Long delay for course correction

By Kathryn B., Sacramento, CA, Verified Reviewer

I needed to make a course correction 4 months into my treatment as a gap had opened up between my two front teeth. The first replacement aligners did not fit and by the time I received the correct set, there was a four-month wait time. There were a few calls and emails and it never seemed my case was given any sort of priority given I was in mid-correction. I appreciated I didn't have to go to the dentist monthly, but am not sure if I would recommend. It will depend on how long it takes to get my first set of retainers as I ordered them a week before the recommended order date.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Very disappointing

By Yolanda B., Lake Elsinore, CA, Verified Reviewer

I was supposed to get a 6-month treatment of aligners and was only sent 5 months of aligners. I called the company on November 10th and spoke with a representative. I was told that it was going to take 3 to 4 weeks for me to receive my final set. Here we are well over the time limit and still no aligners. I have called several times and have been told they are waiting for my aligners to be shipped out and l will be sent an email. This is very frustrating. I was supposed to be completed with my treatment on December 5, 2019. I was asked to be in a wedding in January. This is one of the reasons I wanted to be finished my treatment by then. I followed the instructions of wearing my aligners to the letter. But this company dropped the ball. They only thing I’m being told is that they are having problems with their shipment. I haven’t gotten a date when the order might be shipped out. I would never recommend this company to anyone. I should have read more reviews on this company. Very disappointing.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Customer service makes this place terrible

By Charmaine H., North Carolina, Verified Reviewer

So firstly I went to a Smile Shop in Greenville, NC and they were amazing there. I was told it would take 3-4 weeks for my order to come in. They told me if I referred someone else they would get the same deal as me and I would get a gift card as long as they came in within the next two days, I said ok. I wanted to do this smile journey with my husband so he decided to go the next day. He did not receive his discounts at all, the only thing he received was a $25 gift card to their site that you have to pay shipping for to get these worthless smile products.

Fast forward 3-4 weeks I have not received my aligners. My husband who went to the same exact 3D shop had received his. So I called and they say we are backed up making aligners so it will now be 5-6 weeks easy to say after I have already paid you guys in full...right. I would like to cancel at this point because I hate dishonesty but I don’t because my husband and I are supposed to be doing this together so we wait and wait and they finally come weeks after his arrived.

We start the smile journey and my top aligners don’t fit on teeth 1-7 so I call them they say I have to talk to the dental team...ok, I talk to them, she says try and put on your second week and they are nowhere close to fitting. I say they don’t fit at all so she says ok, we will have to do a review she sends me by email, and as we are on the phone my husband is already taking the requested photos of my teeth with and without aligners while she has me on hold. We receive the email and do as directed. So in the meantime I keep wearing the aligners because everything fits except they don’t fit on 1-7 even though the lady told me not to continue the email she sent, said to continue so I did, they sent me two more emails in the week asking for the exact same photos that I have already sent, I never took any more, I just continue sending the exact same photos and on the third time they said it was right. You know they are just wasting my time at this point.

Now I finally receive an email back saying it’s been approved so I would have to drive another 45 minutes to the 3D Smile Shop or get putty and send back in so they can make me new aligners but now by that time I have already switched to new aligners because it was time and their paid fits on all my teeth unlike the first pair. I reply to the email and let them know this, asking what should I do. Do I go ahead with this or do they need to be redone. Of course no reply so I email again, no reply, and I email again and still no reply. So at this point I don’t know what to do. I am still on track with the aligners they sent but don’t know if I should be wearing and continuing or not. Right now I feel like I wasted a lot of money at Christmas time that could have gone elsewhere.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

No retainers after treatment

By Wendt S., Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Verified Reviewer

The treatment process went ok, I paid $2220 for a 6-month plan, by the end of the journey I got the email to advise to order the retainers to protect my teeth from shifting back. I followed the advice and ordered the retainer, the email said it would arrive in 2~3 weeks, now it’s 7 weeks, still no retainer. I have to wear the last set of aligners all this time and my teeth start shifting back. Contacted the company by phone and email, they gave the date for shipping, but nothing happened. Without the retainer, the whole process will be a waste of time and money.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Delighted customer

By Susan G., Kentucky, Verified Reviewer

I love this company. I tried another similar one and could never get my pics and impressions to pass muster. So I went to my local SmileDirectClub office and had the 3D scan. The office staff was very friendly and gave me all the information that I needed. My aligners were supposed to arrive in 9 weeks but actually got to my home in about 4 weeks. I'm on the third out of 10 aligners and am loving the results! I hate to hear people have had bad experiences because treatment has really been effective and easy for me. I will say that I consulted a local orthodontist to see if I was a good candidate for Invisalign first. She said that I was the ideal candidate. So instead of $6k, I paid $2k for a new smile!

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Love it

By Luna M., Tennessee, Verified Reviewer

I feel the need to write this since the only people that seem to leave reviews for this product are all angry. It's really sad. You should take into account the people that enjoy this service but don't care enough to review it. Angry people leave angry reviews because they think their opinion needs to be out there.

Anyway, I've never experienced any problems with my treatment. I had to get refinements once, but that was because my teeth weren't moving according to plan. Ever since then my teeth have been moving perfectly. As long as you practice protocol of only drinking water with them in and brushing immediately after eating, you'll never experience a risk for cavities. My teeth are whiter and cleaner than ever before after starting. I can't wait to see the full results once I'm finally finished.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Great program

By Hong P., Nebraska, Verified Reviewer

I am on the last aligners that I had purchased with SmileDirectClub. I just ordered my retainers so I think I can now give a review of the Club. Overall, great experience. Very friendly staff at both online and at their physical locations. I had a total of 2 mid-course corrects but still I am on-time to finish the course. I received my aligners in a timely manner; even when their notification system was way off and sometimes just completely wrong.

The only wish I have is for IPR (look it up if you don't know) to be an option to the plan. I could not find a dentist to do this for me because of insurance liability on their part, so I ended up doing IPR self - not suggested, but out of desperation.

Anyway, I would do it all over again, and I would only recommend this program to those who need minor changes. For me, I just have minor overcrowding at the bottom, and my top teeth were just fine.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

It was great until...

By Marika R., Seattle, WA, Verified Reviewer

After I had finished through my set of aligners, I felt my teeth needed a bit more of adjustment. I went in for a check-up at the local store and the bee aligners were on the way by the next two weeks. However, FedEx by no surprise (I don’t have trust with them from what I’ve experienced too many times) lost my box and I had to reorder my aligners. It was from then that made me wonder how this company is operating production. I waited for months and months inquiring for update probably every three weeks, but every time they say they will escalate to the production but so far it’s been three months and they are still not here. I don’t understand why since the first refinement aligners didn’t take more than two weeks to get shipped, and why now it’s taking three months. I have explained my situation that I will be moving abroad soon, but that doesn’t seem to be taken in consideration to the production side.

I would say support representatives over the phone are nice and trying the best, but not sure how much control they have to production. (BTW I do not recommend using chat...Javier who I talked through chat a couple of times is not willing to do much from what I could tell.)

I’ve was told now that they cannot promise to get my aligners by the time I leave the States but just to cross fingers.

My teeth are much better than before, but definitely not somewhere that I can quit the treatment. I guess you get what you pay for, but I regret that I had just gone to a dentist from the beginning since that’s what I probably have to do now. I say don’t take the chance. You’re just losing money.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Would not recommend

By Ann Marie D., Boston, MA, Verified Reviewer

My "journey" (as SmileDirectClub likes to call it) started out positively. After seeing their TV commercials for some time, I decided to check them out and made an appointment at a local Club to have my scan done. My bottom front teeth have been crooked since I was a kid, and I have developed a gap in the front on top.

The first thing I noticed when I walked into the office was that there was only one person, and no diplomas or certificates on the walls to indicate that anyone there was certified to do what they do. So my first question was "Is there an actual orthodontist somewhere in the background?" I was assured there was. The girl doing the scan assured me that she was a dental hygienist as well. I was skeptical, but went ahead with the scan. I don't know what her skill as a hygienist is, but I'll tell you one thing - she was a heck of a salesperson.

I paid the $1850 and went home excited to get started. My aligners arrived in a couple of weeks, and I began wearing them, I figured there would be a period of having to get used to having them in my mouth, kind of like breaking in a new pair of shoes. My gums, tongue, and especially the roof of my mouth (which felt like it was burned by hot pizza) were irritated by them, but I toughed it out. By the time I put the third set of aligners in, my mouth was so sore, I couldn't continue to wear them, I had to leave them out for a while for the sore spots to heal. It had become very uncomfortable to eat or to brush my teeth. A spot on my lower gums was rubbed so raw by these things that it took 3 weeks of rinsing with salt water for it to feel better.

I contacted SmileDirectClub and told them about the issues I was having. They agreed to send me a complete new set of aligners, starting at week one, and they credited me $200. Again, it took a couple of weeks for the new box to arrive. I was hesitant to put them in my mouth after the experience with the first aligners, so I waited a week before I even opened the box. I finally decided to give it another go and put the first set of aligners in late one night just before going to bed. After about twelve hours of having them in my mouth (including taking them out twice to eat), I couldn't stand it anymore. Once again, the roof of my mouth was so sore, again making it hard to eat and brush. I got in touch with SmileDirect for a second time to let them know I was having the same problems all over again, that the second set hadn't been made any better than the first ones, and that after two failed attempts, that I wanted my money back.

Both times, I was urged to file down any rough/sharp edges or use dental wax to pad the rough spots. I realize that $1850 might not be a lot of money to some people, but for me, it's a big chunk of change, and I don't feel that I should have to modify these aligners to get them to fit better - I should get smooth, comfortable aligners that fit without creating sore spots in my mouth.

They requested photos of my teeth and mouth both with the aligners in and without them, and other info in order to process my cancellation. I asked them why it is that there isn't a resource for people who are having problems with these things, why there isn't an actual doctor that I could go into an actual office to see, but I didn't get a response to that.

I've read reviews from others about poor customer service, and I would agree with that to some extent. The biggest problem I see, however, is the completely online process that has no backup plan to address issues. And the fact that they will do or say anything to get someone to remain a customer.

All in all, I would say that if you're thinking about straightening your teeth with this method, stay away from SmileDirectClub. You get what you pay for.

I think getting my money back will be a fight, but I'm ready to take them to small claims court if I have to, and definitely will file a claim with the BBB.

Good luck!

Company Response from Smile Direct Club

Hi Ann Marie, we appreciate you taking the time to leave us a review and share your experience. SmileDirectClub provides tele-dentistry, which means our fully licensed dentists and orthodontists oversee each case remotely. Eliminating the need for in-office visits is one way we're able to keep our costs up to 60% less than other treatments. Because of this, most communication with the doctor overseeing the case is done online and the best way for them to see what's going on is through pictures. When problems arise, we have customer care and dental teams available to help. We trim and buff all of our aligners, but if there are specific areas that are a cause of concern, we sometimes recommend that the customer trim and file this area to alleviate the issue. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to us at grinners@smiledirectclub.com. Best, Madison.

Nothing good to say about SmileDirect

By Sarah G., Houston, TX, Verified Reviewer

EVERY SINGLE experience/encounter I've had has been a headache!

I really wish I just gone to an actual dentist and got Invisalign again.

I got Invisalign years ago in high school and it was awesome, unfortunately, I moved out of my parent's house and ended up losing my retainers and I wasn't able to afford new ones so my teeth ended up going back to their original spot. Fast forward a few years and I really want to fix my teeth to where they were before. I don't make a large amount of money so I was trying to find the most affordable option. SmileDirectClub was advertised a lot on social media and it seemed like a great, easy, and affordable experience. I wish I never invested my hard-earned money into this company. BIGGEST REGRET. They took longer than they said it would to get my box. Once I received my box the aligners didn't fit so I had to reach out to them for them to send me another set. I don't know what is going on internally, but they ended up sending my box to a completely different client in a different state. I called and they tell me they have updated the address and fixed all of their issues, so I wait some more time...

I finally receive my aligners to see that there is a sharp piece of plastic on them both that looks like it didn't get taken off correctly? Definitely not supposed to be there, it was almost like an indent so once I tried to put the aligners in they cut my gums. I reached out to the company that I am paying thousands of dollars too, and their response was priceless. She let me know that I could just file them down or cut them myself. I didn't know that I was paying that much money to fix what they created for me. Unbelievable, so I cut them so I could continue the process. I have finished the entire process and throughout all of my struggles and complaints, I managed to get THREE FREE sets of retainers because of how many times they messed up my order. They tried to make it better by giving me free retainers as well as taking care of one of my payments because of how long the process was taking. I was counting on the original timeline they gave me to have my Invisalign finished before a very important trip, I was NOT ABLE TO BE FINISHED in the time frame they gave me! MONTHS after the actual time lime they gave me.

I will forever steer people clear of this company. I can't believe the amount of issues I had and the amount of repeating issues I had. Completely INSANE. Also, have fun with all the phone calls you will receive from them. Sometimes they call and just hang up...it just happened this morning. I don't understand how this company is still open. Also, one more thing they DON'T MENTION, the way they work is ONLY for straightening teeth. SO if you are worried about your bite, you are definitely wasting your time because the way SmileDirect works it only straightens teeth and DOES NOT FIX YOUR BITE or even pay attention to it through the process! That being said, you could have to do the process all over again once you're down, BUT with an actual professional. Save your time, sanity, and money.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Company Response from Smile Direct Club

Hi Sarah, we appreciate you taking the time to leave us a review and share your experience. We have experienced some shipping delays and have been working as hard as possible to get all delayed orders out. We are always working to improve our processes to ensure that this doesn't happen in the future. While we do trim and buff all aligners, we recommend that customers trim and file them if there are any specific areas that are causing discomfort. We treat mild to moderate crowding, spacing, and general alignment concerns and do not claim to address bite issues. We cannot guarantee that a customer's teeth will track as expected, which is why we're happy to look into a re-evaluation at no cost to the customer if they don't achieve the expected results in their treatment. We truly appreciate all of your feedback and are concerned to hear about your experience. We have attempted to reach out and connect through a few different channels, but please know that we're here for you if you would like to follow up. Best, Madison.
