Great service for the cost

BetterHelp is really better help.

By Hope M., Austin, TX, Verified Reviewer

I had a death in the family and a 10-year relationship destroyed in a matter of months. It's obvious to say, I wasn't doing very well. So I started therapy and everything has changed. After working with my therapist and putting some major effort into my own mind, I've never felt better.

So far maybe

By Brianna J. , Orlando, FL

I haven't been on here long, it took 2 counselors to see me and I'm still trying, take the time to read for yourself. They give odd options but it slightly narrows it down to a good one. They could have more options for counselors regarding patients.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

I actually get a real person

They keep notes and retain what I'm saying

I cry and not feel like a bother

You can find the right counselor for you

By T B. , Illinois

The very first counselor I chose worked well for me. I usually don’t do reviews but I feel like this worked for me, so why not take the time to write on something good that could help someone make a decision to get the help they need.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Great resource!

By John R., Wahpeton, ND, Verified Reviewer

I've been with BetterHelp for a few years now. At the beginning, the therapist I first got wasn't a good match for me so they helped me find someone who was so perfect for me. In the time I've been with BetterHelp, I've come so far and my therapist has been so accommodating with my schedule to make sure she has time for me and I was able to continue counseling and resolve so many issues I had about myself and my life that I was so frustrated and negative about.

I've come from a person who hated themselves to something with a much more positive outlook about life and myself. It's so much better than any in-person/office counseling I've done, and so much easier to afford too.

I'm so glad I found BetterHelp and my counselor...truly.

Length of Use: 2+ years

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

It's affordable.

You can find a counselor who fits you.

It's so convenient.

Only con, and not their fault, is its harder if internet speed is slow.

I’m so happy I chose to start counseling and BetterHelp made it possible! I don’t have to go to an office or awkwardly sit in a waiting room. I don’t have to make time for the “extras” like a drive. I can go for a walk or sit in a quiet space wherever I am. I love it!

Benefits of technology

By Brianna C. , Madison, WI

BetterHelp has given me the opportunity to get help from a highly qualified person in the comfort of my own home. This gives me the privilege of being able to tackle possibly uncomfortable subjects in an already established safe physical space. My counselor simply fosters that sense of safety by providing a judgment-free zone.

BetterHelp is just better in general

By Katelyn B., Illinois, Verified Reviewer

I had tried to go to a selection of random people I found through my insurance and they just did not click. The counselor I found through BetterHelp is a great match for my needs and I feel like I have made more progress in my first month with BetterHelp than the multiple months going to random insurance counselors.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

My therapist Natasha

By Nikki L., Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, Verified Reviewer

If you want an online or in-person therapist who does not take the time to listen or read before responding and is dismissive immediately if you voice any concerns about feeling unheard, then this is the therapist for you.

I found her rude, dismissive, and I have never felt so unheard by a therapist before.

I only changed therapists because I moved and had a lower income and I feel like she waited long times to reply and wouldn’t ask questions that related well to what you had said before.

In fact, it was the opposite.

I don’t write reviews often but needed to because my experience was so bad.

Overall with her style of online therapy, you would pay less and get more out of seeing an expensive therapist in person.

This app is a great idea and I am happy they have platforms like this but therapists like Natasha are what will give them a bad name.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Online and you can message

Should be quick responses

Had a bad experience

Can do over the phone and text, which she does not do and she is slow to reply

You end up paying more money than you expect for less time

Better than I imagined

By Jay E., Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Verified Reviewer

I was skeptical about these large online counseling websites, so I didn't expect much going in. How good could it be, when it's ½-price (or less) of in-person therapy? And would their counselors be any good when it's this cheap? Just as I imagined, my paired counselor was not a good fit. But, the system makes it easy to get re-matched again with a different person, and since then it's been great. My counselor has 20 years of experience, she's attentive, and gives me a lot of time. The quality of service has been very similar to in-person therapy. So, finally, I highly recommend this website, it's been a real blessing.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Experienced counselors

Easy to try different counselors until you find the right one

So affordable

Session length is only 30 minutes (but, there's ways to extend it)

Some counselors don't give you much attention (but then you can just switch to another who does!)

I’m new to BetterHelp, but so far my therapist seems to be a really good match. I like that I can send her a message when I’m having a difficult moment or situation that I need to talk about, so I’m not ruminating on it in my head and letting it ruin my mood.

By Joshua H., Johnson City, TN, Verified Reviewer

I have greatly appreciated BetterHelp's platform and the ability to connect with my counselor, even while navigating life through the pandemic.

I have connected with a great counselor, value the ability to communicate through written correspondence as well as audio/video conferencing for sessions, and the flexibility to meet with my phone or computer has greatly helped me fit and balance time for counseling while keeping up with life's demands.

If you put in the work

By Cristina S., Jupiter, FL, Verified Reviewer

This app has three main resources:

1.) Once a week sessions with your own personal therapist.

2.) 7 days a week access to therapist via texting.

3.) Webinars that address a multitude of mental health topics.

The fact that I'm paying for all this reminds me to invest in myself and actually journal and research to process and evaluate what I am going through thoroughly. Comparable alternative to traditional in-person therapy.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Amazing counseling on the phone

By Rachel F., Dorchester, NJ, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp is excellent at matching patients to counselors based on unique needs. They provide a very convenient way of communicating with counselors. This allows a person to get the help they need from the comfort of their own home. You can set a weekly session and choose between texting, video chats, and audio conversations. My counselor has provided so much motivation and insight to me over the last year and a half. She is a blessing to me because I feel like she really knows me. She is also available all throughout the week for texting and responds in a timely manner. I am so thankful for BetterHelp and how they have motivated me to feel more positive, encouraged me to face fears, and cope with change. I would recommend BetterHelp for anyone. Everyone could use some uplifting, guiding, and positivity/support.

Length of Use: 1–2 years

Just go for it

By Kevin P., Texas, Verified Reviewer

Not going to lie, I was hesitant at first and I looked in a dozen different places before I settled for BetterHelp. Not one of the places I looked said that it will match me to a counselor and that made me look a little more into it. And sure enough, after a brief questionnaire, I was matched to a counselor that was experienced in what I was going thru and to what I wanted to get out of this. She has been great and I feel like this is working. If it can work for me it can work for you. Don't give in, just do it and get the help that BetterHelp can give.

For any personal issues

By Jannetje V., Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Verified Reviewer

Online is a great way to feel that your privacy is protected allowing a person to really open up about themselves. I found this the most comfortable, so it gave me the ability to say all I needed to get out, this in itself is helpful and life-changing, as well as a lasting tool to use on my own, but the counselors are top of the line and their credentials gave me the confidence to know they were the right fit for me, as well as their advice has had the outcomes I was looking for.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

The level of privacy I can choose

That they match you with a counselor that meets your personal needs

They give advice that has more than just their personal perspectives, articles, and websites with additional information

Costs, even though it was worth it, I can't afford long term counseling

I will always have concern for personal information on the world wide web...but they insured privacy

The counselor is not always in your country so some of the issues are as hard for them to help with as they are to explain to them

Life changing

By Keirra R., Modesto, CA, Verified Reviewer

I was unsure about BetterHelp at first. But signing up was easy. I was perfectly matched with a counselor based off my preferences in less than 8 hours. In 2 weeks my anxiety went from a 10 down to a 3. I can’t write to my counselor any time day or night when things pop in my head. One live session a week. So many wonderful groupinars on so many relatable topics. Optional journaling. All at my fingertips. I am more open with my BetterHelp counselor than any in-person counseling I have ever tried. I feel respected and heard. For the first time in a long time, I have HOPE again!

By Maya S., Pennsauken, NJ, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp has made therapy accessible, affordable, and rewarding for me. Being virtual and within a price point I can manage is so helpful to me. Being a first-year teacher in a global pandemic can really suck sometimes! But my experience has been really helpful.

Length of Use: 6–12 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Virtual therapy

Therapist matching process considered things like faith, sexual orientation, and gender identity, and other very crucial things

Affordable and I don’t have to worry about insurance

Not very many payment tiers (can’t only pay per session, can’t pay exclusively for chat feature, etc.)

Convenient!

By Hannah B., Sierra Vista, AZ, Verified Reviewer

I am a working mom with a 2-year-old. I also struggle with depression, anxiety, PTSD, and ADHD thanks to some trauma from my past. I was really struggling and it reached a breaking point where I realized I can't do this anymore. In my current state, I cannot be a good example for my toddler, I'm not a good partner to my husband, and I'm really not being good to myself. However, trying to find time to go to a traditional brick and mortar therapist's office was almost impossible between work and mom life, not to mention the fact that good counselors are pretty non-existent where I live. BetterHelp has counselors that do weekend and evening hours, as well as a way to message them at any point during the day. There has been more than one occasion where I was having a really rough time, yet my video session wasn't for a few more days, and I was able to text my therapist through the BetterHelp app. Sometimes just being able to vent it out was all I needed.

My therapist might not have gotten back to me immediately, but I knew she would by the end of the day. It really is the best thing to happen to me. It does cost a little bit more because it does not go through insurance, but it kind of goes on a sliding scale and there are opportunities to apply for financial aid. Plus you get more bang for your buck. With traditional in-person therapy, you usually get someone that you see once every 1-2 weeks, and that's it. With Better BetterHelp you have someone that you chat with every 1-2 weeks that you can also message in between sessions with any concerns you may have. I never feel like my therapist is too busy for me. It really is the best thing that ever happened to me.
