A bit of a hassle

By Amy Kavulish, Phoenix, AZ, Verified Reviewer

Carvana has pretty much any toy you could want...for about $2k over the standard list price. At least they ship for free. It's a good idea but the company is excruciatingly unorganized (many people complain about late deliveries, no contact, and no registration). This was enough to scare me off from buying a vehicle from them, but I did sell them mine.

They gave me a very fair price for it and did come pick it up, but the weeks before were not worth the hassle. Various 'computer glitches.' I had gone 100% through the process of purchasing a vehicle from them only to be called and told the vehicle had already been sold days ago. And this was after they had already hit my credit and applied me for a loan, and NO ONE will return your phone calls, even when they promise they will. Once I logged into my account to see, to my horror, that my account was on the final step to purchasing a $40k Chevy Tahoe, which is never a vehicle I even looked at!

Various emails asking me to re-verify information for the car I sold to them and telling me to accept my offer even though I had done so numerous times. Weeks after they took my car away, I am still getting emails asking if I am still interested in selling it to them. Get it together! Also, convenient that they don't actually allow customers to post reviews on their website...

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Horrible customer service and paying for a car I cannot drive!

By Jessica Reilly, Hartford, CT, Verified Reviewer

My initial purchasing experience with Carvana was wonderful. Financing was right and fair, delivery was on time, and the total process went very well.

The car arrived without a license plate, even though over the phone, I was told it would arrive with a plate. I figured it would be as seamless as the dealer issuing plates. I called and then had to wait weeks to be issued a temporary plate that expired shortly. The temp plate expired, and I have been unable to drive my care that I bought in DECEMBER since JANUARY 15th.

They provided me a MOUNTAIN of paperwork that had to be all notarized. I got it all together after having to go to many different places including standing in line at the DMV for three hours, sent it back, and was told that processing takes 4-8 weeks and THEN I'd have to wait 30-40 days for the plates to arrive after processing.

After all is said and done, I have been PAYING for a car that I have not been able to drive AT ALL as it is sitting in my driveway collecting dust. The 100-day warranty has expired before I even got to drive the car for an extended time. I paid extra for that and the registration fees and I nothing to even show for it.

So, be careful. They will give you the runaround, you will deal with horrible customer service after they make their sale, and you likely won't be on the road as soon as promised.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Company Response from Carvana

Apr 16, 2018

Thank you for sharing your experience with Carvana. We are saddened to hear that it has been less than incredible for you thus far, and we hope to redeem that moving forward. I took the liberty of looking into your situation regarding your registration, and I do see that there has been a delay. It looks like we emailed you a temporary operating plate back on 12/2/17 and mailed your paperwork the day prior.

Temporary operating plates are only good for 45 days in most states, this is why we strongly advise our customers, who are outside of our local markets to complete their paperwork as soon as possible. I see that we reached out to you requesting your paperwork back to avoid delays, however, we did not receive the paperwork back until 3/21/18. This surpassed the good-through date of your operating plate which prevented you from being able to drive your vehicle and utilize your warranty, therefore causing the delay in your registration.

We are extremely apologetic for any miscommunication that this has impacted your experience with us, and are hopeful to restore that moving forward. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us at 1-800-333-4554.

So far it has been the best!

By Stephen S, Orlando, FL, Verified Reviewer

I have been following and looking at Carvana's site for about two years. I finally pulled the trigger and I couldn't be happier.

I have bought cars sight unseen on eBay before, in person via Craigslist, used car dealerships, new car dealerships, etc. I can't really find a single thing that a non-Jeep dealer would have caught, and that's if it was even caught at a Jeep dealership. The soft top was put up improperly, I fixed it within 10 minutes (this is my 4th Wrangler since 2010). There was definitely some mud and water inside the jeep at some point, and things like the emergency jack and lug wrench were rusted horribly and completely unusable, but they were a useless dead weight on the Wranglers in the first place.

Ok, so the 2015 JKUR (JK Unlimited Rubicon) was $36k and change out the door with 22k miles on it. Its original sticker was $42,500. It had a newer aftermarket Bestop soft top, which is a nice upgrade, heated seats with cloth interior, which is actually quite rare (didn't want leather), 4.10 gears, which were an option in 2015, Nav, Sat, HDD 730n factory head unit, Alpine upgrade sound system, and remote start among other things. This was an oddly perfectly equipped model that would have cost $50k to buy a new 2017 and $52,500 for a new 2018. All things considered, it was in expected condition. If it hadn't been dirty or wet at some point in 3 years, I would actually be curious why, LOL.

Similarly, buying a basic BMW 325i or similar daily commute vehicle like a Honda Civic for the younger crowd, you expect the usual chips and nearly invisible (from 5 feet) dings and "scratches" in the clear coat, basic surface rust on exposed unpainted metal bits, etc. If I was insisting on perfection, I would have spent the money on new, LOL.

The bad that I knew about before delivery and had no issue at all with.

- Mismatched tire brands with similar tread pattern and same size 2 matching pairs front and back.

- Soft top oddly crooked, it was a twisted and looped strap on the top frame and incorrectly zipped/velcro'd window.

- Fuel door broken/beat up (dumb dealer installed/aftermarket option).

- Rusty bolts, skid plates, and such from living in the snow/salt belt part of its life.

What I found after delivery:

- Door removal bolts were in their holder in the rear, meaning they weren't securing the doors on the Jeep, LOL. Ehh 10 minutes, some anti seize, and a t50 torx driver and they are back where they go.

- Plastic stick on rocker "guards" looked way better in the pictures, so I removed them carefully to inspect the rockers for damage, none found aside from some paint scuffs from a prior owner's boots. To be expected honestly. The guards have stayed off as they only accelerate rust on the rockers.

- One rock rash scratch on the passenger side rear shock absorber tube with some rather heavy rust on it, no worries it’s all getting replaced anyway when the Jeep gets a 4" lift down the road.

- As stated above, there was some mud and water inside the Jeep at some point, and things like the emergency jack and lug wrench were rusty and unusable, but the compartment and so on throughout the Jeep's interior and exterior have nothing more than a light coating of surface rust/oxidation on bare metal and no actual "rust" per any sane person's definition. Literally, nothing out of the ordinary, and no rash from offroading hold some fender scuffs and light "forest pinstriping" of a few areas. It has likely seen about 100 miles of light/moderate offroading and mud compared to its stock capabilities, which are much higher than it was seemingly subjected to. Just for reference, two days in Ocala National Forest will get you 100 miles of offroading to this extent.

- Two wheels damaged during what I am assuming was a removal of wheel locks that the prior owner likely didn't include the key for. This is my only legitimate actual complaint/disappointment all in all. While I will be replacing the factory wheels, it detracts from the resale price by about $300 with them being damaged.

- I do think their detailing leaves a lot to be desired but is better than most; there is carpet torn around the seat brackets, likely from removal on the trail to get to the drain plugs, dirt still under the carpet here and there, mud/water stains on the sides of the seats from wheeling with the doors off, etc. It can all be rectified with a little time and minor money for dish soap and some water, maybe a new interior brush since mine is old and falling apart, LOL.

The engine is well cared for; already had a bore scope down each cylinder, oil checked and filter inspected, no valve tap, which is a common issue with the 2012-15 model year 3.6l. The alternator is clean, airbox clean, transmission fluid clean, and not burnt, coolant clean and properly filled (overflow tank bracket cracked but fine after being epoxied).

All and all, it's likely in the top five used vehicles I have purchased from Fords, VWs, Subarus, Minis, Jeeps and the other 40 vehicles I have owned in the past 15 years, both new and used, cheapest being $8k most expensive $70k. The entire experience has been better than the last two brand new cars I purchased and still own (2018 Civic Si and 2017 Dodge Durango). Here in Florida, the dealers are absolute garbage and most, if not all but two in the Orlando area want sticker plus $700-$1k in base dealer fees not including tax, title, license, paperwork, and preparation fees all totaling over $1000 minimum at the least expensive dealerships. I drove three hours out and three hours back to get the Honda Civic Si and still paid $700 in dealer fees, full msrp, and they tried (and failed, while including them anyway) to force me to buy the dealer installed options totaling $799 that I didn't ask for when the deal was made over the phone prior. That was the least expensive dealership option by $580.

If somehow you find fault with Carvana just remember you only get what you give. If you are looking for perfection, buy new. If you want convenience, fair upfront pricing and honest delivery/salesmen/saleswomen with ZERO stress, this is the place to go. If you want a perfect specimen for cheap, you will waste more time than it is worth trying to find it, these are USED cars, just buy a new car and pay the premium for perfect like myself and many others do all the time.

Also, I have only had this Jeep in my possession for eight hours, and I will have it looking showroom worthy in another six hours including painting the entire underside (it helps to have a vehicle lift at home).

I can't stress enough that I will certainly be back to Carvana within 12 months for another fun toy delivered to my door!

Best experience

By Christa L, Canton, NC, Verified Reviewer

After searching for what seemed like an eternity, being turned down by dealers due to the negative equity I had in my car and price point I wanted to be within, l researched Carvana. I seriously looked at every review I could find. I put my info in on their site, my trade info, and they gave me the price for each car I looked at including the down payment, monthly payment, and finance rate.

I decided on a Ford SUV. I arranged the drop off time, sent in a few documents and verified income, and signed my contract. A week later, two gentlemen brought my new car to my driveway, inspected my trade and had me sign a few forms. It was so EASY. No BS from a dealer, no waiting all day for financing...just simple. And I absolutely love my new car. I would highly recommend!

Didn't purchase. Misleading listings.

By Mark L, Dayton, OH, Verified Reviewer

I was on the verge of purchasing a VW Golf TDI. They come in 4 trims: Launch, S, SE, SEL (from low to high). I was seeking SELs and found several on the site. The prices and quality of the cars seemed good. Upon further inspection (looking at detailed specs, the window sticker, and VW's VIN Check site), I found that multiple (at least 3) SEL listings were actually for the lesser S trim. Ok, this might not seem like a huge deal. Most people would catch it prior to purchase. However, it led me to wonder if this was a practice of deception or a simple mistake. Hopefully the latter but it's made me leery.

In short, I'd do 3rd party research on their cars whenever possible. I notified Carvana of the error on the vehicle listing I was researching. It was updated within 24 hours. Kudos for that but there are still other incorrect listings with the same issue.

After one year I’m unsatisfied

By Kelley Wade, Philadelphia, PA, Verified Reviewer

At first I though Carvana was the answer to all my problems. Unfortunately, I was wrong. I love my car, but if I use the A/C or heat, my car smells like cigarettes, something I was very specific about not wanting. The windshield broke the first week, which they fixed, but I already need to replace my breaks at 30k miles. What bothers me most is I found rotted food under the upholstery of the front seats of my car. I bought a Jeep Wrangler and the bolts to keep the top on weren’t even there. I will probably sell the car in a year or two, unfortunately.

Still a dealership

By Angela Bradford, Houston, TX, Verified Reviewer

I made a purchase through Carvana after my Civic flooded from Harvey. Since 99% of dealerships flooded in my area, I didn't have much of a choice. The car delivered had minor exterior body damage that wasn't disclosed in the listing (front deep scratch, rear chipping), and the front plastic tow hook was missing.

Several months later, I noticed a foul smell. After inspecting the car, I realized the passenger side front and rear carpet was damp. I took it to a mechanic and found out the windshield had been improperly replaced and was slowly leaking. That's why it took so long to discover it. So I ended up with two flooded vehicles.

Because it was out of the warranty period, Carvana refused to help me. You're better off purchasing from a dealership because at least you'll have physical people to work with. It's really no different in terms of sales. They're great until they get your money. My car will be paid off in three years, and because of these reasons, I will not be purchasing from Carvana again.

Great purchase

By Blaine, Dallas, TX, Verified Reviewer

Let me first start out by saying I am a certified ASE mechanic, so I am VERY picky about the condition of my cars. I purchased a one-owner 2014 BMW 335I with 20K miles. After a full inspection, the car was extremely clean, zero issues with no accidents or paint work.

A few items to note; the oil was close to its service interval (about a 1,000 Miles left), and wiper blades were shot. Both of which would have been addressed at a local dealership before delivery. The price was about $500 more than local dealerships, but this one had lower miles, more options and the right color (Estoril Blue). Overall I felt I received a very clean car at market value.

Side note, I traded in my previous car and did not have to use financing so I cannot review their financing dept.

The ONLY way to buy a car! Best experience EVER!

By Jonathan Morgan, Los Angeles, CA, Verified Reviewer

My old Hyundai Genesis had reached the end of its life. It was time to buy a new car. Ugh! There's nothing I hate more than heading down to the car lot and negotiating for days on end. I can't handle all the games and tactics the salesmen play at the dealer.

Still, I needed a new car, so I headed down to the lot and drove a very nice Silverado 1500 LTZ. I loved the truck. I hated the price.

And that's when I found Carvana. They sold me the same exact truck for $10K LESS than the dealer! Seriously! But it didn't end there. The buying experience was so fast and so easy! I completed my order on a Thursday, and they had the car ready for me on Saturday. They delivered it right to my door and took my old Genesis away as a trade-in. The whole thing took like 30 minutes. So easy. So pleasant. Such a great deal!

I have an AMAZING truck that is far below what I imagined I was going to pay. I will tell everyone about Carvana from here on out, and I will never buy a car any other way. This was truly the best car buying experience EVER!

Sold my car through Carvana

By Maria Pimentel Alvarez, Palm Harbor, FL, Verified Reviewer

It was the easiest process ever to sell my car; I entered my info, then took pictures of my documents and uploaded to their site, and three days later I had someone come check out my car and gave me a check for what I was told it was worth, even with a few big cosmetic defects. They were polite and very professional. I even left my garage door opener in the car, and they said they would FedEx it to me.

I highly recommend them and will definitely use them in the future. I can’t believe how easy it was. I had tried the Kelley Blue Book site, which linked me with a local dealer who wasted my time and totally tried to swindle me on my car. I laughed and said no thanks. I have a better offer through Carvana, see ya! So yes, Carvana was a great experience for me.

Quick and easy

By Allison Battenberg, Long Island, NY, Verified Reviewer

I just got my car today, and all I can say is from start to finish it was easy and quick! Nice people to work with, and the car is in prestige shape. I got a better financing rate than a dealership, I liked the fact they had multiple car options, and since I meet them within the 50-mile radius, it was free shipping.
