They don’t seem to know what they’re doing

By Layla Y., Florida, Verified Reviewer

All the "smiley smiley" and "smile journey" talk gets very old very quickly. I’d rather see quality materials and service than cutesy jargon. Into my second month, I ran into what appeared to be a manufacturing problem with one of the aligners. Rather than replace the aligner, they required me to get another scan or imprints, which held up the whole process. I did as requested and expected to hear something about the "reevaluation," and heard nothing. So, a few weeks later I open the next package of aligners, figuring I’d keep going with my program. Inside the package were two bottom aligners.

First problem: One poorly manufactured aligner.

Second problem: Incorrect packaging. For $1800?!

This is the second major problem I’ve had in a two-month period. I should be halfway through this torture at this point (torn up tongue, for one), and now I’m being told I need to wait at least another four weeks for new aligners to arrive.

Their mistakes put me at minimum two months behind schedule. This is unacceptable. The problem is they get your money up front if you go for the "full payment" deal.

My "smile journey" is a smile wreck right now, and I’m not even halfway there.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

They don’t fit!

By Domonique B., Frisco, TX, Verified Reviewer

Week one and two were ok, however, the following aligners were to lose, honestly dealing with the email correspondents team was horrible - they were short, rude and robotic as far as their reply. I’m supposed to get new aligners, it’s going on 3 weeks, if the new ones don’t fit, I will be dropping them off where I got my scan, and I will be getting a full refund. Not sure why I’m being treated poorly and ignored as far as my last email that I sent out, before something I’m paying for is not working properly. I was so excited at first, now I’m not so sure. Very poor customer service. I honestly feel like my teeth need to be rescanned. I’m 3 and 1/2 weeks in using aligner 2/3 because the other ones couldn’t be removed with my tongue. Now I’m trying to keep track, because everything is out of order now. I honestly don’t know what to do.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Poor service and delivery

By Ashley R., Spring, TX, Verified Reviewer

I would not recommend SmileDirectClub. I received my aligners promptly. The trays did not fully straighten my teeth. I was provided 2 additional months of aligners at no cost. No change in my teeth. I then ordered retainers. Four months later I am still waiting on retainers. Each time I call they explain they are having a delay in service. They cannot provide an ETA for my retainers.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Terribly disappointing experience

By Shachar P., New York, Verified Reviewer

Terribly disappointing experience. Two years in, my teeth are still overcrowded despite THREE extra 3D scans and refinements. Customer service has been ignoring my emails. I would stay away, this product is the definition of you get what you paid for.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Unsatisfied

By Harrison B., California, Verified Reviewer

Would of rather spent the money and went with an actual Invisalign with an orthodontist then this online mess. My month 5 they originally gave me a completely wrong aligner and I didn’t know until a week of that my teeth were hurting and getting VERY crooked again. I reached out to them and they said one would be mailed out within 14 days. It’s been 3 weeks and I reached out again asking for a lead time and the "specialist" said "we will let you know when they’re ready when you get a shipping email." Major inconvenience, least they could do is pay for my retainer that I just spent $100 on. Or not charge me this month, but no.

I have 3 co-workers who referred me to this and one of them is still waiting for his retainers that he placed 2 months ago. The other finished his aligners and his retainer didn’t fit so now waiting for another set.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Update

By Belle C., South Carolina, Verified Reviewer

They said they wanted to reach out to me in regards to this issue in a private message but when I responded, this is the worthless email I got back:

We are truly sorry about this delay and any inconveniences it may have caused you. There's a bit of a delay at our production team but we are looking forward to having all delayed orders shipped as soon as possible. You will be notified once the tracking number becomes available...

Never said a thing about my gum damage. Never said why my dental team will not respond. Just this generic garbage.

I don't need excuses.

I NEED WHAT I PAID FOR.

I TOOK BACK A STAR NOW, THEY ONLY GET 1.

SmileDirect scam

By Michelle T., Verified Reviewer

I just got my aligners, top only. I was never told I was only getting the top and was charged for both top and bottom. Their own FAQs advise against only doing one, but then they send it that way and charge you full price. Anyway, this seems to be happening more often than not; it's how they really make their money, providing less product than promised. They did the same to my sister. We are both returning them for refunds.

They also charged my sister's credit card five times instead of the two for each of ours, she had to find the mistake, contact them, and wait until they did whatever and finally got her money back. This place is really a scam; they over promise and under deliver, as with any other scam. I am looking to perhaps start a class action suit after seeing all the complaints. They need not charge for both top and bottom if they are doing both and they should be required to let you know if they are sending both and give you the option to cancel at that time. We know why they do not do that, it's how they make the money, assuming the majority of people will just use what was sent while the company keeps the money.

They can care less about the complaints online as long as the money piles up, in the meantime, they need to be shut down.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Hi there, Michelle. A SmilePlan demonstrating the scope of treatment determined safe for each customer is provided to the customer before the aligners are sent into production. In addition, the Consent and History documentation that each customer signs indicating that they read it notes that our treatment comes at a flat rate regardless of the scope of treatment. If you'd like to speak on this further, please feel free to reach out directly.

Dishonest in the consultation

By Susan B., New York, NY, Verified Reviewer

I went into a Smile Direct Club consultation with one request: fix the mild overjet (colloquially known as overbite) of my two front teeth to some extent. I know the product is limited in what it can accomplish, but I was told that my overjet could indeed be ameliorated with their product. This was a blatant lie. Not only could Smile Direct Club not do anything to correct my overjet, but they sent me aligners that would actually ENHANCE my overjet in order to correct my teeth's "crowding." My teeth have hardly any crowding, as I previously had braces, so this trade-off was highly undesirable. Smile Direct Club customer support was terrible - slow to reply and I had to repeat myself over and over again. I would often receive a form email in response, and always from a different representative. I am currently trying to get a refund.

Smile Direct Club should be up-front about what their product can do when it comes to overjet, but instead, they lie. The truth is, if you have an overjet you want corrected to some extent, Smile Direct Club may not be able to anything for you at all. In fact, they may attempt to make your overjet WORSE. Don't waste your money. I would have been happy if Smile Direct Club didn't correct my overjet at all, as I would have been fine with having minimal correction and receiving a retainer to at least prevent my teeth from shifting outward further. But Smile Direct Club claimed they had to enhance my overjet. It cannot believe they made me go through all of this, when they could have just been honest with me from the beginning.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Hi there, Susan. I would like to clarify that SmileDirectClub provides every customer with a projection of what can be accomplished within our protocol in the form of a SmilePlan. This plan is created by a dentist or orthodontist licensed in the state of the customer being treated. In addition, the consent and history form that all of our customer's sign before beginning treatment states the extent of our protocol including risk, benefits, and limitations of our aligners. Please reach out directly if you'd like to speak further, as we cannot address any specific customer case publicly due to HIPAA law. We can be reached at grinners@smiledirectclub.com.

Horrible company

By Chris H., Long View, TX, Verified Reviewer

Everything runs late, and managers lie and say they will look into it but never call back. I called to cancel and was told I would have to wait 3-4 days for someone to call me back. Whatever you do, don't give them your credit card info, it's a trap.

Weird, uncomfortable, and outrageous.

By Madison L., Pasadena, CA, Verified Reviewer

1. The location is terrible. I was lucky to have a friend tag along, or I would have been extremely uncomfortable. To park in that creepy garage alone, not have very good directions from the parking garage to the building entrance, and then have some random person let me in an empty building raises sooo many red flags.

2. This feels very similar to a timeshare meeting. I was asked an uncomfortable amount of times which payment plan I would like to do - both before and after the scans. I was very clear from the beginning that I was not sure that this was something I was 100% certain on and I needed more information, hence why I came here.

3. The pricing plan is terrible. I would need all of 2-3 months worth of work, and yet it costs the same as if I needed 18 months? How in the world does that make sense? To pay $2,000 for 2-3 months of work is effing insane.

Terrible experience. The only reason it's not 1 star is because I feel bad for the employees who I can tell was just doing their job per directions from corporate. They were nice, I just really hated the experience of the company.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend
