Disappointing experience but great customer service!

By Julia, Atlanta, GA, Verified Reviewer

I've had Club W for the last 10 months, and had multiple shipping issues. I also wasn't a huge fan of most of the wines I received. I just canceled after three attempted deliveries of this month's shipment (attempted delivery to my workplace where there was a receptionist to sign for the delivery). I was pleasantly surprised by my customer service rep! She apologized profusely for the multiple shipping headaches, and helped me quickly cancel my membership without trying to get me to stay on like most membership services. She also gave me a full refund for the wine I didn't receive.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Okay, but worth the effort?

By Jack Chaney, Texas, Verified Reviewer

I have been a member for several months now and have found the quality of the wines to be okay, but not great. I believe I can find very comparable (maybe even better) quality of wine at my local HEB. The big thing for everyone is value. I can take my $45 and get a really good selection at my stores. No shipping and handling. The other side of that is convenience. Buying from Club W saves you time. Things all to consider.

Shady - was a member for a year

By Ryan H., Minneapolis, MN, Verified Reviewer

Winc is a rather noisy, data-harvesting service with empty features.

If you want four bottles of wine per month, go to the store. You’re going to be driving somewhere to get your wine, anyways, since delivery drivers can’t just drop off alcohol at your house. Nope, we had to pick up our wine at Walgreens every month.

I say "noisy" because of the amount of texts and emails I got regarding promos and their investing opportunities, none of which provided any real value to my membership. Maybe I’m not the key demographic here, but I just wanted wine.

Not seeing how the ratings and flavor profile builder made any sort of impact on the recommendations each month, which only ever came down to the hot new wine they’re peddling. On that note - there’s no real automatic, curated process here. Whatever ads you see about letting them take the reigns on selecting and shipping are misleading.

Beneath the surface, Winc comes off as a shady money-driven business that has less to do with wine. Their game is gathering data to help them do business with brick-and-mortars and liquor stores. Why do I know this? Because they don’t keep it a secret - it’s in their sales deck for prospective investors.

They know how millennials like 1), convenience and 2), an "experience" that’s 3), tailored to them. Unfortunately, Winc is none of those three things. The glitz and pretty marketing is hollow.

Two cherries on top: their app is just their website in an app wrapper, and in order to cancel your membership, you have to start a live chat with them and be asked multiple times to consider alternatives that keeps you on as a member.

Hey, at least we liked the wine.

Pros and Cons

Confusing to understand what happens at first

Misleading app and marketing

Bad business practices

They make it really hard to cancel the 'membership'

By Mister s. , New York

Tried several times to cancel the monthly charges. No link to cancel. They say the only way to cancel is to go on email chat but it's a blind link! You literally have to call to cancel. They're only open on California time. Totally bogus to make you work that hard to cancel. I wouldn't recommend this.

Not worth the money or hassle

By Katie , NC

Ordered one box of wine. It was decent, but not worth the cost. I have several nice, local wine shops near my house that have better wine and lower prices.

It's difficult to cancel. I called and was on hold for 10 minutes before I talked to a person. Of course they asked why I was quitting and I told them I no longer drink (good way to avoid them trying to convince you to stay). I guess he didn't have much to say after that. He canceled my account, then asked if I need anything else. I said, "no, but thank you so much" and he hung up immediately. Not professional and downright rude.

TOTAL RIP OFF

By MH , Dallas

Place an order with this company and they will automatically sign you up for monthly boxes at $45 each, which you can only cancel by phone. There is no warning that they are going to do this. And the wine isn't even good. This company is a COMPLETE SCAM! Stay away. Don't even sign up.

Same review as others

By Anonymous ,

I didn't know (since they don't inform you) that you are signing up for a monthly service upon the first order. I just wanted to try to see if I liked it, next I know, I'm getting a notice that my card is being charged. Pain in the butt to cancel account as well. Total waste.

Scam

By Becky , Boston, MA

Same as other reviews, I purchased the first time to try and there was no notice at all letting me know about the auto enrollment for monthly shipping. I could not cancel online and needed to call in order to do so instead. I hate the experience! It's just a scam!

Feels like a scam

By Michael , Seattle, WA

I ordered a box to try the service. It turns out I automatically got subscribed to receive monthly boxes. There is no way to stop this on their websites and the person on chat said she couldn't do it either and that I need to call. Sounds like they're working on making it as hard as possible for people to opt out.

Low quality wine and poor customer service

By Anthony DiSanti, New York, NY, Verified Reviewer

A friend recommended this service, so I gave it a try. The wines were low quality with very simple flavor profiles and extremely short finishes. If you're looking for something cheap that doesn't taste bad, this is a good choice, but if you like wine, don't bother.

More annoying was that cancellation was difficult. They don't have any way to cancel on the site, nor via email, nor by calling them unless you call during business hours in their time zone. I was also charged a cancellation fee, which I always consider to be the sign of a less reputable vendor.

Bad web experience and difficult to cancel

By Aaron W. ,

It's not very apparent that you will be joining a monthly subscription. Cancellation is only possible by phone which is extremely difficult for my situation and they refused to accommodate my request by email.
