BetterHelp is an online counseling platform that will pair you with a professionally licensed counselor. Access to counseling can be scheduled at any time, anywhere, and through any smart device. The efficacy of BetterHelp is linked to provider skill and intervention protocols, but there are some drawbacks if you fall into certain categories of needs and it’s not covered by your insurance provider.

Not a safe place for therapy

By Crystal, Verified Reviewer

Initially, I thought BetterHelp was good. The counselor definitely was well trained, but they were new to the platform when I started and much more available. Quite quickly, we ran into technical issues and also the time to respond got longer, I felt they were not reading my messages very carefully, and it became hard to schedule sessions. The follow up was not good for the sessions. In the end, I discontinued as a deadline loomed for payment and the counselor did not reply. They then got in touch, I tried it again, and in the first session back together with my trust still a bit fragile, they decided online therapy was not correct for me. I found this to be a very unprofessional way to discontinue therapy.

I then signed out of the platform, but they would anyway have discontinued my account. I found this to be both unprofessional and unkind, allowing a person to open up and then be shut down and left alone. In addition, they promised unlimited contact, but in practice, it is quite limited.

I would say be very careful with this service, as it may not be a safe place for your inner work. I would recommend that the therapist take on less people, so they can be less stressed and have more time. Also, if for some reason the therapy is discontinued, that there is a personal follow up not just a termination of the contract.

I am ok, but it could leave someone in a very bad space, and I did feel a bit abandoned as I had opened up emotionally.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Convenient and thorough

By Erin L Lawson, Arizona, Verified Reviewer

I really love BetterHelp. It is so convenient to be able to write to my therapist while I am in the moment or thinking of something. I love that I can participate at any time, and I don't have to keep a schedule or find childcare to get mental help.

I have long needed some sort of therapy but was never able to afford it or find a therapist I liked, or fit it into my schedule. BetterHelp used my information to match me with my perfect therapist, with the option to change at any time. In person therapy, you are limited to whoever is nearby, and possibly only whoever is in your insurance network. Because of the online nature of BetterHelp, I can speak to somebody who is on my same wavelength, and that is so crucial to effective therapy.

This may be one of the best things I have ever done for myself. Their system totally works for me.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

BetterHelp chose a counselor that truly fits my needs.

By Maria Adele Gibson, Minnesota, Verified Reviewer

I contacted BetterHelp after reading a book about CPTSD. In the book, it said some people with extreme trust issues may do better in online therapy then face to face therapy. I had tried online before, but I felt the therapist to be pushy about digging too deep too fast. Plus, it was too costly. I was surprised and delighted when BetterHelp gave me a discount. I could not have paid the full price at this time. Also, I feel they truly matched me with a therapist that understands my issues.

I also tried face to face counseling last year. I have been in counseling on and off for many years. I've healed from eating disorders and drug addiction. I'm still working on being sober from alcohol and Complex PTSD with dissociation.

It's very hard to get help with dissociative issues. I cycled rapidly through four therapists last year only to find that they really didn't know how to help. Also, since the therapist was an hour away, it was not good for me to drive home sometimes after a session.

I feel that my counselor has a good understanding of what my needs are in therapy. She is gentle and kind, and that is great.

Because I live in a rural area and we get a lot of snow, it's difficult for me to drive a long distance in the Winter, so it's nice to sit at my kitchen table and work on issues.

It's also nice to be able to text my thoughts and feeling to her. That is helpful.

I'm so grateful for BetterHelp.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The good, the bad, and the ugly

By Jasmine Reder, Ingalls, IN, Verified Reviewer

When I first started with BetterHelp, there was a huge problem. I was matched with a therapist, I wrote my first message, then I received an email claiming that some therapists were "concerned" about my responses and that I was not allowed to utilize their services anymore. Let me clarify, I was NOT suicidal, I was NOT a danger to myself nor others, and I simply wanted someone to help me through PTSD issues. I had paid $180 for the month, and it went through successfully.

When I responded, asking for clarification as to why I was being rejected, I received an email quoting their policies that stated they were allowed to reject help to anyone for any reason and a note about getting a refund. That was it. I was so deflated. I tried again a second time, and, same as the first, I was rejected. I had made sure my introductory message was very tame the second time around, nothing more than the ramblings of a desperate housewife, so I was even more confused as to why they were rejecting me! Again, they refused to give me a proper answer and refunded my $180. By this point, I was furious, and I left a scathing review on the counselor who reported me. I was ready to quit trying to get help from this site when something wonderful occurred!

The third time was a charm! I got matched with a counselor who could have been my soulmate. Her expertise matched my disease, her counseling style matched my schedule, and her words were laced with a lack of judgment and complete empathy towards me.

I went to purchase a month of therapy when I noticed an option for financial aid. Curious, I clicked and filled out a short survey. Within seconds, the price of counseling went down by 50% for the first two months! Excitedly, I took advantage of the offer, and no rejection letter!

We started out with a list of questions about where I was at in life, mentally, and physically. My counselor asked pages worth of questions, and I wrote back pages worth of answers. Unlike the previous two counselors that I had been matched with, this counselor had no intentions for live chats or video chats, which was perfect for me. The best part about BetterHelp is that you can switch counselors at any time and for any reason, so, if you don't match with someone's preferred style of counseling, if they don't respond as often as you'd like, or if they simply rub you the wrong way - one click, and they cycle in a new counselor. This, along with their financial aid option, is what puts BetterHelp on the top list of online counseling sites.

All in all, the verdict is: BetterHelp is like a luxurious country club. If you can afford the fee and get accepted in, it will be the best money you've ever spent. However, you CAN get rejected without reason, and the services are not free. Take the chance. The worst that can happen is that you're stuck where you started, so you honestly have nothing to lose, but you're temper.

I'm using BetterHelp services for the past few months, and it has been great. This platform came to me right at the moment I needed it, I got matched to the best counselor I could ask for, and I think even if I would look for a different counselor around not on this platform, it would never be the same match.

Happy camper

By Ashley Marie Amato, Corona, CA, Verified Reviewer

Well, here goes. I've been working with a counselor now for I'd say about a month now, and so far it's been pretty good. I definitely see the changes. I still have a lot to work on, but I know that I am getting better. I thank the Lord for sending me here, to find BetterHelp and their staff. They have been a wonderful help for me. I would definitely recommend Ruby Paparello. She is great, and very attentive. I was very thankful to find her. I still need help, and working on things, but I know that I can do it now. All it took was a little faith on my part, and help on the other end.

I would definitely recommend this process, but make sure you find what you are looking for. Take advantage of the ability to look through many counselors. If one is not fitting you, find another one, and make a decision. I cannot speak for everyone, but I definitely think that this could be good for many people, especially those afraid to go out, or for whatever reason cannot.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Unbelievable, remarkable experience!

By Suzanne Rose, Cory, CO, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp has provided such an amazing service in matching me with a licensed, caring, compassionate, and truly incredible therapist.

When I signed up for the service, I was taking a huge leap of faith because I had never heard of doing therapy online, but I was having a lot of issues with depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and PTSD. Not to mention current crisis issues, which meant I needed to get some qualified help from somewhere, fast. I live in a really small town, which makes it difficult to find a therapist who can help me on the level I need.

When I was matched with my therapist, I was so thrilled with the professionalism, compassion, empathy, and all things that truly make an EXCELLENT therapist! The fact that I found this online was just such a surprise to me! I hadn't expected getting such high quality therapy. It is no different than seeing the therapist in person!

Both my therapist AND BetterHelp always go way above and beyond. Excellent customer service is truly one of their core values.

If you or someone you love needs therapy, I highly recommend going through BetterHelp! I cannot thank them or my therapist enough for the remarkable care that they give.

Horrible rip-off

By Larisa, West Virginia, Verified Reviewer

I used this online "therapy" over the summer when I was depressed and anxious. I tried to cancel but ran into problems. I used it for a month but got charged for three months and never refunded for the time I wasn't using it. It took me multiple attempts to cancel! The process wasn't straightforward. I just wanted out, and they wouldn't let me! When you have mental health issues, that is incredibly frustrating and difficult.

The counselor was horrible. She had little understanding of my situation and just kept giving me the same generic things like "grief cycle" stages. No coping mechanisms. She also forgot to reply several times. Never helped me and it probably made me worse because I was so frustrated about the whole ordeal on top of having a mental health issue! Plus, I ended up back in an emotionally abusive relationship, and my depression got SO much worse.

I am in real, face-to-face therapy with a therapist that listens and does research on my particular problems outside of my sessions and the cost is about the same. And I am improving day by day. Go to a REAL therapist!

Excellent help when you are already on track

By Mariella, Germany, Verified Reviewer

I use BetterHelp for some months now. Since I am pregnant with kids already at home and chronicle depression, I wanted to try something else other than going to my therapist. Busy timeplan.

I already worked a lot on myself, had some therapies and are all over good in managing the ups and downs.

BetterHelp is a positive thing for me; I had a chancellor that fits myself right away. She helps me staying on track and seeing the positive.

Convenient therapy!

By Ashley, Flower Mound, TX, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp is a great way for a lot of different kinds of people to get therapy in a non-traditional setting. Some people may have too much anxiety to go into an office to talk with someone face to face, and it might be easier to talk via chat and then after if they feel comfortable with their therapist, they have the option of Skype, phone call, or in person if they want! I love BetterHelp and chose them because I am very busy with work and going to school, but would still like to talk to someone about some things I’m going through, and it’s all at my own pace and I can chat with them at night after getting everything done that I needed to today and there are no traditional M-F, 8am-5pm that I have to do it between.

Great service, and the app is very helpful and useful as well.

Valuable service giving me hope in our species!

By Ms, Lafayette, CO, Verified Reviewer

Having worked in the healthcare industry for 30 years as a nurse, I was I little skeptical about using an online service for counseling, however, my time is so very limited (like so many of us in the modern world) that it felt like my only option right now. Additionally, affording in-person counseling at this particular juncture of my life is just not feasible.

The "employee assistance program" offered through my work was not helpful and then I remembered I had bookmarked this service from an online advertisement I saw in 2017. I figured I’d sign up for a week and see how it went. Now I’m both feet in having already started to build a strong, deep connection with the therapist that just happened to be auto-matched with me. Turns out she’s this powerhouse of insight and wisdom with 25 years experience!

I can only hope that she is being compensated financially generously for this incredible support I am receiving. Feeling grateful for this innovative service and match with a therapist with the skills that I need right now to make it through some squeezing-challenges! I have already started to pass BetterHelp onto my own clients and patients in the clinic.

Highly recommend

By Martina Smith, Indiana, Verified Reviewer

I absolutely loved my experience with BetterHelp. I was initially drawn to them when I learned that they had over 2,000 counselors that I could conveniently work with (including LGBT counselors and counselors with liberal backgrounds), and switch to/be matched to any other counselor at any time. I thought this might help me get what I needed quicker, and I was right! There was no having to wait to get down to business, as I had access to my counselor at any time and in many different ways (messaging, video chat, phone chat). The pricing was also phenomenal for unlimited access. Starting out conversing with my counselor about 3-4 times a week for $35/wk is just unbeatable. I eventually dropped down to just a video chat a week/every couple weeks, and the ease of scheduling myself in was wonderful.

I particularly enjoyed doing video chats through this site as well. For someone that is a little socially anxious and prone to nitpicking body language, the space of having a screen between us made for a more natural flow of my thoughts and generally just honesty.

My counselor was terrific, and even though I've ended my counseling for now, it gives me great peace knowing that with a click of a button, I can pick right back up with her whenever I need to.

I would NOT recommend for anyone in a crisis or experiencing serious suicidal thoughts, but I WOULD recommend for anyone needing to talk to someone and get the tools they need to work through mental illness and/or anything bothering you in life. All counselors are certified and legitimate.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Efficient and inexpensive

By Brooke Bartolitius, Alberta, Canada, Verified Reviewer

I was skeptical about this service at first. My counselor replies very quickly to messages. It is extremely valuable to be able to send your counselor a message at any time. Rather than waiting for your next office visit and then having to try and remember everything on the spot. That in itself is stressful!

It seemed expensive to me at first. Then I thought back to counseling in office, and it was $90.00 for one hour. I would frequently forget what I was hoping to resolve under the pressure of a time limit.

Overall I don't think I have a negative thing to say about this service so far.

How to increase your stress levels

By R. Henn, N/A, Verified Reviewer

I joined BetterHelp hoping that the online interaction would be more comfortable, also because it is cheaper than conventional face to face.

I reached out to BetterHelp when I was in a tough spot, and needed some help to get things in order.

I had my first counselor for about a week. He barely communicated with me, explained nothing, showed no interest, and then forgot our scheduled appointment.

My second counselor communicated more over the second week, reviewed the process and then provided responses in a timely manner. Again, this counselor "forgot" our scheduled appointment.

I now am on my third week with BetterHelp, and I have not had a single one on one session with a counselor, even though I paid for a one on one session once a week.

The illusion of therapy

By Fotini Arvanitaki, Thessaloniki, Greece, Verified Reviewer

First of all, this is NOT in any way legitimate counselling.

Everything was great at the beginning. The staff would send emails to check up on me, make sure I'm satisfied with the service, the counselor I was matched with was very polite, punctual and compassionate, albeit a little laconic. While her replies were not much (a single question here and a "oh good for you" there), I thought that maybe that's to be expected and that a therapist won't have much to say during the initial stages of therapy, possibly because they need to get to know me a little better. So, I thought I'd give it a little time.

During that time (weeks really), certain unfortunate things happened. I needed support, and I was paying for said support but was NOT getting any. She'd either respond with a single sentence after three whole days, when she was supposed to reply in less than 24 hours (we'd established that from the beginning), or she'd ask a question which didn't really indicate that she'd even read what I'd written in my previous message. Or, I'd ask questions and wouldn't get ANY answers at all!

What happened with the second therapist was similar in many ways but maybe even worse. While this therapist would send longer replies, I noticed something suspicious; those messages looked legit at first but were in fact template texts she'd use for every online client, she'd only have to change the name and a few minor details, and her job's done. How do I know this? After sending a reply, I got an even longer reply from her within 4 MINUTES! There's no way she was able to read, process or decide how to respond to me (or even spellcheck) in just a few minutes! She obviously had her reply ready, which by the way was full of generalizations and "anxiety management" approaches you read about on popular psychology related websites. I can do that myself, thank you very much.

Hopefully, not all counselors do that, but I've completely lost my faith, and I'm not willing to get scammed ever again.

After 6 weeks of "counselling" and two therapists, I can honestly say that I'm so much worse than when I started. Now, why would I stick with a therapist who doesn't even read my messages?

Also, they offer "unlimited access" to your therapist, but they don't tell you how how often your therapist will be able to communicate with you, could be every 24 hours, every two or even three days. Since when is that unlimited?

Keep in mind that many of these counselors are in reality life coaches who have their own private practices and use online platforms like BetterHelp to get new clients, so make sure their credentials are legitimate. It's easy to get confused with all the LMSW, ACSW, MFT, MS CMHC, NCC, LPC, CAATC, RAS, Ph.D. titles, so do your homework first. You see a Master's degree, but it's possible it's irrelevant with clinical psychology, and in reality, they have more experience in other somewhat related fields.

Also, they claim they have experience dealing with problems relevant to your needs, but that's definitely not the case. No clue as to how they match members with counselors. No wonder you pay $180 a month; the counselors simply don't have to really deal with every online client, I doubt they'd ever find enough time. Their regular clients obviously take up much of their time while the rest of us pay smaller fees in order to get the illusion of therapy.

I feel so much worse than when I started "therapy," because back then I felt hopeful, but now, since I can't afford traditional counseling, I've really hit rock bottom. So, if you're just looking for someone who is NOT allowed to diagnose you (no idea why though), but make some assumptions concerning your issues (if they ever read your messages), then this website is for you. If you're in need of actual help, don't waste your time and money. The worst thing that happened to me was that I opened up and was so unbelievably and painfully ignored. I was tricked into thinking I was being supported by true professionals.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Grocery check out session

By Joe Vass, New Jersey, Verified Reviewer

I had my first session with BetterHelp while the counselor was grocery shopping. I heard quite a bit of background noise at first but thought it was a bad connection. It was not until she was at the cashier that I heard the beeps as each item was rung in. When the cashier asked for coupons, the call basically ended. After that, I asked for another counselor since I already paid. We scheduled an appointment for a phone session that he never bothered to call into or reply to my messages. I am trying to get a refund to no avail.

A complete waste of time and energy!

By Christina Rose, California, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp online therapy sounds like a good idea on paper. But in actuality, they appear only to have incompetent, uninterested, impatient so-called "professional therapists" on their staff.

I joined hoping to find some support for my ongoing grief and loss issues, but I experienced nothing but constant hassles during my attempt to be linked to a therapist. First, they assigned me to a therapist that had the exact opposite skills that I was looking for. Next, when I asked for another therapist, they assigned me to one that didn't know that I had been assigned to her and seemed annoyed that she had to deal with a new client and asked me why I had been assigned to her!

Finally, I was assigned to a third therapist that exchanged emails with me a few times over a weekend, gave me generic information that I already told her I knew about, and then told me she couldn't help me after I asked for clarification regarding information she had sent me. This therapist was truly awful; clueless, short, unsupportive and kept talking about herself. This whole process was a complete waste of time and many hours that left me feeling worse than when I began.

Do not expect anything but minimal, generic feedback and uncaring people here!

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Amazing, finally something that works for me!

By Christina Salvador, Pennsylvania, Verified Reviewer

I have tried to find a way to get therapeutic help for years. I have a lot of social anxiety, and making/keeping appointments were difficult for me. BetterHelp is the answer. The platform is top notch and so easy to use. They are affordable and even offer financial assistance for those who qualify.

At first I worried I would not have the needed personal connection to really dig into the issues that me and my therapist needed to work on, but with all of the options (messaging, email, chat, video-sessions), you can customize the way you communicate to best suit your style, and a deep connection can certainly be made.

This is the answer for anyone with anxiety about therapy/counseling or anyone with busy lives who want treatment options.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I came across BetterHelp while searching the web for online counseling, and it's the best decision I have ever made!

Their services are easy, affordable and suited to your needs.

I didn't think that BetterHelp would meet my high standards, but I was so wrong. I have already recommended BetterHelp to my friends and family.

5/5 from me. It's a no-brainer.

Amazing way to reach out for help!

By Jessica Chittenden, Missouri, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp offers an easy way for people to reach out for help. I know I have a busy schedule with work, kids, husband, ECT, just like everyone else. With BetterHelp, you can have a counseling session in the comfort of your home, on your lunch break at work, or even while you're on vacation! They give you several options for sessions: text chat, video chat, or phone chat. The app is super easy to navigate, and the counselors are chosen based on your needs and preferences, not to mention very well qualified and licensed in your state of residence. I highly recommend BetterHelp.
