Great experience!

By Leah G., Oceano, CA, Verified Reviewer

I have been using BetterHelp for about a month now. My therapist is lovely, she is very patient, great listener, and gives great advice. It's refreshing to be able to talk things out with someone who is not connected with my life such as my husband, parent, or friend. I can share freely and get objective, educated responses.

I became a client with BetterHelp about one month ago, and to my surprise, it has been better than I anticipated. I found BetterHelp and I was in need of counseling so I decided to give it a try. This company is great! My counselor and the people who have reached out in emails are all so wonderful, they are so professional, engaging, and they really care. I feel like I found a perfect fit and since joining I feel so much better and hopeful. I am so grateful to this company. I would highly recommend BetterHelp.com to anyone.

Alexandria G

Alex is extremely helpful, and in comparison to in-person therapy with an LPC, I feel she may be better for me as I’m able to be more honest, which yields much more understanding. She connects.

Excellent service tailored to my needs

By Darrell J., Quebec, Canada, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp therapists really helped me when I needed an expert to talk to and gain some guidance from. Over the course of 3 or 4 years I've had 3 counselors from BetterHelp and they have all been great and exactly what I needed at the time. I had never sought out a therapist before, so BetterHelp was my first experience and I am highly satisfied.

The therapists really know what they are doing and quickly get the conversation to where it's helpful. Expert, gentle, nonjudgmental, and welcoming are some words I'd use to describe my therapists. They quickly adapt to where you are in life at the moment. It's like having a therapist and a coach in one person, dedicated to you for some time each week. I can't recommend BetterHelp enough, and with the various payment plans you can try it for a few weeks with no risk and then switch to a longer-term plan which makes the costs very affordable.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Registered for a couples therapy, and was assigned to a doctor for individual therapy

By Tony S., San Diego, CA, Verified Reviewer

When I was signing up for BetterHelp - the first very question was reflected in two buttons: "I am seeking Individual Therapy" or "I am seeking Couple’s Therapy". I chose "Couple's Therapy".

After I was assigned with a therapist after TWO WEEKS - I scheduled a session with her, and I assumed I will start the first session on my own, and then my wife would join on a second session.

The first session went well, but when I asked the doctor as for how do we proceed since the goal was a therapy for me and my wife as a unit, she was surprised to even hear that I’m requesting a therapy for a couple, and told me that BetterHelp assigned me as a patient to her for individual therapy, and that she will cordially agree to see me and my wife just one time as a "favor".

When I contacted support about it - they told me to register at their sister site Regain Us, which turns out to be 3 times more expensive.

I wrote support that I’d like to continue therapy at the BetterHelp site, not their sister site, to what I signed up for - a couple’s therapy, and now I’m waiting for a response from support.

Also, BetterHelp has terrible regulations about the length of a session.

Supposedly, they advertise that you get weekly hour-long sessions which makes sense for me pricing wise, because $360 for 3 months was supposed to buy me 1 session a week for $30, which is the same as what I would pay for therapy through my Health Insurance (Aetna) for a copayment for each session.

However, when I did a session with a doctor, and it was an hour long, then when the whole question arose about a couples therapy and seeing me and my wife for a next session, and I also brought up a length of session - Dr. Garceau got snarky and irritated writing that it is "up to her schedule to extend a session to one hour or not" and that she has a feeling "I will never be content."

In which universe do you pay one price, and you get twice longer, or twice shorter amount of service?

This is a very awkward policy, and doesn’t make sense. And how is this ok for a therapist to say to her patient that she has a feeling that I will never be content? That’s an awful thing to say to someone.

I might just stick to a therapist through my health insurance. Thanks, BetterHelp, for your poor customer service and poor regulations for turning me off from your platform!

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Poor policy about length of a session

Joining BetterHelp was the best decision of my life

By Kevin W., Atlanta, GA, Verified Reviewer

My life and work life are so hectic with ever-changing hours that the app-based chatting and the flexible times for video or voice calls fit my life perfectly. Also, the ability for you to "message" anytime so you're not forced to wait until your next session I find to be super helpful and beneficial. It allows you to intervene with what's truly going on rather than letting it take the back burner until your next appointment. Ultimately, the app-based approach allows for me personally to make time easily for bettering my mental health than it normally would.

But most importantly, the atmosphere that comes with BetterHelp is so comfortable and feels so safe. And because of that, I feel like I have grown so much already. I never had this much progress nor have I felt so welcome with therapy before. I could not recommend BetterHelp enough.

BetterHelp exceeded my expectations!

By Cindy B., Kansas City, MO, Verified Reviewer

I have never tried online therapy before. However, the state of the world forced my hand. As did my issues. I was impressed that BetterHelp had a thorough list of questions it asked me in order to find a therapist that would work best for me. It assigned me an amazing therapist. I have been in therapy off and on for years. This was my first time in online therapy. I was shocked that the best therapist of my life was through online therapy, BetterHelp! My therapist helped me make strides from the very first session! In addition, the staff at BetterHelp has wonderful customer service. They followed up with me after I had began my sessions with my therapist, making sure it was a good fit. I didn't get an automated message. It was an actual person asking how things were going. I responded and got a very personalized response back. I have been impressed by BetterHelp every single step of the way.

My suggestions? Answer their intake questions very honestly. Be very upfront with the therapist they assign you so that you can determine quickly if you two are a great fit. Sometimes, just like with in-person therapy, the magic doesn't happen. If it doesn't happen for you, let them know and they will find you a new therapist. Personally? I'm not sure I'll ever go back to conventional therapy again. I love my online therapist too much. She has helped me so much. And the customer service from BetterHelp has exceeded my expectations.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

They ask several questions to make sure they match you with the right therapist.

They offer financial aid to those that qualify, this was huge for when I did need it.

Personalized follow-up from a real person after my therapy had began just to make sure things were working out, this was so nice!

Online therapy

By Annie H., Colorado, Verified Reviewer

When I read about BetterHelp I wondered if online therapy would be effective. I’ve had face-to-face counseling in the past and it was good but I had scheduling issues and sometimes it’s hard for me to make eye contact. I have really enjoyed being able to write and review my messages at any time of day. I appreciate the fact that I can also reread what my counselor wrote. Overall, I feel that BetterHelp has been a great venue and I would highly recommend it.

I was a sceptic and untrusting

By Tegan G., Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, Verified Reviewer

I wanted the app to work because I felt like I needed to talk to someone. I didn’t have high expectations but I did have hope. So I trusted their process and I am personally really happy with the results so far. I like the journal option, I like the text message option, and the live sessions feel like a good honest connection to a real human. I was in psychotherapy for years and I enjoyed being in an office with my therapist and so I wanted that same feeling, I feel that this is close if not better...in some ways. Like you really say what you need to because you will not bump into this person at the store. So far I am really happy and thankful.
