BetterHelp is wonderful

By Alexandra N., Houston, TX, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp.com is the most wonderful website for counseling. It has improved my life in ways I never imagined. I, however, have gotten to know my counselor and the website does not pay him well. It also says that my counselor works less that he actually does. It is not fair to counselors.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Very user-friendly

Offers a variety of great counselors

I get the help I need

It underpays counselors

It does not calculate counselors actual work time

It deceives counselors

BetterHelp for the win

By Katrin M., Braunau, Austria, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp is a very good option if you are not comfortable seeing somebody in person during the pandemic, but also if you do not feel on one level with counselors that would be available in your region. It is so easy to match a suitable counselor to your needs and my experiences have been great. I was matched with a professional that I cannot recommend enough. She has given me plenty of good advice and it made me feel instantly better talking to her. I think anyone can benefit from starting therapy on BetterHelp!

BetterHelp is giving me so much fresh air

By Aimee J., Ohio, Verified Reviewer

I decided to try BetterHelp because my anxiety felt crushing. I wish I would have reached out sooner, but I'm so grateful I finally did it. My counselor is kind and calm and helps me think with a fresh perspective without any judgment. It feels safe to tell her all the things bouncing around in my head I'd never want my family or friends to hear.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Love the journal feature on the app, I can blurt out whatever I'm feeling at any time and choose whether I want to share with my counselor.

My counselor never tries to convince me of anything. She's a great listener and encourager. Never judgemental.

Having the app on my phone doesn't make counseling impersonal like I worried it would. With video calls, a real human is there.

I wish I could set up recurring meetings. Right now the app only allows us to schedule one week at a time.

Would be more helpful if sharing journal entries worked like a Google Doc, so I could go back and add something after it's without sending the whole entry in the chat again.

BetterHelp is really great, I have actually recommended it to a ton of my friends. I never saw myself as someone who needed to go to therapy but BetterHelp has actually HELPED me. It is a great service and not a bad price for the high-quality counselors that are matched to you.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

User friendly

Good quality counselors

They find the right match

The price is still a bit high for not being "in-person"

Not enough different services through the site

Does not accept insurance coverage

An overall uplifting experience

By Sarah H., St. Augustine, FL, Verified Reviewer

I usually ignore the ads on social media but this one intrigued me and also, yes, my pain got great enough. With Covid invading and halting our lives, and my mental health never taking a break, I needed something FAST. BetterHelp was there.

It is so user-friendly and they matched me perfectly with my counselor.

It is so much cheaper than a local therapist and I like how I have the option to chose my schedule.

Please give this service a chance. You are not just another customer, they care about you. Thank you BetterHelp!

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

BetterHelp is a lifesaver

By Laura K., Los Angeles, CA, Verified Reviewer

My experience has been absolutely amazing. I connected to the site, on a recommendation from a friend, at I time where I barely had enough bandwidth to get the help I needed. The site made it so incredibly easy to get help quickly and my counselor is fantastic and has been a huge help already.

Wonderful online service!

By Alexandra G., Nashville, TN, Verified Reviewer

I am able to schedule an hour appointment with my counselor each week, and on top of that, message them whenever I need! My counselor gets back to me in a very reasonable timeframe. It helps me know I am heard and have a healthy outlet!

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Counseling on my own time!

I usually have my sessions over the phone while sitting in bed, I feel safe and comfortable while talking through my emotions.

I like to decompress at the end of the day using the journal feature and I love that I can choose to share it (or not share it!) with my counselor with one easy button!

I wish there was an option to pay a little less and only schedule an appointment once every two weeks.

Helpful with a few kinks to work out

By Caroline B., Maryland, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp was easy to sign up for and I feel that it is working to fill a major gap in mental healthcare. We need programs like this! However, it did take me 3 tries to be matched with a counselor for simple reasons (like not matching me with counselors that can video, etc.) which is discouraging when it takes a great deal of energy and courage when you're not doing well to sign up for a counselor to begin with. However, the counselor I'm working with now seems really great. I think talking with him will be worth the frustration of finding a counselor at the start.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Possible to social distance by being virtual

Short but thorough questionnaire to get started

It makes mental health care accessible to more people and that's something that's VERY important to me

Took me 3 tries to get matched with a therapist that did video

I wish it encouraged me to download the app sooner

I wish it had been more informative about how the videos and call sessions would work

Highly recommended!

By K.E. B., Cleveland, OH, Verified Reviewer

I've received excellent support from the counselor I've connected with through BetterHelp. BetterHelp has allowed me to access quality therapy even when in a financially difficult position and not being covered by my insurance. I love the ability to text my counselor, as well as have video or phone calls. You're able to change your counselor if the one they pair you with isn't quite what you need. They also have group webinars on different topics that you can attend! I really can't say enough about how much I appreciate BetterHelp!

I was nervous to start therapy but I’m so glad I found BetterHelp. I took the survey and was matched with a counselor who has been the perfect match for me. Waste of time and money, made my anxiety worse

By Shelby K., Saint Louis, MO, Verified Reviewer

I signed up, the first week I didn't get to have any sessions. Second week I signed up for a video chat session. The counselor informed me the system wasn't working so she could only do live chat. 16 minutes into the live chat we got booted out and she said "that happens sometimes", so it was a waste of a session, I got nothing out of it. So I told her next time I want an hour-long VIDEO session. 15 minutes before this session she messages me she thought it was a live chat, not video, so she didn't bring her equipment, so did I want to do a live chat or reschedule. When I told her this is ridiculous, this is what happened last time, she showed no remorse and told me to find a new counselor. All of this for $80 a week? No thank you!

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

You can message anytime

I never got a session

The counselor I was assigned was unreliable and irresponsible

How much money I spent on literally nothing

This is what we have needed.

By Brent M., Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Verified Reviewer

Our experience with BetterHelp has been life-changing. We spent thousands of dollars on professional help and not getting any help that worked before we found and tried BetterHelp. We are so glad we tried it. Our counselor, Sheila Kirsky, is incredible, she has helped us more in just a few months than any other professional psychiatrist or therapist has. We even felt hopeful after the very first meeting with her! We are always comfortable during video sessions and we always feel hopeful and on the right path after talking with her. If a new problem arises, she knows exactly how to guide us and help us through it. Our experience with BetterHelp has been exactly what our relationship needed. We are so thankful for BetterHelp.

Four years of BetterHelp has made me a better, happier person

By Sarah B., Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada, Verified Reviewer

I've been with BetterHelp for longer than four years, through a number of different therapists and issues, and for the most part, every therapist I've worked with has really known their stuff and how to help. The financial aid option makes therapy through BetterHelp a lot more accessible, and I've been able to commit to ongoing, permanent therapy in a way that has become an integral part of my life. Thank you, BetterHelp, for providing this service!

Length of Use: 2+ years

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Tons of therapists - don't like yours? Unmatch and try again, as often as you need to.

Financial aid is amazing, up to 40% off instantly.

The chat messaging between sessions is invaluable.

Still feels somewhat expensive when you get started.

A lot of therapists are not in the same time zone as me and getting appointments at reasonable times can be difficult (though most will make accommodations if you ask!)

Packed with value

By Kyle M., Pickering, Ontario, Canada, Verified Reviewer

Overall, this app has been packed with value for me. I’ve been to group therapy and AA meetings before. It can be tense, uncomfortable, especially at first.

I was able to become comfortable with my therapist much quicker this way, since they are video chats from my own home. My comfort zone. I feel this helps me to let my guard down a little easier, so I can actually share enough of the truth so my therapist Hannah can actually give me the help I need.

It is also quite convenient, especially if I'm having a really hard day. Hannah has made herself available when I have been distressed, for an unscheduled video chat. I wouldn’t expect this, it depends on a person's situation, however, it’s much easier to have access to your therapist support this way than I would think is typical with an in-office arrangement.

My GF's car broke down and I was helping her but had a scheduled session. I wasn't going to make it back home in time but because I can use the app on my phone, I was able to still attend the session while sitting in my car.

I run my own company which can be pretty high stress and long hours, but with this app, it makes therapy so much more accessible. If I’m on a job site, I can still have many options to attend my therapy session without having to go too far away from where my work is.

Skeptical but pleasantly surprised

By Jillian G., Las Vegas, NV, Verified Reviewer

I was skeptical at first, being that I prefer being face to face with my therapist and hour-long sessions are a must, but it’s a lot better than I thought. It’s great to share my journal and be able to text if need be. That way my therapist has a better understanding of my issues and can help even more.

Great matching

By B G., New York, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp has been great. I really like the counselor they matched me with. I like the fact that I have the option of switching counselors. I also enjoy their groupinars. At first I didn't think online therapy would work but once I started really opening up I feel it's so much better and more convenient than in-person therapy.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Flexibility to switch counselors

Real time video chat

Journaling and being able to share with counselor

Pricing is decent

Video messaging slots are on 30 min and counselor has to quickly switch off to go to next client, need to increase to 1 hour to give the counselor gaps so they don't have to rush
