, Verified Reviewer

I love BetterHelp. I used to be with Talkspace, and you were only able to speak with your therapist once a month live while the rest of the month is audio. With Talkspace, however, you can see a therapist once a week live, have audio messages in the chat room, be provided with daily journal prompts, and there are weekly educational webinars. The support team is expedient with your concerns and provides financial aid to make it more affordable, a great resource to help individuals who really need therapy. My therapist is awesome. I am glad I have BetterHelp as a platform.

Worth every penny — made me believe in therapy again.

By Megan G., Sanford, NC, Verified Reviewer

After years of super unhelpful, hurtful even, therapy while I was in the military, I decided to give BetterHelp a shot. I was matched immediately with a therapist who was amazing and exactly what I needed. Then, I met a new therapist after my previous one got a promotion and she is just as amazing. I feel like I am able to take control of my life again.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Therapy that matters and is actually relevant

Video sessions from anywhere with my busy schedule

Chat feature whenever you need correspondence

Price — I would have started therapy a lot sooner if the price was a bit more affordable, however, it is leaps and bounds more affordable than traditional therapy

Not being able to see availability before cancelling an appointment — it’s a gamble to reschedule since you don’t know if your therapist is booked up
