BetterHelp is an online counseling platform that will pair you with a professionally licensed counselor. Access to counseling can be scheduled at any time, anywhere, and through any smart device. Good in theory doesn't equate to good in practice.

By Haley H., Cleveland, OH, Verified Reviewer

Getting therapy is hard, period. Firstly, you need insurance. Your schedule needs to work. You have to wait several months to find a specialist, then you may find out you do not click with them.

I was needing a little help and due to schedule constraints, finding it was pretty much impossible. BetterHelp was my next best option. So I tried it for a couple of months. The therapist I was matched with was pretty good, and I enjoyed being able to write out my thoughts to gather myself. I felt really good about it for the first month.

The second month, I was finding this app to be a little bit of what I was afraid of happening. Firstly, the rate you needed to pay for the services kept increasing. Second, the nature of having an application like this means that you innately have less boundaries. I think if I was really in the midst of a crisis, this may have been beneficial. The constant ability to have contact with your counselor became more of an annoyance rather than a benefit.

If you really enjoy privacy like I do, this is actually not your best option. You have the privacy of being behind a screen, but you never really get left alone. Unlike talk therapy, you can't leave everything in the therapy room. You have to drop everything to be in therapy mode when your counselor messages you, no matter what you're doing--this became bothersome after awhile. I got to the point where I was dreading talking with the therapist because the contact was so frequent I really ran out of things I needed to talk about. For most people like myself, I would recommend this as a last resort.

The issue is that they actually have very good therapists and the idea is wonderful and well-intentioned. However, the nature of a counseling application really does not utilize these therapists in the most optimal way. Good in theory, but in practice, the application turns out to be intrusive, inconvenient, and cumbersome.

If you need an option and have exhausted yours, however, I would recommend this. I'm glad I tried it, but it's not for me. There are people who can switch gears easily, but for me, I was never in the mindset to do therapy if I was receiving messages from my therapist at random hours of the day.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Amazing

By TNisha S., South Carolina, Verified Reviewer

I was never comfortable with the idea of going to see a counselor. I didn't think it would help me. But since I started working with my counselor, I see the idea of therapy in a different light. Better Help is a way to get the support you need from anywhere. From video chats, to messaging my counselor every other day, it has been a great help. I'm a busy person, and I don't have much time to go see someone. Video chats are a life saver, and very convenient. The counselors are there to help, they won't judge you or make you feel uncomfortable. It's a safe environment where you can be yourself and talk about anything.

Incredibly convenient and helpful

By T W., Virginia, Verified Reviewer

I used BetterHelp because I had been having issues with mood swings and ruminating for a couple of months over a problem I could not solve by myself and that I did not understand.

I had never tried counseling before, could not get the clarity I needed from my parents, was overwhelmed by the abundance of conflicting information on Google and didn't have enough time for my PCP to recommend a counselor before college starts.

Finally reaching a breaking point where I decided I wanted outside support without the long wait, I registered for BetterHelp. In under two weeks, I was able to do two sessions with a counselor (a 45-minute live text chat one and a 30-minute video chat one) and I almost instantly gained the clarity I had been searching for (learned about gaslighting and manipulation and got on the right track for researching and learning more about how to recognize and avoid it, as well as some recommendations from my counselor herself), and started the process of moving on.

I would definitely recommend it to anyone who could benefit from the help, either short-term or long-term.

Thank you

By Ashley M., Orange Park, FL, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp has helped me in a positive and great way, it had given me a great counselor, and it has a lot of counselors who are there to help you no matter what. I do not regret anything because I had asked for help even though I was scared to ask for help. I would not have dreamt in a million years of actually being here and getting help, I would always think before that I didn't need help but I knew I needed help and once I had gotten the help, it is actually helping me become the better me and take one step at a time to fully be actually happy instead of hiding all of my feelings in.

Fantastic, in the truest sense

By Samantha B., Dallas, TX, Verified Reviewer

Being mentally ill comes with challenges all on its own. Since I discovered BetterHelp.com, it's been a sincere game changer. My therapy is more convenient than it has ever been, and their customer service is the bee's knees! I'm hollering from the mountain tops about how I couldn't have dreamed of a better service!

Great counselor, real professionals.

By Adam B., Jamestown, NY, Verified Reviewer

This company has good professionals that offer genuine counseling. My counselor listens to me and offers specific advice. It is not carbon copy nonsense. Daily response, weekly calls. Worth every penny. Better than $150 a week in-person counseling.

They WON'T help anyone, as they claim.

By Maria B., Ohio, Verified Reviewer

I got rejected by the company and told to seek on person counseling, which I can't afford. The claims that they will help anyone are bull, and it took courage for me to even think about getting help. I was in a bad place and I'm glad that the rejection took 12 hours, because had it been immediate I would have been devastated.

I chose this as a convenient and more affordable solution, and was shot down.

Thanks for nothing and false promises.

Easy, fast, and needed

By Vincent C., Wisconsin, Verified Reviewer

I cannot express how amazing BetterHelp has been in my life. The service is wonderful, and quick to get you settled in and matched with someone to help you with what you are struggling with. I was not able to see anyone in my area for over three months, but I heard great things about BetterHelp, so I signed on. The questions to find you a match are quick and detailed to ensure you feel comfortable with who you are matched with. If you don't "click" with your match, they will find someone who fits better.

The platform makes it easy to communicate with your therapist in a way you are comfortable, offering live chat/offline messaging, voice chat, and live video feed for counseling appointments, which you have an unlimited number. The service is paid for week by week, and while the price is a little high outright, there is financial assistance if you need it.

Also, because it is paid by the week, if you need to talk with your therapist more than once a week, you can set it up with them to have a daily appointment. Though that also depends on your therapist; remember, they are human and you aren't their only client.

Nevertheless, I cannot express the level of help I have received from BetterhHelp. I would gladly recommend this service to anyone in need of help.

Exposing patterns of behavior

By Priscilla B., San Francisco, CA, Verified Reviewer

I am thoroughly pleased with my therapy with BetterHelp. I was searching for over a year for a therapist that my medical insurance would cover. My issues became more intense, but my medical insurance failed to introduce me to someone who was available. I couldn't afford $200+ per hour to pay a person one on one. When I discovered BetterHelp, it was the perfect avenue for me. I am a reflective person by nature, and I deeply enjoy writing to express myself. This method of therapy matched my style very well. I type messages to my therapist when something comes up and we speak on the phone once a week. I highly recommend it for anyone who is experiencing similar frustrations with traditional therapy.

Works with my schedule

Priceless

By Sarah K., New Brunswick, Canada, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp has been a godsend. My extreme anxiety and my location prevented me from seeing a counselor regularly (or at all). BetterHelp allows me to have daily communication with a professional therapist, and sometimes multiple times a day depending on the kind of day I am having. My current therapist is a perfect match for me. I had a previous one that I didn't feel a right connection with, but I was able to switch and get matched the very same day with a new one. If all that wasn't enough, there are also many webinars that are available weekly on a wide variety of topics. This app/website would be beneficial to everyone sometime in the lives. I've recommended them to friends, family and even co-workers.

Good experience with BetterHelp

By Robin K., Homer, AK, Verified Reviewer

I signed up for a free trial at BetterHelp last week. I really liked how often you can contact your therapist, and the text format works well for me. At first, I had a few problems, which I reported on a feedback form. When BetterHelp received my message, they went above and beyond to help me out. They answered all my questions, offered to extend my free trial, and agreed to temporarily stop my subscription since I was going to be moving to Oregon and decided to wait until I had moved to start therapy (I found out that you can only work with a therapist in your own state, and I didn't want to have to get a therapist only to need to switch in a few weeks).

Overall, my experience with BetterHelp, and particularly their customer service, was overwhelmingly positive.

BetterHelp

By Ana T., Estonia, Verified Reviewer

First time I heard about this app was from a YouTuber who struggled with depression and panic attacks. I had the same problem and thought that it would be good to try it out. My first therapist was not that good for me, but then I got to choose a new one myself, and it was the best thing. She is highly professional and very supportive.

You get a response each day and you can write anything, anytime, and schedule sessions. I really recommend BetterHelp because normally you are not able to talk to your therapist that often, in times when you really need to.

Great experience!

By Tasha J., Utah, Verified Reviewer

I got to a point in my life that I needed help, and trying to find traditional counseling was not in my cards. Everything was booked out too far and I needed help now. I got lucky and was placed with an amazing counselor right away. It’s crazy how I went from not believing in therapy to being someone that hunted down whatever I could get my hands on for help.

I would definitely recommend BetterHelp to anyone that needs help. They offer a variety of styles of therapy, and if you do end up with a counselor you don’t like you can change at any point. If the BetterHelp team denies you it’s not because you’re not hurting or don’t need help, it’s because you need more help than they can give. They want you to get the best help possible. Sometimes that means turning you away and saving you money so you can find someone that can help you.

BetterHelp has been a life line

By James J., Nashville, TN, Verified Reviewer

I suffered a major anxiety attack/nervous breakdown in June 2018 and my therapist, who I had not seen in several months, was on vacation at the time. I was desperate for any sort of counseling I could find, and my wife found BetterHelp. I decided to give them a try based on other's reviews, and their help in connecting me to a therapist that I can message or call or video conference, with has been a tremendous help at a point that I would consider one of the darkest moments of my life. I can't recommend them enough if you need help. The therapist they connected me to was very knowledgeable, patient and responsive. This program was money well spent.

Horrible, don’t waste your money!

By Natalie D., San Francisco, CA, Verified Reviewer

100% yes

By Shannon O., Illinois, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp is an amazing option for anyone who is looking to receive counseling without paying an insane amount. I really enjoyed working with my counselor who was super helpful and always made herself readily available. I loved the thought that went into BetterHelp such as being able to choose a therapist based on them being male or female, or that work with nonbinary individuals. I was happy that I could choose what I wanted to discuss and that I could message my counselor whenever I needed to talk. I believe everyone should be able to receive therapy. I would highly recommend BetterHelp.

The BetterHelp app was one of the best apps I could have downloaded. I was paired with Dr. Kutner, which is someone I would likely recommend to anyone that is seeking therapy. She creates a safe space for you to talk to her. I’m so happy I was paired with an amazing person and I’m sure you would too!

Not very professional...

By Kristin S., New Jersey, Verified Reviewer

I signed up for BetterHelp hoping to get in contact with a counselor. They give you a questionnaire with a few basic questions such as age, gender (with nonbinary option included), what type of counseling you're looking for (LGBT+ issues, family issues, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, depression, etc.), and if you have a preference for male or female counselors. After you answer those, you are sent to an open chat with an automated message requesting you type out a more detailed description of what's wrong and based on that description they will match you with "one of their 2,000 professional counselors."

I wrote about six paragraphs detailing my situation, and about an hour later another automated message came up requesting I write more. I added another paragraph, and again, an hour later I got another automated message requesting more info, so I wrote again.

I didn't expect to get a quick response that day because it was the Fourth of July when I applied. But the next day much later I get an automated email stating this:

"Hello Kristin,

Unfortunately, based upon the answers that you provided when signing up, we have determined that online counseling may not be the best resource for you. This decision reflects the ethical recommendations of the major counseling associations.

Online counseling is still a fairly new approach and is not considered the most effective form of care for everyone. In order to ensure that you receive the most appropriate and effective care possible, you may consider scheduling an intake with a licensed counselor who can provide you with in-person counseling in your area. You can find many available counselors by clicking here."

Honestly, this was very upsetting as especially because how unclear it was as to why I wasn't accepted. You approach a company and ask for help, which is their job to help you, and they turn you away without even explaining why. Simply "Our higher-ups decided this isn't for you.

If you have any questions or if you need assistance please contact us at contact@BetterHelp.com."

Personally, I would've wanted an explanation as to why these higher-ups decided to refund me because I REALLY need help. Since they seemed open to questions I did email that contact email asking what brought them to this decision. I received an automated email stating they would get back to me within one business day.

Three business days later I still haven't heard from them. I'm very stressed out and disappointed in this company. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone with actual problems.

BetterHelp helps!

By Emily A., British Columbia, Canada, Verified Reviewer

I am so grateful for BetterHelp. It has been very helpful for my mental health because I have support 24 hours a day. I finally feel like my emotions are validated, which has allowed me to fully process everything that I feel and have been going through. My life is very up and down, so having the option to type everything out to someone who cares about what I'm going through relieves so much of my anxiety.

Best experience

By Kitty K., British Columbia, Canada, Verified Reviewer

I decided to try BetterHelp because they had a 7-day free trial. I wasn't expecting this to be what it was. When I first joined, I was skeptical about using it, since reading people have been billed right away even with the free trial. I didn't get billed, so I was grateful for that. When I joined my one counselor wasn't responding back to me, so I switched to a different one. I'm glad about the counselor I chose, she was so welcoming and caring. After testing the live session, which was weird to me, I realized that this site is worth using. Sadly I couldn't afford $260 (USD) every month. But when I get the chance, I will be paying to use it.

It is worth it, and cheaper than face to face therapy.

Great place for help

By Alexander P., Minnesota, Verified Reviewer

I've had great progress with BetterHelp. They aren't miracle workers or mind readers, but my counselor has helped me get in touch with parts of me I wasn't fully in touch with before.

I'm sure in-person counseling is the best, but having the convenience of sending a quick message when you are thinking or reflecting on something is a huge plus, and totally beats going to an appointment while drawing a blank!
