Highly recommend BetterHelp

By Brooke I., Ohio, Verified Reviewer

I joined BetterHelp because Ariana Grande was giving away free sessions to people. I was in such a weird place in my life and honestly, kind of a dark place that I desperately needed somebody to confide in that was a professional because of my relationship. My therapist has helped me see so much that I wasn’t seeing before and has helped me become a better person in learning how to set boundaries and not let people walk on me. I am forever grateful for that and will always recommend this platform to anybody looking for professional help, no matter what that looks like to them.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Convenient

Texting all hours

Virtual calls if I want

She has helped me through some of the most difficult moments in my life. Disappointed

By Jorge M. , New Haven, CT

I would’ve thought my therapist was in a parking lot of a Starbucks — the WiFi sucked, and her reception was terrible. Obviously, she was home because I heard 30 cats meowing nonstop. She never made iContact, never gave me any real input, and just regurgitated what I said to her. Sad, absolutely sad. I found better information and more help off of YouTube.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Convenience

Affordability

Reception

So happy to finally be taking care of my mental health!

By Ashley S., Los Angeles, CA, Verified Reviewer

I originally had a different therapist than I have now. I matched with her kind of like a dating app, if you will, lol. We were not a match, though I appreciate her insight and her listening skills. Our schedules ended up not matching and I decided to try another fish in the sea. I am SO happy I did. Johnathan has been amazing! I meet with him every week and he is very responsive if I need him outside of our time. Those are only in VERY stressful times for me but, I appreciate the attentiveness if he's available and can help me in those times. My stress levels are down. I still struggle on occasion with sleeping but if I follow my routine now, it happens alot less and my sleep is now also, alot better! I am setting boundaries now with people that make me and the other person more comfortable and makes me feel more in control of my life. Not every day is a good day but I'm learning how to balance the days out much better so I don't have such highs and lows. I have Johnathan (and myself also) to thank. I am still a work in progress, but I sure am feeling a whole heck of a lot better overall. I HIGHLY recommend BetterHelp!

Length of Use: 6–12 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Convenience with my schedule

Matching/choosing therapist

Knowledge and genuineness from my therapist

Steps and gentle coaching I receive from my therapist

First therapist was a no-show

Wish it was covered by insurance, but thats a bigger societal issue

Should supply tissues for the cry sessions

Best decision I have made

By Jasmine B., New Jersey, Verified Reviewer

I wasn't sure if I was going to sign up for the BetterHelp service, but I finally did. They did such an amazing job pairing me with the perfect therapist, and he has helped me tremendously with my social anxiety. So far so good. I have been making such great progress. I'm finally able to push through my problems, instead of running from them. I'm definitely a lot more confident now.

It was worth it

By Johel F., Sterling Heights, MI, Verified Reviewer

I never thought having therapy online was possible at all until a YouTuber had a sponsorship from BetterHelp. It was very much worth the monthly price and was very convenient to have therapy sessions through my phone rather than going to a place for it.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

I could switch and choose my therapist

I could message them anytime outside of our sessions

Even though it's cheaper than getting therapy in person, it's still pretty pricey

Great therapy and readily accessible

By Dora M., California, Verified Reviewer

Finding BetterHelp was the best thing for my therapy journey. I was so discouraged attempting to look for local therapists and trying to negotiate prices and schedules, inquire about insurance, etc. This took all the hassle and jumping through hoops out of it for me. And you get help from customer service if you need it when something isn't going well. For example, my first therapist on here wasn't a good fit so they quickly helped me find something better and refunded me the sessions till I got to the therapist I now have had for 1 year.

Length of Use: 1–2 years

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

The ease of online therapy

Customer service is responsive

Fantastic therapist that I have now

Online platform for messages, worksheets, goal sharing, etc. (I'm a visual learner and find this helpful to look back on)

Ease of scheduling

Access to unlimited workshops

The price

Initial lag time in placement with therapist (but worth it in the end of you stick with it)

Workshops were live not recorded, so hard to match with work schedule on a couple occasions

So much to say about my love for this platform

By Rebecca P., Quincy, MA, Verified Reviewer

Matching with a counselor based on your needs is easy. The support team will help you out with specific criteria and match you with your preferred counselor if you have difficulty yourself. Being able to message your counselor as often as you like is wonderful. In traditional therapy only communicating weekly at more cost than this service is a huge put out and put off.

I always felt like if I had an issue on a Thursday but wasn't getting in until Friday I already had to find a way to get through it, and with so much life happening each day I wouldn't have enough time in a 50-minute session to get beyond just going over my week and it would take forever at a huge cost to get comfortable/know if a counselor was a good fit or not. I never felt I was really getting "help" in traditional therapy and it caused so much strain, making life work around the counselor's availability rather than my own.

All that is done away with BetterHelp! No more commute, no more taking inconvenient time out of life trying to get better by having to make something else worse, no more waiting all week, no more feeling awkward each session. I love the option for introverted people to just engage in live typing or sending a message anytime that will be responded to within 24 hours, no more fight with insurance to get in and immense difficulty to change practitioners. All the benefits, NONE of the hassle.

There are awesome groupinars that go on live where you can anonymously communicate/connect with other members using the service from all around the world, but if it doesn't work for your schedule as long as you sign up you get access to the recording for a week, and even if you miss out on that, they will repeat. You have a safe online journal that is private but you can share passages with your counselor as you see fit.

Even if you change counselors you can copy all your message exchanges to Word or some other document and it shortens the "getting to know you's" with your next counselor. Someone took all the big problems with traditional counseling and decided to fix them all at once, and I can't confirm that, but I genuinely think that's how BetterHelp was created.

Length of Use: 1–2 years

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

A number of ways to work with my budget

Fast matching to a counselor

Ease of ability to change counselors if someone doesn't fit right

The support team is fast and diligent about answering questions or helping with an issue

Being able to message your counselor anytime bridges the gap of standard therapy practices

Groupinars - oh my are they wonderful with such broad ranges of topic

Their sister site Regain for marriage/relationship counseling is also wonderful and offers the same opportunities

This is not a money grab, if you need to cancel they will offer that "pause" and not bill you further, they are good about crediting

Sometimes the counselors licensed in your area can be few to choose from when you have a specific need

I started BetterHelp at a place of desperation, not really sure what to expect. But since starting BetterHelp, I have gained so much confidence and freedom. By Katie R., New Jersey, Verified Reviewer

Affordable, quality mental healthcare

By Lily C., Omaha, NE, Verified Reviewer

I've been using BH for 4.5 years, and have had two main therapists in that time. Both have been excellent, attentive, professional, and kind.

There are so many therapists to choose from, and with a little patience, I think almost anyone can find the right fit for them.

Also, they provide financial aid, which makes mental healthcare very affordable to those of us who could never afford it before! That is huge and much appreciated. And the customer service is high quality, as well.

Thanks, BetterHelp, for all the help you provide us. You make the world a better place.

Details are important

By Lisa S., Frederick, MD, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp is exactly what I needed. They ask specific questions so that you don't end up going from one therapist to another before you find a good fit. Because of the details, you will be matched with a therapist that you can connect with right away. You tell them who you want (i.e. age, gender, religious preference, ethnicity). The entire process was very easy.

Simple, stress free, and effective

By Tom G. , Milwaukee, WI

The sign-up experience was very quick, I was matched up just as fast, and my therapist has been extremely helpful in a short amount of time. A quality app interface helps to streamline and ease the pressures and tensions of seeking mental health. The guidance I’ve received from my therapist has been just as beneficial.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Fast and easy

Genuine feedback and support

Follow ups and support outside of my sessions

Confusing how much I was charged up front

Because I’m not signed up for reoccurring sessions and sign up for each one individually at the moment, I’m afraid I may lose momentum and rhythm with my therapy

MM Therapy

By Michaela M. , New York City, NY

My therapist listened to me and always made me feel valued and validated in all my thoughts and feelings. She helped me understand why I was feeling certain emotions, and helped me find my triggers extremely fast. When I asked, she asked me thought-provoking questions that lead to me digging deeper in myself than I ever have before. I grew so much in just a few short months. I'm so grateful to have been connected with Dr. Rampersad right away after joining.

By Joan W., Brookfield, WI, Verified Reviewer

I’ve participated in face-to-face therapy so was hesitant about a virtual format. Therapy from the safety of my home is easier and less threatening.
