Absolute con

By Naveen V., Warwickshire, England, Verified Reviewer

This company is an absolute con. Don't sign up unless you want to waste your money. They give you a lot of promises on their website, and once you sign up, you won't get any notification or reminders or anything for that matter. And their policy of " no refund after 14 days," you go over by one day and they will refuse to give you money back, regardless if you use their app or not. And no numbers to phone them, all you have is this chat button and hope someone replies. They can write anything in a sentence and call it a policy. To sum it up - "absolute con."

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Scam, do not use. They're steeling money!

By Kortney H., Wichita, KS, Verified Reviewer

I decided to start a trial with Noom. After just two weeks they charged me $149.00. I had not used the app and I tried to unsubscribe, but every link I tried to use did not work. Every time I clicked a link to unsubscribe, it took me to a sign in page as if I was a new member. It was running me in circles until I hit two weeks and was charged. After being charged I tried to complain to the company and explain my deal, they told me that their policy did not support refunds and that I was basically SOL.

This company is crap. Please do not use this app unless you enjoy throwing money out the window.

Wish I could give this negative stars. Scam!

By Grace H., Queensland, Australia, Verified Reviewer

Oh how I wish I could give this company negative stars.

Please LISTEN to the NEGATIVE REVIEWS and don't REGRET ignoring them like I do!

In short. The app gives you NOTHING that you can’t just get for free yourself. I received no meal plan or exercise plan and just found out you need to pay EXTRA (on top of CRAZY fees) to get these done? Which means the app is basically a food diary and calorie counter - there are HEAPS of apps that offer that for FREE.

I joined on a month trial - 14 days later they took $159 from my account and upon contacting the team was sent what I now realize is a "copy-paste" message that is sent to everyone who complains about being ripped off.

PLEASE. There are so many better programs out there. This is a scam, a fraud, a rip-off, and will offer you nothing. Save your money and take your motivation and good intentions elsewhere!

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

It's not horrible, but it's not worth it.

By Jennifer B., North Carolina, Verified Reviewer

Are you the sort of person who needs some accountability in order to stick to your goals? Have you tried other programs where you log/track your food in some way and found they didn't give you the push you need to truly stick to the plan? Do you have days where your priorities don't offer you the time to sit down and do some light reading and maybe take some quizzes? If you answered yes to these questions, Noom may not be for you.

Noom is built on the basic principle of tracking your food and sticking to a calorie goal. What makes it a full Weight Loss program, however, is that along with the food tracking, you have daily readings that offer you insight on the psychology of weight gain/loss, a "Goal Specialist" that is supposed to help you navigate the program and succeed, and an assigned group of people at the same stages of the program to talk to as you go. If you've struggled with your weight for some time, and have never tried a weight loss program that teaches you this sort of thing in the past, you may do very well. If you've "been there, done that," and know what you should be doing, how you should be eating, etc., and just aren't succeeding despite that, maybe not.

Details of My Personal Experience:

Daily Readings - At first I found the humor in the daily readings to be enjoyable, but the information to be nothing all that new from what I had learned in my experiences with other programs. There were nuggets of information that were interesting, but not particularly helpful in changing my behaviors, which is ultimately what I was there to do. Still, I trucked along for the first three weeks, reading them every day. Then I got behind by 3 days because of a family emergency. If you are already a person without a ton of free time... this will be the end for you. There is a lot to read each day and once I was behind, I couldn't catch up. This is especially due to the fact that the readings are associated with each "day" of the program so, you'll have to log your food on the current day but scroll back to the days you missed your readings and continue forward to catch up, making sure not to accidentally use that day to log your food too. Confused? Exactly.

Goal Specialist - Ironically, the one facet of the program I really thought was going to be what made Noom work for me over others, turned out to be the worst experience for me. The first problem was that, during the initial few days of the program, it is drilled into you when you will first hear from your GS and what they will do with you that very first interaction. Despite telling you specifically on what day of the program that will happen, they fail to mention that if that day happens on a weekend, it'll actually be 2-3 days later. By then, the program has mentioned two or three other things they should've done with you by then, despite the fact that you haven't even spoken to them yet. Then, when you do, if you mention the items the program has said you need to work on with them, they'll essentially tell you (sort of like the pirate code) that the suggestions are more like guidelines, and that your interactions will function how they see is needed. As someone who is driven by structure, having the daily readings say "today your GS will talk to you about XYZ" and then having my GS not doing that, was a huge turn-off. Further, the program implies that the GS will review your food logs and give you daily feedback, holding you accountable for the decisions you make and helping you to make better decisions. Instead, the GS checks in on their own preset schedule, and asks you open-ended questions about how you think you can set goals and improve. If I was able to motivate myself and hold myself accountable, I wouldn't be paying $100+ for a weight loss program. When I called the GS out on this, explaining that I needed someone to hold me accountable because I was failing to do that with myself, I was informed that the psychology used to build the program is proven and that I, essentially, would only succeed if I really thought for myself. Further, when I finally did get her to look at my food logs (totally not a daily review), I didn't get any useful feedback (see aforementioned "open questions").

Group - This is frankly just an absolute mess. The concept for the group is that a "small" group of people, at exactly the same place in the program, are put together to motivate each other, etc. The very first day, very first post from the group leader, it is emphasized how important it is to "thread" the conversations. Think of a typical online forum, or something like Reddit. Someone posts a topic, people respond in that thread. Well, despite emphasizing that, answers to posted questions are consistently posted as new items, rather than responses in the thread. To make matters worse, as you continue through the program, each day there is a suggestion to "share with the group" something specific. It'd be great if, given the fact that everyone is on the same day of the program, there could be a post created for those topics that everyone could thread under, but no. Instead, you get random statements that by themselves mean nothing, posted as new threads by every member. Going to the group for suggestions, or advice on how to succeed is ultimately a pointless endeavor, as everyone is at the same place in the program you are and the group leader works under the same philosophies as the Goal Specialist, in that they believe in the psychology of making you answer your own questions and being accountable for yourself.

Weight Loss - I joined Noom because with the other program I had been following, for literally the past 17 years off and on, I would plateau and get frustrated. I figured if I switched programs while I was at that plateau, it would spark something in me. Instead, while I lost 5lbs the first two weeks, I then gained 3, lost nothing, gained 2, lost 2, lost nothing, gained 2, lost 1, lost nothing...etc. The same rollercoaster I had been on with the prior program, or while trying this on my own.

Bottom Line: By week 4, I was already done. I was behind in my readings, I was getting absolutely no motivation from my GS, and the group was such a mess it did nothing but irritate me each time I tried to visit it. Ultimately, Noom did nothing for me other than teach me that ultimately, I need to find something that doesn't leave it up to me. I need to be given directions on what to do to succeed, and held accountable. Some people will find Noom works amazingly for them. They'll stay on top of it, they'll find "ah ha" moments in the daily readings, and they'll do amazing. For me, a serial weight loss program failure, it turned out to be nothing different than what I can get from a (free) motivational subreddit and a (free) calorie counting app such as MyFitnessPal. Unfortunately, it wasn't until the 2 weeks mark, when there is no going back (the cost of the program is deducted from your account) that I started to see just how little it was truly offering for the cost.

Beware

By Lorae F., Santa Rosa, CA, Verified Reviewer

Beware. Beware. They sent a receipt with a date of when the trial ended and charged me on that day and I have no way to contact a person. An automated phone recording only and refusals by email. The app is very incomplete with food lists and stupid ways of counting how much water is in a food. Nothing to do with nutrition or health. Totally ridiculous. They don't send any prompts that they are about to charge $99.00 so watch out and cancel early if you are stupid enough like I was to try this for a $1 for a 2-week trial and no way to get a refund short of filing a complaint with PayPal and/or my bank. We'll see if they care about customer service or whether they are just after your money. I think it is of course the ladder. Any other business in the world refunds an unhappy customer. Even if the last day of the trial means that I am not entitled to the last day of the trial or however they decide to split hairs. I have a written receipt that says my trial ends on June 2nd and doesn't that mean the trial ends on June 2nd, not June 1st? Even if I am wrong in calculations does that mean that I have to pay $99.00 for a service they have not provided yet? Is this a $100 mistake? Or will they make good? It is very hard to make contact. I am very unhappy. I should have canceled immediately or better yet never looked at it at all. Any business I have gone to or used will refund on request. So far not this one.

They will auto-renew you after the trial

By Kelly D., Colorado, Verified Reviewer

Hello -

Noom was OK. It was pretty fun for the trial, and the logging with the red, yellow, or green I found helpful. For anyone who has spoken with a nutritionist or done anything like State of Slim, I would say that the things they are telling you equate to nothing new. I really did not appreciate that they did not notify me that they would be charging me after my trial was up, and gave me no subscription options. If you do not stop the subscription before the trial ends they will automatically charge you $99. For a company that portrays themselves as being fun, and nice, and actually caring about the person using their service their billing policies, and refusal to work with you are anything but.

Do NOT purchase.

By Aimee K., North Carolina, Verified Reviewer

I signed up for a trial period and in addition, paid $59.00 for a meal and exercise plan. After almost two weeks of back and forth about the fact that I had never received my meal and exercise plan, I messaged my coach saying that I was probably just going to ask for a refund and it almost made me want to quit the program if everything was going to be that hard. Next thing I knew, my program had been canceled and $29.50 had been refunded to me. I made repeated attempts, first of all, to see exactly why it had been canceled without someone talking to me and second, why I was not being refunded the total of $59.00 when I never received any portion of the exercise or meal plan. Support is like talking to a computer, basically like my computer-generated "coach" that never truly responds to my questions.

Not everything it promises to be.

By Me E., Minneapolis, MN, Verified Reviewer

I tried out Noom for a couple of months before deciding it wasn't working out for me. They tout how well the psychology works for reaching your goals, which for most people I saw using it is losing weight. It didn't help. It relies a lot on your motivation and ability to set goals, but I was using this because I wanted to be told how to lose the weight I wanted to lose, and I thought as a fitness program it would do that. The only thing it pushes for is food moderation through calorie counting and meeting your step goals from what I saw. I had been counting calories on my own, but needed good motivation to continue doing it strictly, and this didn't do that. I also wanted to be pushed to exercise or do additional things to improve my health, but this didn't do that.

Don't waste your money

By Kelsey B., Baltimore, MD, Verified Reviewer

Noom is terrible. I joined for the free trial and was charged $129 because I was a day late to cancel and was not able to be refunded.

The psychology part of it was interesting and inspiring at first, but just became repetitive and boring. Group coaches post random messages throughout the week but don't really start the conversation as they are meant to. Personal goal coaches seem to have scripted questions and responses that are not even worth responding to.

The only positive thing I have to say about the app is that the recipes aren't bad, but they are not anything unique from what can be found with a google search. The rest of the app, like the food logging, weight graphs, step counter, etc. is the same you can get from other free apps.

Do NOT waste your money, and make sure you cancel your free trial on time!

No help at all

By Beatrice P., New Zealand, Verified Reviewer

Hello. I have emailed and emailed all of last week and a bit this week with NO HELP AT ALL from these guys.

I have been trying to log on to my account and have had no success, so I put it down to emailing and have had NO HELP whatsoever.

Do they just take people's money and that's it? NO HELP AT ALL.

Don’t do it

By Georgie B., Melbourne, Australia, Verified Reviewer

Do not subscribe to this service. They charge $159 in the first month and do not warn you. Their food and fitness plan is not useful at all.

Some of their psych lessons are useful, but you could probably find them online.
