Charged but did not have a session!

By Melissa, Toronto Ontario, Canada, Verified Reviewer

I joined BetterHelp for the second time for anxiety/depression issues. The first time I joined, I didn’t have the best experience, but the second time was even worse.

I joined, and they matched me with a therapist who would message me random questions about depression and would take forever to respond to my answers. And when she finally did, it was a one worded response. Anyhow, I decided to cancel before even having a session because I wasn’t getting the support I expected. They would only provide me with a partial refund because they compared there membership fee the same “as my cable bill.”

Horrible customer care for individuals seeking help for mental health. Don’t waste your money! Many people out there want to help, but BetterHelp just takes advantage of those in need.

Wonderful service

By Donna Foster, Lake City, PA, Verified Reviewer

My experience so far has been excellent! My counselor is friendly and kind, understanding and courteous, & very knowledgeable. I never feel judged. It is so easy to talk to her, and she replies quickly. I would definitely recommend going this route for counseling if you are in need of help but don’t have a lot of time or money, or don’t want the stigma that could come with others knowing you’re in counseling. It is completely confidential, and I love the PIN system for logging in!

Great advice

By Corey Bourbonniere, Pittsburgh, PA, Verified Reviewer

I’ve been using BetterHelp now for just a few short weeks. In that time I’ve started talking to a great therapist who’s helped give me a bit of direction in my life. I’ve been coping better with my anxiety, and have connected some of the dots as to how I got where I am in the first place. I was connected in a day or two with a wonderful therapist who I feel safe with, and who makes me feel valued and important. She responds quickly, and is flexible when it comes to scheduling live sessions. I’m so happy to have found this resource, and have already and will continue to share it with others.

Stuck vs. Unstuck

By Alison Ramsey, Loveland, CO, Verified Reviewer

If I have a choice, I will choose to become unstuck every time! BetterHelp came along at a great time for me - right after the holidays when the big let down starts to happen for most of us, if I may say so, and I had been diagnosed with complex PTSD. The diagnosing therapist was not only pricey but also on vacation! None of my other usual “fixes” were helping me out of what was about to be a prolonged depression.

Thank you to BetterHelp for getting me a great therapist on video conference and for a manageable price!

BetterHelp and my counselor

By Jennifer Flesher, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp has been very awesome to communicate. When I could not afford my weekly amount, they helped me by writing a review. What therapy clinic would do that for you?

I have been with BetterHelp for 6 months now, and they have helped me change my perspective on online therapy. They have subsidy if you're a low-income household. They matched me up with an awesome therapist. Before our weekly talk, I get so excited. I enjoy that I can message her during the week and if something comes up, I can put "urgent" and my counselor is very prompt.

If you are nervous to chat with a therapist in your city, give this a try. It’s affordable, and for myself, it has changed my everyday life.

A must do!

By Terri, Maine, Verified Reviewer

It is true that they tell you a weekly rate and take it out for one month. I emailed them because I didn't even know when it was coming out. They responded immediately. Although they couldn't change the situation, they were apologetic and took my suggestion of emailing prior to withdrawing with the date and the amount. This is a minor detail compared to the help I have received. I have found a smile again. Thank you, Patrick.

Very helpful and convenient!

By Mike Riess, Waco, TX, Verified Reviewer

I was not sure how app-based therapy would go, but it has been great so far! Surprisingly helpful. Don't hesitate to talk to someone! I'd recommend this service without hesitation.

I did change my counselors initially, but not because the first one was bad, I just wanted some very specific things.

Can't cancel your own subscription.

By Stephen, England, Verified Reviewer

The counseling was good, but when I came to cancel, the system told me you couldn't do this on your own. Your counselor needs to send you a link to cancel the subscription, and until they do that, and you have completed it, you are considered to still be subscribed.

I've never come across any firm where I can't cancel my own subscription; this is definitely dodgy and a scam.

Also, they quote you a weekly charge but don't mention they will charge you a full month in advance. Essentially, they are crooks.

BetterHelp is a priceless resource

By Alisa Wise, Camas, WA, Verified Reviewer

I came to BetterHelp with a lot of past trauma, scars, loss and had developed behaviors and anxieties as a result and had a hard time being present and enjoying my life and relationships. I was matched with an AMAZING counselor and the ability to write at any time (from my home, computer, phone, etc.) was so beneficial, in expressing my emotions and thoughts in real time.

My counselor, Dr. Terri Lechnyr, would always respond within 24 hours. She was responsive, compassionate, skilled and also strong! She helped give to me the skills I needed to find my own power and take it back! She taught me how to find my own peace and joy, even in the midst of tough times. BetterHelp is a priceless resource! I would use them again and again and highly recommend them!

Highly recommend

By Robbie, Texas, Verified Reviewer

Between working full time all week and having two kids, I never thought counseling would be something I could fit into my schedule. I stumbled across an ad for BetterHelp on Facebook one day and decided "why not?"

It was literally the best thing I could've come across. You can message your counselor at any time, so no having to take off work to go to an office. It's more affordable than seeing a counselor in person. For the cost of one office visit, you get a whole month of unlimited access to your own personal counselor.

I love that BetterHelp gets to know you before matching you with a counselor. I feel that it helps ensure you're matched with someone that is experienced in helping with what you're needing help with. BetterHelp also offers a discount if you are unable to pay the full amount due to your financial situation and not a lot of counseling services will do that.

I'm so glad I found BetterHelp. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who says they need/want counseling. I've already recommended it to a few friends.

A great choice

By Krista Watson, Maine, Verified Reviewer

Because I could not find a therapist who could accommodate my rotating schedule, I decided to explore teletherapy. Best choice ever! I can chat via "email" or set up a time for "face to face." Because I like taking the time to think about things, I've only used the chat/email option and that works well for me. My therapist, June, is gentle, kind, knowledgeable and a great match. I write 2-3 times a week and receive a genuine, thoughtful and helpful response every time. I've been so happy with the time that I've put in so far and feel this was a great move for my mental health.

By Gail Gilchrist, Florida, Verified Reviewer

I found BetterHelp about three years ago when going through some traumatic times. I've had some trouble dealing with my past and living in the present. My counselor is there, insightful and wow, I'm a better me today! I'm more "me" might be the correct term. It's so wonderful to have access 24/7, emails and phone calls. This is very affordable excellent care, we all need to care for ourselves a bit better!

If you don't find your perfect counselor the first time, you can try another.

Accessible and worthwhile

By Sara V., Japan, Verified Reviewer

I live abroad but really wanted to do counseling. I have found BetterHelp to be the perfect solution. I can write whenever I want, and schedule live sessions that work for both mine and the counselor's schedule. I have a pretty busy work life, so this is great. The counselor I work with is so supportive, compassionate, and direct in communication. Though I have only been doing counseling for a month, I am already beginning to see how the tools my counselor is giving me can be applied to my everyday life. Overall it has been extremely accessible and worth it.

Depression and PTSD

By Stacy Hammel, Alberta, Canada, Verified Reviewer

I am only a few weeks into counseling online. I prefer the email format. I can write my concerns at a time that is convenient for me, and not have to keep a physical appointment. My counselor always emails me back in a timely manner. She is able to pull the important pieces of information and ask relevant questions. If I don’t check in for a few days, she sends an email asking how I’m doing. This has been a very effective way of doing therapy, for me, even though I was skeptical at first.

So far so good!

By Paul Randelman, West Hartford, CT, Verified Reviewer

I've been working with a BetterHelp counselor for a couple of weeks and honestly wish they were around about ten years ago. I've been struggling with some pretty crippling and daily-changing issues that I no longer had the time, energy, or care to tackle on my own. Working with a BetterHelp counselor actually gives me something to look forward to each day and has become a significant part of my new life.

Overall, I feel like I was scammed.

By Selene Berming, Montpelier, VT, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp is not upfront about their payment system. They will charge you $45 a week for the first few weeks, and then $25 a week afterward. They will also CONTINUE to charge you for SEVERAL weeks AFTER you cancel!

When you fill out the cancellation form, there is no confirmation that your subscription has been canceled. I filled out the cancellation form three times, but my therapist continued to send me automated messages checking in with me, which is what tipped me off that I was still being charged.

I reached out to their support team, and that was where I found out that I was still going to be charged for several more weeks after I canceled.

If you don't use the service for a week, you are going to be charged $45-$25 for a bunch of generic messages from your therapist.

I think that this system could work for people who want to have therapy sessions multiple times a week, if BetterHelp was a little more upfront about their system of taking payment.

Overall, I feel like I was scammed.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

BetterHelp is no good. The counselors are never available.

By Elizabeth Chatz, Athens, Greece, Verified Reviewer

I needed to find a way to speak regularly with a therapist as I have been dealing with a lot of depression lately. I enrolled in BetterHelp and used the little money I had saved for my health to do so.

After three weeks, I have had two counselors who were completely unresponsive to me. The first one never showed up for our Live Health session. And the second canceled only one hour before.

The company promises that you can have "unlimited" sessions, but this is a false claim because each counselor only makes available about one session per week, and then if you schedule them, they cancel on you (or just don't show up).

I don't normally write reviews, but this is serious. This company is taking advantage of people who need to talk to someone, and who need help. It's unusually cruel.

DON'T get caught in this trap like I was.

A wonderful service!

By TJ McDonnell, Huntingdon Valley, PA, Verified Reviewer

This is my first time trying online counseling. I was matched with an understanding, empathetic, and knowledgeable counselor who truly understands my issues, validates them, and gives me solid helpful feedback and guidance. He is helping me to establish goals and boundaries as well.

I have just begun my counseling. Already we have utilized messaging and a live phone call. Our next session will be a video call. I am both impressed and happy with my counselor. His caring attitude is apparent from the get-go.

I highly recommend BetterHelp to anyone in need of an affordable caring service. The fee schedule is amazing! I am most pleased!

I have done conventional therapy and found it to help my depression and anxiety greatly. However, it can be expensive. BetterHelp has the same quality for a better price. Understanding and support

By Tracy-Lee McKinney, Newman, Western Australia, Verified Reviewer

My experience with BetterHelp has been more than I could have ever expected. A gift from my daughter and one that has saved me from many low and devastating thoughts of myself and my life. A caring team and a very professional team, whereby I still feel their gentle hugs even over the airways. To gently break through and read between the lines of comments that can sometimes be anger, resentment, and self-disgust has always been approached with love and care for who I am and what I am going through. A true one-on-one. A devoted beautiful soul who has helped me get back onto my feet and be strong again and one who still continues to help. Thank you.

I recommend!

By Patricia E, Florence, Italy, Verified Reviewer

I live in Europe and wanted help in my own language. More than that, I wanted help in my own language from a woman of color. When I went on BetterHelp.com and saw ALL the counselors they work with I was shocked in the best way! I saw many women I was interested in working with and eventually chose someone who is just right for me.

Not to mention that the cost of this therapy is MUCH more affordable than traditional therapy, which I wouldn't have even been able to afford.

I've already recommended this service to MANY friends!

Good option for busy schedules

By Tracy Hooper, Sanford, FL, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp's online counseling is convenient for people with hectic schedules that don't have room for regular 9-5 office visits. Counseling can be via email, group session, or one-on-one video chat; just make sure the counselor assigned to you communicates in a way that works for you. It's also easy to request a new counselor if needed.

BetterHelp works for me

By Sierra Garrett, Martinez, CA, Verified Reviewer

I've been told most of my life that I need to see a therapist to deal with my underlying family issues. As my physical and mental health grew worse and worse, I started to think about therapy seriously. But I have always been closed off to people, especially strangers but even to close friends, so I didn't think therapy would work for me.

Then I found BetterHelp. Since the therapist is communicating with you over chat messaging, I didn't feel like I was being forced to bare my soul to a stranger. I'm not being forced at all, in fact. I can message my therapist any time I feel like it from my phone and say as much or as little as I want and she gets back to me quickly throughout the day. It's like sending a text message to someone to vent about your day or the problem you're dealing with, and knowing that someone is listening to you and doesn't judge you for saying that or doing that.

Because most of the communication is done over chat, it can feel impersonal to some people, but I find it relieving. Since I'm not looking a person in the face, and they aren't staring at me watching for my body language, I can be a bit more honest with them and myself. It's impersonal, so there are no consequences to what you say or do.

Every week I have a "live session" with my therapist where we can either talk on the phone or video chat. Since I like not having to talk to someone face-to-face, I opt for the phone call. It's very discreet, the therapist calls you through BetterHelp, so they never see your actual phone number. During the live session, my therapist asks questions about messages I've sent her over the week and digs a little deeper into why I act the way I do in various situations. It is still a little uncomfortable for me to talk to someone about my issues, even over the phone, but it is helpful to get immediate feedback on my thoughts and nice to receive validation. I'm beginning to open up to my therapist more and rely on these live sessions.

The first therapist I was matched with was very obviously not going to help me, so I opted to switch therapists before canceling my subscription. Yes, you have to pay for the service up front and there's no trial period, but that makes sense because when do you get to try out a therapist for free anyways? It was very easy to switch therapists. They gave me a list of potential matches and I chose the one that I felt would be able to handle my situation best. I'm very glad I did choose her because she has been very supportive, understanding, and creative in her suggestions on how I can deal with things.

I think BetterHelp is very effective for me and is starting to get me comfortable with the idea of seeing a therapist in-person. My friend who likes the personal nature of therapy doesn't think she'd like it, but for those people, there's always video chat live sessions. I think having easy access to tell your therapist how you feel at any given moment throughout the day is extremely helpful and I appreciate it a lot. I think BetterHelp works for me at this stage in my life and can work for most people if they give it a chance.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
