Summary
BetterHelp is an online counseling platform that will pair you with a professionally licensed counselor. Access to counseling can be scheduled at any time, anywhere, and through any smart device. The efficacy of BetterHelp is linked to provider skill and intervention protocols, but there are some drawbacks if you fall into certain categories of needs and it’s not covered by your insurance provider.

I have been speaking to a counselor at BetterHelp for a few weeks now. I have found it incredibly helpful already. It gives me something to look forward to. My counselor has been really professional, empathetic, and just what I need. Plus, it's pretty cheap. I'm very glad I signed up.

Excellent experience. I’ll be here for a long time. The matching tool is amazing. I love my matched therapist. And it’s way more affordable. I’m not a fan of driving so this platform works amazing for me and keeps me going instead of getting anxious and canceling as I have done in the past.

Signed up to online counseling because I don’t want to drive to a counselor, I also feel I’d struggle to be completely open if it was face-to-face. So being on the phone helps a lot. I thought I’d cry every session but my counselor taught me techniques so I don’t and I can have a conversation. If I don’t schedule he checks up on me, lets me know I can also text and have more sessions in one week if I need to. I really love that I can go on the app and shoot a message if it's immediate or schedule a session for tomorrow. Or cancel a session. It's just so easy to do everything over the phone.

I decided to utilize BetterHelp amidst COVID and after the passing of my Mother. I wanted to participate in grief counseling but resources were obviously limited. I have been exceptionally pleased with my BetterHelp experience. The platform has been really easy to use, there are an abundance of tools and resources at my disposal and my therapist has been amazing. If you are considering it, do it. You will not be disappointed.

I was in a pretty low place and I started BetterHelp for someone to talk to. I'm still dealing with some issues, but I was able to get some things off my chest that were really eating away at me. My psychologist, Dr. Oleshansky, listened to me and was able to allow me to see things in a different perspective, which in turn released some of my burden. I was given helpful worksheets and a gratitude journal to write in. I'm not there yet, but I definitely feel BetterHelp was a good choice for me.

Now that we’re forced to sit with ourselves and our issues without the normal distraction that is no longer available, many people realize they need and want help to become better people and deal with reoccurring mental or emotional issues. BetterHelp is the ideal answer to these concerns. It could not be easier or more convenient to get a personal coach or therapist right into your home. Like a private confidante but with the goal of help getting through this time and coming out more alive, more secure as people than before.

I sought counseling through BetterHelp to deal with anxiety issues. The services provided by BetterHelp make scheduling sessions extremely convenient and everything can be done at home. It was also extremely affordable. The easy accessibility was especially important for me since I live in a small town and seeking mental health treatment can be difficult. My counselor was very professional and helpful. I learned a lot of new skills for dealing with anxiety and felt very supported.

I really enjoyed BetterHelp. It allows you to contact your counselor at any time of the day and you can choose either video chat, phone calls, or instant chats with your counselor. My only con about it is the fact that they do not allow you to use health insurance and it’s just too pricey for me at this time. However, if you can afford the $180/month or $65/week, I highly recommend.

When I read about BetterHelp I wondered if online therapy would be effective. I’ve had face-to-face counseling in the past and it was good but I had scheduling issues and sometimes it’s hard for me to make eye contact. I have really enjoyed being able to write and review my messages at any time of day. I appreciate the fact that I can also reread what my counselor wrote. Overall, I feel that BetterHelp has been a great venue and I would highly recommend it.

I have never tried online therapy before. However, the state of the world forced my hand. As did my issues. I was impressed that BetterHelp had a thorough list of questions it asked me in order to find a therapist that would work best for me. It assigned me an amazing therapist. I have been in therapy off and on for years. This was my first time in online therapy. I was shocked that the best therapist of my life was through online therapy, BetterHelp! My therapist helped me make strides from the very first session! In addition, the staff at BetterHelp has wonderful customer service. They followed up with me after I had began my sessions with my therapist, making sure it was a good fit. I didn't get an automated message. It was an actual person asking how things were going. I responded and got a very personalized response back. I have been impressed by BetterHelp every single step of the way.
My suggestions? Answer their intake questions very honestly. Be very upfront with the therapist they assign you so that you can determine quickly if you two are a great fit. Sometimes, just like with in-person therapy, the magic doesn't happen. If it doesn't happen for you, let them know and they will find you a new therapist. Personally? I'm not sure I'll ever go back to conventional therapy again. I love my online therapist too much. She has helped me so much. And the customer service from BetterHelp has exceeded my expectations.
Length of Use: 3–6 months
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Pros and Cons
They ask several questions to make sure they match you with the right therapist.
They offer financial aid to those that qualify, this was huge for when I did need it.
Personalized follow-up from a real person after my therapy had began just to make sure things were working out, this was so nice!

We are a family of 4 who were at the end of our rope. We struggle with our communication. Everyone was a little skeptical about how beneficial getting counseling online would be, however, after being matched up with our very experienced, kind, warm family counselor - we couldn't be happier. BetterHelp is user-friendly and the reminders are helpful and appreciated. We've found that we save time and feel more at ease by being at home instead of having to drive to an office and get acclimated to the surroundings. This is turning out to be one of the best decisions that we made in seeking counseling and we have hope that our family bond will continue to improve and be strengthened with the guidance and help from our counselor.

I heard about BetterHelp on the Mental Health Happy Hour Podcast. I thought about trying it for a long while before I did. Initially I did not get assigned a therapist that fit my goals, which was disappointing, so I refused that therapist and thought I'd give it one more try - and this time, after a few days, a therapist who fit all my needs appeared. So far, the work has been going well. I love being able to write every day if I want and getting a response within 24 hours. I'm used to the traditional once a week live session, so being able to do written plus video or audio is pretty interesting. Like writing a journal and having a therapist respond to the entries. Fascinating. It's nice that it's all contained in one platform - feels very organized and safe.
Length of Use: Less than 3 months
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Pros and Cons
Various ways to be in touch with therapist
Getting notifications that my therapist has responded
The organization of everything being in one place
Got initially hooked up with a therapist that did not meet my needs

I’ve tried therapy before BetterHelp and it never felt right. When the day would come for my appointments I couldn’t think of anything to say to them. Now, my therapist is a message away. We can work threw things 24/7 and on my time in my own home where I feel safest. I know, typical millennial, everything is on the internet or in an app. But really, it’s helped me so much and I’m only on two weeks.
Length of Use: Less than 3 months
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Pros and Cons
Able to talk to a licensed therapist from my own home

I was matched with a therapist who fits my way of dealing and processing things. She understood my desire for help and aide almost immediately and is very easy to speak with. She tailors her approach to my strengths and challenges me on my weaknesses without casting judgment or blame.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Pros and Cons
Not having to "doctor shop". The matching algorithm has worked out very well.
Availability. I can set my own schedule for interactions.
Knowledge and demeanor. Dr. Herrin is incredibly good at what she does and made feel instantly at ease.
Video quality is sometimes less than stellar. I work from home and have an excellent connection for work purposes.
