    American Home Shield

    Really negative 20 stars

    • Length of Use: 3–6 months
    Overall Experience:

This company is a scam! I have been paying $40 a month thinking I had coverage for the water heater. The water heater stops working, I put in a service request and paid 100 bucks. They send out a plumber who tells me my 7-year-old tankless water heater is not up to code and it needs " modifications". AHS contract says the water heater and all components are covered, however, limitations to coverage include modifications. How convenient.

I called for a second opinion only to be told I would have to pay another 100 bucks. I try to get my own estimate and send it to them, they say you need pre-approval, girl puts me on hold for a few minutes, comes back and says it is not approved, for no reason, and if I wanted a second opinion I need to pay again.

I ask to speak to a Supervisor, she says they are all on calls right now and someone will call me back in 24 hours (ok, then who did you just speak to that denied my request for a second opinion?).

24 hours later still no call from the Supervisor, called back, spoke to the same girl who sounded startled that I called back, claimed a Supervisor would be with me shortly, then proceeded to leave me on hold indefinitely.

Now I want to cancel the policy, I call back and get transferred to 5 different people in the Philippines!

I finally talk to the cancellation team, save me the upsell, I just want to cancel. She tries to tell me it's better if I let my policy expire because they will have to charge me a cancellation fee. My policy doesn't expire for another 8 months at 40 bucks a month. After repeatedly asking this woman to stop talking and just cancel it, she tells me the cancellation fee is $32.50.

How on earth was it better for me to wait until my policy expired to avoid paying $32.50?

I am out of pocket 300 bucks total and still with a broken water heater.

    Don't do it!
