Awful customer experience

By James C., Stockholm, Sweden, Verified Reviewer

The product never arrived. I've waited 1.5 months for the Quip Toothbrush to arrive. Customer service has informed me that they can't track the item in countries outside the USA. Their suggestion was to contact my local post office or courier and ask if they have the package (no mention of which company it's shipped with or any tracking details, meaning that it is impossible to locate the package).

No apology or refund issued for this awful service, I am now claiming the purchase cost back on from my credit card issuer as I can't get a refund from Quip. AWFUL customer service, do not purchase.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Not much more than a toothbrush.

By Eric, WI, Verified Reviewer

The Quip Toothbrush is made well, lasts long on a single battery, and gives a decent brushing. That said, it really doesn't do any more than a manual toothbrush. It has surprising power for such a small package, but you can't use the vibration to brush your teeth alone like you can with other brands such as Braun or Sonicare. You still have to brush like you would with any other manual brush, so I don't really see where the advantage is. I discontinued within a few months.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Hi, Eric!

First of all, thanks for giving Quip a try. Unfortunately, your comments touch on a "worrying and damaging" misconception, caused by big brand advertising that an electric toothbrush "does the work for you," or that an electric toothbrush should be used differently than a manual one.

This misconception is the very reason we started Quip! The truth is, all toothbrushes (manual, rotating, vibrating) are capable of the same quality cleaning if it used correctly, and all of them should be used in the same way!

To brush properly, no matter which type, you should be move from tooth to tooth, gently, slowing and wiggling the bristles around the gum area for each tooth, two minutes twice a day. Rotating, and vibrating toothbrushes do not change this habit, or magically remove the need to do this. Instead, it just provides extra help to get the bristles where they need to go (inside the gum, tooth gap). Most of all, it gives a fresher feeling that is more rewarding, and people are likely to brush more often and take more care of their teeth.

So the level of movement or vibration does not determine your oral health, the way you use them does.

We aren't able to observe how you brush, but we would recommend you taking your Sonicare (or Quip) to your next dental visit to show them how you do. They will give you the best advice, making sure you are doing it right. You certainly should not just be moving the brush head to each tooth and leaving it there.

The reason other brands make it seem like you “can just leave it there” is because it is easier and faster for them to sell you the highest models. The big brands are making more money by advertising and misinforming consumers that they don't have to put extra effort into brushing because their brushes are more powerful. It is such a damaging line of advertising, and we are fighting hard against it, but we also used to believe it!

We designed Quip to provide proper brushing tips, tools that guide and enhance brushing and deliver services that are crucial in other aspects like proper upkeep of bristles and visiting the dentist on time. In short, we make a better oral care routine more simple, affordable and enjoyable.

As you will read on ADA and Consumer Reports website, the best brush has nothing to do with the amount of power it has, but personal preference. Whichever brush inspires and guides you to brush the right way is the right one for you. We hope you give Quip another try one day, but if not, we just hope you are brushing the right way with whichever brush you prefer.

We hope this helps!

Unimpressed

By Rebekah Akins, San Luis Obispo, CA, Verified Reviewer

The short answer is, don’t waste your time. My teeth did not feel clean, and I returned it pretty promptly. For reference, I only bought it due to my electric toothbrush jumping off the counter and ceasing function.

Hi Rebekah,

We are so sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your QUip!

We can see that our help team has provided further information on some misconceptions regarding stronger vibrations equaling a better clean.

We choose to keep Quip on "sensitive" mode because the level of "buzz" your brush has is not what effects your oral health, it matters how well you brush. So we found that people (and their gums) often prefer a more gentle, comfortable and quiet brushing sensation. However, it all comes down to personal preference as the best brush for you is one that encourages you to brush two times a day, for a full two minutes using fresh soft bristles.

We hope this helps explain why we chose sensitive vibrations. We sorry to hear you didn't enjoy the Quip sensation and thank you for giving Quip a try!

Do not buy this silly toothbrush

By Cindy Warner, Chandler, AZ, Verified Reviewer

The Quip is attractive, but that's where the positives stop. My husband and I burst into laughter when we turned one on for the first time. This is in no way an electric toothbrush. It is simply a manual toothbrush that makes a light buzzing sound. If you use an electric toothbrush, you will be terribly disappointed with the Quip. We were actually puzzled as to why they would market this to people who use electric toothbrushes.

I sent ours back immediately and was given a refund minus a restocking fee. I'm happily back to my non-sexy but super effective $8 Arm & Hammer Spinbrush.

Don't be fooled by the hype.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Hi Cindy!

As your dentist will tell you, the effectiveness of any toothbrush comes down to how it is used, not the features it has.

Quip uses the same nylon bristles, motor, and even manufacturer as other popular leading brands in the industry, so there will be no difference in the way your Quip itself brushes teeth. The core thing that affects your oral health is how you use a toothbrush, diet, and genetics.

Unfortunately, there are many dangerous misconceptions in oral care that we are trying to correct, such as the idea that whether a toothbrush is manual, gently vibrating, vigorously vibrating or rotating toothbrush is what effects your oral health. If they are all being used correctly (and have soft bristles), they will all "clean" perfectly. We designed Quip to guide the perfect healthy routine to clean.

With that said, we cannot speak to personal preference and the best brush for you is one that encourages you to brush 2 times a day, for a full 2 minutes and it sounds like that is your old brush.

We thank you for giving Quip a try, and keep up the good brushing!

Hope you don't have problems...

By BJ, Tulsa, OK, Verified Reviewer

I ordered the Quip and refill plan in mid-December. By February the battery was dead. It is supposed to last until the refill comes in three months. I was not brushing more than two times a day.

So I called the helpline and was told I must have gotten a defective battery and to just buy a new one and put it in. Raven sent a YouTube link on how to do this. I replied I was disappointed that they would not replace a defective battery for me. So she said she would send one.

A full month later, I had not received it and contacted Raven again. She said she would send another one. The very next day there was a UPS note on my door saying the envelope could not be delivered until I pay $3.00.

The toothbrush is pretty. It functions ok. But if you have any customer service needs, don't expect much.

Some practical advice about the Quip: If you have any hand dexterity problems such as arthritis, carpal tunnel, etc., you will miss the cushy ergonomic handles of the grocery store toothbrushes. Also, the "on" button takes a bit of effort to push.

Hi BJ,

We are sorry to hear that your Energizer battery had run out before your 3-month refill. Unfortunately, we are unable to control the extremely rare occasions, products like AAA batteries that are from suppliers such as Energizer, fail their normal usage.

Quip runs on a standard AAA battery, so luckily if your battery ever runs out before a refill, you can swap it out with any AAA battery at that time, if not, you can temporarily use your brush as a manual brush. (Which would perform just fine as a brush, while waiting to switch out your battery). Our team sends steps on how to do this to help with getting your Quip up and running again as quickly as possible, rather than needing to wait for another battery to be shipped.

We can see that Raven had helped you by applying a $5.00 credit to your account, to make up for any hassle caused by the extra postage that was due. We are still looking into what may have caused that issue.

We apologize if any of the above was unclear and our team is always happy to help with any issues or questions you may have.

Fail to honor their guarantee

By Matthew H., United Kingdom, Verified Reviewer

I've used the the Quip toothbrush for over a year on their subscription service. A few weeks back it stopped working - a crack had opened up in the device.

They make a big thing of their lifetime guarantee but when I sent them pictures of the damage I had a really rude reply back saying it was my fault as the toothbrush has been tested and never breaks.

So they refused to replace it. Really shoddy service form a rubbish company.

We are sorry to hear you had some trouble with your Quip! Our warranty covers your Quip for the life of your active refill plan for any manufacturing defects. As our team has mentioned, our handles are heavily tested and the only way we have been able to replicate the damage you had experienced is by removing the brush head incorrectly. We are always happy to help with providing a replacement due to a manufacturing issue as per our warranty policy.

If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to email our help team at help@getquip.com

Sucks in every dimension

By David W., Warminster, PA, Verified Reviewer

I purchased this in June, and it died in July. It took support 36 hours to get back to me about the product. It turns out I had to re-seat the battery. It died again in August, re-seating the batter didn't work. Unfortunately, I purchased a full year subscription. So I don't know how much money I lost. Save yourself the trouble and don't bother. It's a piece of crap and support is marginal at best.

Quip delivery

By Candice, Seattle, WA, Verified Reviewer

I can't tell you about the product because I haven't been able to receive it.

They use USPS mail and if the tracking number says it has been delivered (which it hasn't), they tell you to call the Post Office. The Post Office has an 800 number which they don't answer. When you enter the tracking number it says that it's delivered.

The customer service representative at Quip would only say, "go talk to your neighbors, maybe they have it." They will not give me a refund until I file a claim with the Post Office. The Post Office won't accept a claim until your package has been lost for 15-20 days.

Bottom line, they need to step up and use an actual delivery service.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Company Response from Quip NYC Inc.

Apr 1, 2017

Hi, Candice.

We are so sorry to hear about your poor experience with USPS, and I would encourage you to leave this review on their review page also!

The fact is, they recorded this package as "delivered." Sadly, a number of fraudulent claims online companies get that packages are not delivered when they are. Therefore, we are not able to send out a reshipment (or full refund) until we see a case started with USPS. We do this because that is something you can do instantly. The backup option is not to open a case and, as you say, wait 15-20 days for USPS to admit it as lost, but we do not encourage that.

The reason we suggest checking with neighbors is that we have been shipping Quip for two years now, and nine times out of ten a "delivered" package that cannot be found is in fact, at a neighbors house.

We understand the frustration experienced here, and we are deeply sorry you had to go through that. We have tried many service providers over the last few years and can assure you that USPS perform just as well (or in your case, just as bad!) as the others we tried. But we appreciate your feedback.

Dentist told me my dental health deteriorated

By Dray, California, Verified Reviewer

I got a Quip Toothbrush one year ago and have since been to the dentist three times. I already had great oral health, but I wanted a convenient toothbrush that I didn't have to remember to buy. Quip seemed like a simple Netflix-style solution to my first world problems.

I went to the dentist two weeks ago and have a cavity for the first time in ten years. I also have worse gum health than I did. My dentist (who knows me well) asked me what changed. I explained that I switched toothbrushes to Quip. She told me to go back to Sonicare immediately.

Now that I've really "A and B" tested them, I can actually feel my teeth and gums feel better after I use the Sonicare.

I'm not sure how the marketing got me, but the $40 I saved on the toothbrush (as compared to Sonicare I had), is not worth the $320 filling I had to get and my poorer dental health.

Don't buy it.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Company Response from Quip NYC Inc.

Apr 1, 2017

Hi Dray!

We do not know every detail of your oral health; only your dentist knows that, so we would always recommend you go with their advice first and foremost.

With that said, we hope that they were open with the fact that a toothbrush cannot cause cavities or, in itself, deteriorate your oral health. If they did not discuss this, we would recommend reading through the ADA toothbrush guide and the consumer reports toothbrush guide.

In short, a manual toothbrush (which Quip is identical in shape and size and design to, just with the addition of vibrations and timer making it electric) is capable of a perfect clean if used correctly, just like even the most expensive electrics on the market.

So switching from an "ultra" level of vibration like yours, to a "sensitive" one like Quip will not cause a deterioration in your oral health (despite what the ads say, toothbrushes are not magic devices).

With that said, switching toothbrushes of any kind CAN alter brushing habits and brushing routine. We actually designed Quip specifically to make better brushing and a better brushing routine more simple, and focus on the things that really do improve your oral health (technique, routine, upkeep) and try and ensure people not to believe electric toothbrushes do all the work for you.

But it seems like, for whatever reason, Quip made you brush worse. And we are so sorry to hear it! All mouths are different and so are personal preference. As your dentist should tell you, personal preference is the most important thing when choosing a brush, so it sounds like your old brush is the one for you!

We hope you get back to a better brushing routine and are sorry Quip was not for you!

Does not hold up

By William V., Virginia, Verified Reviewer

I have had this for nine months and the brush power unit does not hold up, nor does the sticky brush holder for the mirror.

The heads DO NOT stay in the power unit anymore and slip out while I am brushing my teeth, which REALLY sucks. I put in new heads and cleaned the power unit connection area, and it still comes out. It's junk.

The bristles are way too soft, no options for a hard, med or soft brush. That's bad too. One size does NOT fit all. The holder that sticks (or sucks) to the mirror no longer holds the brush DESPITE cleaning it off.

In the end, the quality is not there, so I quit the service. There are other options out there now.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Company Response from Quip NYC Inc.

Jul 19, 2017

Hi William! We can see you emailed help@getquip.com with these issues only a few days ago. It's likely that at the same time you wrote this review, which we have answered. As we said there, we wish you had emailed us when you started experiencing even a single issue or if you just had a question or confusion about how a Quip worked. We are here 24/7 to help. Your Quip is covered for the life with your plan!

We can assure the heads certainly stay on extremely firm, so it sounds like something might have happened during one of your three refills that damaged the connection to cause an issue. Something we can always help with or look into, and fix through our help team!

We only use soft bristles because dentists only recommend soft bristles. We would never supply medium or hard because they can be damaging to gums, and are actually worse at cleaning. Some are too thick to get into the gaps, and most dentists wish they were no longer available by any brand. This is not about one size fits all, this is about us being dedicated to only supply products that are good for oral health.(In fact, we will soon be launching an ultra soft head!)

The holder can't lose stickiness (suction, which is the right way to say it) and we recommend checking out getquip.com/cover to see what might cause this and various methods to clean your holder and mirror. Or just chat with our help team.

We can assure the quality of Quip is as at the top of the industry. Quip is actually manufactured in the same facilities with the same parts, processes, and testing as some of the most premium big brand brushes on the market. We only hope that you talk to our help team if you ever have even a single question, so we can ensure you have the right experience.

We are sorry for your frustrations.

Bad design brush head

By David H, California, Verified Reviewer

Very good handle, poorly designed brush head. The bristles are surrounded by rubber "bristles" that seem make it difficult to rinse and clean the brush head. Toothpaste accumulates as well as food particles. I canceled my subscription. Customer service has been prompt in reply but would not stand behind product and refund. Dissatisfied and would not recommend.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Company Response from Quip NYC Inc.

Aug 18, 2017

Hi David!

First, we can assure you that we stand behind our product more than any other oral care brand. Which is why we are the only ones to offer lifetime coverage if you are on a plan (one year without the plan). We also offer 30 days to try Quip, that is 1/3 of the total lifecycle of a brush head, so that is plenty of time to see if food or paste gets trapped. Please return it for a refund if not you are happy.

As we mentioned in our customer service exchange, Quips bristles, both the exterior ones and the nylon interior are the same materials. The design, density, layout are from the same manufacturer as the big brands. Quip in itself cannot trap toothpaste or food anymore or less than most other brushes on the market. We always recommend a thorough rinse after each use like with any brush. As discussed, it sounds like Quip simply wasn't suited to you or your particular routine, we are so sorry to hear that.
