Lack of medical supervision

By Gus G., New York, Verified Reviewer

This is to alert the public as to a complete lack of medical supervision with SmileDirect. They will leave you high and dry.

After receiving my trays, I took and sent in pictures, and notified the company my trays weren't fitting well.

Despite being told my doctor would review and get back to me in 48 hours, it's now been two weeks and I've contacted them 4 times starting three days into it. And after this last time, they just sent me an email saying they were starting the cancellation process (but it would take 5 business days for someone to reach out to me).

Unprofessional and lacking of medical supervision. You get what you pay for.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Company Response from Smile Direct Club

Thanks for leaving us a review, Gus. A fully licensed dentist or orthodontist oversees treatment remotely and we have a dental team available if customers have any concerns regarding their aligners or treatment. It can take 5 business days for our dental team to evaluate the picture and provide the next steps, so we're concerned to hear this. I'm following up with you privately to get some additional information from you. Best, Madison.

Lack of physician supervision, no stars from me

By Shondalynn P., Ohio, Verified Reviewer

This might work for some people but not everyone, so please be cautious. My 1st prescription was for 5 months, the 2nd was for 2 months, the 3rd was for 2 months and my teeth are not straight. The 2nd and 3rd script started to pull my teeth completely apart leaving me with gaps in my mouth that I did not have in the 1st place. I am so disappointed in this service plan. I had minor teeth problems, now they are much more worse and I have to seek help from an orthodontist.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Biggest joke, save yourself

By Rania F., Montreal, Canada, Verified Reviewer

Worst company and customer service I have ever dealt with in my entire life. After getting cuts from the horrible quality of these stupid aligners and my jaw dislocated, I was told to stop the aligners, and requested a cancellation. Yet they kept charging me for something I wasn't using when they had the option of putting my account on hold. I have been promised to be contacted by an "account manager" between 3-5 days LAST MONTH. I've been calling and messaging almost every day and the "customer service team" promises me that someone will contact me by the end of the day. FOUR WEEKS LATER, STILL NOTHING. This company doesn't know anything about dental medicine. Their answer to my problem was "go see your local dentist". So easy at taking money, but when it's time to refund, they make it extremely complicated, presuming that all they can do is "write a note" and have no way of directly contacting the account management team. Forget. About. It. You'll be hearing from my bank soon you thieves.

Hi Rania, thanks for taking the time to leave us a review and share feedback with us. We're unable to stop payments if a customer decides to no longer use the aligners. Customers are eligible for a full refund for returning the aligners within the first 30 days. After this point, customers are eligible for a pro-rated refund based on the unused and unopened aligners, but our account management team is there to ensure customers are getting the best resolution based on the circumstances. We would be more than happy to help, so I'm following up with you privately to get some additional information. Best, Madison.

Their payment system sucks

By Rhonda W., Colorado, Verified Reviewer

Not only do I still have a big gap by my back molar that STILL collects food, but when I lost my job and had no money in my account, they kept running it back through - costing me $35 a pop! I called and asked them to stop and they basically told me they would not do so, that I was "under contract".

Never ever let this unscrupulous company put you on autopay. I have never dealt with a company that refuses to work with me before!

Thanks for leaving us a review, Rhonda. Since customers agree to the payment plan, they are contractually obligated to pay the monthly installments on the total aligner cost. Sometimes we can work with the customer to move payment dates. We're more than happy to help with any concerns, so I'll be following up with you privately. Best, Madison.

They don’t care about you anymore after you pay

By Tatsuhito G., Los Angeles, CA, Verified Reviewer

I requested my new aligner and they confirmed it on 11/12/19, they said wait three to four weeks and wear your last aligners until I get my new aligners. Now on 12/17/19, I contacted them because it’s been 5 weeks and they suddenly say they can’t even expect when they are able to ship my new aligners. Come on, they have never notified me until I call them and my last aligner is broken I don’t even know it is working anymore, what they say is go to CVS and buy a boil bite mouthguard, lol. Yes, this is how they treat their customers once we pay.

Horrible SmileDirect

By Jaye A., Ohio, Verified Reviewer

Really really really bad experience!

Horrible customer service. Cut my gums, returned items, still no refund. This company outsources customer service and issues do not get handled. Still waiting for a refund. Representative or supervisor is never available. Be more careful with your money. I'm still waiting to hear back...

Thanks for leaving us a review, Jaye. If customers have any concerns with their aligners, we have a dental team available via phone, email, or chat to answer any questions. If a customer returns their aligners within the first 30 days for a full refund, it will be processed within 10 business days of delivery. I'll follow up with you privately so we can get some additional information and look into this for you. Best, Madison.

Not worth the hassle

By Sean W., Texas, Verified Reviewer

Everything started out okay with my aligners. I wore them for approximately 5 months and my teeth did straighten, however, they needed some additional adjustments. I visited my local SDC store and new aligners arrived at about 4-5 weeks later. They even gave me a free retainer because of the delay. After a few more months I still needed some more adjustments, not a big deal so back to SDC for another scan. I was told I needed some more adjustments and new aligners would arrive 3-4 weeks. That was 8 weeks ago and I still don't have an update on when they will be shipped. Communication from SDC is non-existent and their backend processes must be a mess because I am not the only one who has gone through this based on reviews. For this reason, I would highly recommend trying someone else.

Update

By Dean L., Boston, MA, Verified Reviewer

Still being jerked around by this terrible company. The only thing worse than the product is their customer service/quality control. I've personally convinced three people already to go to another dental company. SDC is without a doubt the worst consumer experience I've ever had to endure.

Don't fall for this! Not even for the price!

By Heidi F., New Jersey, Verified Reviewer

Went in for my free scan. From the start they start pressuring you to sign up but at the same time have a conversation with you that by the end of the consultation, you're signing away. I went in on a Wednesday, and I specifically told the girl that I didn't get paid until that Friday. She said, "no worries, it takes them two business days to process." That was lie #1. They charged my card the next day. Thank god I had money in my account where I didn't end up over-drafting.

A few weeks go by, I receive the aligners. I start wearing them and I see a little bit of a difference. (Backstory: I had worn braces in the past, so my teeth weren't really bad that I wouldn't see a difference right away.) At this point, I get a notification that my first payment will be due. Of course, it doesn't fall on the week that I would get paid, so I decided to call (AHEAD OF TIME) to inform them that I wouldn't have sufficient funds and if it would be possible to change the billing date to TWO days later. Well, that didn't go well. They told me that for the first payment, they couldn't change the date; I had to wait until that processed and for the following month, I had the option to change it. I let it go and then after a few days later, I get a notification from my insurance company saying that I wouldn't be able to get reimbursed because of the type of company SDC was. At this point, there was no reason for me to continue with the aligners as I was paying for orthodontic coverage and not getting my portion refunded.

I called SDC and informed them of the situation and told them that I wanted to cancel. I was told that I had to speak with a manager in order to do that and I would get a call back within 5-7 business days.

Five days went by and nothing. I waited until it had been a week and decided to follow up. When I called, I was told that they were extremely backed up and that it could take up to 10 business days to get a call back, but to not worry. They would put notes in my account to not get charged and I would be put on the priority list for a call back.

Two and a half weeks later, I receive an email from a manager. I had to explain everything again and finally, after the 2nd email, I was finally given the address to return the unused aligners. I go into my credit card statement and then realized they had charged my account. I was furious because I was clearly told that notes were being added and I wouldn't get charged. So I decided to call the finance company to find out why they went ahead and charged my card.

I was told that because of the contract and the two week grace period that they had given me that they had to charge my account because SDC had not informed them that the account was canceled. I then went ahead and called SDC. They told me that once the aligners were received, at that moment is when they inform the finance company of the cancellation but that I would get a full refund but that could take anywhere from 7-10 business days.

I'm so annoyed. All SDC wants is your money! I have worked in the health care field for over 12 years and have NEVER worked anywhere where they would just give patients the runaround. This is such an unprofessional company. Stay away!

Company Response from Smile Direct Club

Mar 23, 2020

Hello Heidi, we are very disappointed to see this as we take pride in our customer service and communication efforts. One should not feel pressured at their SmileShop visit to pay for the aligners as the 3D scans are valid for 90 days. This allows plenty of time to make a decision and request modifications to their smile plan if needed. Purchasing the aligners should be an exciting time, instead of frustrating and a hassle. Returning packages should be easy and receiving a refund should not take weeks to be processed. In order to better assist, I will be reaching out via private message. Best, Valerie

Overcharged me

By Judy M., Orlando, FL, Verified Reviewer

Some of the aligners did not fit. They had too much material and overlapped my teeth. It was like they added extra teeth to the aligner. When I signed up, I was told that if I pay in full at the beginning, the incentive is that the retainers would be free. Well, the retainers are not free. Please don't fall for this scam.

Jun 20, 2018

Hi there, Judy. We're concerned to see your review, as we've never offered a promotion where retainers are free with a single payment. That said, if there is evidence of this offer, we will certainly honor it. In addition, we'd like to clarify that aligner fit issues indicates that the teeth are not tracking as projected, a common problem in any alignment treatment from our aligners to traditional braces. We ask that customers experiencing this issue reach out to our dental team so that we can mediate based on the current course of movement. If you'd like to speak further, please reach out directly.

Had a free 3D scan today

By Avery E., Florida, Verified Reviewer

Today, I had a 3D scan hosted by Shelby. This individual was kind and very knowledgeable on what she had to do with explaining everything on Invisaligns. She helped me understand better about what SmileDirectClub exactly does for people like myself. I'm hoping by posting this review I could possibly win free aligners!

My experience at SmileDirectClub was very promising and I look forward to my smile journey!
