Best thing I've done!

By Lena R., California, Verified Reviewer

I was going through a very hard time being alone after going through some traumatic experiences, and then having to quarantine with all that was getting too much, I needed to talk to someone so I tried BetterHelp, and it was exactly what I needed! The first counselor wasn't right for me, but the second one was perfect. I felt so comfortable with her, I told her more and more with time, she was always super helpful! After every single session, I felt tremendous progress. My life started to get better, I felt encouraged to do more things and improve my life, I'm so grateful to her and BetterHelp. Thank you so much!

Counseling at your fingertips

By Rebecca Q., Farnham, Surrey, England, Verified Reviewer

I find this app has been perfect throughout the pandemic. I started using it in June and was matched with a counselor straight away. We communicated a lot on text but as our conversations continued it was clear that the fit wasn’t quite right so a rematched and I have had regular telephone sessions with her since then. I have always felt calmer, and more centered after our sessions and have been impressed with her approach which empowers me, and gives me practical suggestions of how to approach situations. I have used the journal to write daily affirmations, goals, etc., which my counselor responds to from time to time. I have developed these to be more meaningful following her advice, and I often reread them. I sometimes update on events that have happened or thoughts and feelings I have had; occasionally writing letters to people in my life.

I would like a bit more text interaction during the week between sessions but this does vary from time to time. Although I would really like to continue with the service, which is a good value, I will need to move to one-off sessions soon. I hope I can do this and retain contact with my counselor and my journal records.

Better with BetterHelp

By Michaela A., Romania, Verified Reviewer

I feel lucky that I've found BetterHelp at the right moment while going through a challenging life change. The professionals I was matched with were highly trained, the matching process quick and customized to my unique needs, the community and support management was responsive and helpful, the webinars included in the package tailored to fit various topics. I have invited some of my friends to join the website as well. The payment plan is affordable and the options for therapy and counselors varied. It was overall an experience I will definitely repeat once my budget will allow it again.

So glad I found BetterHelp

By Rena W., Lebanon, TN, Verified Reviewer

The app is great! Easy to use, and they matched me with a perfect counselor for me. We have weekly sessions, plus we can message each other as often as necessary. The price is affordable too! The journal is easy to use and I can share my entries with my counselor if I choose to. Video sessions are so easy, just open the app, click on the session tab, and wait for your counselor to initiate the session, hit the accept button, and begin your session. Best decision I’ve made in a long time.

Cheap, high-quality therapy

By Alexander S., Austin, TX, Verified Reviewer

I was paired with Matt, a specialist in ADHD who not only is highly competent, he deeply cares about the importance of his work. He helped me button up issues severely impacting my ability to do work. I canceled my subscription and went on with my life. Six months later, I realized I needed more help, so I logged back on and was immediately paired with him again. Once again I am receiving the excellent care that I need. I cannot recommend this service higher.

A good resource for quick help

By J M., Washington, DC, Verified Reviewer

I recommend BetterHelp for people who need fairly quick help with an issue. It doesn't take much time to sign up and be matched with a therapist. I've used BetterHelp for 3 years now and have had 3 therapists over the time. The first therapist wasn't a good fit but the 2 after were great. When the first therapist wasn't a fit, it was easy to get matched with another based on my preferences. I like how you can write journal entries and send them directly to your therapist.

My gripes with BetterHelp are the fact that sessions are limited to 30 minutes and depending on how popular your therapist is, it can be impossible to get a session. At one point, I was only having sessions once a month (we were in the middle of a pandemic so that was part of the reason) which was not helpful for me at all. I think BetterHelp needs to up the session times to 50 minutes because a 30-min session even once a week, especially in the beginning of the relationship, is NOT enough time. My other gripe is that you can't choose your own therapist, they choose one for you. I wish there was a way you could get a list of therapists licensed in your area and then can select one yourself.

Overall, I recommend BetterHelp, especially for those living overseas. I lived overseas for a while and it was a great way to get help in a non-English speaking country.

BetterHelp during the age of COVID isolation

By Nafekot T., Atlanta, GA, Verified Reviewer

I've been in counseling through BetterHelp for 10 weeks now and I am so grateful for each session with my counselor, Francesca Smith. I would recommend both her and Betterhelp to anyone battling anything, but especially the universal struggle of loneliness. My counselor has been open-minded, considerate, and invested in learning all of who I am in a way no one else quite can. Her guidance has helped me find peace with my past and shift my focus to the present. And because of how much she clearly cares, I don't feel as alone.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Accessibility of BetterHelp with text messaging, video, and phone call all available

The journal features are great for sharing in depth thoughts or stories that you may not have time to cover in sessions

My counselor is amazing at providing thoughtful feedback to my entries

The ability to change counselors after I didn't feel I connected with my very first counselor, the second time was the charm

Great deal, also having 1st trial week free was nice

Lots of transparent reviews and credentials/experience available to review

Sometimes video calls froze and we switched to phone but it comes with the nature of virtual anything

Forget BetterHelp

By CS Q., Los Angeles, CA, Verified Reviewer

My therapist, Dr. Dallas C, was clinically inexperienced and desperate for clients. Admits that she gets overloaded with messages and it’s hard to keep up. Rather than limiting the amount of new clients she accepts, she would rather make clients wait for days on end and will just give you a quick, informal response to your question or problem. She copy/pastes generic responses which shows that she could care less about who you are or what you’re going through. She forgets details about who you are and will end up doing things like pronouncing your name wrong (for example). She doesn’t remember much about you since she chooses to have so many clients at once to feed her ego. This is not real therapy! If you are keen on getting real help, do not use BetterHelp. You get what you pay for. I’ve been in real therapy before, and yes, it can be expensive, but it’s well worth the hefty price tag for the amount of personalized, undivided attention you will get. Investing in a quality therapist in REAL life is an investment in yourself. Also, telehealth therapy is nothing like being in a real room with the therapist. If you want to really do therapy, do it the right way. Pay up, show up, and forget BetterHelp.

Not bad

By Sam M., Florida, Verified Reviewer

This app is fairly cheap for the services provided; if you’re an American you’re aware of how expensive sessions can cost in person.

My biggest issue with this, however, is that groupinars are a serious hit or miss.

Sometimes you’ll schedule with someone really great at communicating, shows a clear presentation, and is inclusive.

Other times the counselors may teach exclusively heteronormative situations/services or offer bias information, like Fox News statistics? Sometimes they’ll make you watch TEDx Talks and YouTube videos, that you can watch online for free.

Occasionally in groupinar chats, people will take their anger out on you and the presenter/counselor will not pay attention to it, forcing you to leave the chat because you’re so uncomfortable.

If you’re gay/lesbian/atheist it can be disheartening at first establishing a relationship with a counselor because there’s so many that do like to push their personal views and opinions on your situations.

Took me 3 switches until I found a good one.

Would I recommend this to anyone? Yes.

Would I caution LGBTQl+ about the dilemmas I endured through this process? Very much so.

Very skeptical

By Coby D., Oklahoma , Verified Reviewer

I was always against counseling and didn’t believe in it, but over the last several years my family had lost alot. And I kept it all bottled up until I was about to lose control. My wife sent me a link to BetterHelp and I decided to give it a shot. It didn’t take any time to get me a counselor and they matched me up with a great one the first time and she has really helped me to start my way back from a dark place. Try it out

By A C., Texas, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp is my first experience with counseling for my personal mental health. I would be nervous going into an office seeing a person face-to-face so the fact that it’s an online platform with multiple ways to communicate works better for me. A great start to my healing process

By Rachel S., Tampa, FL, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp is the first form of therapy that I have ever done. Before I sought help with them, I was terrified of therapy, even though I knew it was a very wonderful thing. But I was in a rough spot, and I really couldn't see any way out. I was also hesitant at the time because I was broke and living off my credit card, and thought that my mental health needed to take a back seat, like it always had. But I decided to give it a shot. I was very lucky and was assigned to a wonderful therapist on the first assignment. I told her that I was very nervous at first, and she was totally okay with that. But as I continued working with her, I became more comfortable and I started opening up more and digging deeper within myself. She has opened my eyes to so many ways for my healing journey to go, and I am so grateful for that. I'm still continuing my work with her after 4 months of weekly meetings and messaging throughout the week. BetterHelp was the best start to my healing journey, especially in the midst of the pandemic.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Flexibility of meeting types and catering it to my own schedule

The ability to switch therapists at any point if I felt that I needed to

The cost (for everything that's available, I think it's fairly priced)

While the cost is still fair, it still is sometimes a burden to be charged monthly, wish it could be charged weekly

Affordable, convenient, and effective choice when you really need a therapist!

By Lizzie H., North Vernon, IN, Verified Reviewer

I wasn't sure how I would feel about online therapy - I'd been in therapy for years doing it the traditional way of going in person to an office. Then I moved to an isolated small town where finding a therapist that was a good fit would have been a real challenge, or else I would have had to drive long distances to nearby larger towns. And then the pandemic hit. So, I figured online therapy was worth a whirl!

To my surprise, this has really become my favorite way of doing therapy. No time on the road, no gas money, no waiting in annoying waiting rooms! Not only is it therapy from the comfort of home, but you have access to your therapist all week long via messaging, and my therapist gives me a full hour of a "zoom" type session every week. In "traditional" office-visit therapy, it's usually hard to get in every two weeks, let alone every single week! I'm thrilled that I can rely on having a therapist there as often as I really need her.

The communication format is just as effective as being with a therapist in person. The therapist I'm currently working with is one of the best I've ever had (and that's saying a lot, as I have a lot of experience with this, LOL!). I was able to continue requesting different therapists on BetterHelp until I found the perfect fit for me. It was worth the effort, and I had a huge "pool" to choose from, unlike the very limited options that there would have been in my small town area.

One reason I chose BetterHelp is that I did a quick online cost comparison and saw that it was less expensive than TalkSpace. I'm a teacher, so I'm on a budget. Certainly, I have no regrets with my choice. I'm getting great service for less money than the competitor for a price that is actually within my budget. Couldn't be happier.

Length of Use: 3–6 months

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Pros and Cons

Found the perfect fit for me from out of a huge pool

Convenience - therapy from home

Value - you get so much more support in this format with messaging all week long, plus personal sessions every week

Took a while to find the perfect fit - had to "try out" quite a few therapists (but it was worth it in the end)

Since it's dependent on things like reliable WiFi, there are the occasional inevitable technical glitches, but that's just life in the modern world

Amazing

By Chelsea W., Milford, CT, Verified Reviewer

BetterHelp is the best. I’d rather talk to a counselor on here than any of the ones I’ve seen in person here. It just is better. You can message your counselor through the week if you’re going through something, whereas your usual therapist will say "come in next week and we can talk about what you’re going through." Mental health is so important and I feel like this is an excellent way to help support that.
