I love BetterHelp!

By Jonathan B., Pittsburgh, PA, Verified Reviewer

I first heard of BetterHelp through the Mental Health Happy Hour Podcast in 2018. I found an LGBTQ+ counselor to help me work through sexual issues and we had a video call. Unfortunately, I was unable to continue my therapy after the introductory session. Two years later I tried again and was matched with Vincent P. He is certified in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and sessions with him have been AMAZING. As a side note, I enjoy having phone sessions instead of video sessions because I feel free from pressure to "perform." I was scared to continue and pay for sessions, however, Vinny's counseling was truly the cream of the crop so I took the chance. And when I signed up, I was able to receive financial assistance! Of all my subscriptions, BetterHelp is the one I would save! The accessibility and quality of service (from Vinny to the journaling feature to the email support) have kept me as a BetterHelp customer.

A great way to do counseling

By Amy S., Berwyn, IL, Verified Reviewer

I started with BetterHelp when a program I had just started and worked with for 2 weeks suddenly dropped me like a sack of potatoes so I searched for something to take over for it. I found BetterHelp. Listened to some YouTube reviews of the program that said it was bad. But I gave it a try. Eight months later I am still working with them and feeling better than ever. Once you find the perfect person it works great.

Length of Use: 6–12 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Easy communication, you can talk to your counselor even in between visits via a website messenger system

No need to leave home, you can do your sessions right from home by phone, video chat, or by messenger

You can only book one session at a time so your session dates and times may fluctuate unless your counselor makes sure to book you for specific times

A variety of ways to access therapy

By Amy M., Elkhart, IN, Verified Reviewer

I had established a relationship with a counselor several years ago and she moved out of the area. When she became connected to BetterHelp, I was able to reconnect with her and not start over with someone new. I like being able to connect in a variety of ways; video, calls, or messages. When my counselor has been on vacation, BetterHelp has extended my prescription so I don’t have to pay for unused weeks. The video connection has not been the best at times but may have more to do with my internet connection.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Variety of ways to communicate

Credit for counselor’s time off

Video connection not consistent

Surprised

By Ashley F., Oklahoma City, OK, Verified Reviewer

The price is more than fair so I got it but was skeptical. They matched me first with a therapist who didn’t offer video chat sessions which is what I prefer. It would be nice in the initial questions if they asked your preference on that. I had trouble with figuring out how to request a new therapist but emailed BetterHelp and they got back with me fairly quickly and resolved it. A couple of days later I was matched with my therapist and scheduled my first session. I was nervous it would be weird or awkward and my therapist got right into the session and made me comfortable. I was able to tell her things I wouldn’t typically tell other counselors in the first session. It was like FaceTiming my friend. She checks in on me and so does BetterHelp all the time. It’s honestly a great service and I do recommend it!

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Can’t catch COVID

No gas expense or traffic to fight

My therapist reminds me of me

Intro questionnaire should find out about counseling type preferences and deal breakers

Online customer support could frustrate certain people

If a therapist only offers text sessions I honestly don’t think BetterHelp should allow them

Forget BetterHelp

By CS Q., Los Angeles, CA, Verified Reviewer

My therapist, Dr. Dallas C, was clinically inexperienced and desperate for clients. Admits that she gets overloaded with messages and it’s hard to keep up. Rather than limiting the amount of new clients she accepts, she would rather make clients wait for days on end and will just give you a quick, informal response to your question or problem. She copy/pastes generic responses which shows that she could care less about who you are or what you’re going through. She forgets details about who you are and will end up doing things like pronouncing your name wrong (for example). She doesn’t remember much about you since she chooses to have so many clients at once to feed her ego. This is not real therapy! If you are keen on getting real help, do not use BetterHelp. You get what you pay for. I’ve been in real therapy before, and yes, it can be expensive, but it’s well worth the hefty price tag for the amount of personalized, undivided attention you will get. Investing in a quality therapist in REAL life is an investment in yourself. Also, telehealth therapy is nothing like being in a real room with the therapist. If you want to really do therapy, do it the right way. Pay up, show up, and forget BetterHelp.

So helpful during pandemic

By Bee V., American, Verified Reviewer

Excellent service to reliably use during the pandemic, and in general, having accessible therapy both physically and financially. It took a while to find the right therapist, but once I did it has been absolutely perfect. I recommend getting clear on what style or culture works best for you (I asked for someone from my home state) and seeking that kind of therapist vs using the lottery system. The staff will send you a list and match you with them.

Length of Use: 2+ years

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Accessible

Effective

Took a while to find the right fit, some therapists were awful

Difficulties with being charged before authorizing the charge, but the staff reversed the charge ASAP and were super patient with me

Complete incompetence

By Lucas L., Chicago, IL, Verified Reviewer

I optimistically scheduled my first therapy session through BetterHelp and was completely let down. My therapist failed to show up to the session, however, I went ahead and scheduled another to give the therapist the benefit of the doubt. She then failed to attend the second session as well. As a mental health professional, not showing up to a session (especially an initial session) is a show of complete incompetence. As someone struggling with my mental health, I am incredibly disheartened and sad that I spent a substantial amount of money to be entirely let down.

Excellent service

By Sabah S., New York, NY, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp is an excellent platform for online counseling/therapy. The site and the app are straightforward, making the focus on your interaction with your counselor (i.e. once you log in, you are brought directly to your 'chat room' with your counselor). Depending on the counselor, there are 3 services available: video session, phone session, and live chat session. I worked with two different counselors on BetterHelp, both of which I am very pleased with. I did find that the selection of therapists of color is a bit limited (although one of my two counselors was a therapist of color). I would highly recommend BetterHelp to anyone who is okay, and perhaps more comfortable, with counseling that is not in person.

An important step towards change in your life

By Gwen L., Caen, France, Verified Reviewer

I have subscribed to BetterHelp four times over the years. Once was to help navigate a transitional phase in my life, during which I had a wonderful counselor, a very good fit. I later returned to this counselor for support while implementing the changes I decided to make, but used weekly video sessions, instead of writing.

A few years later I had a crisis involving serious illness in the family and I felt devastated, but had to change counselors because I was not happy with the infrequent responses and apparent disinterest of the counselor selected for me by the site. My communication choices were not acknowledged and I had two very brief video sessions that were cut short, with the counselor looking at something else most of the time. The second counselor, whom I chose myself, was more helpful and seemed like a caring person, but only worked on certain days, so it wasn't really the 'unlimited' service I was paying for. She also went on holiday for a week without warning. I complained to BetterHelp in both cases and was given free weeks, so I would say that this company cares about its clients and is sound in its dealings. I ended up contacting a local crisis line and benefited from a free support service, where the counselors were there for me.

In my most recent experience, I only subscribed for a month, but it was a crisis situation and so the counseling was part of a wider support network that I had to build for myself. My counselor appeared perfectly competent and maintained a connection with me at intervals across the week, even over the weekend, but I was aware that this type of remote counseling is unsuitable on its own for crisis management.

On its own, BetterHelp is most beneficial where you are quite capable of implementing things and working things out in your life, but need a sounding board and to feel supported by someone outside your situation. I also think that it can be a vital part of identifying the agencies you need to access in a situation, for example, identifying when you are actually in a crisis and need to get immediate help where you are. BetterHelp can additionally form part of a wider network of support, which could include friends, a local community, family members, colleagues, a local church, etc. This would be the case in a complex and far-reaching problem that takes a lot of practical outworking.

Moreover, it's important to have a good fit in terms of the counselor selected. For example, having a counselor you feel heard by and who is interested in you, as well as someone whose communication preferences and frequency of response correspond to your needs. There is no 'one size fits all' in terms of counselors, and neither is this kind of remote counseling the same experience for everyone at all times.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

I could work things out by writing

I felt I was communicating with an expert

Privacy - I didn't have to go anywhere

Convenience - was trapped at home for various reasons, and so this service was accessible

Lack of synchronous response - gaps between communication

It can take longer to build a relationship with some counselors than others, I'm not sure how the site matches counselors to clients, but this could be better

Once you find a good therapist, it’s great

By Cris F., London, United Kingdom, Verified Reviewer

The backbone of BetterHelp are the therapists. The customer service is decent but not the best. In my experience, I was looking for a very specific type of therapist, with a particular background, and even while I scrolled the list that was available to me, almost all the therapists were not taking new clients despite being offered as options. I finally found a therapist who works well with me. And that’s been great. I only utilized the messaging service once when I was having a crisis and my therapist was immediately available which I deeply appreciate. But customer service takes a day or so to return messages, which is problematic if you have questions. So in essence, finding the right therapist was a bumpy process involving lots of time delays between customer service and I before they could confirm someone was available. But once you’re settled, it’s much smoother and pleasant between the therapist and you. I don’t know what it is like if you have issues with your therapist and then have to find a new one. I imagine that would be exhausting all over again.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Great way to get help on your own schedule!

By Halli L., Cincinnati, OH, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp is an excellent way to find a therapist. It is so much easier to fit therapy into your schedule when you can do it from home. I have done in-person therapy as well and I don't think you lose much of the experience doing it online. It is much more affordable as well. You can get a discount for paying for several months at once if you know you'll need longer-term support. Also, if your therapist isn't working out, you can easily get a new one at no cost to you. The only downside would be if you are unable to find a private place in your house to do therapy, but if that's not an issue, I couldn't recommend it more!

Counseling on my own time!

I usually have my sessions over the phone while sitting in bed, I feel safe and comfortable while talking through my emotions.

I like to decompress at the end of the day using the journal feature and I love that I can choose to share it (or not share it!) with my counselor with one easy button!

I wish there was an option to pay a little less and only schedule an appointment once every two weeks.
