Very helpful and highly recommended

By Rijad Sarajlic, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Verified Reviewer

It's a really helpful site. At first, I was a bit hesitant because I simply had too many problems and I thought it'd be just a nuisance, but my therapist was very kind and understanding and helped me get through them.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

BetterHelp gave me the BEST help

By Ty Sanders, Georgia, Verified Reviewer

Dr. Love is amazing! She has the ability to make an online platform feel as though I’m in her presence on her couch! She has challenged me in so many ways, and walked me through some very hard issues. She doesn’t beat around the bush, she meets you where you are and helps you process through whatever you are facing at that moment. While being absolutely professional she expresses herself in a way that I can easily understand. She never talks above my head and is far from stiff and aloof. Her counseling style is comforting, nurturing, but still straightforward and raw. She is a breeze to talk to and is far from judgmental, she is understanding and takes the time to really to gain a firm grasp on not just your issue at hand, but who you are, where you’ve been and where you want to go.

I’m so thankful for Dr. Love’s help, she is an embodiment of her name and given me so much hope and a deeper appreciation for this field.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

WOW! Thanks Ty! It sounds like your match with Dr. Love was amazing! We're so happy for you, and it sounds like you've been able to really gain some insight from Dr. Love's raw, but kind, and professional help! You've made my day just by reading this, and we hope you continue on your mental health journey!

Horrible customer support

By Rachel, California, Verified Reviewer

The worst customer service ever from some girl (or should I say bot?) named Allison. I emailed with a very simple concern regarding my account, and she sends the most boilerplate response back that had absolutely nothing to do with anything I emailed about. When I responded informing her that I didn't feel my question was appropriately answered, she sent back the SAME response with parts of it bolded now as if I was too dumb to read it the first time. She couldn't take just 30 seconds to type out a genuine response back?

I ended up just asking for a refund because I didn't want to deal with this, and her next email to me starts with "Thanks for contacting us. We'd be happy to help!" As if this is the first email she's sending to me. You couldn't take two seconds to at least remove that first line from your boilerplate response?

After a few more email exchanges, she continues to use these boilerplate responses, completely ignoring my request for a refund. It took me calling their hotline number and threatening to sue them to get my refund.

Advice to everyone else: Don't even bother emailing them trying to get support as they obviously do not care about their customers at all. I actually was excited to use BetterHelp and had no plans of canceling, but this experience completely turned me off to them.

My counseling experience, although short-lived, was just so-so, hence why I was reaching out to them. But who knows, other counselors on the platform may be better than the one I was assigned.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Excellent source of help

By Annette H Rubelmann, Connecticut, Verified Reviewer

I stumbled upon BetterHelp at a time when I just didn't know where to find help. I felt I was in crisis, and just couldn't wait to go through the process of finding a local counselor, making an appointment, and then seeing him/her weekly. My counselor reached out to me the very next day and was able to help me through a very difficult time. I had no idea there really was such a thing as online counseling, but BetterHelp is legit. My counselor was excellent, skilled, and local, in case I wanted to see her face-to-face.

I highly recommend this service.

Hi Annette,

Thanks for letting us know about your experience on BetterHelp! I'm so happy to hear that you were able to get connected to your counselor quickly on the platform. We're new-ish (we've been around for almost 5 years!), but we're so happy when we hear the news from members that they're really been able to get help in a time of need! That makes us so happy! We hope you have a great day!

Great therapist and great value

By Samantha Torres, Wisconsin, Verified Reviewer

I have been to therapy in the past, but at this stage in my life, scheduling a time to drive to an appointment is not realistic. BetterHelp has been great, and I was matched with a wonderful counselor. It also seems super easy to switch counselors if you are not happy. A 30-minute session with her only takes 30 minutes, and there is no commute, so it is easier to fit into a busy week. We also message at least once during the week. The value is very good, I would pay three times the price to have contact two times a week with a local therapist in office. It is definitely worth it to try, the company really seems like they care and would be easy to work with to help find the right therapist.

Always available, always helpful

By V.D., Maryland, Verified Reviewer

I truly appreciate the exceptional counseling services I have been receiving from BetterHelp. My counselor is available any day of the week and even early hours in the morning. It's like I'm never without help! She is kind, and I can sense that she knows what she is doing. This service truly lives up to its name because since I have been using it, I have indeed experienced "BetterHealth."

Kind regards.

BetterHelp has been a godsend for me

By Jonathan Diefenbach, Missouri, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp has been a godsend for me. I have been struggling with anxiety, panic, depression, and agoraphobia for quite some time. It felt like a catch-22 because getting help meant having to get out of the house, which is exactly what I needed help doing!

BetterHelp matched me up with a counselor who really jibes with me, who understands my problems, and who has been teaching me great tools to deal with those problems and get better. I am so much better off now than I was when I signed up, and I plan to continue using BetterHelp for years to come.

It's about time!

By Donna McClelland, California, Verified Reviewer

I love this platform! I needed someone to talk with about some issues, but I can't afford a traditional therapist at this time, so I was thrilled when I came across an ad for BetterHelp for only $65 per month. I get four sessions per month, which is perfect for my needs and a great value!

The first therapist I picked only counseled via email, and it felt terribly disjointed, so I asked the staff at BetterHelp for someone else who did phone counseling, and they found me the best therapist ever!

I've been talking with this therapist for about three or four weeks now, and I cannot tell you how much better I feel! I totally look forward to my weekly calls.

I feel like this service is invaluable. There is a huge need for affordable mental health providers. I mean, take a look at all the shootings going on and the homelessness problem. How many people could get better and not end up like that if they had an inexpensive way to deal with their issues? Just saying.

Worst experience

By A.N., Michigan, Verified Reviewer

I got matched with the counselor from hell. After my first communication with her, she lambasted me, called me foolish, and said she had no empathy for me.

You go here for help not to be ripped apart for your mistakes. It was humiliating and emotionally crushing. She could have just said we weren’t a good match. Insulting someone with a history of depression and self-esteem issues is just unnecessarily cruel.

Find your counselor

By Hanna North, Dominican Republic, Verified Reviewer

Before signing up, I read a lot of reviews about BetterHelp, and my biggest concern was that I would have trouble contacting my counselor. I have to say that this has absolutely not been the case with me, I have never waited for more than overnight for a response, which I think is reasonable as this is not a crisis line. I have always found my counselor to actively engage in my emotional well being and in her messages I feel the care and interest in my emotional space. We have a phone session once a week, and I always feel that she is hearing me. I was skeptical about correspondence therapy as I have a traumatic history which leads me to feel that no one can hear me or is listening to me but I really felt trust in my counselor instantly.

I have been living abroad for a long time and haven't had access to counseling in English so though I was skeptical, and I decided to try it out because I recognized that I need it. Honestly, my counselor has changed my perspective and my life in a very short time. So my recommendation would be that if you're not feeling connected to your counselor, change counselors until you find someone who works well with you. I also know that this isn't possible or is very difficult for a lot of people, so I hope that you have the love and support you need to get you to a point where you can find the right help.

I have had nothing but a positive experience, and I think that given the number of counselors available, it is very possible to find the right fit.

An uncaring and cruel company

By G C, Chicago, IL, Verified Reviewer

Kandee Willis seemed like a good fit until she canceled on me every session we had. I would talk to her over chat every now and then but received no real one on one time with her.

My opinion is that it's disgraceful that this service condones that type of behavior for people that pay money to have therapy and when it is not received refuse to refund your money or take any sort of responsibility. It's highly unprofessional and unethical.

I don't recommend this service as it seems wishy-washy and not an actual replacement for a positive mental health service.

They will cheat you if they can.

Their reason for why I cannot receive a refund being I should have unsubscribed or changed my counselor. You realize when people come to you they are in need of a helping hand and guidance correct?

How dare you take advantage of innocent people who should be able to rely on the people they are paying to get the service they need. You are falsely advertising and stealing people's money if you employ people who are NOT giving the service that BetterHelp is.

If there is any way this can be righted, I will make it happen. Your business is unethical and awful. Who knows how many people you have taken money from for half-assed therapy.

They basically took advantage and stole $130.00 from me.

A great way to start getting better, especially if you are anxious about it

By Marley McKenna, Siegburg, Germany, Verified Reviewer

As a person who contemplated getting counseling for a long time but was always too anxious about going in person, BetterHelp finally gave me the opportunity to do so. Setting it up is very easy, and they offer many ways to get help even if you do not have a lot of money. You can talk to your counselor as much as you like and your conversations are locked with a pin, so you don’t have to worry about anyone looking into your personal stuff. Every time your counselor writes you, you get an email prompting you to check it out!

The staff is very friendly, and if you are in a crisis, there are many options open to you. If you need someone to talk to and help you deal with issues you are facing, BetterHelp is a great way to go.

Extremely supportive on many platforms

By Ursula McCabe, Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, Verified Reviewer

I've only been working with BetterHelp for just over two weeks, but the experience so far has been exemplary.

The ease of contacting your chosen therapist is a big plus for me. You can send instant messages and book online face to face sessions that complement each other wonderfully.

I think if you have already identified the fact that your life has elements of anxiety/stress/depression then if you speak to someone at BetterHelp you are ready to receive their help.

My personal therapist has been responsive and supportive in ways that I was expecting but also in surprising ways that I would not have been able to identify myself or just speaking to loved ones.

Only subscribe to BetterHelp if you are ready, willing, and able to talk and communicate your issues. The therapists are not magical wizards that make your problems go away, and certainly if you're not willing to talk about your issues. You need to give over details you might feel uncomfortable with, but if you give them just a little bit, they can give you so much back.

If you are considering therapy but cannot afford face-to-face, or find it intimidating, I highly recommend BetterHelp as you can choose to exclusively write a message, or talk a few times a week depending on your therapist's availability.

All in all, a great service that I'm extremely grateful for.

Turned me away

By Haley, California, Verified Reviewer

They turned me away and closed my account after I spent money. I am waiting for a refund, but what kind of platform for therapy is going to turn away someone looking for help? Don't waste your time if you have a lot of issues; they won't help you and will instead make you feel like you are beyond help.

By Teresa Morris, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, Verified Reviewer

I've struggled with mental health for decades with no success. I've also had a couple of different diagnoses, yet treatments had no effect. Finding and getting help where I am is a very long wait. "Free" trial.

By Claire Stratford, Ontario, Canada, Verified Reviewer

I tried to get help with them for my severe anxiety. They offer a 7-day trial but as soon as I confirmed the counselor they chose, they immediately charged me $180. I disputed it, and they reversed the charge...and deleted my account.

Worth a shot

By Alex Scheible, Rochester, NY, Verified Reviewer

It was a mix between really good counselors and then just a lack of responses so it wasn’t worth my money. The system didn’t seem to inform my counselor when I responded so I’m unsure if it was her or the system but in the end getting one response a week, if that, wasn’t worth it. Definitely a good place to let everything off your chest though.

False advertising

By S P, USA, Verified Reviewer

I signed up with BetterHelp because there isn't a therapist for the expertise I need that took my insurance, had availability, could work within my time constraints, and was close to where I live. I thought I might have better luck online with a wider pool of therapist to choose from (I did not know that I can only be matched with a therapist in my state). The site claims that you will be matched with "over 2,000 therapists." However, when they limit it to the state you are in the number drops significantly.

Furthermore, this "policy" of only in state matching is not explained anywhere on their website. Apparently, it only exists in certain states or something, which makes it very confusing. Even their own therapist wasn't clear on the policy.

After several failed matches with therapists who didn't have the skills I need, one therapist suggested two others who had the expertise I required. One was in Canada and the other in Texas. It was recommended that I contact help and request one of them. But BetterHelp refused me to match me with either of the therapists that could help me just because they didn't live in my state. However, one of the therapist I was previously matched with was also outside my state, so it really didn't make sense. They definitely need to make this more clear on their website. I'm sure that I'm not the only one that believes that online therapy isn't or should not be limited by state borders.

BetterHelp is the better service to use

By Nicole S, Atlanta, GA, Verified Reviewer

I needed some serious help. My life was spiraling out of control, and I felt as though I was locked in a cage. I tried searching for teletherapy, e-therapy, online therapy, and even tried to make appointments with a local therapist. Not only would they not take my insurance but were asking for over $300 for an office visit or no appointments were available for the next three months.

I stumbled upon BetterHelp from a website and looked them up. I took a chance, filled out the profile, applied for a scholarship, and was matched with a therapist. I immediately gave her my entire mental health history, and medications I had taken and what was currently going on.

I love being able to text my therapist any time and get a timely response back. Once a week we schedule phone talks so we can go into deep discussions. What I liked best is I didn’t have to wait for an appointment, I didn’t have to pay money upfront, I got the help I need, recommendations, and little assignments to help me get better.

Four months later I’m proud to say I’m a new person. My therapist was beyond excited just as I was with the progress I made. I know at any time I could probably fall back, but we keep talking even though I’m no longer in that dark place. What’s even better is she's helping my daughter and my husband (who is a veteran with PTSD).

BetterHelp also has live webinars on different topics where you can get additional advice from other therapists.

It’s an amazing service, and I highly recommend using it to everyone feeling trapped and locked.

So grateful

By Shelby, Australia, Verified Reviewer

Mental health awareness truly should be discussed more regularly. We live in a society where either people victimize themselves or they internalize their issues; both of which are not a solution in dealing with things.

You can have gone through some really horrible things in your life and still have the same opportunity as everyone else to be a decent human being. You can be the funny person who always has a smile on their face, but you are allowed moments of weakness to deal with your struggles.

Life is actually pretty tough, and there is nothing wrong in acknowledging that. Counseling is not wallowing in your misery, it’s setting a foundation to build yourself up to handle life’s everyday hurdles whether they be big or small. Having an unbiased perspective can truly help you see things differently and not feel hopeless or alone.

I truly am a massive advocate for BetterHelp. The business itself is an amazing platform. Affordable pricing, 24/7 access, and exceptional counselors.

My personal journey has been a testament in itself. For so long I, like many people, put the need for counseling on the back burner, and as a result, my life really began to unravel and I felt like I was suffocating from the weight of it. I am not someone who sinks into misery, I am a fighter, but I lost sight of that girl.

I was paired with Rob Beckett as my counselor. I had some pretty heavy stuff to deal with, even things I had never disclosed to anyone, and I didn’t know if a counselor could handle me, to be honest. I could not have been paired better. Rob has truly been such a support system. He responds within a timely manner, we can discuss anything and everything, and he is a true professional. Not to mention he also is extremely down to earth, very relatable, and gives realistic feedback. In your hardest moments, he can provide compassion, but he also can keep you from wallowing with his humor.

This company being available, the people it employees, and the benefits it provides, have all made an impact on my life. Is everyday easy now? No, and that will never be the case, but every day is a easier now in knowing I have an incredible support system.

Most amazing service.

By Jamie, Connecticut, Verified Reviewer

The most important thing I have to say is that I wish I found this service and Barbara so much sooner. I absolutely could not have asked for a better experience. I feel like some sort of paid spokesperson, but I sincerely feel like this experience has been so life changing for me. Barbara's responses are so incredibly insightful, she always knows how to put my situation in a different perspective to help me understand it more, and she reiterates what I share with her to show that she understands and is truly listening. Aside from Barbara's outstanding expertise, this platform is the best I could have hoped for.

It's so convenient for me to share my thoughts and feelings as I'm living them as opposed to trying to recall them in an hour-long session every week like a standard therapist. I also feel so much more comfortable with the anonymous aspect of it all. I can share so much more than I ever felt I could with a face-to-face session. The convenience coupled with such an awesome counselor has me here to stay.

Thank you, Barbara, for always being there! It's genuinely appreciated.

Getting help

By Sher, Canada, Verified Reviewer

It takes a lot of courage to reach out for help, no matter what you are struggling with. BetterHelp has been a great tool to have.

The counselor I was matched with makes me feel as though she really cares. She listens and understands and helps me to better understand myself. She has helped me through grief, helped me to strengthen my marriage, and helped me to rebuild my self-confidence. You can’t put a price tag on feeling better mentally and emotionally.

It’s completely confidential. I live in a very small town, so everyone knows who is in therapy and who isn’t. No one knows I am seeking help. Just my therapist. BetterHelp is one of the best investments I have made in myself. I spent a lot of money on self-help books and programming only to be disappointed, but with this, I have already seen results. This has already helped me immensely.

There is nothing wrong with needing help from time to time. BetterHelp makes it easy and safe to reach out.

Unable to even make a single suggestion across two therapists

By Eric Deslauriers, California, Verified Reviewer

In summary, the first therapist - selected by BetterHelp - was highly responsive, but only asked the standard "and how does that make you feel?," "What do you think you need to changes," "How do you think you should change how you interact with." It ended up being NINE pages when pasted into a word document and not one single suggestion. When asked about why we couldn't roll up our sleeves and tackle any single issue, she claimed that she didn't know enough about me. The nine pages represented no less than four full sessions with an in-person therapist. She finally agreed it was out of her scope and I should seek another therapist.

I gave the next therapist a summary. He promised to read it and get back to me in the morning. FIVE days later, no response. I sent him an urgent message asking when we could talk and also sent a note to customer service summarizing the issue so far with both therapists.

The therapist committed to responding the next morning (it was around 6 pm).

Support came back with the fact I had not responded to his last message (five-day delay), so it was on me. When provided a screenshot of the last two comments in the thread, they changed their tune, but what a terrible thing to initially say to the kinds of folks they have in their client base.

TWO full days later (48 hours), still no response.

I requested a full refund after the second day had elapsed. Waiting to see if it is, in fact, a complete refund.

Save your money and find another service.
