Summary
BetterHelp is an online counseling platform that will pair you with a professionally licensed counselor. Access to counseling can be scheduled at any time, anywhere, and through any smart device. The efficacy of BetterHelp is linked to provider skill and intervention protocols, but there are some drawbacks if you fall into certain categories of needs and it’s not covered by your insurance provider.

I was living outside my country of origin and needed counseling. I was struggling to find someone in my host country who could offer what I needed and spoke English. BetterHelp offered me the option to support my mental health needs at a fairly affordable rate. I qualified for financial aid given my salary (amazing), but regardless, the sacrifices I made to afford improving my mental health were immeasurably worth it.
Length of Use: 2+ years
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Pros and Cons
The ability to change therapists no questions asked.
The option to choose a therapist that aligned with my religious beliefs (or none at all if that is more your style)
Flexible time schedule and meeting options (text, phone, or video chat)
Available in most countries worldwide
Cost is prohibitive to some. Financial aid helps.

I have enjoyed the ease in use of the overall platform, I appreciated how easy it was to be matched with my therapist. I have been with her for over a year now and I’m so happy I took the leap into this app. I am a healthcare professional who works crazy hours. The ability to book online with multiple options of contacting your therapist by phone, text or video call is the only way I’d be able to participate.
I have recommended and sent many of my colleagues the BetterHelp app.
Length of Use: 1–2 years
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Pros and Cons
Convenience
Match with therapist
Caliber of therapist available
Not covered by insurance
Not covered by FSA/HSA

Overall I would highly recommend BetterHelp. They made it so easy for me to schedule appointments and to skip weeks if I wanted to. They also have financial aid plans which really helped me a lot. I much prefer it to in-person at an office as it saved me so much time driving. They also really help you find a therapist who fits best for your needs and the therapists can give you worksheets.
Length of Use: 1–2 years
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Pros and Cons
My therapist held me accountable for making positive changes in my life
Convenience
Affordability
I believe they still charge you if you skip a week
Sometimes I felt like I wasn’t improving
The reminders are a bit annoying but they help you log on on time

This app is super convenient except for the scheduling which glitches a lot. Either way, the questionnaire to find your therapist was very thorough, and my matching therapist is exactly what I need. Not to mention, it reminds me when to journal my thoughts, which is so helpful for someone who suffers from depression like myself, and reminds me when I need to schedule my next virtual appointment. HUGE TOOL for all mental health woes from life!
Length of Use: Less than 3 months
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Pros and Cons
Finding my therapist
My therapist
Journaling reminder feature
The scheduling feature glitches when it is time to meet so that needs to be fixed
It should ask you the main problems you would like to tackle with your therapist in the questionnaire so the therapist can be fully prepared before you even meet for the first time.
It should have an option to connect to Apple Health so your therapist can see how your things like blood levels and exercise are going if you have an Apple watch

I had the pleasure of working with Dabney Hayes as my therapist, and I couldn't be more grateful for the experience. Their compassionate and attentive approach created a safe space for me to explore my thoughts and feelings without judgment. They offered valuable insights and practical tools that have had a profound impact on my well-being. I truly felt heard and supported throughout our sessions, and I highly recommend Dabney Hayes to anyone seeking a dedicated and skilled therapist.

Pros and Cons
Convenience
Occasional technical problems

Overall, my experience with BetterHelp has been largely positive, but there are a few areas that could be improved.
Number one, the fact that if you relocate to another state, you therefore have to be assigned a different therapist. People very often can form genuine bonds and connections with their therapist, bonds of trust and long-term communication. So when just because you moved to a different state, that means that has to all be thrown away, it’s kind of like losing a close friend.
Number two. There are connectivity issues with the network and for this reason, sometimes it’s necessary to conduct the session via a telephone call as opposed to video chat.
Other than that it is a great platform, particularly for those of us who live in isolated communities where it’s not practical for us to find a therapist locally. So in that respect, BetterHelp has been a fantastic boon to my life on every level and I highly recommend it.
Length of Use: 1–2 years
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Pros and Cons
User friendly due to remote sessions
Highly qualified therapists
Awareness of LGBTQ+ Issues
State moving limitations
Connectivity issues
Pricing

I have been referred by a friend to this platform, they are really good. Not only do they offer you a variety of online presentations and guests talking about several issues, but they also set you up one-on-one sessions with a therapist.
They have been good at listening around my needs. You are also free to change your therapist if you have not connected with him/her.
Personally, it is really helping me and making a difference. I have the best therapist I have had, and my journey with him has been really interesting.
Length of Use: Less than 3 months
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Pros and Cons
Flexibility
Community and sharing
One on one focus
Had to change two therapists to find the good one for me.

BetterHelp has been a vital part of my life since I joined, providing an excellent supportive, nonjudgmental space for me to express myself. My therapist is a great listener who makes me feel supported, appreciated and understood. I highly recommend Better Help as your companion for therapy and support for your journey in life.
Length of Use: 2+ years
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Pros and Cons
The connection to a person who cares about me
The easy steps to book an appointment
The journal prompts
The pricing point-sometimes have to get creative with how I’m going to pay for my subscription

Betterhelp is a great option for those who need to get into therapy right now and don't want to wait on insurance and overbooked offices to get back to you. My only complaint is that they do not offer an every 2 weeks option without spending the same amount as the every week option, and the once a month option still costs 2/3rds as much as the every week option.
But if you're looking to meet with your therapist every week for the forseeable future, it's a very good option to have available to you.
Length of Use: 1–2 years
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Pros and Cons
You get matched with a therapist and can start right away
Therapist matching was very accurate, I had the same Therapist the whole time
Messaging your therapist at any time
Most of the subscription options are very expensive for what you're getting
Only the weekly meeting option is worth the money, but as you get more mentally healthy, you may not need to meet that often, so your options for care get worse the healthier you get.
You can't supplement the cost with insurance

I found a wonderful therapist but ultimately left because of their terrible customer service, pricing, and billing policies that make using their platform a huge pain in the behind.
Some details that are not disclosed until after you sign up and start working with your therapist (and getting billed in advance):
• BetterHelp will bill you every four weeks, regardless of how many sessions you are able to schedule during that 4-week period.
• It is then your responsibility every month to reconcile your BetterHelp invoice against the number of sessions you were able to book.
• It is also your responsibility to identify any discrepancies (if, for example, I or my therapist take a vacation and are unable to meet one week) and to then reach out to BetterHelp to explicitly request a “credit” for the sessions(s) that I was erroneously charged for.
• If you do not perform this reconciliation and also manually follow up in email with BetterHelp, you will continue to be overcharged for any sessions you are not able to schedule in a given month.
• While you will be charged in advance for four sessions per month, regardless of how many you are actually able to schedule, BetterHelp will not refund you for any sessions for which you are charged but unable to schedule. Instead, BetterHelp will issue a credit that pushes out the date on which you will then be charged, again, in advance for the next four monthly sessions.
Additionally, if you have any further issues regarding BetterHelp’s billing practices, your only recourse is to communicate via email. There is no telephone number listed anywhere that I could find on BetterHelp’s website, and the phone number that is listed on my invoice from BetterHelp (only available after I have signed up and incurred my first month’s bill) only routes to an offshore contact center. Calling this number connects you to an answering service where I am advised that they can only take a message and that I should expect to hear back in “1 to 2 business days”.
BetterHelp also raised my rates 25% after the first two months. When I reached out to their customer service (again, only through email — they will no speak with any subscribers), I was informed that my initial pricing apparently reflected some "discount" that was never disclosed, so the price increase was just the realignment to their "standard" pricing.
Length of Use: 3–6 months
Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Pros and Cons
Found a great therapist
Horrible customer care
Terrible subscription model that turns you into an accountant every month to reconcile your bills and chase BetterHelp for any erroneous charges
Now more expensive then every other platform available

I don’t know if I would have ever gone to in-person therapy. The idea was so daunting to me and I had no experience with counselors. I felt that BetterHelp is more approachable, and I felt able to at least do a phone call with my therapist. The messaging aspect was also huge. I struggled to articulate myself and always felt confrontational. Writing was an extra layer where I felt like I was personally writing for myself. It was a small step to share with my counselor quickly and for someone to respond and help guide me with often very anxious or depressing thoughts. This helped me break the pattern of “keeping it to myself” and made me more confident in being vulnerable and asking for help. I have been using the service for 4 years in both Ohio and Illinois. Both of my counselors have been amazing. I especially appreciated the matching service, which allowed me to pick a counselor who could do faith-based counseling.
Length of Use: 2+ years
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Pros and Cons
Matching service that asks questions about you and what kind of counselor you want
Texting and journaling features
Discrete nature of telehealth
Cost is better than others for out-of-pocket
Sometimes my therapist wouldn’t see my messages; app glitches
Phone calls used to drop, but it hasn’t done that in years

If you can afford it, BetterHelp is the most convenient therapy option for people who have busy lives and need a therapist who is available remotely, in various forms of communication (audio, video, text), and also having the option to have group therapy.

One of the best things for me about BetterHelp is having therapy from home (or wherever you want to be) as opposed to commuting to the therapist's office. Especially if the session had been emotionally draining — having to get home afterwards as opposed to being in the safety of your own space makes a big difference to my wanting to commit regularly to the therapy. The amount of group classes that come free alongside your own personal weekly one-on-one is brilliant too and sharing these classes on Zoom with people from all around the world has given me a useful perspective on how mental health is a challenge for us all. It really has taken the residual sense of stigma about mental health issues away.
My own therapist, the second one I found on the app, has been brilliant, and in ten months, I feel I have made huge progress in my confidence and ability to deal with family relationships.
Length of Use: 6–12 months

Honestly, it’s a bit on the pricey side but hey, can you really put a price tag on being healed and growing closer to God, friends, family, husband, or wife? They even honestly offer financial aid and affordable weekly payments. But aside from that, the app is everything you could ask for; you can pick the features you want in a therapist, you set the appointment and you pick how you meet. There’s a journal feature that also has different topics you can shuffle daily or write your own. And if you feel open and transparent one day you can share it directly to your therapist and they can see the real you that be in them pages. I really like my therapist and I plan on doing everything I can to keep using this app. Being whole and useable by God, a healed mom to my kids, a healthy Grammi to my grandbaby, and a dope wife one day to my husband. Count me in.
Length of Use: Less than 3 months
