Hair loss - Madison Reed color?

By Joan H., Houston, TX, Verified Reviewer

My first and only application of Madison Reed color was 5 weeks ago. I was very pleased with the color and application. I have thick medium length hair. Three weeks ago I noticed an alarming amount of hair in my brush, drain, and on wood floors. The only new product I have used was MR color.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

No different from a drugstore

By Katrina M., Durham, NC, Verified Reviewer

I've been dying my hair since high school (20+ years) and was hoping for a real solution to my uneven color and gray roots but instead ended up with results exactly like the brands sold at drugstores and low-end beauty supply stores. I have medium dark brown hair with a moderate amount of gray and even after leaving on roots the extra ten minutes, the gray hair is still noticeable and now has a reddish hue. My scalp also has never burned so much compared to other products I've used. Definitely not worth the extra money and it turns out it really IS too good to be true.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Disappointing, overpriced product

By Cici C., Texas, Verified Reviewer

I was looking for a Paraben-free dye and found Madison Reed. While the color is ok (a bit reddish compared to others in the dark brown), the pricing and packaging were not.

I'm not excited about companies that ship you extra unnecessary items that end up in a landfill - especially when they contain chemicals. I tried 3 times to get someone there to help me (after all they HAVE the color and developer without the other components) - but they will only sell it as an "add-on" to a "kit."

Customer service had the audacity to tell me that the extra materials were "recyclable" and when I pressed for information about what recycling location would accept them - then they backed up.

Shame on Madison Reed for not selling the more environmentally packaged product they already have.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Not so good for covering gray

By Ellen L., Charlotte, NC, Verified Reviewer

Disappointed in my gray coverage. Going to have to color it again. I think the product needs to stay on longer but I followed ALL the directions for gray coverage. It seems that the required 45-50 minutes should be adequate. There’s not much else to say but this post requires 180 words so I’m just typing to fill the requirements.

Not worth the trouble

By Jennifer N., Rock Springs, Wyoming , Verified Reviewer

I have been dying my hair for about 20 years and have very stubborn grays. After hearing about Madison Reed I decided to give it a try. I’m sadly disappointed! I have naturally black hair and my gray hairs ended up red at my roots, my husband literally laughed at me when we went out into the sun.

Terrible hair color for natural black hair (great customer service though)

By Laneen H., Texas, Verified Reviewer

I wish I could give this company a better review. They are so kind and professional. However, this product did a HORRIBLE job covering (not covering) my very gray hair. Secondly, it severely damaged my hair. I used the color primer and the 3.5N. The box was beautiful and the pre-measured product was so easy to use. I was so hopeful about having a good experience and they promised complete coverage, moisture, and shine. My hair was dull and dry and brittle afterward, on top of horribly matched color.

When I called to share my experience the rep was extremely nice. She suggested a darker color and offered to send a free kit to re-do my hair. She stated it would be safe to recolor the roots immediately upon arrival. Well, I accepted the replacement but never used it. Something in my gut said it was not safe to re-color with permanent color so quickly. I am so glad I listened because my hair has not stopped shedding to this day (it has been a month now). It is very slowly recovering back its normal moisture level but seems like I have many months to go. I know I am going to have to eventually cut this damaged hair away.

I usually use a 3N Demi by Argan One-n-Only. It is inexpensive and does a FABULOUS job and gives me 110% gray coverage with shine and minimal temporary loss of moisture. I regret experimenting with this permanent color. It is NOT good for natural Black Hair (I am 4b/c type). They will tell you it is but don't believe the hype. For natural hair that you want to grow out, always use a demi and always go the same color or slightly darker. For me, this hard lesson will cost me 18 months of hair growth. Sigh...

Nice try Madison Reed, but please do not advertise your product to Black Naturals - this is not for us!

Very disappointed

By Hara C., New York, NY, Verified Reviewer

I was very excited to try Madison Reed as I was tired of spending money at the salon and the drugstore brands seemed to fade after a few weeks.

Everyone there was very nice AND they totally ruined my hair color.

I went to the salon for the "Roots" service.

What they don't tell you: You need to have your hair dyed single process with their product for the "Roots" service to match the rest of your hair. They are very limited in the shades of color that they offer. If you have medium to dark brown hair you should be just fine.

I expected a salon that specializes in color would tell me that they would not be able to match my color. I came in with light golden brown. When they were finished, I had medium brown-red on the crown and the rest of my hair was light golden brown. A disaster!

I was told that they DO not pull the color to the ends of the strand and that is called "single-process color".

My expectation would be that the stylist would inform me that they would not be able to match my roots to the ends.

They agreed to "fix" the problem for free. Now, my hair color is some weird red/med brown and my hairline is copper.

BTW, my scalp is very itchy so I'm not sure about their natural products.

In conclusion, I'm going to have to go to a real salon and have the color corrected back to my original light golden brown.

Everyone is different

By Cheryl S., Washington DC, Verified Reviewer

I've been using Madison Reed hair color since 2017 and have had nothing but excellent experiences with both products and customer service. I've changed my color 4 times and have never been disappointed. The packaging makes the whole experience feel like a treat. That there is no awful smell like with most drugstore brands pleases me. That the packaging is recyclable also makes me happy. The shampoo and conditioner leave my hair softer than before I dyed it. I would (and have!) absolutely recommend Madison Reed to friends, but because everyone is different, I would also recommend that they do a skin and strand test.

Length of Use: 2+ years

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

No awful smell

Everything needed is in the kit

Great colors that leave my hair soft

Pricier than most alternatives

My hair is falling off

By SLC C., Douglas, AZ, Verified Reviewer

I ordered the color they suggested but it came out very reddish and did not cover my grays. They contacted me and sent me a free box, tray, and brush. I am going to throw it away! Shortly after I colored my hair with the first box, my hair started falling off in clumps and it is now extremely dry. I am not sure what I am going to do at this point. My hairline has receded quite a bit and my hair looks overall awful.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Fast shipping

Representatives are very nice

My hair is falling off

My hair is very dry

Did not cover my grays

Madison Reed ruined my hair

By Trish M., Florida, Verified Reviewer

My hair fell out in clumps after using their Sardinia red hair color. My thick beautiful hair is now thin and brittle. I lost about 30% of my hair. I can't believe they tout their products as all-natural and this happens. Not only did my hair fall out in spots but my scalp is still tingling and sore. I'm going to have to see a dermatologist about it. I pray it's nothing more serious. Please be warned about this company. They know this is happening and aren't doing anything about it.

Beware of using MR

By Kathy S., Chicago, IL, Verified Reviewer

I used this brand for a few years. I really liked the color and the process. Some time after switching to MR I started losing clumps of hair.

I saw doctors, got medical tests, took supplements, saw more doctors, did hair treatments, etc. You name it, I did it. I continued to use MR hair dye and my hair continued to fall out. I had thick beautiful hair when I started MR, Now my hair is much less dense, and thin. It never occurred to me that this "safe" "nourishing" MR color was causing the damage. Until while doing some research, I found out what they substitute for the ammonia, which is ethanolamine, is very damaging and has been found to cause hair loss. I was shocked. I stopped using this dye as soon as I found out several months ago. I am so upset that a company that touts itself as being a safer, better alternative uses a chemical known to cause hair loss.

I would not wish hair loss on anyone. I have yet to see if it will be reversible. I strongly do not recommend this product.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend
