Lipozene Review: Effectiveness, Clinical Research, Side Effects, Cost

By HighYa Research Team
Updated on: May 11, 2019

Lipozene is an “As Seen on TV” weight-loss supplement that utilizes a special type of fiber which it claims can make you feel full faster, eat less and, therefore, lose weight.

The fiber, called “konjac root,” has been used as a weight-loss aid in Japan for centuries, the site states, and is “one of the most studied ingredients for weight loss.”

The company behind Lipozene is Obesity Research Institute LLC (ORI). Our research turned up the fact that ORI is located in Carlsbad, CA. Also, in 2005, an investigative branch of the Better Business Bureau reprimanded ORI for claiming Lipozene helped millions of people and more than 20 million bottles sold.

At the time of publishing, Lipozene claimed that they’d sold more than 25 million bottles on one page and on another page claimed more than 30 million. We could not verify this fact.

In this review, we’ll talk about how to take Lipozene and how it works, side effects, what it costs, and how it compares to similar supplements. At the end of the review, we’ll tell you our research-based opinions about the supplement’s strengths and weaknesses.

How to Take Lipozene and How Its Ingredients Work

The dosage guidelines for Lipozene are simple. You take two capsules with at least 8 ounces of liquid around 30 minutes before each meal up to three times a day. This two-pill dose contains 1.5 grams of konjac root. Taking Lipozene three times a day means you take in 4.5 grams of konjac root.

This half-hour cushion allows the konjac root’s main component, a fiber called “glucomannan,” to expand in your stomach and fill some of the space before you start eating. According to ORI, the fiber particles can expand up to 200 times their normal size. Because of this, you’ll feel full faster after you start eating.

Since you’ll start eating less, in theory, you’ll reduce your calorie intake and start losing weight. On top of that, Lipozene has an app that will track your progress and remind you to take your capsules.

ORI says an eight-week study done with Lipozene revealed that “participants taking the active ingredient in Lipozene lost an average of 4.93 more pounds than those taking a placebo.”

They go on to say the 78 percent of the lost weight was fat, not water weight. Also, ORI didn’t require the participants to exercise and change their diet.

This fact is important because the site’s home page highlights three alleged Lipozene users who combined for an average weight loss of 17 pounds over 12 weeks. However, in the fine print, the site says that each of these three participants used the capsules in conjunction with exercise and diet. The fine print also notes these three subjects were paid to take the pills.

This tells us that implementing exercise and a good diet will help you lose weight quicker than if you used Lipozene without those lifestyle changes. As we pointed out earlier, taking Lipozene without pairing it with exercise and diet changes could result in 4.93 pounds more than those not taking the pill over an eight-week period.

Independent Lipozene Research and Side Effects

We consulted Consumer Lab’s research database to find out if there are any studies about konjac root’s effectiveness outside of what ORI provided. The site did a study on a similar product called “Skinny Fiber” that also uses konjac root.

Their conclusion was that taking four grams of glucomannan a day for eight weeks " did not result in a decrease of appetite or body weight compared to placebo.”

Consumer Lab went on to say that the main side effect of fiber pills like Lipozene is choking.

“The FDA warns that products containing glucomannan may pose a choking hazard (or cause intestinal blockage) if not taken with enough water to keep it moving along,” they noted.

Lipozene Pricing and Return Policy

For $59.95, you can purchase two bottles of Lipozene and get a bonus bottle of ORI’s MetaboUp PLUS, a supplement that supposedly boosts your metabolism and energy. Since each bottle of Lipozene contains 60 capsules, two bottles will last you 20 days.

Shipping is free but there is a non-refundable $1.35 processing fee.

The supplement comes with what ORI calls a “30-day money-back guarantee.” If you aren’t happy with how the supplement works, you can send it back to them provided you contact customer services at (888)220-8907 and get a return authorization number.

You’ll need to write this number on the box in which you ship the product back to ORI. Refunds will be for the original amount minus the $1.35 processing fee. Also, the return policy applies only to TV and internet purchases.

Autoship Warning

Lipozene’s fine print uses “subscription” language, which typically means that Lipozene will sign you up for recurring shipments (and charges) when you make your first purchase. We called them to clarify this.

The phone representative told us that ORI will send you a new shipment of Lipozene at the same price point and will continue to do so until you call them to cancel.

So, while they say their 30-day guarantee is your window for returning the product if you aren’t satisfied, it’s really the time you have to call in and cancel your “membership” to their Lipozene auto-shipments.

If you want to learn more, watch our video about similar auto-ship programs.

Pro tip: You’ll have to wait several minutes to connect with a customer service representative. When their automated phone service asks you to provide your payment information, don’t do anything. Wait until you’re connected with a real person.

Comparing Lipozene to Two Popular Konjac Root Supplements on Amazon

To give you an idea of how much or how little of a bargain you’re getting with Lipozene, we went to Amazon and took a look at the top-rated konjac root supplements. Here’s a chart comparing the two:

Lipozene Pure Naturals Konjac Root Nova Nutritions Konjac Root
Price $14.97 $17.99 $10.49
Daily dose of konjac root 4.5 grams 6 grams 6 grams
Number of servings per bottle 30 180 180
How long one bottle will last 10 days 60 days 60 days
Average Amazon rating 2.8 stars, 23 reviews 3.5 stars, 124 reviews 3.7 stars, 230 reviews

Based on our research, we found that the two competing capsules on Amazon seem to include the same ingredients, are made in the United States and have better customer reviews and pricing than Lipozene.

Price is an important factor in making a purchase, so here’s how much each supplement will cost over the course of 12 weeks, per each bottle’s dosage recommendations:

  • Lipozene: $149.75
  • Pure Naturals: $35.98
  • Nova Nutritions: $20.98

Considering that Nova Nutritions’ supplement gets better reviews than Pure Naturals and Lipozene and is cheaper, we think the data shows there’s a good chance you’ll be most satisfied with their product when compared to the other two.

Bottom Line: Our Thoughts About the Pros and Cons of Lipozene

The Lipozene website does a good job of talking about how konjac works and it’s a positive that they list research that backs up their claims that the supplement can help you lose weight.

Also, using fiber and other types of treatments to fill up your stomach so you don’t eat as much is a pretty common approach to weight loss.

However, Consumer Lab indicates that Lipozene’s claims may not be accurate, as their testing indicated that taking glucomannan didn’t cause any weight loss.

Also, keep in mind that the success stories listed on the Lipozene home page are people who combined Lipozene with diet and exercise changes.

Furthermore, we found two similar supplements on Amazon that included a higher dosage of glucomannan along and that, in one purchase, lasted three times as long as Lipozene.

We think that the evidence shows Lipozene may be effective when combined with exercise and diet but that, all things considered, their ingredients, customer reviews and pricing aren’t at the level of other supplements on Amazon.

    Worked great for me!

So, I read a lot of reviews that were negative, but mine is a POSITIVE ONE! I started taking Lipozene in the early part of the summer of last year, 2018. Let me just say when I started on my weight loss journey I weighed 660lbs. When I started on Lipozene I weighed 550lbs and now I weigh 390lbs, so I've lost a total of 160lbs with the Lipozene since the beginning of the summer of 2018. So, I've had great results with mine. I hope more people have good luck with theirs. In total, I've lost 270lbs and I weigh 390lbs now and still going to my goal. I've gotten a lot healthier and feel a lot better, so THANK YOU LIPOZENE! I get mine from Walmart each time I get mine.

On on March 26, 2019 at 11 am I placed my order with a customer service representative for Lipozene. On April 2, 2019 I received my order in the mail, 7 days I received 1 120-count bottle of Lipozene that is to help reduce weight and help reduce body fat, and 1 bottled of MetaboUP Plus that increases energy and helps increase metabolism.

So this morning I took two Lipozene with 12oz of water with two MetaboUP Plus, let’s see how it’s going to work for me. The reviews are across the board. Some say it works, but there are just as many people that say the product doesn’t work. So it’s day one on Lipozene, I’ll repost in a week. I’m looking to lose 30 pounds before July 3, 2019 for my 23rd wedding anniversary, wish me good luck.

    Does work but...

    • Wichita, KS,
    • Oct 18, 2014

This product worked great for me. I took it for about 3 months and lost 17 pounds. The only problem I started experiencing is hair loss. So I had to quit and was afraid I was going to go bald. OMG! It was great but I don't want to be skinny and then be bald and then have to find something to grow my hair back.

I bought a couple of bottles up the local Walmart in Arcadia, Florida and took some and it never helped me to lose the weight. Plus it gave sugar problems because it made my sugar go up, so I would love to have a full refund of my money.

    Garbage, buy a laxative instead!

    • Beecher, IL,

People years ago used laxatives to lose weight. This pill is no different except that it has extra vitamins in it. It does not curb your appetite, boost your energy level or magically burn belly fat. I work out at the gym 4 or 5 daya a week. This is not the solution. Glad I bought the buy one get one free deal at Walmart (bought 4 total) so I didn't get suckered into any automated billing system. A waste of 40 bucks but there are better energy supplements out there. Live and learn people and don't fall for the hype.
