I would love to be able to prompt Noom but...

By Cheryl G., Wisconsin, Verified Reviewer

The program could be great. Between the many typos (which to me shows lack of preparation and true dedication to the program), the consistency of the overbearing jokes and acronyms and lastly the disgusting swearing references, I cannot recommend Noom to anyone.

I love humor, but Noom overdoes it. Too much time spent on jokes and acronyms causes a loss of focus for me.

The core of the program is awesome. Just wish it had a classier format.

Losing and loving it!

By Susanne G., Spring Hill, FL, Verified Reviewer

I am enjoying the Noom experience! Noom brings together the dieting facts and myths that you have been hearing all of your life. By educating and reinforcing valuable insight, you are able to look at a healthy lifestyle in a whole new way. Noom isn't a diet. It's a program to help implement the eating style of your choice so that you can get the most out of it. Noom provides tidbits, examples, and suggestions that are easy to implement through engaging activities and support networking. There aren't do's and don'ts specifically, but choices that are left up to you. In fact, you help design the program you will follow and can "tweak" it at any time. The whole healthier eating style is coming together for me, finally!

Impossible to unsubscribe and they go on charging you

By Milla P., Orlando, FL, Verified Reviewer

I did the $1 trial. Very easy to subscribe. After some days I wanna leave. It is IMPOSSIBLE, somehow. So even though they see you are not using Noom at all, they still charge you the monthly fee of $150 something. I had to void my card of money not to run into the risk of getting charged forever. Need more words?

I've never had an app that I was motivated to open just to better myself

By Michaela M., Rapid City, SD, Verified Reviewer

I absolutely love this app and program. It was super easy to use and get started and I really, REALLY, appreciate the science behind it. I start everything with skepticism, but it did not take me long to trust and "buy in" to what I was reading because it is backed by studies and science. I am truly seeing results and have never realized how much I was not paying attention to my diet. Even though I was already utilizing many of the tips and tricks for portion control, I was still eating far too much via snacks and sides to main plates. I have gained a whole new appreciation for the way my body works, and realizing that trying to say no to a food you love is impossible, so you don't say no and portion control...lol.

The dry humor has made a world of difference and involving some comic relief I have been able to push through some of the longer daily tasks, although I am finding, now that I am in my 5th or 6th week, that tasks are taking a little longer for me to read, which is hard for me to fit in to my busy schedule. One part of the program that I have been avoiding or skipping all together is the group activities and portions. It is impossible for me to keep on top of all the posts and comments, and overall exhausts me. I realize that it is supposed to be a safe space to gain encouragement, but I don't like sharing even the smallest aspects of myself with people I don't know, even if they will never truly know me. I do, however, really like the one on one individual coach and have found that she alone is enough to keep me accountable.

Total scam

By Margaret F., Nashville, TN, Verified Reviewer

They trick you into signing up then make it too difficult to cancel that I had to change my credit card to stop the charges. If you want to be charged forever then go for it, otherwise, stay away. Personal coach Eva was no help in trying to cancel the app even though the website specifically said to message her to cancel. Total scam, a total con. If it were a good product, they would make cancellations easy and give refunds - of course, no refunds!

Nothing to see here folks...

By Mark C., Maine, Verified Reviewer

So there's a tracking app with incorrect nutritional information. I reported it but it was not changed. Every day, you are expected to read a half dozen little articles on weight loss. These were pretty unscientific and tried to be folksy by using terms like "noomalicious." This made it feel like the creators of Noom felt that I was overweight because they thought I was uneducated. This was incorrect and insulting!

I was assigned two "counselors" for individual and group. My individual counselor texted once a week to ask me to choose a goal for the week and to ask how last weeks goal went. There was no excitement about progress or concern about the lack of it. The group was even worse. The moderator seemed to love "ice-breaker" activities like "if you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be?" Weight loss always comes down to portion control, tracking and exercise. There's no need to give your credit card to these Noom folks...

Ok but not great

By Julie C., Ohio, Verified Reviewer

I liked that Noom encouraged deeply understanding one's motivation for weight loss and goal setting. Daily tracking does create awareness of one's food habits, and the curriculum does help create new habits and strategies for staying on track. But, I was expecting more structure around weekly goal setting. The "coaching" significantly under-delivers; I get one message per week, which cannot possibly be truly impactful. Group Coaching was also a disappointment, as was group messaging. My group is not a cohesive community and while we're all on the same "week" not the same day. Because the user cannot easily retrieve her responses to the activities, Noom should recommend users have a notebook handy, or to take screenshots, although is more clumsy. As with anything else, you get out of it what you put in, but I've not had success with Noom. According to the app itself, users should lose weight by tracking food and sticking to daily calorie budget, however, I have not.

The best

By Colleen H., Springfield, OR, Verified Reviewer

I am so happy with my progress. My quality of life is so much better. I feel healthy, energetic, in control. Food no longer is my comforter. Now I eat to be healthy. I'm really having fun with the transformation. My counselors are awesome! The support is perfect for me.

Thanks Noom!

I really want to like Noom, but...

By Michele M., Texas, Verified Reviewer

I really wanted to like Noom. I was fully prepared to use the program and the price tag didn't scare me off.

In 2013, I joined the free weight loss and fitness app My Fitness Pal. I weighed 232 lbs. Over the next 14 months, I lost over 60 pounds and I have been maintaining at 170ish. However, I still have about 30 more pounds to lose. I was bored with my program and was looking for something new and different to help me reach my new weight goal. I was intrigued by the "psychology of weight loss" aspect. I was really excited about giving Noom a try and successfully reach my goal weight of 146lbs.

I was disappointed with Noom from Day 1, and after using Noom for an entire week, hoping to find a reason to continue using Noom, I canceled.

Noom categorizes food into GREEN (Great choice - enjoy), YELLOW (Eat moderate portions) and RED (Limit your portions) groups based on "calorie density" or CD. The lower the CD, the "better" the food. There is no consideration of the nutrients or macros of any given food. So a 240 calorie Clif bar is deemed a RED food, even when eaten after a 1500 calorie 3-hour hike. I kinda like a carb loaded energy boost after a good physical workout. A couple of ounces of lean protein in the form of grilled chicken breast is deemed a YELLOW food. The baked potato and couple of Halo citrus fruit were apparently the only "Great choices" I made on Day 1.

Noom assigned me a daily calorie budget of 1200 calories (the minimum requirement for women according to Harvard Health "Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010) regardless of my activity level, age, weight or desired rate of weight loss.

I kept using Noom, hoping I would get to the part about exercise, nutrition, macros to fuel an active body. Even the activity/exercise function is inadequate. The in-app step counter is woefully inaccurate. I usually log 15,000 daily steps on my Fitbit. That includes a daily 2 mile, 4000 step walk with my dogs. Noom gave me 3500 steps for the entire day.

I might recommend this program for the person who is a complete novice at weight loss, who has no idea even where to start, but I don't think their approach (calorie density) to healthy weight loss is advisable. It would take a helluva lot of kale, carrots, and grapes (low CD "green" foods) to fuel me.

I will return to what works for me - CICO - calories consumed less than calories expended with a focus of plenty of protein, fats and yes, carbs to adequately fuel my body and my activity.

Noom requires some improvements

By Ellen P., Alberta, Canada, Verified Reviewer

I recommend that you wait to sign up with Noom until they have made some improvements. There are several edits required with the content, e.g., typos in the daily tips. In my experience, my assigned individual coach did not clearly describe their role, which now I understand to be to simply send a short app text once per week. The group coach is out of sync with the everyday program and they are asking for additional activities that don't fit with the daily theme - the time required to participate in the daily Noom program fully is significant. Some of the food categories are in error, however, the user can assist by sending an error alert. It is not clear how Zoom are using user data, although they comment that they "have learned from" users. The $61 CDN per month is excessive for what is offered.

Have said that, I have benefitted from having this app for the past 6 weeks. And I am hopeful that the improvements I have made to my nutrition, weight-loss, activity, and self-awareness will be sustainable.

Good program so far

By Noelle B., Nova Scotia, Canada, Verified Reviewer

HI, it's a good program so far. I find some days I am not able to record my meals as early as I want, but I am trying to keep up with it. I like the information provided each morning for me to preview, and the mini quizzes help as well.
