Horrible

By Jacqui B. , Salt Lake City, UT

Meds only. According to my therapist who NEVER talked to me, or met with me, meds were the answer. I hope to NEVER work with a therapist like her. I hope to work with some that’s trying a holistic approach first and then meds.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Confused

By Andrew S. , Kings Beach, CA

Honestly, pretty bad. The first therapist I was assigned to made me feel like I wasn’t a priority. Like he had better things to do; with all the background noise and distractions, it was hard to focus. Then I read the bio of a person I felt confident in, but “better help” wouldn’t allow us to meet because of the states we live in. Overall, just very confused and unsatisfied with the “better help” I’ve been getting. Seems like a huge waste of money at this point.

Help

By Clayton W., Airdrie, Alberta, Canada, Verified Reviewer

So far it’s been nothing but disappointing. Psychiatrists saying they cannot help or not getting back to you. This is people's mental health they are playing with. You email them and they take forever to get back. It’s sad when you pay and you don’t get help. These are people who are sick, that are at their lowest in life, and all they want is home.

Therapists don’t show for appointments but BetterHelp still charges you anyway

By Ernest S., San Antonio, TX, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp and the therapists that utilize it are complete scam artists that have no interest in helping others, but would rather find creative ways to take their money while providing ZERO services. My therapist just didn’t show up to our appointment with no warning. Then late the next day finally responds with no real apology or explanation. Then you make BetterHelp aware of this, assuming that they would not approve of this behavior and provide a refund. But they refuse to provide a refund even though it is a FACT that my therapist just didn’t show up. So what am I being charged for?

Really was hoping to find a good experience but never got one

By Lita C. , Baton Rouge, LA

I received very disturbing questions and comments from my therapist. Upon expressing questions about the human condition, she responded, “What are you getting at with these questions? What is wrong with you?” In addition to this after I had already started crying from this weird line of questioning, she tried to convince me I had told her I hated the way I looked so much I didn’t want to appear on camera, none of which I had previously expressed to her.

World’s worst therapist

By Emily T., Kennebunk, ME, Verified Reviewer

I would like a refund, as BetterHelp counseling has been a horrible and stressful experience for me. My assigned therapist was rude, never showed up on time, or else never showed up at all. If Denine did show up, it was only by text, even though I requested video or phone conversation. She was uncaring and made a promise to write me a receipt for records and then 2 weeks later told me she was on vacation and would not be writing the receipt for me. She then told me to contact customer support in order to find a new therapist! I tried several times to schedule appointments with her, and she blew me off completely. She never scheduled them and ignored my requests for weekly as well as biweekly sessions. All of our conversations are documented.

This service has cost me hundreds of dollars, and I am walking away feeling much worse than I started, and now have to sort through finding a new therapist among other things. I was lied to, ignored, and ultimately pushed away rather than welcomed. From our first scheduled meeting that Denine missed, until our last interactions via messages on the forum 2 months later, this experience has been truly awful. No one should have to go through what Denine is putting me through. It’s giving therapy and telehealth a bad reputation.

I will not recommend it to literally anyone who values their own worth. This service is expensive and was worse than useless in the end - because it was damaging and hurtful. I am actually floored. The experience felt like a text exchange between myself and an absent-minded, disgruntled teenager. It was truly horrible. I’m wasting a lot of time trying to figure things out now that are connected to my horrible counseling experience with your employee.

Waste of money

By Rabab M. , Raleigh, NC

My therapist was trying to diagnose me, which wasn't his job and he was a bit condescending. That was Dr. Elliot Sanchez. He thought I was faking my Autism. So I switched to Talia Scott. Talia is better but she's canceled two weekly sessions on me already and I'm not getting what I paid for. My last session was supposed to be tonight and that was canceled. So I'm paying for a service that I'm not getting. Very disappointed.

Absolutely awful

By Adrian K., Los Angeles, CA, Verified Reviewer

The BetterHelp platform is a scam. I doubt a lot of these therapists have the proper licenses to be delivering therapy. My therapist barely listened to me during my session and actively encouraged me to do harmful things. I am now more anxious, depressed, and unwell than I ever have been. The platform glitches a lot and will kick you off your call or not even start them. This platform is horrifying.

Highly unprofessional and wasting my time and money

By Rebecca C., Blue Ridge, GA, Verified Reviewer

This was an awful first experience.

The first session she didn’t show up. I waited 15 minutes for her to no-show. The scheduled time was 7 am and she didn’t show up but rather text me at 7:11 saying that the video session wasn’t going to happen and that she sent that message to others but waited past the last minute to me when she had days to contact me.

The second time was scheduled at 10 and I waited 15 minutes again for her to not show up. I moved my stuff around to match the scheduled time for this in return.

This is highly unprofessional. Especially given I paid for a month and 2 of the weeks were wasted.

It's not good

By Jennifer W., Online, Verified Reviewer

I had a counselor who was helping me through some rough spots. I started having physical symptoms related to emotional trauma and was immediately dumped by the counselor. She contacted me and told me that her camera wasn't turned on and that she didn't see me. (She didn't want to see me). She went on to tell me to find another counselor. At a vulnerable point, she dumped me before I could even find another counselor.

I was treated awfully by my therapist

By Kim S., Pennsylvania, Verified Reviewer

My therapist Angela M. was 40 minutes late for my very 1st session. My 2nd session was good. My 3rd session she was over an hour late. She rescheduled the 3rd session for later that day at 6 pm. I waited for another hour and she never showed up. I messaged her under urgent while I was waiting. She never replied back.

A week later, I had my 4th session with her and she was on time and yelled at me for messaging her under urgent. She said for me to get another therapist and she wouldn’t let me speak. When I tried to tell her that she had an appointment with me that she rescheduled because she was too busy for my original appointment with her she hung up on me before I could say one word.

I couldn’t believe that she hung up on me. I can’t believe that I paid for this. I’m not sure if she never read my messages and completely forgot she rescheduled our appointment. I have no idea because she hung up on me and I never got to speak.

Total waste of time and money

By John O., Charlotte, NC, Verified Reviewer

They need to be more specific about their therapists. She wasted over a month of my time. I was very clear about what I wanted to accomplish and had to wait 2 weeks for an appointment (oh, and the only time she sees clients are on Friday nights which I wasn’t told until I met with her on the first appt 3 weeks later because she canceled my first appointment!). Then we agree to do therapy in the way that I clearly stated upfront and then a month and a week later she tells me that I should change therapists. Total BS and a total waste of my time and money!

Amateur therapists are going to cause suicide

By L W., San Francisco, CA, Verified Reviewer

I want to report my therapist. I am a patient seeking help and advice for my depression, lack of confidence, and trust issues, and she just made it WORSE. She spent the session telling me to set boundaries and then when I tried to set one little boundary with her, she flips on me and says I’m aggressive and should find another therapist? This platform is going to cause worse mental health and drive someone suffering to suicide one day, if not already. I am extremely upset and don’t know if I can ever open up to a therapist ever again to get the help I need.

Vickie L is a scam therapist

By Mohamed Z., Virginia, Verified Reviewer

I’ve had one of my worst experiences with Vickie L as I expressed my emotions and secrets with her that have been bothering me throughout my life, and after my second session, I was completely ignored….ghosted like we have not been talking, or like she does not know me. I have no clue what to do since I have paid $300 for 3 sessions and now I feel like I’m being ripped off and roped for my money. I’m not sure if Vickie is a therapist or if she’s here to make friends for fun.

Great therapist, horrible platform

By Jared N., North Carolina, Verified Reviewer

I found a wonderful therapist but ultimately left because of their terrible customer service, pricing, and billing policies that make using their platform a huge pain in the behind.

Some details that are not disclosed until after you sign up and start working with your therapist (and getting billed in advance):

• BetterHelp will bill you every four weeks, regardless of how many sessions you are able to schedule during that 4-week period.

• It is then your responsibility every month to reconcile your BetterHelp invoice against the number of sessions you were able to book.

• It is also your responsibility to identify any discrepancies (if, for example, I or my therapist take a vacation and are unable to meet one week) and to then reach out to BetterHelp to explicitly request a “credit” for the sessions(s) that I was erroneously charged for.

• If you do not perform this reconciliation and also manually follow up in email with BetterHelp, you will continue to be overcharged for any sessions you are not able to schedule in a given month.

• While you will be charged in advance for four sessions per month, regardless of how many you are actually able to schedule, BetterHelp will not refund you for any sessions for which you are charged but unable to schedule. Instead, BetterHelp will issue a credit that pushes out the date on which you will then be charged, again, in advance for the next four monthly sessions.

Additionally, if you have any further issues regarding BetterHelp’s billing practices, your only recourse is to communicate via email. There is no telephone number listed anywhere that I could find on BetterHelp’s website, and the phone number that is listed on my invoice from BetterHelp (only available after I have signed up and incurred my first month’s bill) only routes to an offshore contact center. Calling this number connects you to an answering service where I am advised that they can only take a message and that I should expect to hear back in “1 to 2 business days”.

BetterHelp also raised my rates 25% after the first two months. When I reached out to their customer service (again, only through email — they will no speak with any subscribers), I was informed that my initial pricing apparently reflected some "discount" that was never disclosed, so the price increase was just the realignment to their "standard" pricing.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Found a great therapist

Horrible customer care

Terrible subscription model that turns you into an accountant every month to reconcile your bills and chase BetterHelp for any erroneous charges

Now more expensive then every other platform available

They have a trick to steal your money

By Shiran Cohen, Israel, Verified Reviewer

They give you a one-week trial and ask for credit card. They specify that it's to "make sure you are serious about trying the product" and that they won't charge you.

I didn't try the product much since I didn't have time this week (and I told that to my trial counselor!). After my trial was over, they went ahead and charged me $180 without my permission (thieves, no less). Luckily I used Paypal, so I was able to report the deal as unauthorized and they refunded me.

This is a lame method, and the credibility of this service (regardless of professional value) is poor. Not everyone is as stubborn as me, and I believe people are getting their money stolen like this by them a lot.

Not real help

By Hsien Sin, Verified Reviewer

I came upon BetterHelp.

BetterHelp is about business. Clean and simple.

The client is not a priority. You are just pushed around and the counselors want to finish fast and do the minimum to get a good rating, while you want to be heard and your issues sorted.

Do NOT bother. Get a proper therapist who is well recommended by someone you know outside of BetterHelp.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Not a safe place for therapy

By Crystal, Verified Reviewer

Initially, I thought BetterHelp was good. The counselor definitely was well trained, but they were new to the platform when I started and much more available. Quite quickly, we ran into technical issues and also the time to respond got longer, I felt they were not reading my messages very carefully, and it became hard to schedule sessions. The follow up was not good for the sessions. In the end, I discontinued as a deadline loomed for payment and the counselor did not reply. They then got in touch, I tried it again, and in the first session back together with my trust still a bit fragile, they decided online therapy was not correct for me. I found this to be a very unprofessional way to discontinue therapy.

I then signed out of the platform, but they would anyway have discontinued my account. I found this to be both unprofessional and unkind, allowing a person to open up and then be shut down and left alone. In addition, they promised unlimited contact, but in practice, it is quite limited.

I would say be very careful with this service, as it may not be a safe place for your inner work. I would recommend that the therapist take on less people, so they can be less stressed and have more time. Also, if for some reason the therapy is discontinued, that there is a personal follow up not just a termination of the contract.

I am ok, but it could leave someone in a very bad space, and I did feel a bit abandoned as I had opened up emotionally.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Not so good

By S K., Texas, Verified Reviewer

I filled out everything and I was completely honest. The entire idea of my application, was yes, I did need help and I have a terrible state of mind when it comes to anything, (to be honest). Using BetterHelp, I hoped I could finally talk to someone about how I feel and what I'm going through but once they emailed me and told me "BetterHelp will not help you," I felt more hopeless than in the start. It kind of broke my heart, to be honest.
