    BetterHelp

    Best bang for the buck

    • Length of Use: Less than 3 months
    Overall Experience:

Finding myself at a crossroads in life, I realized I needed help navigating my way. I talked to family, friends, even a life coach, but still felt shaky in my decision making. I think choosing a path after retirement from one's main occupation is even harder than the original occupational choice, because there is less time left to recover if you lose your way.

With a promo code from a podcast, I felt that BetterHelp was worth a shot. They advertise that if you are unsatisfied with their match for you in any way, you can just say so, and they'll find a new match. They live up to their promise. I'm still puzzled how they chose the first match, whose specialty is relationships, when relationships were not on the radar of where I most acutely need help. But the second match's resume looked more aligned with what I felt I needed, and so I began.

This second match has worked very well, in conjunction with BetterHelp's journaling feature. I've tried many times to keep a journal, and always lost interest, but BetterHelp has kept me going. You can share your journal entries with your counselor, which I do routinely. He replies quickly, often mirroring my entry back well enough that it feels as though my journal is talking back to me. Maybe that's what keeps me at it. The combination of the journal and the responsive counselor has led me to ask new questions of myself, which makes me hopeful of finding some new answers to help me navigate the intersection.

    Pros and Cons:

    • Price - makes it feel safe to try
    • The ease of trying different matches
    • The journal, and the option to share it with the counselor
    • I wish the counselor was paid to spend Monday mornings catching up on weekend entries
    • The auto matchmaker made a very puzzling match the first time
    • It doesn't tell you how the connection will be made before your first video conference

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
