Summary

BetterHelp is an online counseling platform that will pair you with a professionally licensed counselor. Access to counseling can be scheduled at any time, anywhere, and through any smart device. The efficacy of BetterHelp is linked to provider skill and intervention protocols, but there are some drawbacks if you fall into certain categories of needs and it’s not covered by your insurance provider.

A BetterHelp newbie

By Victoria C., Chicago, IL, Verified Reviewer

I have only been using it for about two weeks, but I feel very comforted when my counselor messages me and is waiting to listen to my problems. I really like how I can just send a message rather than meeting face-to-face or talking on the phone as those hype up my anxiety, but through the app, I feel at ease. I look forward to using BetterHelp more and further learning how to cope.

A good alternative, reachable and easy

By Paula T., Düsseldorf, Germany, Verified Reviewer

I came to BetterHelp because looking for a psychologist in the city was pretty much a nightmare. A huge waiting time, a lot of restrictions, and so on. BetterHelp was a good alternative since it is very fast, the counselor is "tailored" to your problem, and it is flexible. Moreover, having the therapy in your mother tongue is a great advantage. The time difference can be an issue when something urgent is needed though.

BetterHelp is an affordable alternative to face-to-face therapy.

By Justina E., Corydon, IN, Verified Reviewer

I needed help dealing with anxiety and depression. I felt that face-to-face therapy was too hard as I have social anxiety. I watch a lot of YouTubers that have anxiety and depression, and they recommended BetterHelp.

I decided to try and I am extremely glad that I did. You fill out a questionnaire to help match you with a counselor, and you can even pick the traits that you want your counselor to have. Then, you sign up and wait to be paired with your counselor. It's as easy as that. I was paired with Lisa Cooper within 10 minutes. She has been a lifesaver. She has helped me deal with anxiety, depression, and many other things that I have experienced in my life. You will have a message board that is open 24/7, and your counselor will respond as much as they can. She responds in a timely manner.

I would definitely recommend BetterHelp to anyone who needs counseling. It is affordable and convenient.

BS

By Frank N., South Africa, Verified Reviewer

They rope you in like they will give a free session, then after writing heart and soul, they drop the charge on you. They need to be more transparent with their business model and explain that you want help. Pay up jack...

Amazing

By Vincent E., New York, Verified Reviewer

I loved the app and loved my counselor, what amazed me, at least through my experience, is that my counselor always made time for me. There would be moments where something horrendous happened and I would be filled with anxiety and depression and my counselor went out of her way to talk to me, even scheduling late night appointments. I highly recommend BetterHelp and I hope it brings everybody some form of guidance and fulfillment in their lives.

Better find help elsewhere

By Aya L., Jamaica, Verified Reviewer

I hate this company even though they refunded me all my money. After being in "therapy" for a month, I got an automatic message saying I didn’t qualify for counseling via this media. My "therapist" wasn’t even kind enough to tell me this even though we spoke the night before.

I now use Talkspace, and though you don’t get as many frills as BetterHelp, they are compassionate and honest.

If you need help, you’d better run from BetterHelp. They are a rip-off, they charge you the first of each month but you can hardly get response thereafter. Not helpful at all.

I wish I could give no stars.

Heck no, I wouldn’t recommend to a friend or enemy.

What the mental health community needs

By Rebecca W., Los Angeles, CA, Verified Reviewer

I have experienced first hand the difficulty in scheduling and finding the right counselor. For some reason, the availability and scheduling for sessions is often difficult, and we really don’t need an unnecessary roadblock to get the support we need. From being scheduled weeks out to having to call at specific times to schedule the next appointment, etc., it’s not a very reliable industry at times.

Enter BetterHelp. You input your information and do a questionnaire once. You get matched with a therapist and can change at any time. You have options of type, phone call, video call sessions from the comfort of your own home, and lots of time slots to choose from. It’s what this is dusty needs. Not to mention there are some amazing specialists on here! What a wonderful program, I’m so happy to have it.

Going to counseling in my pajamas

By Jenni H., Brownwood, TX, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp is an online counseling website. You sign up, answer some questions about why you're there, and you get paired with a counselor. You can chat with your counselor in a private "chat room," via phone calls or via video calls that can be scheduled out. You can also choose a different counselor if the one you get paired with doesn't really fit with your needs. I chose to use BetterHelp as I am dealing with depression at being 35 years old and being bedridden with various physical ailments. This also means that it is physically incredibly difficult for me to leave the house to go see a counselor. By using BetterHelp I can write a note to my counselor any time day or night, I get professional counseling without having to get out of bed, and I get to talk to my counselor as often as I want. I am not limited to a certain number of visits that my insurance would most likely have limited had I gone to see a counselor in an actual office. BetterHelp is also cheaper than it would have been otherwise.

I will say that the counselor that I was originally paired with was pretty awful; just read from a script, wasn't really reading anything I'd actually written, and just gave me worksheets to fill out. But it was very easy to get another counselor and this time I got to choose from a selection of counselors; I got to read about them, what they specialized in, and a little about them personally.

I would basically recommend BetterHelp to anyone who is too busy, is physically unable to make it, is maybe embarrassed or uncomfortable, or even doesn't quite have the money to go see a counselor in an office. You can cancel your "membership" at any time and only stay as long as you need to. It's counseling on your terms.

I knew I needed help...it took a long time to accept that.

By Angela D., New Jersey, Verified Reviewer

I knew I needed help because I couldn't do it on my own anymore. I couldn't afford a more traditional approach financially or due to my insane schedule. BetterHelp allowed me to transition counseling into my life when I was ready to talk. Which I am was not always ready to talk or am not always. It's hard. It's hard work to face yourself and figure things out. I can only expect so much out of counseling because a lot of the work are things I need to do myself and learn, but the ability to talk about things I can't/may not be able to talk to other people about and get feedback/confirmation on my thoughts is helpful to moving on in my life. So just don't give up and you will know when you're ready.

Great alternative to face-to-face therapy

By Larry E., Nebraska, Verified Reviewer

I never had the money to fully engage in regular weekly or monthly therapy sessions. Another problem was living in a small rural town, where it is even harder to find such help. So when one of my favorite YouTube bloggers suggested I try BetterHelp, I thought I would give it a shot. And I am so glad I did.

The initial first-month session's cost was very reasonable and something I could afford. My assigned counselor was very understanding of my issues and offered me many ways to help improve my situation. I can truly say that after only one month of working with BetterHelp, I feel like a completely different person. I am so much more confident when dealing with others now and can better tackle my day to day challenges much more successfully. I highly recommend their services to anyone who needs someone to talk to about their lifelong struggles.

Excellent service

By Nnekka R., Marion, NC, Verified Reviewer

This is a really good service and very convenient. I use it to message my counselor, and I can get to read and reply on my own time. I don’t feel regulated too, you only get this amount of time, and the rest will have to wait. With this service, I can message my counselor at any time, and I know that he will get back to me.

Enthusiastic recommendation

By Sarah S., Oregon, Verified Reviewer

I have been in treatment for 25 years. Long story, but it turns out I've had MS my whole life. The numbness I experience is not Hysteria. Suffice it to say, I have had counselors who have been providing varying degrees of help in an impossible situation for them and me. I could not be more relieved for finding BetterHelp. It has been difficult looking for help and not finding it. Erica, my counselor, hears me and does not shame me. Makes me feel safe. I am in a different place, suddenly, with my diagnosis. She helps me deal with myriad issues as they appear daily. I am very grateful to have found BetterHelp. Finding it very helpful, indeed.

Amazing, easy service

By Erin P., Philadelphia, PA, Verified Reviewer

I’ve had a therapist that I spoke with once a week on a couch, yet I’m not sure if it was the therapist or lack of time to counsel, but it wasn’t as effective as BetterHelp.com. This service provided me a supremely qualified therapist with a doctorate degree (can’t remember which one psychologist or psychiatrist) that was kind yet honest and helped guide me to a much better place emotionally. I will continue to use BetterHelp.com throughout the rest of my life for the great therapist I was matched to work with; it’s ease of use and flexibility.

Whenever I need to express my thoughts, my therapist is there within 24 hours with great attention to my thoughts or problem...No matter the day or time...I don’t know where you can get better help emotionally. I can’t thank my therapist and BetterHelp.com enough for helping deal with the traumas and emotional growth I needed to heal from in my life.

A path to the help I need

By Alex C., Indiana, Verified Reviewer

I am so thankful for BetterHelp. I've wanted to do therapy before but never could get up the nerve to do it. With a few very challenging life issues recently I've known it was time. BetterHelp made it easier, and talking to Ranalda has been so helpful so far. I'm looking forward to diving it more and feel blessed to say I am making forward progress with the help of a great therapist.

Being able to open up with someone has been so great. It's also affordable, I never thought I would be able to seek help but with this app, it has made it easy for me. Anytime I have something in mind at any time, I can send an email and get the help I need. I don't have to wait until I video chat with them, it is honestly great. I have been doing this for two weeks now, and I have learned and shared so much. Don't put it off if you are thinking of seeking help.

User experience

By Vesna S., Serbia, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp has offered me a free trial of seven days. When you sign up, you fill in the quick survey in order to be paired up with the right licensed counselor. The response was quick, and I've got a chance to exchange messages, book live video sessions or have telephone sessions booked available. The counselor I was paired up with proved to be the professional, understanding and worked toward helping out with my issues. A few days upon registering at the site, I was contacted via email by the site staff service representative checking about how I'm doing and letting me know that I can contact them if there's anything they can do to improve the experience.

If you feel or think you should change your counselor, that option is available to you, free of charge as well. After your free trial expires, if you haven't canceled your subscription, you are billed according to the plan you have chosen. You can cancel your subscription at any time.

The counselor I was paired with proved to be the right match for me, working with me to help me find the right approach to my issues which has happened quickly due to the number of messages exchanged in the first few days. What I really like about the service is the availability 24/7, being able to have as much contact as I needed for as long as I needed it with a licensed professional who has helped me get through major depression episode in a very effective way due to counselor's availability, patience, care, and understanding.

Affordable help and good for travelers!

By Shar S., Costa Rica, Verified Reviewer

Pros:

I travel regularly and work online, so BetterHelp has been convenient for me. It's marketed as a 24-hour service so you can message at any time, and receive a response in one day. You can select appointments from a schedule, so it's easy to match to your time zone. The counselors are real counselors and are all independent contractors, so it's up to you to find someone that understands your particular issues. I think it's helpful to have an idea of what you want out of counseling and ask them to match you with someone who has explored those issues therapeutically. You could also browse and choose your preferred counselor.

My counselor has been really good so far, and I look forward to continuing the process with her. She checks on me sometimes when I haven't been in touch and also leaves me encouraging messages after the sessions. I really enjoy using the app because it's been helping me to use it on my computer no matter where I am.

Also, I suffer from social anxiety and have found it useful to tell her when I feel anxious, and she never makes it seem like it's a weird thing and usually makes me feel completely normal about it, while still acknowledging my feelings. Very grateful to have found her through BetterHelp.

Cons:

They're marketed as "unlimited live sessions," but I think that is somewhat misleading. The services are much cheaper than regular counseling, so understandably I think it's much harder for most counselors to offer a live session more than a once a week. So don't come with the expectation that it really is unlimited, but in saying that, most people aren't looking for more than once a week anyway.

The app itself is good, but sometimes it's buggy. I have trouble connecting to the video sessions from my mac because the "invite" doesn't reach me. Your experience depends on the counselor you have, so pick wisely.

Excellent for busy schedules

By Michelle S., Fort Wayne, IN, Verified Reviewer

I have only had my counselor for about a week. Even though it’s only been a week, we have corresponded several times. It’s been great! There is no way with my kids and crazy schedule I would be able to find time to go sit in front of someone for an hour at a time. This just works perfectly!

Subtle and kind

By Andrew B., Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Verified Reviewer

I’ll tell you; I’m a relapsed addict who has been clean for seven years. I lived a lie for almost three years. When my relapse came out, I was devastated, ashamed, and felt so much guilt and self-loathing. Oddly after my wife who said she could work through my relapse of drugs and infidelity but only if I sought counsel. So I did. I found BetterHelp and I was paired with Steve. I’m comfortable sharing with him. It isn’t always easy but I’ve been through a lot worse, and I can’t do a facility-based program, I've been there done it. This fits me, even if I can’t save my marriage. I’ll still talk to Steve on BetterHelp.

BetterHelp actually means better help

By Nicole M., California, Verified Reviewer

I have struggled for months in obtaining accessible and therapeutic resources. I was originally looking into another online counseling website when I saw a social media post about BetterHelp on Instagram. The person who posted was endorsing BetterHelp after utilizing their services and offering a one-week free trial. It is one of the best decisions I could have made for myself.

So far, I am really enjoying and appreciating the support I have been getting through my therapist at BetterHelp. I just started, and I already feel connected to my therapist, and feel that they have useful and effective tools and resources to offer. The community and support manager even reached out to me personally, shortly after beginning counseling to see how the experience was going. The format of the website is easy to use, and private. If you're looking for an effective, affordable counseling modality, and you don't mind accessing these resources through an online format, I would highly recommend BetterHelp.

Not so good

By S K., Texas, Verified Reviewer

I filled out everything and I was completely honest. The entire idea of my application, was yes, I did need help and I have a terrible state of mind when it comes to anything, (to be honest). Using BetterHelp, I hoped I could finally talk to someone about how I feel and what I'm going through but once they emailed me and told me "BetterHelp will not help you," I felt more hopeless than in the start. It kind of broke my heart, to be honest.

As the title states, BetterHelp has been VERY helpful to me. Great experience so far

By Erin R., Concord, NH, Verified Reviewer

I am extremely grateful to Debra and to BetterHelp for this platform. I'm still new to this, but it has already been so helpful. I have anxiety around discussing things we're talking about in person, and around therapy in general. This format is much more casual, I can show up on my schedule, when I am ready to open up, on my terms. That's huge for me. Thank you so much!

BetterHelp bettered my life

By Donovan S., Los Angeles, CA, Verified Reviewer

I am a big fan of BetterHelp. I have been using it for the past 10 months, and my life has measurably improved. I’ve gotten a job, I’m gone in and out of relationships, dealt with trauma, and many other challenges. Through it all, BetterHelp has been there.

I have recommended BetterHelp to many friends, and in my experience, how much someone benefits really depends on what they expect from the experience. BetterHelp is not a quick-fix. It is the opportunity to enter into a long, spread-out conversation with a therapist about your daily struggles and challenges as they happen and when you are in the moment. At least once a day, I face some challenge, and while I am still fresh with those emotions, I share my thoughts and feelings with my counselor. My counselor always responds within 24 hours in a way that helps me reestablish calm, take perspective, and better prepare myself for similar challenges going forward. It has been this process, every day, for 10 months, that has really turned my life around. If you expect your counselor to respond instantly or to make you feel “fixed” right away, this is not going to do that (but then again, nothing will do that for you). So understanding how this process works, committing to it or at least a few months, and then using it every day, that is the way to go, and that is the way to make your life better. Or at least that’s what this one humble user thinks and has experienced for himself.

Great experience

By Hasani D., Chicago, IL, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp has been great. I’ve always been skeptical about therapy, but I really needed it to get me through a difficult time. It was the most affordable option for me, but that doesn’t take away from the quality. I had plenty to do as far as drills and worksheets to understand myself better.

I can’t say enough good things and I would recommend this for anyone going through a difficult time. Don’t do it alone, it’s much easier to have someone there to help you through it.

I love BetterHelp!

By Kristin G., Kerhonkson, NY, Verified Reviewer

I was skeptical about doing therapy through an app, but I had heard BetterHelp recommended on my favorite podcast - The Mental Illness Happy Hour - so I thought I’d give it a chance. Also, I was being a caregiver and my presence was needed around the clock, so not having to go somewhere was attractive. After a brief questionnaire, they paired me with my counselor, Nyakya, and I have been so happy that they did. She is experienced with helping caregivers and counseling no people in recovery, which I am also. I really love our sessions and she has helped me navigate the death of my husband and life thereafter. I have been so happy with BetterHelp. I highly recommend anyone to try it!
