Best therapy I’ve had

By Taylor H. , Santa Barbara, CA

I’ve been to therapy since 3rd grade and I hadn’t found my therapist for me until I met Cristin on BetterHelp. I don’t usually write reviews but BetterHelp is so helpful, not only can I schedule an appointment 2 days after my last one, but I can also text her 24/7 and she gets back to me super quick. It’s like a best friend who listens to you and is always on your side that also gives professional feedback. I love this app!

P.S. If you’re a student you get a discount.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Therapy 2.0

By Ferdinand R., London, United Kingdom, Verified Reviewer

I've had plenty of experience with therapy in the past. I'm quite intimidated by the sanitized, clinical feel of in-person therapy (I'm sure not all therapists are like this but I've clearly had a rotten experience in the past).

BetterHelp, on the other hand, is therapy as I would choose it to be. I am able to interact with a therapist who has been matched to me based on my granular, specific preferences. I am able to choose when and how I communicate with that therapist, I am able to speak with that therapist from the comfort, safety, and privacy of my own home, and my therapist and I are able to track my progress against the goals we have set using supplementary content that is managed and centralized in a great platform. BetterHelp isn't software for software's sake, this is an actual reimagining of what therapy could and should look like.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Steph, the therapist, is great

BetterHelp works perfectly

They allowed me to choose a new therapist, I didn't feel comfortable with my first one

It isn't cheap, in fact, I won't always be able to afford it

The UX/UI could probably do with a refresh

They help

By Sean S. , California

I never was one to believe in therapy. I believed I could fix it all myself and I didn’t realize the hole I was digging for myself. I took a chance with this app and have not looked back. Marie Rose Walters (my therapist) and BetterHelp have improved my mental state and made me see a life worth living. I still have my bad days but it’s all a working progress. I look forward to my sessions and I just take life one day at a time. Don’t be hardheaded and just give the app shot. At least you’ll be trying.

Length of Use: 6–12 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

The help

The sessions

My mental state

One time my session crashed but they refunded me the money for it in less than 24 hours

Exceeds expectations and is better than traditional therapy for me

By Nancy T. , Miami, FL

I was reluctant to try BetterHelp, thinking it wouldn’t provide the personalized therapy I needed. I am so glad I decided to sign up.

The daily journaling with suggested topics to write about unique to my struggles is so helpful.

My wonderful therapist checks in on me even if I’ve been MIA for a bit and remembers the challenges I face day to day and asks specifically how certain aspects of my life are going. She gives me the tools to overcome obstacles I face in my life and I really feel like I have a friend and a therapist all in one. It brings me a lot of comfort knowing that I can always open the app and jot down my feelings or challenges in real-time.

Overall, such a great service.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

All of the tools it provides with ease of use

Being matched with a great therapist

The ability to use the app anytime day or night

My therapist never forgets what we discuss and how I need her to help

My therapist seems to have a lot of back to back appts so it seems like the service overloads their schedules

Easy and convenient

By Emily H., Selma, TX, Verified Reviewer

I truly love BetterHelp and the ease with which I can talk to a therapist without having to travel from the comfort of my home. Being a full-time nurse and mother, I didn’t think I’d have time for therapy. With BetterHelp, I am able to schedule sessions that fit my schedule instead of trying to make my schedule fit therapy.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Ease of scheduling

Therapy from the comfort of my home

My therapist is incredible

Therapists don’t show for appointments but BetterHelp still charges you anyway

By Ernest S., San Antonio, TX, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp and the therapists that utilize it are complete scam artists that have no interest in helping others, but would rather find creative ways to take their money while providing ZERO services. My therapist just didn’t show up to our appointment with no warning. Then late the next day finally responds with no real apology or explanation. Then you make BetterHelp aware of this, assuming that they would not approve of this behavior and provide a refund. But they refuse to provide a refund even though it is a FACT that my therapist just didn’t show up. So what am I being charged for?

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

No “pros” were specified in this review

Lying therapists that don’t show up for appointments

Not providing refunds for customers who were scammed by therapists

Not one employee with an ounce of compassion at this company

This service has ZERO redeemable qualities

Easy to use/professional therapy

By Ely R., Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, Verified Reviewer

I have been using BetterHelp for over a month now. My therapist is very caring towards me and has helped me tremendously.

I appreciate the convenience of booking frequent video appointments and having the option of messaging my therapist if needed.

One thing I don't like is that I cannot put my subscription on pause. For example, I need once-per-month appointments moving forward but I will still have to pay a weekly subscription otherwise. I need to "quit" therapy and resubscribe in a month to book my visit.

Also, you cannot book more than one appointment in advance and so your appointment options on a weekly basis can be limited as the spots may already have been filled.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Ease of access

Professional therapeutic manner

Affordable subscription

That I cannot put my subscription on pause.

You cannot book more than one appointment in advance.

I may not be able to match with the therapist I worked with once I resume my subscription.

Things get better

By Elise B., Colorado, Verified Reviewer

It took me a couple of therapists and a couple of different attempts to get it right, but I am so glad I am working on myself and that BetterHelp is so flexible to allow you to do it from wherever, with someone who is right for you. I cannot recommend it highly enough to someone to do whenever, not just when things are bad, although it has helped me through an incredibly dark time.

Length of Use: 6–12 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Flexibility

Easy to use platform

Caring people

I am a cheap person and thought it was too expensive (but it's worth it)

Switching time zones was sometimes difficult on the app

Internet connection could be smoother for video

Excellent, affordable mental health service

By Elise L. , New York, NY

I am very happy with the process and services that BetterHelp provides. The weekly sessions with my therapist as well as unlimited texting with my therapist have been very helpful to me in my time of need. I thought the survey to match me with a therapist was comprehensive and efficient, and I am very happy with the therapist I was assigned. Considering how expensive most therapy is, this is a very affordable service.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Excellent mental health resource

By Jaclyn D., Los Angeles, CA, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp has given me so much more than what my medical insurance could offer me. The service has been easy, accessible, and extremely helpful. I highly recommend to anyone seeking mental health care.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Accessible — you don’t need insurance approval, paperwork, etc.

Easy to select a therapist — I went through 2 before I found one that I really liked.

Convenient — I can message my therapist whenever I want, and I get weekly sessions.

Cost is a little high for me, but I believe the price is fair.

It was a perfect match!

By Natalie H., Pottsville, PA, Verified Reviewer

I endlessly searched for a therapist for years. I could never find a doctor locally that I could connect with. I was so skeptical about trying BetterHelp, but I was starting to get desperate. Well, after filling out my surveys and personal info, I was matched with Dr. Hunsley in 1 day. It took everything I had to get on that first call, but I’m so glad I did. It’s only been a few weeks, but I’ve made more progress in those few weeks with her than I ever did with any amount of time with my local doctors. Just try it. You’ve literally got nothing to lose.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Convenient

Bigger pool of doctors to be matched with

Ease of use

Not enough tools on app

Better journal prompts

Easy way to get in touch with a professional that can help you through the issues you might be dealing with. From the comfort of your own home. Help

By Clayton W., Airdrie, Alberta, Canada, Verified Reviewer

So far it’s been nothing but disappointing. Psychiatrists saying they cannot help or not getting back to you. This is people's mental health they are playing with. You email them and they take forever to get back. It’s sad when you pay and you don’t get help. These are people who are sick, that are at their lowest in life, and all they want is home.

Great for expats

By Harry Y., Seattle, WA, Verified Reviewer

I was saved by this service because of the limited options in mental health in Japan. I nearly gave up finding help, but decided to try out BetterHelp. I found messaging to be much easier in expressing my emotions and thoughts, and I'm happy I have the option to communicate with my therapist like this. BetterHelp provides global mental health services to anyone who needs it, anywhere in the world, in any way they desire. Absolutely revolutionary.

BetterHelp

By Lisa B., Long Beach, CA, Verified Reviewer

I wasn't sure if I needed therapy or not, and if BetterHelp wasn't available I probably would have never sought therapy.

Signing up is easy, and it felt really manageable. I matched quickly with a therapist, and it's already been such a positive experience, I'm surprised by what has come to light in my own life so far.

The survey is very good, and comprehensive. It even has options for religious things, if you are seeking a therapist who can help with that as well.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Signing up felt very manageable

It's online, I would have never even tried therapy if I didn't have an online option

Everything feel very risk free

There's no 'dark mode' the website is very nice, but it's bright

Most of the groupinars are very early for anyone who doesn't live on the east coast

Really great accessible service

By Charis W., Marbella, Spain, Verified Reviewer

Having looked unsuccessfully for a therapist to match my needs locally. I turned online and found BetterHelp.com. The entry assessment in the form of questions was very comprehensive and allowed me to break down why I was there in the first place. BetterHelp then matched me with a therapist, who was exactly what I needed, all the while assuring me I could change if I wanted or wasn't happy. Their therapists are available through messaging at all times and they schedule FaceTime to suit you. Their billing is very reasonable and even makes allowances for your income, and their technical support when needed was prompt, helpful, and considerate. I have recommended them to literally everyone I know.

Length of Use: 6–12 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Online, so very accessible, as well as 24-hour text chat service

Matching to therapist with options to change

Initial online assessment form

Life changing

By Peter C. , Oak Island, NC

I couldn’t be happier. My day-to-day life is literally better, easier. My doctor is real. Her methods are fantastic. She’s been a savior for me, my wife, and my life. I can’t quantify in words what therapy has done for me. I’ve had a couple of counselors before. But never have I felt this level of care and professionalism. I tell everyone who will listen how important this has been for me and my growth. I hope people read this and give it a shot. I processed trauma that I had long forgotten about.

A very useful platform

By Leonor C., United Kingdom, Verified Reviewer

I decided to use BetterHelp to manage some issues I was having, and I got a therapist very quickly who helped me work through them. They do a good job asking the right questions to pair you with the right therapist, and allow you to change if you need to at no extra cost.

The platform seems well organized and well protected, which is important to maintain confidentiality. All in all, I'm happy with the service provided and would recommend it to someone who would benefit from therapy but can't/doesn't want to meet someone in person.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

It's easy access

Affordable

No travel necessary

The app doesn't always work 100% in video mode

They could let us pay per session instead of monthly

I'd like a sound notification when the therapist is online and contacting us to initiate the therapy session

Confused

By Andrew S. , Kings Beach, CA

Honestly, pretty bad. The first therapist I was assigned to made me feel like I wasn’t a priority. Like he had better things to do; with all the background noise and distractions, it was hard to focus. Then I read the bio of a person I felt confident in, but “better help” wouldn’t allow us to meet because of the states we live in. Overall, just very confused and unsatisfied with the “better help” I’ve been getting. Seems like a huge waste of money at this point.

This is an excellent source for my mental health

By H B., Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Verified Reviewer

I have made the very best decision to improve my mental health by joining BetterHelp. I have had many years of therapy, however, not in this format.

BetterHelp is really excellent! I have a therapist who is wise, well educated, trustworthy, and with the kindness to be compassionately guiding me through some very difficult times. I completely trust and look forward to my sessions. I have never had this much support for my mental health before!

BetterHelp provides me with the opportunities to learn about my specific mental health issues by joining a host of webinars that have been offered. They are conducted by some outstanding doctors who specialize in various fields and they are extremely valuable. The option to just sign in and discover new tools for coping mechanisms, listening, and learning how others feel about the very same subject matter in the chats is so informative and valuable. I love this part of the experience!

I am able to write in a journal every day while having the option to share directly with my therapist upon completion or just to save it for myself to review several weeks later. It’s very helpful for me to remember the challenges I have faced and what I have learned from them by keeping this private journal. I chose the option to send it to my therapist after completing because I believe it is an incredibly safe, useful tool to communicate daily. I have never thought I needed this, however, now that I am here, it’s wonderful.

There are just so many positive tools, excellent customer service when I required it, and by far the very best decision I have made for myself in quite some time. I typically resist change but when I read what BetterHelp offered, I joined.

I’m honestly looking forward to helping myself feel better, have a better quality of life, and I have a lot of hope for my future while working with my therapist.
