Amazing online therapy

By Mollie F., Winchester, ID, Verified Reviewer

I live in an extremely rural area with little or no help with mental health issues. My daughter suggested I try this online therapy and I sure am thankful that I followed her advice. The schedule is as flexible as possible, you can choose a therapist that meets your needs.

Try it!

By Arthi R., Carrollton, TX, Verified Reviewer

My last therapist was amazing, I made great strides in mental health with her help.

The site makes scheduling sessions easy and sends frequent reminders. It is also easy to change therapists.

Bear in mind not all therapists will influence you similarly, and a huge advantage of the site compared to in-person therapy is you can change therapists as often as you want. This helped me try out different types of therapy to find the one best suited for me.

Length of Use: 6–12 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

No “pros” were specified in this review

Having easy downloading of worksheets would be good. It is clunky to either have to log in every time I want to use one, or to have to copy paste in a word document.

Best place to work

By Angela N., Glasgow, Scotland, Verified Reviewer

I have been working as a therapist on the BetterHelp platform since January. I love it. I hope to be with BetterHelp until I retire.

I can work anywhere I want in the world with BetterHelp as long as I have WiFi. Whenever I have a question or concern, I email them and they always reply within 24 hours.

I feel supported. It's just a great place to work, I love it.

I work full time on the platform and normally work around 27–30 hours per week over 5 days, but if I wanted to change that? It wouldn't be a problem at all.

When I work 120 hours a month I get £650 stipend bonus on top of my wages. I just love being here.

Length of Use: 6–12 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

They supply a constant stream of clients

They are very easy to approach and they listen to what I have to say

Change is inevitable, growth is optional.

By Ribkah K., Everett, WA, Verified Reviewer

I like how I get to choose preferences on the therapist that I wanted. As far as religion, gender, etc., I get the option to choose. The questionnaires that I filled out were helpful and I was matched within 24 hours. It was easy and fast. My first therapy session with my therapist was very insightful and helped me see myself in a different light. So I am looking forward to more sessions in the future so that I can be a better version of myself.

I have had a great experience working with my therapist, Megan. I'm often learning new perspectives, new tools to use in tough situations, and changing the way I think about things to serve my mental health better.

But, that's not just it. BetterHelp offers group webinars. There are tons of different, helpful topics each week. I regularly attend these and I've had a great experience and learned a lot from each one.

Accessible, convenient, & attentive

By Felicity H., Alhambra, CA, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp has been such an incredible surprise. I am someone who really values in-person therapy, and doesn't put a lot of stock on phone/video calls. Since joining this service, and being paired with my therapist, I've already begun to see progress. And despite being virtual, my therapist is in touch with me every day, she gives me HW that helps me reach my goals, and the app itself is extremely user-friendly. I love this service and am excited to see how much progress I continue to make while using it.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

User-friendly/easy to use.

My therapist is consistent and stays in touch with me throughout the week.

I enjoy the ability to journal in-app and my therapist is able to see it.

It's great to actually visually track my progress in-app.

There are some glitches with the journal not clearing from the chat bar sometimes.

I think there are a few too many reminders about session time day-of — it feels a little over done.

You won't regret it

By Mathew E., Kansas City, KS, Verified Reviewer

As many mistakes as I've made in my life, I can humbly say I don't live with much regret. However, if there is one thing I am sure of, I would never have regretted joining BetterHelp sooner. I can't express the difference 1 month has made for me. Once I finally committed to the "daunting" price tag, I quickly realized I was about to be taken care of, and that the amount I just paid was nominal.

Within 24 hours of completing my profile, I was asked to approve a therapist that had the qualifications I could never seem to find on my own. I scheduled a video session with her a few days later, and we chatted a bit before that first session began. Again, it's hard to express how all the stress and anxiety I had about even just meeting my therapist melted away as she let me ramble at her, not to mention all the stress and anxiety I had everywhere else. She was simply there for it, and since, we've found a lot more clarity in my life — in ONE month.

I could go on and on, but simply, she is present with me and takes me in my own time. Again, one of my only regrets, is not doing this sooner. The price is nothing compared to what you will make when you're standing confidently on your own two feet.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

BetterHelp will take care of you once you join

It's quite literally at your own pace, super fast or slow

Amazing!

By Tres N., Dallas, TX, Verified Reviewer

My initial experience with BetterHelp was a little rocky. I believed in the business model of therapy through an app using text and a weekly call with a therapist, but my first therapist and I did not click at all. So I gave up for a week. Then I realized I had the option to try a new therapist. I found my current therapist and she has helped change my life. I have gone through some very hard times and I would not have made it through without her. BetterHelp is the future of therapy.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

May take time to find the right therapist, but once you do it’s great

By Laney K., Flagstaff, AZ, Verified Reviewer

At first, I was very iffy about BetterHelp. My first two providers didn’t seem to have much experience and I didn’t find our sessions to be very helpful. I actually ended up quitting therapy because of this. However, after finding my third therapist on here, I have nothing but good things to say. After only 3 sessions, my therapist has helped me so so much and makes me so glad that I gave BetterHelp one more chance.

What I love about BetterHelp is that it’s similar to online dating. Once you’re matched with a therapist, you can book a video call or phone call session and if you don’t feel confident that they are the right therapist for you, you have the option to switch to another therapist immediately. You have the opportunity to keep cycling through providers until you find the one that’s right for you.

BetterHelp offers a 24-hour messaging option where you can message your therapist at any time. I love the video calls because I still get to see and talk to my therapist, but I get to do so in the comfort of my own home. BetterHelp also offers a variety of worksheets for your provider to send you based on what you are struggling with. These worksheets have helped me more than I ever imagined they offer very helpful, professional information.

Lastly, I love that BetterHelp lets you choose your preferences. For example, you can choose that you prefer an LGBTQ+ therapist, a therapist of color, a woman therapist, a therapist over the age of 40, a religious therapist, etc. I definitely recommend giving BetterHelp a shot if you’re looking for therapy.

Length of Use: 6–12 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

The worksheets

24-hour messaging option

Ability to cycle through providers

The time and effort it takes to find a therapist that’s right for you

The cost (unfortunately I may have to quit therapy due to the cost)

The inability to edit your age and other information when switching therapists

I actually recommended it to friends and family because it has really helped me and I’m sure it can help you too!

Waste of time and money

By Christine M., Philadelphia, PA, Verified Reviewer

I chose a therapist, Paulette Chobot, and scheduled an appointment. I was looking to finally deal with survivor's guilt/PTSD as I have lost my entire family. I spent 45 minutes sharing my painful past. Once done the therapist said pick a card (really is this magic?). I selected a card, she says this tells me you are creative. What the heck? Ok, I don't want to pass judgment on that nonsense, so I let it go. I asked for a weekly standing appt. She said I am on vacation next week but can meet the following week. The night before my appt she messaged me saying, "I am taking a full-time job and no longer counseling. I won't charge you for tomorrow's cancellation." Really, you are canceling? I wasted $360 on my initial appointment and 45 minutes of a painful first appointment when the therapist knew she was taking a full-time job. I am waiting on BetterHelp to do the right thing and refund my waste of time appointment fee. I will update this review as to their response.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Cost of appoint was $360.00

They send daily motivational emails, you get a weekly live session in the form of your choice, and an amazing variety of group therapy options! And it’s affordable. This service has been amazing for me. To have someone so removed from my environment at first felt foreign but after a short time, I discovered this was brilliant. 100% recommend

By Krista C., Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Verified Reviewer

As a single mother, this platform gave me the opportunity to schedule sessions with a therapist at my convenience. Not only could I be at home with my children but I could reach out whenever I needed. It gave me a space to address things in the present moment instead of “trying to remember” all I wanted to address in a face-to-face session once a week. Life-changing and I would encourage everyone to experience this.

My experience has been great so far!

By Sara D., New Braunfels, TX, Verified Reviewer

I was worried about trying BetterHelp at first; however, I'm so happy I did. My therapist has been exactly what I've been looking for in a therapist. I'm not sure if BetterHelp would be recommendable to someone who needs some serious help. But if you're like me who is medicine compliant and just needs some help to work through some things then I recommend it for you.

Length of Use: Less than 3 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Being able to message your therapist at any time

Weekly live sessions

My therapist checks in with me when she hasn't heard from me in a few days

Responses take a few hours so if you need immediate help, it could be frustrating

I wish you could schedule more than one live session at a time
