Received the stress of therapy

By Josie F., Butte, MT, Verified Reviewer

I've had bad experiences with therapy in the past — I don't like when they pry into my past when I'm not ready. Not to mention the time, effort, and cost of getting into therapy when I'm not sure it will even work out. With BetterHelp, I avoided all of that! I feel like my therapist is the perfect match for me. All of the stress I had about getting therapy was solved instantly. I do wish in the advertisements they mentioned more about what they offer. You don't only have a therapist matched to you, they also allow confidential journaling, and even group webinars on different topics. The best part about the webinars is that you don't have to worry about attending, they will send you the recording for up to 7 days after the groupinar. BetterHelp is definitely the way to go if you want therapy!

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

I didn't have to wait months to see a therapist

They match me to a therapist for my needs

I get to look at reviews and information about my therapist before agreeing to get therapy from them

I wish there was more initial guidance or "tutorial" on how to use the app before using it

I really love my therapist. He is super kind and helpful. Listens and supports my overall objectives in life and really understands I truly need the help. I couldn’t do this without the guidance of a professional and I get this here with one-on-one video calls, messages, or calls. I also enjoy the group classes I have availability to. Journaling has also proved to be a great outlet. I’m really happy with this entire service.

BetterHelp is super convenient and I can hit it into my rapidly changing schedule with ease. BetterHelp gives me lots of choices and options for both the way I receive my therapy but also my therapist. I can do my sessions anytime and anywhere at a cheaper cost than an in-person therapist.

BetterHelp review

By Christine C. , Lansing, MI

I therapist-hopped for the past couple of years trying to find someone who could help me with my PTSD and anxiety.

Once the pandemic happened, my mental health went to the sidelines and I struggled with my monkey mind while trying to keep my business running and all the fears developed with covid.

I finally decided I had enough and knew I needed help. They matched me with my therapist Gwen. So I have been working with Gwen since last December and my journey of self-care is still going, but I have improved so much.

I am able to understand why I do the things I do and that I am not my emotions, they are just what I feel and I can have control over them. I do still feel lost at times but the best part is if I have an episode, it used to last for weeks. Now it's only a day!

BetterHelp has really given my life back and the great therapists there really take the time to hear what you're saying and give you empathetic and good feedback on the subject at hand.

The worksheets that are included help me figure out how to break my thoughts and worries down and look at them in a productive way and work through them. I can look at them anytime to help myself when I do have those emotions come up and start doubting myself and my abilities.

Throughout my entire time so far, I realized that I wasn't taking care of my own personal needs and was treating myself pretty poorly.

I ended up closing my business down for a few months to reestablish a better business and so far it has made my life so much easier. I don't end up working 16-hour days with barely any breaks. I am so much more productive and I have been able to get some of myself back.

I know it will always be work and some days are better than others. But if you're willing to put the time in with the worksheets and your therapist, you will get to where you want to be!

BetterHelp really saved me.

Don’t cheat yourself

By Steven M., Omaha, NE, Verified Reviewer

Therapy is something that would be difficult to put into a nice presentation.

Getting help can be devastating and can cause more anxiety than the issues if you don’t find a safe and compassionate space or person to talk to. BetterHelp seems to have a well-made system in place for matching and for changing your selection if you need. I have had success with only a few sessions and plan to attend more as I need them, or to check in on myself.

Yeah, that’s really what it can be!

Just a place to check in on yourself and find the tools to make your life better or more sustainable.

You could spend hours/days scrolling YouTube but the reality is, you’re not qualified. And if you are, maybe an outside personally developed opinion, based on your specific circumstances, will only make what great insights you have more rounded and refined in your own mind.

Don’t doom scroll or shame spiral, get qualified help and a voice that speaks to you. Therapists are people, each unique with their own lives and experiences, so -find the type of motivation you need to be your best self.

I can almost guarantee you, there are people around you that need that better you on their team. Don’t cheat them out of the best you, and certainly don’t cheat yourself.

Professional, practical, and affordable

By Katherine G., San Luis Obispo, CA, Verified Reviewer

I’ve been using BetterHelp for 2 years now. I have to say, It has been a solid, affordable, and practical resource for me to manage my mental health. I was able to fill out a short questionnaire that matched me with a therapist. I was able to select the areas I needed counseling in and could scroll through a list of therapists and choose for myself. I have really enjoyed that option!

BetterHelp honors my privacy by allowing me to unmatch or choose another therapist if I feel like it’s not a good fit. All of them have been very professional. Currently, I am working with Ryan Zelov and my counseling with him has been professional, consistent, and most important, has yielded results in my life.

Additionally, it has been a tool to help me work through many toxic thinking patterns that were keeping me stuck for many years. It’s been a blessing to have a professional counselor available via messaging too. My therapist is available via messaging and via a live session (which I schedule when I need to). There are tons of resources on the app, which I have gotten LOTS of use out of while at work. If I am struggling, I can excuse myself for a quick break and process things via a journal prompt. From there, I can choose to share the prompt with Ryan or keep it private. Additionally, he equips me with tools (like worksheets to help me identify “cognitive distortions” like over generalization and black and white thinking) that help me manage my mind and thought life.

I love BetterHelp and recommend it to everyone who wants to equip themselves with tools to manage their mental health!

Excellent resource when you need it

By Emily W., Cuenca, Ecuador, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp is a great and cost-effective resource when you need guidance in your life. There are licensed professionals from all over the country on the site. They will pair you with a therapist or you can choose your own. Additionally, you can do a free group therapy session once a week as well. There is the option to do phone, video, or chat for your sessions as well. I like that they make things flexible and easy, because when you’re feeling down and out, you need easy. Or at least I do. BetterHelp is helping me to gain some clarity and insight about a challenging time in my life, at an affordable price. Thank you.

Quality therapy, cost effective, and super convenient for a busy schedule!

By Jenny M., Troy, AL, Verified Reviewer

With my work schedule, I was needing therapy that would work well with non-business hours. BetterHelp provided me with a therapist that not only offers Friday evening therapy sessions but even weekends. In addition, I travel a lot for my job, so I needed a therapist that could either provide phone or video sessions. BetterHelp allows their therapists to connect with you over the phone or on video chat. I use the video chat feature, so it feels like I'm still in their office. For $360 a month, I'm provided access to my therapist by text messages at any time and a conference once a week. When I was seeing a therapist in person, it was costing $60 a session per week. However, I had to constantly use leave time or go on my lunch break. So, for a little extra a month, I can work my sessions in on my off time and avoid taking leave or sick time. For me, it is worth it.

Organized and adaptable

By Chelsea O., Ulsan, South Korea, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp is a wonderful platform that allows one looking for mental clarity to find the right therapist match. You can browse through a catalog of therapists to find an expert that fits your specific needs. The therapists are available for a live one-to-one session once per week and chatting any time. What is especially neat about this platform is the variety of services to clear your mind and gain new knowledge. You can write daily journals, join live informational sessions (included in membership), and the management team always replies very quickly with the utmost empathy. If you miss sessions due to “life,” they are very accommodating and will offer refunds or other options to extend your membership or give discounts. I really appreciate it. Thank you.

By Gavin M., Tallahassee, FL, Verified Reviewer

I was worried that I would be wasting my time and money but I was more comfortable with BetterHelp than going somewhere in person. You can message your therapist anytime on the message board, choose between a phone call or video call for sessions, and you can change your therapist at any time if you feel that the first pick wasn't right.
