Amazing rapport with the therapist

By Barbara S., Summerfield, NC, Verified Reviewer

I had an unusual experience of becoming a widow due to COVID-19 back in 2021. I explained what my issues were and was paired up with an amazing therapist whom 1) was close to me in age and 2) had undergone a very similar experience, so her advice was timely and relevant.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Age and experience of my therapist

Her advice and exercises I was assigned

Her ability to hear about my concerns

Back on track

By Jessa S., Ohio, Verified Reviewer

I have been dealing with mental health issues since I was a child, but in unhealthy ways. Now that I am a mother and pushing 30, though, these issues have become much more unbearable. I have received a lot of help from medical professionals in my area, but due to me having small children and little to no child care, going to the therapies and classes was massively difficult; not to mention, most of the practices say that my level of care is too “acute” since I had an attempt.

BetterHelp has given me the chance to work with someone who ran the same type of programs I can no longer attend. I appreciate that I can be home with my kids and still work on myself. It helped put me back on track to building healthy habits. Also, my therapist is very responsive and actually reads through my journal entries. She proactively checks up on me and takes no offense if I don’t respond.

I still believe that there are some services that BetterHelp simply cannot provide (as the website itself states); however, it is life-changing to be deep in the weeds of anxiety or depression, and someone comes to sit with you, instead of needing you to meet them on their terms.

Thank you BetterHelp!

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

No need for child care

Meet every week

Have unlimited group therapies and classes included in your fee

Financial aid

The group therapies are much more strict about children (understandably) and are 90 minutes long

Cannot be diagnosed with or prescribed anything through the service

Not a lot of music and art therapies available

Find the perfect therapist

By Katelyn M., Felton, DE, Verified Reviewer

Overall, I rate BetterHelp a 3/5. It would be 5/5 if I had met my most recent therapist first. She is AMAZING — friendly, attentive, and she asks questions that help me understand my feelings. The first therapist I found, was judgmental, it felt like she wasn’t listening to me, and it was just an awkward experience.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Easy to use

Quick help

Pick your therapist

You can only message when it’s an appointment time

Pricing was a little high for what you get

More therapist options would be nice

Great experience...and I live in another country and culture

By Dientje M., Curacao, Verified Reviewer

I live in the Caribbean on a dutch island, so I came in skeptical as to if online therapy would be helpful to me. I was happily surprised by the entire experience. I had a great experience with the therapist that was assigned to me. Never felt more heard and understood, and the tools and advice were absolute gold. The accessibility to my therapist was impressive. And I also made use of the online workshops. All in all, I have recommended this to friends and recommend it to anyone, even when living in a different country that's not the US.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Love BH but concerned about quality of therapists

By B K., Connecticut, Verified Reviewer

I've had several therapists here. One for 2 years. We never really got to talk about my family like I had requested numerous times so I changed and have been shopping around since.

I notice an alarming trend to brush aside issues as if they will go away. I'm not sure why they don't have experience with trauma or abandonment and it seems to be more like a friendly phone call than real in-person therapy.

Otherwise, the app and BH are great! It's there when you need it and everyone is nice enough.

Length of Use: 2+ years

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Ease of scheduling

Phone therapy

Shopping around easily for a good fit

Lack of in-depth therapy

You have to ask for a therapist directory or they will match you automatically

Timely life-changing support

By Tia A., London, England, Verified Reviewer

Finding the right kind and the right way to experience therapy is not always easy. By offering the option to select a practitioner that meets your needs and by letting you choose a channel you're comfortable with (phone, chat or video), BetterHelp soars above other providers offering similar support. With the added bonus of group sessions focused on essential topics.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Selecting a suitable therapist who could be abroad

Being able to select phone instead of video

Financial aid

Group sessions

BetterHelp

By S C., Camby, IN, Verified Reviewer

Honestly, it's an ongoing experience. As long as my HSA holds up, I'm never leaving. I've never been for therapy, meds, etc. But I went to BetterHelp after an in-person was icky. First was ok, then we disagreed and I found Mary. Literally 4729769 out of 10.

Length of Use: 6–12 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Easy to change therapists.

They constantly ask for feedback.

The additional options in the menus.

Notification options.

Logo needs fire.

Still going strong with BetterHelp 2 years later

By Yussif H., London, United Kindom, Verified Reviewer

I was fortunate to be paired with a very experienced therapist who has been wonderful for me, but this was actually the second therapist that I was paired with. That's a testament to how easy it was to switch on BetterHelp.

Two years later, having demonstrably grown over that time (and continuing the work), I am very grateful for Dr Jordan's wisdom and insight, and I consider him an important cornerstone of my support system.

I even took a break from the service for a few months last year (unwisely, I would like to add) and noticed the adverse effects of reverting to old habits and missing the support of a professional therapist. Conversely, very soon after restarting my therapy, I noticed quick improvements.

Length of Use: 2+ years

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Quality of therapists

Relative affordability

Relaxed and flexible approach from BetterHelp

Ability to change therapists with no fuss

Ability to narrow down potential therapists with preferences

Did not allow me to freeze my account when I had a break

Rarely, I will not be able to secure a weekly slot due to scheduling

Professional, practical, and affordable

By Katherine G., San Luis Obispo, CA, Verified Reviewer

I’ve been using BetterHelp for 2 years now. I have to say, It has been a solid, affordable, and practical resource for me to manage my mental health. I was able to fill out a short questionnaire that matched me with a therapist. I was able to select the areas I needed counseling in and could scroll through a list of therapists and choose for myself. I have really enjoyed that option!

BetterHelp honors my privacy by allowing me to unmatch or choose another therapist if I feel like it’s not a good fit. All of them have been very professional. Currently, I am working with Ryan Zelov and my counseling with him has been professional, consistent, and most important, has yielded results in my life.

Additionally, it has been a tool to help me work through many toxic thinking patterns that were keeping me stuck for many years. It’s been a blessing to have a professional counselor available via messaging too. My therapist is available via messaging and via a live session (which I schedule when I need to). There are tons of resources on the app, which I have gotten LOTS of use out of while at work. If I am struggling, I can excuse myself for a quick break and process things via a journal prompt. From there, I can choose to share the prompt with Ryan or keep it private. Additionally, he equips me with tools (like worksheets to help me identify “cognitive distortions” like over generalization and black and white thinking) that help me manage my mind and thought life.

I love BetterHelp and recommend it to everyone who wants to equip themselves with tools to manage their mental health!

Therapist in my pocket

By Shen B., Nottingham, United Kingdom, Verified Reviewer

From the moment I was matched with my therapist and got talking, I felt a sense of relief. I felt seen, heard, and understood, so I was able to build an instant connection.

Additionally, there is a ton of support from the group sessions, these are led by professionals. You can book group sessions weekly, there's a vast selection of different groups to connect with, and speak with others struggling with the same thing as you.

I feel BetterHelp is great value for money. It enables me to get the help I so desperately needed at a reasonable price, and I can add additional services or change my membership if need be.

Also, there's something very reassuring about having my therapist in my pocket.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Great experience

By Jasmine Q., Los Angeles, CA, Verified Reviewer

One of the best decisions I have made this year is to sign up for BetterHelp and work with Susan. She is extremely responsive, dedicated to her wok, and responsible. It’s only been about two months that I have been doing therapy with her and I already see improvements in my mild anxiety and depression, self-esteem, codependency, and fearful avoidant attachment style. My career, health, and personal relationships have improved. I am looking forward to completing the needed sessions with her and seeing even more improvements overall. It can be difficult to find a therapist that works well with you, hence why I am thankful to have this opportunity.
