My BetterHelp experience

By Emma W. , United Kingdom

I found BetterHelp when looking for a therapist at a difficult point in my life. I got paired with Tamara and she was absolutely amazing. She listened, was kind and caring. She helped me find my way back to myself again after some difficult life events. I also suffer with anxiety, and the sessions really helped me learn to manage this better through positive actions of my own. The weekly sessions were great, and having the text support available too was a comfort, knowing I could speak to her in between sessions when I needed that extra support.

I would highly recommend giving it a go. For me, it was better than using a local therapist, it felt much more private and confidential, as some aspects of my therapy were quite personal.

I have finished my sessions now, but would 100% use BetterHelp again if I need to in the future.

Length of Use: 6–12 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Feels very private and confidential

My therapist was amazing and a perfect match for me

Flexibility with sessions and the text support service too

Price - but therapy is never cheap

Efficient and reliable

By William C. , Nampa, ID

Besides an enormous list of highly qualified counselors, BetterHelp also provides a great list of groupinars where specific topics are addressed in a general sense, providing a lot of good information and useful tools (to overcome specific obstacles or create/continue healthy habits).

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Efficiency – in less than one day I was connected with my counselor

Groupinars provide extended discussion, tools, and info about specific topics

Reliability – I can communicate very freely with my counselor at any time through the in-app chat

Allows me to write and share journal entries and other files directly with my counselor

What therapy?

By Susan M. , Scottsdale, AZ

It took a week for an appointment. Fine. I joined a group session. We all were hurting and complaining and exchanging ideas, but we are not therapists. Why didn’t the therapist say anything!? My appointment finally gets here and the therapist canceled me saying I’d prefer video. She doesn’t offer video, so I chose chat. This app has made my mental health WORSE. Thanks BetterHelp!

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

No “pros” were specified in this review

No therapy in group session

My individual therapist is lazy and won’t work

I can’t even reach anyone to tell them this

Helpful

By Bee M. , New York

BetterHelp has been great. It’s nice that they give multiple options of ways to communicate. Messaging, live chats, or phone calls. For those who may be nervous about therapy or have never gone to therapy before, the messaging option is a nice way to start to help you ease into the process of therapy! It’s also just nice to have someone to talk to when you’re feeling down or anxious or just need to get something off your chest! I’ve only been with BetterHelp for a short time, but I’m glad I took the step! I hope my review will help others “take the step”, too!

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

The flexibility

Journaling

3 different options (messaging, live chat, phone)

Sometimes it may take a while for the therapist to respond through messaging due to them having other sessions

Awful

By Jane D. , Salt Lake City, UT

I would give 1 star if I could. I was canceled an hour before my first two sessions and then I was stood up for my "first" third session that I had scheduled. I am extremely disappointed with BetterHelp. I am requesting a full refund and will not be scheduling any more appointments. Being canceled on/stood up for the first 3 appointments is SO unprofessional. BetterHelp has never reached out to me either. Being that this is a mental health site, I am super disappointed in their handling of the situation.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Someone actively listening to me

Just do it

By Deborah W. , Boone, NC

I’ve been in therapy with good and not for me therapists. The good ones can really make a difference.

This first one I was linked with is perfect. Like I said, not my first rodeo. She has been there seen that and has good insights and instincts.

I’m sure the one you are paired with will be good and if not right, try another.

Just do it. It’s the rest of your life. Make it yours!

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Perfect match

Never feel rushed

Good feedback

The ease of finding a new therapist can't be overstated

By Sian T., Helsinki, Finland, Verified Reviewer

I think people who've never needed therapy before have no idea how time-consuming, energy-sapping, and emotionally and mentally exhausting it is. BetterHelp gets 5 stars from me because they've made it so simple and easy to jump from one therapist to another, offering catered lists of people who match the qualities you've asked for.

You don't have to drive or hop on a bus to someone's office, have a "test session" with them to see if the two of you mesh well, and then keep making that journey to the office if you decide to stick with them. It's a few clicks on a screen. And if you don't work well with someone? It's a single click to disengage and swap therapists, try someone new.

When you're struggling with, well, anything, it's such an enormous relief to have the process made so simple and easy for you. The effort on your part is minimal, which is wonderful when you have almost no energy or effort to spare.

And as someone living in a country where I don't speak the main language, it was another enormous relief to be instantly connected to therapists who spoke my language, whereas trying to find someone fluent in my language that I can meet in person was just impossible. For that reason, I'd massively recommend BetterHelp to expats or anyone else who struggles to find an in-person therapist who speaks their language.

Two noteworthy flaws:

1) If you don't stay with the first therapist who is matched to you, BetterHelp then offers you a list of potential alternates. But not all of the people on that list tick all the boxes you ticked in the initial questionnaire. It was frustrating to be shown so many potential therapists who didn't work in the areas I needed. All you have to do is keep scrolling down the list, though, there are plenty of people on the list who do match your requirements.

2) The therapists themselves tick the boxes on what issues they work with. I've not encountered anyone who lied about what they work with, but many of the therapists who say they deal with trauma do not, in fact, deal with serious trauma, like child abuse, combat experience, being a victim of an assault, etc. They seem to think that counseling people through a divorce means they can tick the box for trauma. This is obviously hugely misleading to those with more serious trauma who are looking for help. If you do go looking for someone to help with trauma, and they do not specify what kinds in their bio, I recommend asking upfront in your first meeting. I wasted a fair bit of time with someone who was not qualified or experienced enough to help me, because she'd checked the trauma box when (in my opinion) she shouldn't have.

3) If you do change therapists, you lose all records of your messages and other interactions with your previous therapist. Personally, I'd have preferred to keep mine.

One critique/suggestion: I wish BetterHelp allowed you to search for/filter therapists by what kind of therapy they offer – EMDR vs cognitive behavioral therapy vs psychoanalysis, and so on. For those of us who have bounced around the ring a few times, we know what hasn't worked and would like to skip over people who only use those methods.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

It makes it so easy to find a therapist

It makes scheduling appointments very simple and easy

Because it's global, you can find the right person to help you, even if they're on the other side of the world

Some therapists exaggerate their expertise

Options offered if you and your first "matched" therapist don't work out, don't always fill your listed requirements

No ability to filter potential therapists by types of therapy/methodologies

Everyone should see a therapist, BetterHelp is the easiest way to do so on your own terms

By Jake T. , Akron, OH

After a few years away from therapy, I came to BetterHelp looking for help managing my ADHD symptoms and building a new routine. BetterHelp has helped me get access to an excellent therapist, when I need them, how I needed them, as well as providing excellent tools for self-study and a messaging function, which means I can always reach out to my therapist at the moment that I need them most.

Length of Use: 6–12 months

Pros and Cons

The messaging function means I can always vent when I need to

Scheduling is simple and easy and I can always find time to fit my schedule a week or two out

The tools provided by the site are phenomenal and helped my find renewed control of my ADHD symptoms

Can find who’s right for you

By Imogen P. , New South Wales, Australia

I could not recommend BetterHelp enough! I have a shortage of therapists in my area and they have extremely long wait times, which would not work for me with a baby. When I signed up I didn’t mesh well with the first therapist I was matched with but with a click of a button, I had a list of 15+ therapists I could choose from with their areas of expertise and blurbs about them. I was able to find the perfect match for me and within only 3 sessions she has helped me immensely.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Amazing!

By Jennie R. , Lake Worth, FL

I love BetterHelp. It’s great and convenient. My therapist is awesome and the webinars are also cool. I’ve tried therapy a plethora of times and I feel like I’ll stick to it this time FINALLY. I personally hate going to an office and sitting in front of someone spewing out my life so video chat is great. You can also message and do phone calls, I think. I just still like to see the person, just not upfront and in person.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Everyone at BetterHelp has been helpful, insightful, and caring. I’ve been in touch with their client services team a few times and always had amazing experiences, they’re helpful and responsive. My counselor really helped me get through a rough patch in my life. Fabulous!

By Kyrsten B. , Labrador City, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada

In Canada, the cost for psychotherapy is approximately $190/hour. This price is out of reach for many, while BetterHelp has reasonable packages that allow you to choose how much you pay and what service you receive. This service has helped me feel better about my isolation, and has helped me through my rough patches so I can excel!

Length of Use: 6–12 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Get help fast

By Maximilian G., Stuttgart, Germany, Verified Reviewer

I live in Germany and it's hard to get help here on mental health issues in a timely manner. I suffer from depression for 9 years and am on anti-depressants for 2 years. The medication helped me think better, but I still don't really feel better. I realized that I need to start learning how to build a healthy relationship with my emotions to feel better. With BetterHelp I got to talk to a therapist within a day. I can message him any time and the website has a space where I can safely share my thoughts in a journal. My therapist can then review them. This helps me a lot. He was able to give me advice that has already begun to show some progress.

Literally changed my life

By Dayna Q. , Irvine, CA

I suggest this app to everyone I know. For years I put off therapy (even though I was in DESPERATE need) because the search process was overwhelming. BetterHelp made it simple, and I was connected with my therapist in like a day.

Since seeing my therapist, my life has changed exponentially. I will never be "fixed," but I feel I have learned so many coping tools to work with the "broken" parts of me.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Book anytime I want, late hours too

Life-changing tools acquired

Login from anywhere

I wish I could book multiple appointments in advance instead of one at a time

An excellent option for people looking to try therapy!

By Raleigh P. , Austin, TX

BetterHelp has truly been a blessing during quarantine, especially during 2020. The therapist that I currently see through BetterHelp has been the best I’ve ever had, better than those I’ve seen in person.

Length of Use: 1–2 years

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Easy, don’t even need to leave the house.

If you’re linked with a therapist that you’re not compatible with, you can easily switch to a new one

When I was uninsured, it was the cheapest option I could find

The platform/UI itself can be a bit buggy

Wish they gave you the chance to have a meeting with therapist before making them your official therapist
