    The Black Tux

    Navy blue suit nightmare

    • Length of Use: Less than 3 months
    Overall Experience:

My experience with The Black Tux started well but was a nightmare and very stressful, especially as we got close to our wedding day. I was renting a navy blue suit for my wedding. I expected a few challenges due to Covid, but that's why I started the suit rental process early for my June 20, 2021 wedding. I needed a navy blue suit for myself, my best man, and my groomsman. I was looking to schedule an appointment at the beginning of March, but the first appointment that worked with my schedule was on 4/2/2021. I went to my fitting, and the woman working with us said that we had plenty of time, recommending that we submit our order about 3-4 weeks before the event. One disappointment was that we could not try on on the suits, rather we could only try on a black tux. We didn't want to risk not getting our suits and paid for them on 4/11/2021.

We wanted navy blue suits instead of tuxedos because we had a daytime wedding, and the bridesmaids were wearing light blue dresses. My best man and I went for our fitting at the Chicago Showroom by my other groomsman who lives in North Carolina. We decided to use The Black Tux because everyone was able to visit a location to get fitted. My first issue with The Black Tux was that my groomsman in North Carolina needed wide shoes which were not available. Neither one of us could make the edits online, I tried calling and after waiting on hold for over an hour, I hung up. I then called later in the day and waited 2 hours before someone answered the phone to modify the order. It would be much more convenient to allow customers to modify parts of their order online. Everything was all set, so we could focus on everything else for the wedding, or so we thought.

I received an email on 5/24/2021 saying that my order was being prepared. They said that I should receive my order 14 days before my event (June 6th), so that I can try on my suit to make sure everything fits correctly. They sent me an email on June 8th at 6:07 pm that my suit was not available. They did not have the courtesy to call and when I called a few minutes later, their customer service call center was closed. My groomsman who lives in North Carolina also got the same email.

Their suggestion was to get a suit in another size or a different style. Isn't the purpose of a fitting to get a suit that is the correct size? Also, I wanted a navy blue suit, they did not have any other styles that were somewhat close to what I wanted. If they didn't have the inventory, couldn't they have told me when I placed my order or possibly ordered a new suit from their manufacturer?

I started calling the next morning (June 9th) as soon as they opened, at 8 am. In case there were any connection issues, I called from my cell phone and home phone. After about 2 hours both lines were answered and immediately disconnected. I ended up leaving work so that I could go to the Chicago Showroom. I met with the showroom manager and I explained the situation. He told me that 50 wedding parties had their entire orders canceled due to inventory issues but that did not count our wedding party (although 66% of our order could not be fulfilled) because my best man's suit was being shipped (but late). He was also getting married the same day as my wife and me, when I asked him if he got his suit from The Black Tux and he said no, he went somewhere else.

I was working with this manager for over 3 hours. He was trying to find anything that could potentially be altered to fit. He kept checking with the warehouses but they essentially had no inventory. He was able to get a suit that was too large and the warehouse was supposed to get it sent overnight, with delivery by 10 am on Friday, June 11th. This time was important so that we could get to the tailor to drop off the suit before we were going out of town for final wedding tasks.

I then checked with Jos A Bank and The Men's Warehouse. They did not have any available navy blue suits in their inventory but I could not be upset with them because it was last minute. When I could not rent anywhere, we were looking to purchase. The stores said they would have to order the navy blue suits but the tailors were also behind schedule. We found navy blue suits at Von Maur that were available between 2 different locations. The tailor at Von Maur said their normal time frame would be the following Friday, which would have been in time for the wedding but we were leaving on Wednesday to go back to Des Moines for the wedding and pre-events.

The Black Tux was a last resort and luckily Von Maur came through. The tailor was able to get our navy blue suits by Tuesday just in time for us to leave. The Black Tux agreed to give a full refund on 7/7/2021. Other than the wedding, I did not have a need to buy the suit, thus I was renting, expecting to pay about $150 per person. The suits that we were able to get ended up costing $760 per person after tax. This was a lot more money than we anticipated spending, not to mention all of the stress and time that I had to waste dealing with The Black Tux.

I trusted the positive reviews on some websites but I should have looked deeper. The Black Tux has an F with the Better Business Bureau. I filed a complaint with the BBB to try to get a resolution from The Black Tux, but they never responded to the BBB either.

Whatever you do, do not trust your special events to The Black Tux! Do additional research, I'm confident that you will find other reviews with other bad experiences.
