Nooming marvelous

By Roslyn H., Littlehampton, England, Verified Reviewer

I praise the day that I saw the pop-up from Noom on my mobile. At last, an eating plan that I could buy in to. These last six weeks have been easier than I could ever have imagined. Not only am I keeping to the calories, I am enjoying the psychological support. So far I have lost 13 pounds and I am looking forward to losing another 13 pounds. Long live Noom.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Good results - but program could be better

By Jodi D., Geneva, NY, Verified Reviewer

Good aspects: The app helps you measure calories in and calories expended. So, you log what you eat - portion size and calorie counts (many of which are already provided) and you log your exercise. This is very helpful in staying within a calorie budget.

Also good: Daily weigh-in and a graph of your progress (or lack thereof). These app features are useful. Also useful are the daily "psych-tricks" and tips for avoiding self-sabotage and increasing will-power. Even if the information is little more than what is featured in a women's health magazine, the daily reminders can be helpful in staying on track.

Less good aspects: The human elements. On the one hand, it is valuable to have some human contact. The group coach and the goals coach provide this. But Noom advertises itself as providing a personalized service and this is not quite right. After a month, I have no idea what the goals coach is supposed to be doing. They don't seem to have any information about my own habits or progress (although it seems like the service Noom claims to provide is premised on their knowledge of what is logged). The various daily lessons also have no discernible relation to what is logged. The group coach does little more than ask the group to talk about their cravings - which focuses people on talking about sweets rather than anything else. Nevertheless, the group itself is a good concept and a nice support system.

Overall, I've had results and I like the app. But it could and should be better than it is.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Good program

By Goldie W., Tennessee, Verified Reviewer

Anytime you have to diet it's a bummer! The Noom program is different from most of the other programs I've used. A lot of them want you to go to a center where you are weighed in, your diary is inspected and some Twiggy look-a-like tells you how you'll never reach your goals if you eat a cookie once in a while. Or maybe you weigh in and then sit through a lecture! These don't work with me! I need to be mostly on my own with all the support I need at my fingertips. If I were totally on my own, I'd give up, but I'm not! This program is ideal for me!

Improved, but could still be better

By Beth A., N/A, Verified Reviewer

This is my second try at losing weight with Noom. I previously dropped out before the end of the trial period because an accident left me unable to continue at that point.

This time around I'm on week six and quite impressed with the improvements that have been made in the intervening time. The coaches are real people and there are fewer automated responses. It feels a lot more like there's personal support.

The food logging is easy and using their food color system and portion guide really helps to stay within a calorie budget. They also allow a range of calorie limits depending on how fast you want to lose the weight. That can be changed in the settings to allow for things like holidays. The only thing I'd like to see changed in the food log is the ability to navigate between meals without having to go back to the main menu (this is on iOS...I think Android might have that feature).

The daily articles are fairly well written and provide loads of detailed information about weight loss. The psychology behind it and the truth about long-held misconceptions, plus tips and tricks on what to do in specific situations and for keeping on track, are all helpful. There are suggestions for staying motivated and lots of recipe ideas as well.

The group has been an invaluable support and encouragement. I don't know that I would have lasted this long without them! I definitely feel like I've made some new friends there.

One thing that could make the app better is the ability to search the text of the articles. Specific articles can be bookmarked, but if you want to find a particular section, you have to remember which article included it. For example, I want to find a suggestion for a salad that had pomegranate seeds in it. I have to troll through a lot of articles to find it because I can't do any sort of search.

Overall, I'm really pleased with the program and how it's working for me.

Peer and Coach Support

By Pamela K., Midlothian, TX, Verified Reviewer

I love the daily support and feel I have learned so much about the thought process involved in influencing our food choices and habits. The journaling and recording of food daily have been the ultimate help to me.

Best way to learn for life!

By Michelle C., Indiana, Verified Reviewer

I'm about halfway through my program and I can't tell you how much I have learned. I have known for a long time that my weight problem is 100% psychological and so I need to fix my brain and my habits and my thinking, and that is EXACTLY what this program does. And what I find the greatest and most exciting part about it is I am helped to make small changes, one thing at a time, until each change becomes a part of my normal behavior, and eventually, I will have an entire life of good habits and behaviors! In the past, I have always tried to change every single thing overnight, all at once, and almost immediately fail. None of us can do that. This course has helped and will continue to help me make the changes that I need to so that I can be the healthiest me possible!

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Daily information is GREAT!

By Karen M., Minnesota, Verified Reviewer

The daily informational pieces about the psychology and physiology of weight management are entertaining while still being very informing. The food tracking system is the easiest I've seen, with many different measurements to choose from to help accurately assess what I'm eating. It is very handy to have the Noom app track my steps using the built-in phone step counter, and it is super easy to log additionally exercise as well. I also find the group messaging very helpful.

The only reason I didn't give Noom a full five stars is due to my personal coach and his apparent disinterest in his job. Feels like he is just making the motions to fill his quota of required text messages. Hopefully, other coaches are better.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

It works if you commit to it

By Helle F., Copenhagen, Denmark, Verified Reviewer

My experience with Noom has been good so far. I follow the program most of the time, and it has helped me lose weight.

Great support from the personal coach and it also helps to be a part of a support group.

I find the lessons useful, relevant and informing.

It would be nice, though, if the food database included food available outside the USA also, and it would also be nice if there were people living not so far away from me in the support group.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Beware of billing

By Sierra H., Orlando, FL, Verified Reviewer

This is a story like many others I see. I was signed up for a free trial that was $1. Then the day after the trial ends they charged me for 4 months at a time totaling over $100.

When signing up it advertises it is only around $20-$30 a month. Nowhere did it indicated you would be charged in 4-month intervals.

So once I reached out to support via email because they have no phone number they denied my refund due to their refund policy, probably put in place because they are robbing you for 4 months of subscription at the time.

I’ve filed a complaint to BBB and I’ve begun leaving reviews everywhere I can so that others won’t be charged $100 plus they don’t have or don’t know they are getting charged. I have not heard back from my support representative since I filed the complaint yet.

The app itself isn’t even that great. The coach they give you, which is one of the features that is supposed to make this app different, I’m 80% sure it’s automated. Then they give you food tips and quizzes. You count your calories and weight and there are many other free apps that won’t steal your money you can do that on.

Do not get unless you are willing to throw away money.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Not happy

By Sophie R., Los Angeles, CA, Verified Reviewer

I never completed my application to Noom. I couldn't have. I do not own a smartphone. Unfortunately, they ask for the payment information first and mention the smartphone later.

They also do not provide any explicit unsubscription information in any of the early communications. Rather naively, I assumed that since I did not complete the application process, I was not enrolled and Noom and they won't charge me.

Just to be on the safe side, I also clicked the "unsubscribe" button on one of their newsletters. Apparently, that only applied to the Newsletter.

I was charged $149 through PayPal.

I have looked up "How to unsubscribe from Noom" since, and it's "Catch 22." You need to be fully subscribed to opt out, and if you can't fully subscribe...

I'm 72 and on a pension. $149 is a lot of money.

I could not find an order number. Bellow is the number of the PayPal transaction.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend
