This little light of mine

By Paul K., Houston, TX, Verified Reviewer

The normal tragic comedy of my life has been difficult for me and dragging me down. My family kept telling me that I was depressed but I was sure that I was just sad. So I finally gave in and enrolled in BetterHelp. It has turned into a different experience than I expected and I have grown so much stronger through it. I am thankful for the push that my family gave me. Live can be hard and there seems to always be another mountain to climb as soon as I work my way to the top of this one.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

When you get a good fit (chef's kiss)

By Dan R., North Jay, ME, Verified Reviewer

It took a couple of tries but once I was matched with a therapist that fits my personality and needs, it has been very very helpful.

I wish they accepted insurance. This is a huge barrier and would make all the difference for my family and me.

Length of Use: 1–2 years

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

First time therapy experience

By Kara B., Illinois, Verified Reviewer

Was wildly easy to get started. Didn't have to talk to anyone to explain my needs. Loved that as it was part of the process I was anxious about. Love that they have financial aid. Compared to traditional therapy options this was affordable on a more regular basis, which for me has been a big contribution to my progress and satisfaction from therapy.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Ease of start up

Journaling that can be shared with therapist to help share myself

Weekly sessions with option to add more

Some of the journal questions seem repetitive

Not much group session variety

Would be nice to have custom journal emoji/mood as an option

I love my therapist

By Elizabeth V., Ayer, MA, Verified Reviewer

The review is good except for the billing department. They billed me one right after another. $160 within 3 consecutive bills, it hurt my finances. But Christine is a great therapist.

Amazing app

By Francisco R., Belmont, NC, Verified Reviewer

Do it, sign in and give them a chance of listing to you, and for you a BIG AND SAFE moment to talk and be heard, be understood, be accepted. That first, now...thanks to Lowe's and other parties, I got the opportunity to try it out at 0 cost. Took me like 1 week to finally settled with a therapist (got bounced a couple of times, looked like they are getting full) and to take the first step and talk. Start with a journal and share with the therapist, if you fee like it, the journal tab is definitely for you and just you. But if you are too nervous to press "send," take your time and do later, but don't delete what you wrote down.

Blessings.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Journal system

Live chat with therapy

Live chat need update

Amount of emojis (reaction) for "this entry make you feel"

Maybe have a tab or post tab, we need a social media of BetterHelp or a big community

Great service, wish I could give 4.9

By Dawne M., Choctaw, OK, Verified Reviewer

I love BetterHelp. It is worth the cost and my therapist is awesome.

The reason I would give a 4.9 if I could. Only downfall is the due date of the monthly payment is rotating (ex. 28th one month, 25th the next, 15th the next). This can be hard on someone who only gets paid once a month.

If they had a plan where you paid once a month (like on the 1st through the 31st) it would be easier for the one-paycheck-a-monthers to pay.

I will be back on BetterHelp as soon as I can as I said it is wonderful and so is my therapist.

Length of Use: 6–12 months

Great therapy experience!

By Carly A., West Chester, PA, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp was great in getting me set up. I had a great connection with my therapist. I liked knowing BetterHelp had the option to switch if it didn't work out. The 24/7 chat feature is super nice. The only complaint is the price, but all mental health care is fairly steep. The price is worth it to have the access and quality experience.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Genuine care from therapist

Intentional match to my therapist

BetterHelp saved my life

By J C., Tennessee, Verified Reviewer

The BetterHelp platform has literally saved my life and I’m not being overdramatic about that statement. I came to BetterHelp broken, restless, needing answers, and flat-out confused. But going to an in-person therapist was hard for me since my work schedule is sporadic. I pushed it off so many times, even though BetterHelp ads were on every podcast I listen to. It took a harsh reality to hit me in face that made me think seriously about seeking help. I signed up for BetterHelp, matches up in less than 12 hours with the best person I’ve ever met, and it’s been a healing process ever since. I also enjoy the webinars available once you sign up and learn more from other therapist and customer service has been nothing but helpful. I highly recommend BetterHelp, it will change your life.

Length of Use: 6–12 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Online

Availability hours of therapist

My therapist is the best

Webinars

Sometimes the recordings of webinars do not get emailed

Price is higher then other platforms/in-person sessions

Therapy is for everyone

By Kathleen P., Boston, MA, Verified Reviewer

I am beyond grateful that this platform has given me Claudia. I’ve been with Claudia for several months now and It’s been the best first experience with therapy because of her. Therapy has been both challenging and emotional for me, and to have someone like Claudia 10/10 would highly recommend. She creates an environment where I feel comfortable expressing myself, goes beyond measures to provide me with helpful tools, very knowledgeable, honest and transparent with me, and most importantly assures me that she is here for me on both my good days and my worst days. Whether it’s the constant reminder of setting boundaries or to ALWAYS put myself first, I appreciate every single session more than she’ll ever know.

Length of Use: 6–12 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Can easily communicate with therapist

I don’t feel limited because I am able to message my therapist outside of our weekly sessions

John is great

By Dave H., Newark, DE, Verified Reviewer

My therapist John has been great. We do chat sessions and John has been a great listener and has really helped me work through a lot of things that I kept suppressed. BetterHelp site is great, easy to use, to schedule sessions, and I love the journal so I can enter my thoughts on the days I don’t meet with John.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Best therapy experience of my life!

By Stephanie J., Utah, Verified Reviewer

I am so grateful that I found the BetterHelp app and took the leap to try it. I was matched quickly with my amazing therapist, whose dedication to her job has allowed me to find renewed hope in being able to manage my trauma, grief, anxiety, and depression. The app is super user-friendly and especially makes communicating with my therapist convenient and effective. I accomplish more in my half-hour phone sessions than I ever did with traditional therapy. I truly couldn’t recommend this service more!

Mediocre service – more "tech" company than therapy

By Chel M., San Francisco, CA, Verified Reviewer

I admire what BetterHelp sets out to accomplish, but the existing model isn't effective. The premise is, you tick checkboxes of issues you'd like to focus on and they automatically match you with a provider. Unfortunately, you don't get to actually choose a therapist based on their rating – all you get is a vague description in their bio.

Unlimited sessions are nice, but ultimately, to keep costs low they tend to have high churn from underpaying therapists. Overall it's good if you just need someone to listen. It would be better if users got more choices in qualifying/interviewing/getting the correct match for a therapist instead of automatically being assigned one when you want to change.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Can schedule unlimited sessions

Easy to change therapist

More cost-effective than therapists who don't take insurance

Impersonal matching to providers

Underpaying therapists

Average to low quality therapists due to low pay

Lots of therapists leave platform due to low pay

Good for people who don't need medicine or don't have transportation.

By John L., Florida, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp is a great option for those who aren't in desperate need of medication or lack transportation. Jennifer Reed has been very helpful. If you get the right therapist, it's very convenient being able to easily reschedule appointments or just text whenever you have a moment where thoughts and/or ideas start flowing outside the appointed times.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Convenience

The option to text outside appointments

Easy to reschedule appointments

Possibly unable to obtain medication

So far so good

By Carly W., Leeds, United Kingdom, Verified Reviewer

I have been using the BetterHelp app now for a few months. I'd always preferred face-to-face counseling, but in this new COVID world and with ever-increasing prices, I decided to give it a go.

At first, it seemed like a lot of money to be parting with, as previously I was spending about £50 per session, but only having 1 or 2 sessions a month. I now pay quarterly, and I have a session a week and they work out to be about £35. This is a lot cheaper, but I'm also having many regular sessions and there are other features too. Such as group sessions, a messaging service direct to your therapist, a journaling service, etc.

The app and desktop site have both worked really well for me. I wasn't sure what the video chat was going to be like, being on the BetterHelp platform, but I've never had any issues.

So far, I've not had any issues and I am very happy with the service.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Ease of use

Price

Availability of therapist

Amount of notifications I receive

Price (although affordable for me, it's still unaffordable for many)

Are men’s feelings worth it?

By Travis E., Salina, KS, Verified Reviewer

You bet they are.

For starters, my wife’s doctor told us about BetterHelp at her last visit. Let me tell you, I used to be that guy that always said, “it is what it is,” and moved on. Well, I’m here to tell you that isn’t a good way to think, at least not always…we have feelings too, and we can’t carry the weight of the world on our shoulders. I’ve recently cried in front of other grown men, not the happy tears either. BetterHelp has been my saving grace. Not only setting me up with the best therapist for me. But helping ME SEE ME. I’m only one man, and if I can admit and seek out the help to better myself as a man, son, father, and, believe it or not, grandpa, then so can any man or woman. Thank you, BetterHelp, for seeing a "better way" towards "better help"!

Very easy and actually helpful

By Karem T., Atlanta, GA, Verified Reviewer

It’s been surprisingly good. I was hesitant to try it, but I’m glad I did. They had me fill out this survey, then asked me my preferences in general, then I was placed with a therapist that they somehow thought would make a good fit for me. Unfortunately, after some communication, I found that this particular therapist would be NOT be right for me. So I simply went into the app and requested another therapist. From here, I was able to read several therapist’s bios and I found the one that I thought would be best for me. And she’s AMAZING.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Ease of use

Being able to have a session when I’m available, as opposed to taking off work and driving to see my therapist

Accept my FSA

Getting placed with a therapist that I didn’t get to choose, but it was easy to change. Just think I should’ve been able to do that in the first place.

Highly unprofessional and wasting my time and money

By Rebecca C., Blue Ridge, GA, Verified Reviewer

This was an awful first experience.

The first session she didn’t show up. I waited 15 minutes for her to no-show. The scheduled time was 7 am and she didn’t show up but rather text me at 7:11 saying that the video session wasn’t going to happen and that she sent that message to others but waited past the last minute to me when she had days to contact me.

The second time was scheduled at 10 and I waited 15 minutes again for her to not show up. I moved my stuff around to match the scheduled time for this in return.

This is highly unprofessional. Especially given I paid for a month and 2 of the weeks were wasted.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

BetterHelp meets you where you are at

By Adaire S. , Honolulu, HI

I've been with BetterHelp since March of 2021, when I was at my most desperate, living in an oubliette of pain and unable to find any light. At the time, I was having anxiety attacks that lasted up to eleven hours at a stretch.

I felt so desperate and alone, not wanting to live but knowing I had to as a parent to my teen daughter. Due to the pandemic, finding a therapist who had availability or was open due to social distancing was nearly impossible.

BetterHelp was the perfect solution for trained and compassionate therapists who fit into my schedule and offered live appointments online. As each therapist is an individual in approach, modality, and personality, it only took two therapists to find the one that fit me like a glass slipper.

I ended up working with her for a year and a half and developed skills that would be lifelong in overcoming grief, self-sabotage, and the critical voices within.

BetterHelp offers the flexibility to meet live or share journal entries with your therapist and take short classes that address depression and anxiety.

They are the pit crew that comes to you, meets you where you are, providing you with the tools you need to adjust to life's bumps and potholes so that you can get back into the driver's seat and onto the road of recovery of self.
