Noom

By Jana C., Florida, Verified Reviewer

This app is a total scam. I recommend not using. Total ripoff. Kept charging me $99 even after I canceled. Then would only refund half. I never heard anything from a supposed coach. Do not use or pay for this app!

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Starts well then crashes and burns

By Rae Berwald, Michigan, Verified Reviewer

I signed up for four months. First two weeks were free. Lots of encouragement and participation. You can drop it, but once you're in for 14 days, your card is charged. After the first two weeks, I was in, and I saw the coaches start to not commit to their end of the deal. After two months, the program sort of ends and you get random stuff like "how did you sleep?" Instead of programs designed to help you change your patterns. I seldom even log in anymore. My "personal" weekly coach hasn't contacted me in almost a month. And 1200 calories a day can be pretty restrictive long term. It does focus on calorie density, which is great. But it's definitely not worth the money.

Unable to restart

By Jodi B., Texas, Verified Reviewer

While I really liked the program, they claim that you are unable to restart once you begin. After approximately two weeks on the program, I went through a very stressful time. I got behind on my article reading and felt overwhelmed. I contacted Noom through both my coach and their technical department. They basically told me, "too bad." Even though I'm paying the same amount, they said that they are unable to restart the program. What a shame. This is why I am giving them a bad review. It's a program that needs to be followed and kept up with. Once you get behind, it's possible to go back. If you do get behind, it is very difficult to get caught up. I'll go back to weight watchers where you can get the support that you need.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Good program, bad billing

By Christine B., Washington, DC, Verified Reviewer

It’s August 7, 2018, as I’m writing this, and I’ve been an active member of Noom for about a month and a half, having signed up for the two-week free trial on June 20th.

Positives: The psychology of the program really got under my skin and nudged me into changing some behaviors I had been previously very resistant to changing. I enjoyed learning new segments of health information every day on the app - something Weight Watchers did not provide a parallel for. Noom provides enough material to fill a book, in interactive small segments where you type in your own answers, take quizzes, and share with a group.

You also have a coach, who will ask every week about your goals for that week and how you’ll go about reaching them. The coach was kind and helpful, if a bit too "cheerleadery" for my own preference - I felt like I was dealing with a persona rather than a person. But that was still a positive overall.

Negatives: I don’t like Noom’s billing model, lack of account self-service options, and lack of telephone-based customer service. When you sign up for the two-week free trial, you’re on track to be billed $99 for two months when it ends, even though other options - like $120 for four months - are available within the app. The availability of the long-term options is not well explained. Customer service takes days to respond to inquiries. And you cannot change which credit card you use for your payment yourself. All this, plus you have to directly ask your coach in order to cancel. They are trying way too hard, in a fairly coercive model, to get $99 out of people signing up for free trials, at the expense of people liking the company and sticking with it voluntarily.

Better choices - don’t make the trial free. Just charge some amount that people could afford, like $9.99. And then don’t auto bill when it ends, instead, let people choose their payment package. Have people choose you, not feel like you’re trying to trick them. I would have signed up for the four-month membership or longer if this had been handled differently.

SCAM

By Jeri F., Pennsylvania, Verified Reviewer

Stay away from Noom!

I paid $1.00 for a trial and after three days realized it wasn't going to work for me and requested a cancellation. Impossible. They literally require you to jump through so many hoops that "Rebecca," who I suspect isn't a real person, can tell you that by now you've passed the 14-day period for a refund. Disgusting. Should be investigated.

Great, until you start your paid version

By Ingrid C., Ohio, Verified Reviewer

Does not deliver content as promised, coaching is non-existent. I ordered after the trial and never received exercise/meal plan that was purchased for $79. No contact from the coach after paying for a full month until I contacted Noom (a week is how long I waited), no group support as advertised - was not even added to a group. Noom says sorry, no offer to correct issues even when asked. Save your money, refunds will not be provided by Noom or Google Play.

Too bad as the program has great potential and I would have continued after the paid month was up had these issues been corrected. Instead, I got a sorry about your luck, here's how to cancel.

Needs improvement

By Leslie Miller, Georgia, Verified Reviewer

It really is not as personal as they describe. You do not have a coach or group to check in with as they say you will. No one to talk to and set up your goals with. You can track your food and weight daily and get great diet tips; you can do all of this with FREE online weight loss sites/apps. I would have paid the $149 for 6 months had I had all of the extra support they claim to have, but there was none.

Be sure to cancel your trial on time

By Renee G., Florida, Verified Reviewer

While I thought the content was well laid out and engaging, it didn't appeal to me as it was nothing new. Consequently, I did not use it. I had marked on my calendar for the 14th day to cancel (in case I forgot), and on the THIRTEENTH day, my account was drafted. I double checked with my bank account, and I had the days correct. There is NO way to call customer service, only email. And they make it clear in the automated response that they will not refund, only cancel the subscription moving forward.

So I was out $140 for something I did not use, and on a day I desperately needed the money. No compassion, this is a racket. Most companies would refund. This is not good company policy. I would not recommend.

Don't get what you pay for

By Gina S., Missouri, Verified Reviewer

I signed up for a trial period from Noom. I heard from the coach the first week, then after 12/17, I heard nothing until 12/24. Then they charged me on 12/23 for $99.00 without any reminder the trial was ending. I don't believe they are interested in helping people, only taking your money.

Do not join Noom, it's a scam

By Ann P., California, Verified Reviewer

So, I signed up for what I thought was a $59.99 charge for four months. Nope. I was charged that, and another $129.00 I never agreed to. I only had the service for less than a month. And I tried to contact customer service, but there really is no contact. They say that they canceled my subscription, after me emailing incessantly because there's no one to call.

But guess what? The charge is still there. They don't care about weight loss or helping people. They care about the almighty dollar, only. And good luck trying to get a hold of anybody.

Annoying

By Julie Z., Texas, Verified Reviewer

I've been using this app for 100 days and since day one I have had issues with it syncing with my Fitbit. Some say it has do with me having an iPhone, but you'd think they'd work the bugs out at some point. Secondly, I am not a fan of the writing style of the articles. When did the BuzzFeed lingo become the standard for how we communicate? It's pretty awful and it keeps me from reading any of the material at all, which defeats the purpose of my even using this. And as of today, the ability to log food seems to have disappeared. I'm not a social person, so not being able to opt out of the group messages is a bit annoying also. I don't know, I just don't feel like this is the right app for me personally.
