Hit and miss

By Carter C., Brunswick, GA, Verified Reviewer

The buying process was smooth and easy, there was no pressure which made the experience delightful vs. dealerships. Paperwork was a flurry, not hard, and was rather fast considering it was all electronic and FedEx packages. We were delighted to receive our vehicle 7 days after the paperwork was completed, instead of waiting the entire 10-14 days. There tends to be a hard time getting someone to call back, but you just have to be persistent - I give them a bit of latitude for this due to being a nationwide dealer and I assume they take a ton of calls. Regardless, at that point, we probably would have rated this "5 stars" easily and would have recommended using VROOM to our friends and family.

However, once we received the vehicle, we noticed a large, approx. 12" gouge on the bottom driver's side of the rear bumper cover. It almost appeared to be a body line until we really looked at it. When we reported the find to inquire about a reasonable remedy, we were informed that the damage was visible in a picture so basically "sorry for you". We had screenshots of all the listing pictures, which there were no imperfection pictures listed. In fact, in the vehicle description, under imperfections, it only stated normal wear and tear. We recall our sales representative explaining that the vehicles are all run through the shop to make sure everything worked and that all cosmetic damage over 6 inches was repaired before sale. This gouge is clearly larger than 6", nor was it listed as an imperfection - and the picture it was visible in was not an "imperfection" picture, and literally could be overlooked as a body line or light glare. We were stunned that something as simple as offering to assist with the repair was worth ruining the entire experience, especially since the damage should have been fixed prior to sale (as our rep had informed us) and that the picture was not an imperfection picture. We would have been satisfied with an apology for the deceptive picture and lack of reporting the imperfection, if not at least an offer to help a little with the repair bill. That one minor miscue on the part of the customer service person took the experience from a sure-fire "5 stars" to a "3 stars" and from full-on recommendations to "be careful". I’m still flabbergasted that a company that relies on word of mouth recommendations (being that all transactions are done sight unseen) would compromise the information they put out (we fix anything larger than 6") instead of at least attempting to come to a satisfactory solution between both parties.

In all, reward is always commensurate with risk. Other than the glaring 12" gouge that was hidden by glare in a far away pic and not pointed out as an imperfection, the vehicle was otherwise in really good shape. So if you are considering Vroom, be sure to zoom in on anything that may look like damage and keep in mind there may be imperfections that aren’t pointed out with imperfection pictures - and Vroom will use the regular pics as evidence that those damages were "shown". Also, if you decide to buy, they have great communication up until the phone agreement/deal/$500 down is complete. After that, it’s emails on their time and hard to get a person on the phone. You’ve got to learn patience. Delivery was faster than promised - that was a plus! The vehicle was brought via a 3rd party "Hotshot Trucking" carrier. The driver was prompt, nice, and gave us plenty of time to look over the car. I will say, look over the car and report ANYTHING damage-wise that you weren’t aware of on the Bill of Lading and call Vroom before signing for the car - maybe they’d be more likely to agree to remedy issues that way.

If you know what type of car you want, you’re patient, and understand your vehicle may have some dings not shown, then you can find a lot more vehicle (better packages, better equipped) for a better price than at a brick and mortar dealership. We’d probably be willing to use Vroom again - we’d just be super diligent when inspecting pictures before purchase and inspecting the vehicle upon delivery.

I gave 3.5-4 stars for customer service and friendliness. Both Andrew & Mac (the 2 gentlemen we spoke with before and during the purchasing process) deserve a 5-star rating; both great! Customer Service post-purchase, maybe 2-2.5 stars - super hard to get a return call or willingness to discuss issues with vehicle/pictures.

I give 3 stars for quality of work, because the vehicle is beautiful and drives great - but that 12" gouge either shows poor quality control in the reconditioning department or a deceitful photographer for not adding an imperfection photo.

Price is 5 stars. Better equipped vehicle with similar mileage for about the same out the door price (better in some cases) as the dealerships we looked at.

Vroom for both sale and purchase

By Jerome W., Wellington, FL, Verified Reviewer

First time I tried something like this for a vehicle (both selling and buying online). Worked ok...some bugs need to be worked out of their system. I would still have given them a 5-star review except for some problems with their subcontractors (pick up and delivery) and then the fact they kept my payoff money almost a full month without applying it to my existing loan which meant I had to pay another full month's payment on a vehicle I turned in. Not happy about that at all!

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Ease

Price

They did not apply my payoff for almost a month, this cost me another month's payment

Delivery guy would not come to residential area so I had to get a ride and go pick up the vehicle somewhere else, I had already verified an 18 wheeler can navigate the street

Pick-up company kept my personal garage door opener after telling me I could come and pick it up 4 times

Dodge Caravan

The experience is OK. I don’t think they really check the cars as well as they should. I found things that were wrong with the vehicle and I’ve been calling customer support but it’s so hard to get through.

Pros and Cons

It was easy

Having to wait on hold for long periods of time for to speak to anyone

Car was missing the jack for the spare tire

One of the second row seats would not still want to go and I have to figure out how to get it fixed myself

Update

By Mike P., Cary, NC, Verified Reviewer

After this post (coincidence?) I did hear back from Vroom and they did agree to pay for the battery and paint job to ensure the car was fixed to be 'as advertised'. Based on that, I'm updating this from 1 star to 3, as the end to end process was still far from perfect.

Nice cars

By Toby M., Temple, TX, Verified Reviewer

Great selection of vehicles online.

Priced well.

For buying online it wasn't as automated as I would have thought...

Sales agent never followed up through the process, I always had to reach out to him for updates.

Customer service center employees were nice but it took several calls to get the information I needed and to get problems resolved.

It’s been over a month and we haven’t received the check. I reached out to Brishae a while back and she responded and said she would let me know, but that was four days ago. Since then, we’ve found more stains, including what looks like spilled nail polish, the key fob battery had to be replaced, and the oil indicator says we need an oil change. These are all little things that I feel like shouldn’t be coming up a month after owning the car and should’ve been taken care of before we received the car. I’m getting a little annoyed at this situation.

Performed as agreed but...

By Steve J., Utah, Verified Reviewer

I’d like to rate Vroom much higher but after receiving little to no communication from Vroom during my process of selling my Audi to them, I guess all I can say is that I’m glad they fulfilled their commitment and paid what they offered. Selling a car to an unknown can be a bit unsettling so it would have helped to hear back from them when I emailed a question or two. I did receive good service when I called despite the fact nothing happened as a result of my life calls. Perhaps this way of buying and selling will be in all our futures, but a little reassurance during what is surely an unknown for almost all buyers and sellers would certainly improve the entire process for everyone. Simple stuff really.

Pros and Cons

Did what they said they would do

Zero communication

Vehicle purchase

By Juan R., Homestead, FL, Verified Reviewer

No issues with picking out a vehicle, they have great selections. The only negative thing I have to say is that it's so hard to get help from customer service. You have to wait at the least 20 to 30 minutes on hold on the phone and hope that you get lucky enough for someone to pick up. Even when you opt-in for a call back no one ever calls you back.

Good price and process but a bad car

By Anshul M., Seattle, WA, Verified Reviewer

The car price and the process of buying were smooth. However, my 2018 VW Atlas has a dead battery and non-working cruise control/front assist within 3 weeks of delivery. I am shocked the car passed the inspection, which is supposed to be thorough.

Guess what? Both these are not covered by the 90-day limited warranty and I am without transportation for this week.

Not what I expected

By Annette M., Steelton, PA, Verified Reviewer

I purchased a vehicle on 9/20 and while the purchase and delivery process went smoothly, I was sold a lemon car! Six days into owning my car and already transmission issues! Can’t trade it for a better vehicle until I get the title, email states 4-week wait, but when I called to inquire, I was told 6–8 week wait, and I am back where I started with a vehicle that is unsafe for use.

It’s a different kid of buying experience

By Dee Y., Delaware, Verified Reviewer

First off, Vroom is a good online dealership with a lot of nice vehicles to choose from. Secondly, they have banks that work with less-than-perfect credit.

So once I was approved for the vehicle I wanted I was excited. I had to submit a lot of paperwork online, proof of residency and income, and I had to get insurance even before the vehicle arrived to show proof that the vehicle was covered (extra expense) covering a vehicle for 2 weeks without having it. The rest of the process when smoothly as far as my trade, I had to get some paperwork notarized for the title. Then when I got the car I was happy and the registration and title paperwork went smoothly also. I took the vehicle through inspection in my state with no problems and I had my permanent plates within 10 days.

Now for the car and the maintenance, I would say it was a 10 BUT the AC was not working when I tried to use it. I called Vroom and they gave me the number to Safe Guard Warranty and I was told to have a diagnostic test run, so I took it to Honda and the Compressor failed. I’m so thankful the Compressor was covered under “Honda warranty,” so I didn’t have to file a claim with Safe Guard. I have always purchased vehicles “certified used” by Honda, so had this car been certified, I wouldn’t have had a failed AC. However, I’m glad it was covered. Overall I love the car, and it’s everything I wanted.

Pros and Cons

Fast title and registration process

Availability of vehicles

Nice salesperson

You don’t really know what you're getting until you get it

They only post the pictures that they want you to see

Not really sure what condition the vehicles are in
