If you’ve ever dreamed of having magazine-ready, pearlescent skin at the touch of a button, Luminess Air’s at-home makeup application airbrushing kit might pique your interest.

The system promises simple setup, easy maintenance and smooth, stunning results for a one-time cost that’s on par with a spa-day package, but with a better-lasting glow.

What’s Airbrushing?

The airbrushing method of applying foundation has been popular for professional artists working in film, theater, and even special events for several decades, and is most-loved for delivering superior, blendable coverage, despite using a minimal amount of product.

It works on the same principle as spray-paint (which is actually how the method was invented! You know, long ago before they cared about stuff like dying from toxins.)

If you haven’t ever seen airbrushing in action, the best way to imagine how it works is to compare painting a wall with a brush or sponge roller, which yields thick coats of paint and uneven application, to the fine mist and even coverage you get from spray-on methods.

Each airbrushing system uses a small, pen-sized tool that holds the foundation in a small reservoir and gently sprays it on the skin in a spray-dot pattern, which eliminates any visible brush strokes and results in a totally natural look (providing your foundation color is a good match.)

Luminess Air Everyday System – What to Expect

This is the Luminess Air “basic kit” (not their pro version). It promises a quick and simple learning curve, and to provide buyers with everything they need to get started applying airbrushed makeup, including:

  • Compressor, stylus & nozzle
  • Two .55 oz foundations
  • Blush
  • Bronzer
  • Glow
  • Primer / Moisturizer

To order a kit, you first have to select your skin shade from five groups. The kit will then come with two different foundation shades that you can mix to achieve a natural look. Luminess offers a color match service to those who have a difficult time choosing; simply upload a recent picture and submit it through their site in order to receive suggestions for your best fit.

The Luminess site also offers a bounty of “How To” videos that walk users through everything from their first time using the device, to basic application tips and advice from professionals, as well as suggestions for mature skin.

The foundation used with Luminess Air is promoted as oil-free and great for sensitive skin. Luminess claims applying makeup with their device has the following benefits as well:

  • A delicate and flawless finish that feels like you’re not wearing makeup, with minimized wrinkles and fine lines

  • Hygienic, since your hands or brushes never touch your face

  • Light to maximum coverage that delivers the appearance of younger skin, with a reduced look of blemishes, age spots, redness, large pores, and acne

  • Great for use on the face and body

Setting up the device is as simple as plugging it in, depositing foundation in the stylus’s reservoir, and pulling back a lever to begin an application.

Cleaning is required after every use to avoid gunking up the system and is accomplished by placing a few drops of water into the reservoir, and then spraying the device onto a cloth until all remaining product has been pushed through the nozzle and the spray runs clear.

Luminess Air Cost

The Luminess Air Everyday system costs $199 and is available in the website’s Online Shop section. Additionally, foundation refills cost between $18 and $40, depending on the line you choose.

However, Luminess Air offers multiple models and packaged kits, and many buyers report feeling tricked or confused by the pricing scheme offered on the Luminess home page.

It’s worth noting that the site appears to offer users an upgraded kit for a 30-day trial for $19.95, however in very fine print this also appears:

“Then after 30 days when you love Luminess, it’s yours for only 5 easy monthly payments of fifty-nine dollars and ninety-nine cents when you order today!”

That is a whopping $299! And it’s unclear whether or not the initial $19.95 fee to “try” their system is deducted from your total cost.

The Luminess Air return policy promises that dissatisfied buyers can return it for a full refund within 30 days of delivery, minus shipping and handling, as well as an “initial trial cost” that isn’t fully explained in their terms.

To return a Luminess Air, the device must be thoroughly cleaned and not show any wear and tear. Returns must also be authorized by customer service before they may be sent in.

A one-year manufacturer's warranty does cover buyers if their Luminess Air breaks, but is considered void if any non-Luminess brand makeup is used.

What Are Reviewers Saying About the Luminess Air?

Luminess Air has over 300 registered complaints on the site PissedConsumer.com alone, many of which reference:

  • Difficulty returning the product and being charged the full amount
  • Negative customer service experiences
  • Not allowed to return a device that had been used
  • Unclear pricing
  • Unreasonably long shipping times (up to 4 weeks)

Unhappy buyers have also turned to Yelp (editor’s note: the Yelp page has since bee removed), giving Luminess Air an overall rating of 1.2 out of 5 stars. Complaints include more mentions of poor customer service and potentially shady pricing:

“It's been more than 4 weeks since I've placed my order with the promise of receiving it before the holidays. Now 2 days before Christmas, several hours on hold, several threatening emails, and a dispute with my bank later, my order has finally shipped. It is expected to come January 2nd. More than 6 weeks after my original order.”

“The advertisement makes it seem like you can get the machine and makeup kit for $20.00. That may be unrealistically cheap, but they seem to promise that. Once you are on the phone they try to tell you it's $300.00. But they just don't tell you that, they try to go through this hokey spiel about easy payments and how they can make lower payments for you.”

That’s Not to Say There Aren’t Positive Luminess Air Reviews

If you’re searching for folks who have nice things to say about the Luminess Air, you don’t have to look too far – YouTube is full of tutorials where bloggers and home-beauty-buffs show their prowess with the device, although some of these are paid endorsements.

Pros and Cons of the Luminess Airbrush Makeup System

The brand lives up to its promise of providing easy-to-use, professional-quality makeup and tools in its airbrush makeup system. You can choose from a wide range of makeup colors available, so it’s stress-free to find the right color range for you.

Perhaps the only concern that buyers have expressed about this product is the customer support and confusing pricing plans – both of which need some improvement.

But if you’re patient enough to wait for shipping and understand what the final cost is, you might be very happy with this product.

The Verdict

Overall, the Luminess Air airbrush makeup system is priced similarly to others on the market. With their complete range of makeup, you can create a natural look that appears flawless with minimal practice.

But airbrushing kits aren’t cheap! Since there are quite a few options on the market, potential buyers interested in learning more might do best comparing a few models and brands before purchasing one.

When doing this, be sure to compare all the parts included in your kit. Also, consider the products you’ll have to use, and whether or not they meet your skin’s needs.

  • A big scam!

My girlfriend did not like the product and we got the first delivery

of addition product. I called and canceled the account and got a return address for the last delivery.

I returned the product by mail.

I thought that this would be the end of the story. NOT. I find out they charged my account for two additional payments after I canceled. I call them and they told me that they have no record of my call or cancellation and they never received the return.

SCAM. Greedy liars. I am going to make as much noise as possible so that fewer people get ripped off.

I ordered before looking at the reviews and regretted it. I ordered it for $19.99 not realizing it would be another 8 dollars in shipping plus 5 payments, making it a total of just under 330.00. If you buy an air brush from Walmart and just buy the makeup, you are much better off. They say less is more but it took way more than eight drops to cover my face. I have some slight discoloration but even three cups of 8 drops wasn't enough. Another thing, even after the makeup dried it didn't feel good. It felt tacky. I don't know if that's because I didn't use to sealer which was not included. Do your research. The Dinair is cheaper at 199.00 and they have a lot more products like eye shadow, eyeliner and hair color. They also have stencils. There are other air brushes for 99 dollars with other brands. Check Youtube for tutorials from other brands and even how to use airbrush other than the cosmetic brands.

Here is an update to my previous paragraph. I thought maybe I missed something so I looked back through their site and low and behold, found where I could actually upload a picture of myself and a "professional" would help figure out how to color match my skin. Yay! So I sent these embarrassing pics of myself with no makeup, whatever, and you know what I got back from the "professional?" One sentence: "I recommend you choose our product line for fair skin." Wow, thank God that after 52 years of blond hair, blue eyes and 100 million-billion SPF sunscreen I finally found a "professional" to tell me to choose shades designed for fair skin.

Ladies remember, the women in the videos are not trying to do it themselves, you know because of the one gal who says "IF I can get these results I'm definitely GOING TO TRY THIS AT HOME." They are having real professionals do it for them for the commercial. They are not doing it themselves.

    Don't...just don't

Ok, if you're still going to get this, make sure you fill out the warranty registration as soon as it arrives because you might lose your paperwork and they insist on you taking a picture of it and uploading it to them as proof that you purchased their item. I simply don't understand that. Don't they keep records of the fact that they took money out of my bank account and shipped me their product? Why do I have to prove that I bought it?

My first system, the Air Compressor, went out. My second system, the Stylus, won't spray worth a crud. It takes 20 minutes to get through 4 drops of makeup, and that's not enough coverage, so I have to keep doing more. It takes me 10 times longer to do my makeup with this than regular makeup, and I'm never as satisfied.

The perfect color match is non-existent. It just doesn't happen no matter what combination I use. The translucent powder turns me orange and looks caked, and I don't put on that much.

The instructional videos are very vague and generic. They don't give enough information about which product to use with which, like Eraser, Enhancer, Porcelain, Boost-it, and X-out.

    (read moreread less...)

  • Scam, fraud, unethical company!

I called in late one night after seeing an infomercial and thought I was getting something really neat for $34.99. Little did I know that when I received it, I would continue to be billed for a system costing over $300.00.

They also started sending me additional makeup and deducting money from my account unauthorized. I tried to cancel prior to the 30-day so-called "money back guarantee" and to return everything (which was still unopened), and all I could do is get a response from a so-called "stylist" by text. By that time they had deducted three payments of $78, plus payments for makeup that kept getting shipped for $34.99.

I went to my bank to dispute this. My bank originally gave me back the money. I had to pay to ship the machine and products back, and when it was all said and done, my bank ended up re-charging me for the reimbursement because they lied and stated that I went online to order and the website states the process and info about the payments! Oh, and by the way, they charged me a $75.00 restocking fee for returning it! So now I'm frustrated, out over $300.00, and I am sure I am just one of many like this. This is a sick, unethical company.

P.S. The only reason my bank allowed the charges is because of specific laws and regulations they have to meet, and apparently this company has found the loophole in becoming an expert in fraud.

  • This is a complete rip off!

    Warning, warning, warning!

I ordered this on a Monday night and was told that it was a 30-day money back guarantee, along with a bunch of free stuff. I got it two weeks later and all I did was open the box to see what was in it, and I decided not to even use it because it reminded me of a car painter's spray gun. I never used one thing in the box.

It was during the Thanksgiving Day week, so I held off trying to send it back. But, when I called them to get the address to send it back, I was told that I wouldn't get my money back. I would only get my money back if I didn't return it in 30 days, which would have been $150 if I decided to pay for it (for the machine). If I wanted to return the item, it was less the $39.95, and that I would have to pay for the return shipping as well. If you used it and kept it, you would be charged over $150 for it, plus the $29.95 (so much for the 30-day guarantee).

When I sent it back, not only was I out the $29.95 for the so-called 30-day guarantee, but I had to spend another $10 for shipping to send it back. So I'm out the $39.95, and they got the whole thing back (I got nothing in return). And I never used any of it at all.

Stay away from this junk. This is the biggest scam I've ever seen.

  • Total rip-off. Would give zero stars if I could

I took forever to receive the product but didn't take them long to start deducting $400 from my account.

I took 3-4 of the little cups to apply makeup. It came out so fast that I couldn't move the wand fast enough to get a decent coverage. Customer service was so rude to me because they thought I should like the product and told me that it was my fault, not the product's that it didn't work as they said it would.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Luminess, I suggest you get your act together or your company will fold. Read all these complaints. Scammers! Blatant lies on your pricing advertised. Ridiculous shipping delays. Terrible customer service. Good hell, time for new ownership with an ounce of pride.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

  • Fraud

If you like a product that falls apart in first use and you like to be totally misled on product pricing, then this product is for you.

In the advertisement, it showed a special of $49.00 that included the airbrush system and some product. I was not aware that they were going to charge my card every 15 days of added charges. In one month and seven days, I was charged $245.12. CRAZY!

I never write reviews, but this just gets on my last nerve. After calling and complaining I am returning this crappy product for a full refund. I hope that goes without a blemish. If all goes well, I will credit Anna with good customer service. However, I will be returning the product tomorrow and won't know if they actually credited my account for awhile.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I ordered The Complete Stylus Kit and liquid makeup. The kit shows items included. However, the items arrived missing all the parts, leaving this purchase useless.

I called customer service who refused to help or acknowledge issues. I spoke to Laura. She transfers me to after attempts to return are refused. No one answers and I'm disconnected.

Yet another online ripoff with false advertising and no recourse for the consumer to receive what was paid for.

Beware! Save your money, time and aggravation. Avoid frustration and disappointment and never purchase anything from this company.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

  • Ripoff

I was going to order the TV offer which claimed it was $19.95 plus shipping and handling with a promo code, "TRYSILK." There was no place for the promo code, and at the end, the total was over $70.00. I DID NOT go to check out!

Do they really need to try and rip people off?

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

  • Total rip off company

I ordered the product for their 30-day trial. It cost $19.99 plus shipping. When I received the product, the wand was defective and wouldn't spray. It took three days to get through to someone to help me. Another one was sent, and it took one week to get to me. It didn't work either!

I called and the rep wouldn't listen when I told her I was totally annoyed with the product and I wanted to send it back. She kept offering free items. I've had enough of their free items. I finally got the return number and was told, it must be sent by ground and insured or I'd be responsible for any damage. It also had to be returned by the end of my trial period, even though, I had to wait another week for a new wand.

Don't order from these people. They are truly a bunch of crooks.
