    BetterHelp

    An easier route to therapy

    • Length of Use: 2+ years
    Overall Experience:

I don’t know if I would have ever gone to in-person therapy. The idea was so daunting to me and I had no experience with counselors. I felt that BetterHelp is more approachable, and I felt able to at least do a phone call with my therapist. The messaging aspect was also huge. I struggled to articulate myself and always felt confrontational. Writing was an extra layer where I felt like I was personally writing for myself. It was a small step to share with my counselor quickly and for someone to respond and help guide me with often very anxious or depressing thoughts. This helped me break the pattern of “keeping it to myself” and made me more confident in being vulnerable and asking for help. I have been using the service for 4 years in both Ohio and Illinois. Both of my counselors have been amazing. I especially appreciated the matching service, which allowed me to pick a counselor who could do faith-based counseling.

    Pros and Cons:

    • Matching service that asks questions about you and what kind of counselor you want
    • Texting and journaling features
    • Discrete nature of telehealth
    • Cost is better than others for out-of-pocket
    • Sometimes my therapist wouldn’t see my messages; app glitches
    • Phone calls used to drop, but it hasn’t done that in years

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
