About BetterHelp

Launched in the summer of 2013, BetterHelp is the world’s largest online counseling platform that promises to help anyone with an internet connection talk to licensed, professional therapists.

If you’re experiencing any life’s challenges (who hasn’t at some point?), BetterHelp’s network of 1,200+ licensed and board-accredited counselors can help you navigate them using your computer, tablet, or mobile phone. Simply log in wherever you are and communicate with your counselor at your own pace—whether it’s day or night, weekday or weekend, you’ll always have a private, safe, and secure environment to share anything you want.

Because of these benefits, BetterHelp claims to have helped more than 250,000 customers to date.

It’s no secret that most of us could use counseling at one point or another, but considering how inconvenient in-office sessions can be—not to mention the high prices—many of us don’t seek out the care we need. Has BetterHelp’s online-only model changed all of this? Are they comparable to an in-office counseling session? How affordable are they?

Let’s dive right in and find out how you can match up with one of BetterHelp’s counselors:

How Does BetterHelp Work?

To begin your journey, you’ll need to start by spending 15 minutes or so answering BetterHelp’s fairly in-depth questionnaire. This will help the company assess your needs and match you with an appropriate counselor.

First, you’ll begin by answering questions about your gender, age, and marital status, if you’ve ever been in therapy before, and your current physical health (good, fair, poor). Then, you’ll rate your current sleeping habits, as well as your financial status, followed by a series of “over the past 2 weeks, how often have you been bothered by any of the following problems?” questions:

  • Little interest or pleasure in doing things
  • Feeling down, depressed, or hopeless
  • Poor appetite or overeating
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Anxiety or panic attacks

Finally, you’ll rate your preferences for a counselor’s specific areas of expertise on a scale of least to most important. This includes addiction, LGBT-related issues, eating disorders, and many more.

Finally, you’ll create an account by entering your name, email address, password, and credit card number (more about this in the Cost section below).

Based on what you entered during this process, you’ll be matched with a counselor “who fits your objectives, preferences, and the type of issues you are dealing with,” generally within 24 hours.

What happens after you’re matched with a BetterHelp counselor?

The BetterHelp Therapy Process

According to the company, all BetterHelp counselors are “licensed, trained, experienced, and accredited psychologists (PhD / PsyD), marriage and family therapists (MFT), clinical social workers (LCSW), or licensed professional counselors (LPC).” Each will have a Master’s or Doctorate degree in their respective field, along with 3 years and 2,000 hours of hands-on experience.

Important note: BetterHelp is upfront when claiming, “Please note that your provider won't be able to make any official diagnosis, to fulfill any court order or prescribe medication.” Also, remember that these providers are not employees of BetterHelp, so the company doesn't oversee them professionally.

Once you’re matched with a counselor, you’ll have 24/7 access to a dedicated virtual “room” where you’ll be able to communicate privately and securely, simply by logging in to any internet-connected device. This is where you’ll write about what’s going on and ask questions about things that are troubling to you.

After posting a message, your counselor will log in to this same room and “respond with feedback, insights, and guidance.” How quickly your counselor responds can vary depending on may factors, although most reviews we read (more in a moment) claimed that they received responses within hours, or even minutes. As part of your subscription, you’ll be able to communicate with your counselor this way as much as you like.

If you feel that your counselor isn’t a good match, you can request another at no charge. If you feel comfortable though, you’ll begin learning how to move past your issues, make positive change in your life, and accomplish your goals.

How Much Does BetterHelp Therapy Cost?

We’ll be honest: We read about a lot of different pricing options during our BetterHelp research. For example, one part of their website claims you’ll only pay $45 per week, although the fine print on our ordering page indicated we’d pay $70 per week. Elsewhere, we found some customers claiming it costs as little as $35 per week.

Furthermore, BetterHelp’s website indicates that all subscriptions are billed on a monthly basis, although one recent reviewer claimed that you can choose between weekly, monthly, or quarterly options.

For clarification on both these issues, we emailed customer support at contact@betterhelp.com. Here’s the answer we received:

“We do offer several subscription plans with different subscription periods and pricing points. You can select your preferred plan by clicking on your name at the top-right corner, clicking "Account Settings" and then clicking "Change Plan". Please note that we're also offering financial aid for people who can't afford the service.”

Again though, you’ll first have to sign up for a trial and (presumably) pay the $280 before being given the option to change your subscription plan or payment schedule.

Pro tip: All new BetterHelp members are automatically enrolled in a 7-day trial, which can be canceled without obligation for any reason. However, it’s important to note that the company will charge your credit card for one month upfront. Then, if you cancel your subscription within 7 days, this money will be refunded.

After the initial 7 days, your account will automatically roll over to a recurring subscription, which can be canceled by logging into your account, visiting the Settings page, and clicking the Cancel Subscription link.

In addition to messaging in your “room,” BetterHelp’s counselors can be reached through 20-minute phone sessions. The first session in each billing cycle is covered by your membership fees, which increases to $29 per session thereafter.

Considering these prices and ease of access, are customers singing praises for BetterHelp?

Are There Any Customer Reviews for BetterHelp?

On Yelp, BetterHelp had an average rating of 4 stars at the time of our research, based on 14 reviews. The vast majority seemed pleased with the fact that you can post messages about your thoughts and feelings at any time, which is more convenient, since you won’t have to wait until a formal counseling session. Also, many felt that the anonymity allowed them to open up more.

BetterHelp, Based out of Sunnyvale, CA, also had an A- Better Business Bureau rating based on 27 closed complaints (as of 5/10/16). Overwhelmingly, the most common complaint referenced being charged immediately after signing up for a free trial (which we addressed in the previous section).

BetterHelp’s Android app had a 3.3-star rating on Google Play based on nearly 600 reviews, and a 4.5-star iTunes rating based on 28 reviews. Regarding the app only (not the counseling service), most seemed to find it simple and effective, although many didn’t like the fact that it doesn’t store login credentials.

Writing for the Wall Street Journal, Joshua Fruhlinger tried BetterHelp and a similar competitor named Talkspace. With both services, he experienced fast communication and felt like he got to the root of his issues faster than he would have through traditional once-weekly sessions. Joshua tried 2 therapists with each service and had similarly positive experiences each time.

Although The Atlantic didn’t actually test out BetterHelp’s services, one professional they interviewed had some hesitations about the format:

“Some important aspects of counseling are lost when the services are not provided face-to-face,” says Joyce Marter, the president of the Illinois Mental-Health Counselors Association.”

Finally, another mentioned that in any type of online environment (regardless of the security measures put in place), information is always susceptible to hackers:

“Clients and clinicians both need to be aware that good hackers can access anything online, regardless of industry security standards,” says Christy Leaver, a licensed clinical social worker with a counseling practice in Lexington, Kentucky.”

Is BetterHelp a Better Way to Get Therapy?

Just like any other service or product, “better” is a highly subjective term. For example, if you prefer to have face-to-face contact with a counselor, then BetterHelp might not be a “better” option for you. Or, if you prefer to write out your concerns as they arise in a largely anonymous format, then BetterHelp might be right up your alley.

From a price perspective, though, it’s easy to see that at $70 (or less) per week—with an unlimited amount of contact with your counselor—BetterHelp might provide a much better bargain than traditional in-office counseling sessions. Again though, whether or not this translates into a better value depends on your needs and preferences.

Either way, just remember that BetterHelp does not specialize in crisis intervention, so if you require immediate attention in order to avoid harming yourself or others, they shouldn’t be your first option. In fact, one of the more common complaints we encountered during our research was that customers were turned away after submitting their questionnaire. If this happens to you, just remember that there are better avenues for you to seek care.

Even if you don’t sign up for a BetterHelp subscription, their website is chock full of guides that can help you understand and work through common issues like anxiety, depression, grief, and more.

Finally, although BetterHelp might be the largest online counseling network, keep in mind that they’re not your only once, as you also have popular competitors like Talkspace, Breakthrough.com, BlahTherapy.com, 7Cups.com, and many others. Just remember that not all of these provide the same attention to detail and licensed counselors (some could be considered “lifestyle guidance” instead of formal counseling) as BetterHelp.

  • An excellent service

My counselor is very attentive, kind, and helpful. What makes BetterHelp great is what you get for the price. You can reach out to the counselor at any time. During day hours, she responds to your post promptly. Unlike most counseling, you have got to schedule getting help, and that can be stressful. It doesn't replace face to face help, however, I find it to be a good supplement (when dealing with important issues) to traditional counseling.

  • Quick access and ease, to amazing and dedicated counselors!

    • Los Angeles, CA,
    • May 19, 2017

I signed up the night before for this application, and I got a match literally within 10 hours! It was so fast and thorough, and I really enjoyed the counselor they paired me up with. It was a great match, and the counselor's availability was amazing because she was able to fully accommodate my extremely busy and hectic schedule. My counselor made it a priority to adjust and be flexible with my schedule, and most importantly, checks up on me frequently throughout the week to make sure I'm genuinely ok.

The care, passion, and effort these counselors put in to make a positive contribution to their patient's lives are truly remarkable. BetterHelp truly saved my mental state of mind to allow me to find inner peace and happiness. Thank you BetterHelp!

  • Two thumbs up

Very helpful and convenient service. I can access a counselor so much easier and often than in-person sessions. The counselor is attentive, considerate, and thorough with listening to concerns and offering quality advice. It has helped me greatly when I was going through a tough time in my life.

  • It has helped me

    • Naples, Italy,
    • May 9, 2017

First things first: I had never tried counseling in my life before trying BetterHelp. So, I have no idea of how in-office counseling looks like.

I have read in many other reviews that the service might be stealing your money if you aren't careful. In my personal experience, I had read that they would charge my card automatically in case I didn't cancel my subscription, so that didn't surprise me, and honestly doesn't look any different to me than how many other online service providers work (Amazon Prime, Netflix, Spotify subscriptions, to name three).

Having the possibility to write to your counselor every day has been really useful to me. I was a bit skeptical at first, but I was having a lot of grief-related issues at the time of my subscription, and the counselor that was matched to me was clearly very professional and an expert on the matter. I was able to fix many things and to get a better perspective on my life in a very short time, finding the energy to take action every day in a moment when it looked like I was on the floor and would never get up again.

In short, BetterHelp has changed my life for the better. I don't know if I'll keep using it for a long time (I'm currently in my fourth month), but the results are so far convincing me that it is money very well spent.

  • For all the complainers

Obviously, you didn't read thoroughly. I understood from the first moment I visited the site that I would be billed weekly, and that on the first month they would charge a lump sum. I hate when bad reviews that were written by ignorant people affect how people judge a product. You have to read with your eyes open.

  • BetterHelp is better than your therapist/counselor

    • Toronto, Ontario, Canada,
    • May 4, 2017

For starters, 24/7 and unlimited service for a price that cannot be beat.

Second, the staff is extremely kind and supportive. They gave me a personal email with a free t-shirt as I've worked with them for a while now.

Third, they have amazing therapists/counselors. I've been seeing my counselor for almost a month now, and she is the kindest and most understanding person ever. I had in person therapists/counselors and I was unable to open up to them the way I opened up to my counselor on BetterHelp.

Fourth, they have an amazing platform that's extremely easy to use and works great on your phone too.

Lastly, I suggest you try it; you don't have much to lose. What you pay for a month is what you'll pay a therapist/counselor for 2-3 sessions, versus unlimited sessions on BetterHelp.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

  • Phenomenal Extraordinary Service

BetterHelp is a wonderfully amazingly awesome service as a website for counseling for people who are struggling and may need help. I was matched up with a few counselors then had the option to change and that third time I found the right one. Now my counselor and I have been working together on my issues and I have gain some strength and empowerment because of her! She is amazing and I love her. I would definitely recommend her to anyone and also my friend's that includes the BetterHelp website also. Thank you so much BetterHelp!

    Great service!

So far this service is just great. I really love the ability to write what's on my mind at the time it's going on. I'm seeing a therapist every two weeks, but receiving feedback, even if it's hours later, is so much better than waiting for 14 days to talk to someone. By the time I get to my next appointment, I've forgotten about the episode, and the therapist tends to direct me in ways that are not addressing my most serious issues.

In just a few days on Betterhelp.com, I've been able to say more about the important issues that are impacting my life right now than I've been able to address in months of standard therapy. Maybe it's just me, but I feel more comfortable writing down what's going on in my head than I do talking about it. Also when I'm face to face I only have 50 minutes to accurately state what I want to address most and, like I say, the therapist often steers the conversation elsewhere. Whereas on Betterhelp.com I can take my time writing and editing what I have to say until I feel that my situation and feelings have been properly described. And it's also easier to describe a situation if I'm currently experiencing it than it is two weeks later.

I love this service. Thank you so much.

    Excellent Service!

    • Woodstock, New Brunswick, Canada,
    • Apr 25, 2017

I was a bit skeptical of an online counseling service but I knew I needed help and where I live, there are not many options so it was super happy when I was matched with Nicole! You answer some very short super easy questions and they match you with a counselor who is knowledgeable in that area.

I have never had counseling before and had zero idea what to expect but she is awesome. Just one session with her made a huge difference! I plan to continue for a while because I think I have a lot to really work out in my head. Being able to just talk to her and her provide awesome easy solutions is huge to me. Thank you for providing an awesome service!

I read a few reviews before committing and people were saying they were being charged, etc. One review I read hit the issue “People are not reading what they are agreeing to.”

You can not expect a good service and a real service for free. These people are professionals and went to school for this education and deserve to be paid for their time and service.

You get 7 days free so that you can make sure it's for you and then you do pre-pay for 4 weeks at a time as a default but you can adjust this in your account and can cancel at any time.

They also explain this to you your 1st live session. They do live sessions either through video, phone or messages. I have done 2 sessions via the phone and I really like it.

The counselor does not know your number. The system calls you and connects you to them so no long distance for you. I so far think it's an awesome system and am very thankful. If you live in areas with very little sources of help or embarrassed to "go to" a counselor then this is an awesome option!

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

    They're abusing depressed people

    • Germany,
    • Apr 21, 2017

On January 10, I wanted to give it a try because there was a one-week free trial. When I was enrolling, I was asked to give my credit card details to pay $1, saying that that money is to be sure that everyone was serious about the counseling. I thought that was okay.

They immediately found me a counselor who was very nice to me. But in 3-4 days I understood online counseling wasn't good for me. So I stopped using their service in less than a week.

This week, I realize that they charged me $135 in March. So they started taking my money on March 1st, $45 weekly. I immediately canceled my membership and wrote to their customer service. The customer service is offering to pay me the last payment only, that means $45, and adding that they don't check if I get any help or not.

I can understand that they have policies, but I am very sure that I didn't accept to pay $45 weekly because I don't have that much money! I'm a student, and this is a huge amount of money for me. The only reason that I gave my credit card information was paying the $1 at the enrolment.

I think they aren't honest. I think they waited for a while and then they gave it a try to get my money, and they could do this for three weeks until I realized that I was getting robbed.

Now I kindly ask them to pay $135 back to me. Because they weren't clear about their policies, and they're abusing the people who need help and who are in a depression.

I could have recommended them to my friends if they didn't do that to me.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

You obviously didn't thoroughly read the website then. When I first checked it out, I understood I would get a bill weekly.

    Love the service

    • Orlando, FL,
    • Apr 16, 2017

I really love the service and my Dr. has been amazing. I would highly recommend these services to anyone and appreciate that this service is available and offers so much flexibility. I reached out to other services before deciding on BetterHelp and the wait time seemed to be forever, and the concerns of insurance and payment were very impersonal. With BetterHelp, I felt I got the immediate need to talk to someone out, and I felt heard. I feel I have a path and Dr that is going to get me back to a healthy, happy and balanced life goal. Thank you BetterHelp!
