    BetterHelp

    Best therapy experience I've had

    • Length of Use: 3–6 months
    Overall Experience:

I really like getting therapy through BetterHelp. It's kind of expensive, but they have financial aid that helps, and it's covered by my FSA, and that helps, too. I've been in face-to-face talk therapy multiple times, with multiple therapists and counselors, but I've had more progress working with Katie Smith (LCSW) through BetterHelp in 5 months than I have in 6 years of therapy.

I like the messaging system. I struggle to be concise, and the message-anytime format really works for when I have a big issue I need to talk out. I also struggle with talking aloud when I am really upset, so the text format helps me communicate better. Lastly, I like being able to write a message when I have an anxiety attack, just being able to talk through an attack helps, and I don't feel like I'm a burden to my therapist because I'm not calling her constantly in a panic.

I like how easy it was to sign up and be matched with someone who works well with me and who I click with. Also, the ease at which I was matched with someone who specializes in my particular issues. I struggle with finding a therapist that specializes in my issues in my area.

Regarding the cost, it's a lot more expensive than I would pay going to a face-to-face traditional therapist. BetterHelp is over double what I was paying at my previous therapist's clinic. However, I feel the cost is worth the quality of care I'm receiving.

The sessions are only 30 minutes, 1 time per week. I didn't know that going in, and it always takes a bit for me to open up in a session. Thankfully the messaging system mitigates this somewhat.

    Pros and Cons:

    • The messaging system
    • How easy it was to sign up and be matched with someone who works well with me and who I click with
    • The cost
    • The sessions are only 30 minutes 1x per week

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
